Arthur J. ‘Jack’ Rahn
LEWISTOWN – Arthur J. “Jack” Rahn, 78, long-time Lewistown resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive.
Jack was born on July 6, 1922, at Lewistown to Arthur J. and Elizabeth (Brown) Rahn. He received his schooling in Lewistown and graduated from Fergus County High School in 1940. He attended MSU-Bozeman for two years and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946.
On May 12, 1947, Jack was united in marriage to Marilyn Noble in Billings. In 1958, he constructed the Gasland Service Station and later built Lewistown’s first car wash, which was adjacent to Gasland. He also owned and operated Jack’s Self-Service Station until retiring in 1988. He enjoyed hunting and also enjoyed fishing at Fort Peck Lake.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Lewistown; three daughters, Leslie Pentecost of Seoul, Korea, Christine Rahn of Phoenix, Janice McNair of Bozeman; and one son, Jack A. “Jay” Rahn of Hamburg, Germany. In addition, he is survived by six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be no services at this time per his request. Cremation has taken place. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association at P.O. Box 2411, Great Falls, MT 59403; or to the charity of donor’s choice.
The Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown and Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive are in charge of arrangements.
Gilbert L. Shifley
RYEGATE – Gilbert L. Shifley, 96, of Ryegate, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Wheatland Memorial Nursing Home.
Gilbert was born June 30, 1904, to Abraham L. and Elizabeth (Cowen) Shifley in Macomb County, Ill. Gilbert came to Montana in 1926 settling at Big Coulee, south of Ryegate.
He married
Inga Enervold on June 9, 1942, in Baker, and they enjoyed ranching together and gardening.
Gilbert was a member of the Ryegate Methodist Church and of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, 29 years as secretary. He served as county commissioner for 30 years and taught Sunday school.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Rolly, Howard and Garrett and two sisters: Mable and Elizabeth.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Inga; his two sons, Robert of Ryegate and Richard of Columbus; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the Ryegate Methodist Church with Rev. John Farquahar officiating. Interment will follow in the Ryegate cemetery. Memorials may be made to Shriner Hospitals, c/o Algeria Temple, PO Box 1174, Helena, MT 59624. Perkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Sutherland
WORLAND, Wyo. – Dorothy Clark Sutherland, 74, died on Aug. 15, 2000, at the Washakie Medical Center.
Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with interment to follow at Riverview cemetery. Veile Mortuary of Worland is in charge.
George Alexander
GLASGOW – George Alexander, 81, died Aug. 10, 2000, at Valley View Home of natural causes.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, in Bell Chapel. Interment will be in Highland cemetery. Bell Mortuary is in charge.
James Louis Botch
WIBAUX – James Louis Botch, 74, died on Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wibaux. Vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Wibaux. Rite of Committal with military honors will be in the St. Philip’s cemetery in St. Philip’s, Mont. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is in charge.
Clare Fruit
ALZADA – Clare Fruit, 89, died on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish, S.D., of natural causes.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, to proceed to the Valley View cemetery for graveside services at 10 a.m.
Arnold A. Harmala
RED LODGE – Arnold A. Harmala, 74, died Monday afternoon, Aug. 14, 2000, at Cedar Wood Villa in Red Lodge. Born on Oct. 13, 1925, on the family farm on Willow Creek, he was a son of Jalmar and Lilly (Bell) Harmala. Arnold grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He graduated from Roberts High School in 1943.
With his great interest in music, he played in the Roberts Community Band for many years. He also played in the Nite Owl Orchestra for a time. With Arnold on the mandolin and his brother Emil on the guitar, they played many snappy tunes and polkas at all family gatherings, much to the enjoyment of everyone.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he worked in Billings at Wymont Tractor and for Northern Pacific Transport. On March 13, 1949, he married
Betty Thaut in Billings.
With his love for country life, he returned to Roberts, working for various farmers and ranchers. He also worked in the Melville and Roundup areas. After working in the Columbus area for Bill and Leona Maki for several years, Arnold retired to Columbus, and with his lawn service kept many area lawns neatly groomed. He also enjoyed refinishing furniture and through the years had remodeled several homes. He found contentment in his pet birds and small animals. An avid reader of western novels, he had a large collection of Louis L’Amour books.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Logan of Federal Way, Wash.; one sister, Mildred Swanson of Roundup; one sister-in-law, Grace (Elmer) Jarvi of Billings; two nieces, Diane (Gary) Wacker and Marcia (George) McCleary of Roundup; five nephews, Gary (Julie) Harmala, Martin (Lorene) Harmala, Mark Harmala and David (Denise) Harmala, all of Billings, and Walter (Ranee) Harmala of Benton City, Wash.; numerous grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter and Emil Harmala.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, in the Roberts United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Roberts cemetery with the Olcott Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
Willis E. Horning
LAUREL – Willis E. Horning, 91, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his home.
Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Charles ‘Bill’ Jardine
MILES CITY – Charles “Bill” Jardine, age 77, of Miles City, passed away on Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Holy Rosary Health Care.
Bill was born on March 12, 1923, at Helena, the son of Charles Roy and Bertha Irene (Shafer) Jardine. He attended grade schools in Great Falls and Missoula and graduated from high school in Missoula. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Following his military service, he returned to Missoula where he went to the University of Montana, Carroll College, Harvard and Columbia.
On Nov. 16, 1951, Bill and Barbara Mitchell were united in marriage in Missoula. They moved to Broadus, and Bill started practicing law and served as county attorney for six years. Following, they moved to Columbus and in 1960 settled in Miles City, where he practiced law until 1997.
