Marie Bekel
Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away at St. Johns Lutheran Home on August 19, 2000.
Marie was born in Lincoln, Neb., on April 17, 1910, but always celebrated her birthday on March 17, due to limited record keeping at the time of her birth. She was one of nine children born to Konrad and Maria (Hershsteiner) Bell. The family relocated to West Billings where Marie attended school and helped out on the family farm.
She married Adam Bekel on Sept. 22, 1929. They lived and farmed in Huntley where they raised their two children, Jim and Donna. Marie remained on the farm for a number of years following Adam’s death in 1977. She later relocated to Billings and eventually moved into the St. John’s Lutheran Home in October 1994.
Marie retired from the Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative after many years of dedicated employment. She was an avid gardener and won many blue ribbons at the fair and at local flower shows. She enjoyed watching plants grow and loved working in the yard, garden, and fields with her family. She, along with her husband, were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church. She was also member of the Huntley Garden Club.
She always had the coffee pot on, so no one ever left her home hungry. She loved to bake. For many years she made plates of Christmas cookies for her friends and family. In addition, she enjoyed preparing holiday meals for her family until health precluded her from taking on this loving task.
Marie loved her children and grandchildren and was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She always had time for her children, grandchildren and her great grandchildren as well. She always looked forward to having “her kids” over for a visit, especially when it meant an over night stay (the longer the better).
She is survived by her son, Jim (Billie) Bekel, of Lavina; her daughter, Donna (Elden) Kristiansen, of Billings; her brother, Dan Bell, of Billings; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James, Phillip, Conrad and Dave Bell; by her sisters, Elizabeth Steinmetz, Katherine Franks, and Christina Ruby; and by her beloved great grandson, Oren Hough.