Bill was a member of the Town & Country Club and R.S.V.P., president of the University of Montana Alumni Association and served as attorney for Tongue River Electric Cooperative for over 30 years. He had a great admiration for his animals, but most of all he loved his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons: Craig Jardine and wife, Vickie of Billings, and Jerry Jardine and wife, Yara of Boise, Idaho; two daughters: Terri Schmidt and husband, Raymond Jr., of Miles City and Cindy Dickson and husband, Ron of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; a sister, Mary Louise Hall and husband, David of Butte; and 12 grandchildren: Raymond, Muffy and Brianne Schmidt, Lisa Jardine Clavell and husband, Miguel, Casey, Julia and Michelle Jardine, Karen, Laura and Ellen Dickson and Derik and Joshua Jardine. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Barbara.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Grace Bible Church with Pastor Jerry Coon officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Kierstin Jillyne Kinney
Keirstin Jillyne Kinney, 27, went to the arms of Jesus on Monday, Aug. 14, 2000. Kierstin passed away suddenly from complications of diabetes in Missoula where she was living and working.
She was born Oct. 8, 1972, in Great Falls. The family moved to Nebraska in 1976 and returned to Billings in 1979. Kierstin graduated from Skyview High School in 1990 and attended Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyo., and MSU-Bozeman as a French major. One of the highlights of her college years was her trip to Paris, France, with the French Club in Powell.
Kierstin was so talented and many who knew her appreciated her gourmet cooking and were blessed by her wonderful solos and duets she sang with her mother. As she was growing up, she participated in gymnastics, and she had a real love of skiing. She enjoyed going to Clydehurst Christian Camp and helping with Children’s Church and Children’s Choir. Kierstin had a real heart for children and loved all animals, especially her cats. Everyone who knew Kierstin was inspired by Kierstin’s resilience and determination to live life to the fullest despite the restrictions of her diabetes which was diagnosed at age six.
Kierstin is survived by her parents, Dr. Tedd and Marilyn Kinney; her brother and his wife, Drs. Todd Aaron and Amy Kinney of Bozeman; grandmothers, Lenore Hegstrom of Sioux City, Iowa, and Janice Kinney of Lincoln, Neb.; along with her aunts, uncles, and cousins who were all very special to her. Her friends and family will never forget how she blessed our lives. Kierstin, we love you!

Mary G. Laya
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – Mary G. (Kumor) Laya, 91, formerly of Sheridan, Wyo., died on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Fairview Baptist Home.
Visitation was held at Hallowell & James Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 14. Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Holy Name Church. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.
Elizabeth ‘Bette’ Lease
Elizabeth “Bette” Lease died Sunday morning, Aug. 13, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings. She was 84.
Bette was born on May 7, 1916, in Laurel, a daughter of Conrad and Eva (Fendal) Fox. Living in Yellowstone County all her life, she was raised south of Billings and received her education at Elysian and Lincoln schools. She later attended the Townsend Beauty College in Billings and continued on to work as a beautician for 11 years. Betty worked for 14 years at Midland Packing Co. and then spent 19 years at First Bank Billings before retiring in 1984.
Bette loved to cook and bake. The time spent with her grandchildren was cherished. She was a great dancer, loved bowling and was an avid reader and a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Lease of Billings; grandchildren, Nichol Lynn Lease and Joshua Michael Lease and their mother, Tonia Lease Crawford; her brother, Emanuel (Clara) Fox and sister, Marie Frickle; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was also a great-great-great aunt. Bette was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry Fox, Jake Fox, John Fox, and Alex Fox; and two sisters, Lydia Ginter and Katie Eckhardt.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Smith Downtown Chapel. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Pilgrim Congregational Tape Ministry. 409 So. 36th Billings, MT.
Yvonne Martin
AURORO, Colo. – Yvonne Martin, age 50, of Aurora, died Aug. 5, 2000, in her home. She had been in poor health for several years. She was born Feb. 20, 1950, to Harold and Aloha (Brasseur) Kransky in Miles City, Mont. She grew up there and graduated from Custer County High School in 1968.
In 1970, she married
Frank Stevens of Roundup. They lived there briefly, then moved to Colorado, where Yvonne worked for a magazine distributor. They were later divorced. In 1990, she married
Ken Martin in Central City. They ran their own shop there, living high in the beautiful Rockies and raising their son. That union ended in divorce. Friends and family remember Yvonne’s sweet and giving nature as a young woman and her desire to be a good mother
Yvonne is survived by her son, Toby Martin, of Aurora; her father, Harold of Miles City; one sister, Suzanne Kransky of Longmont; three brothers, Jeff and Steve Kransky of Miles City and Mike Kransky of Billings; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Her mother Aloha Eaton preceded her in death.
Cremation took place in Aurora. A memorial service was held in Miles City on August 13.
Wilma F. Parker
Wilma F. Parker, 84, of Billings and formerly of Austin, Texas, passed away Aug. 13, 2000, at her daughter’s home in Billings after a long illness.
Survivors include her children, Ann (Roger) Ladd of Johnson Bayou, La., and Jan (Bill) Siems of Billings; granddaughter, Debi (Pat) Sewell and great-grandsons, Patrick and Taylor of Round Rock, Texas; grandson, Raymond (Veronica) McMurrey and great-grandchildren, Kristel and Mariel of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandson, Charles (Jackie) McMurrey and great-grandchildren, Bryce, Anna and Jackson of Billings; granddaughter, Clarissa Lockett of Houston, Texas; also many very special friends who were very dear to Amie.
Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial will be held. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, PO Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Robert T. Powers
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Robert Thomas Powers, 89, died on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Powder River Manor in Broadus.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Kane Funeral Home.
Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

SHERIDAN, Wyo. – John H. Schonenbach, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, from Ferries Funeral Home.
Funeral Liturgy will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday from Holy Name Catholic Church.
Interment will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery.
