Geraldine ‘Jerry’ Mikeson Greytak
Geraldine Mikeson Greytak, “Jerry” passed away on August 20, 2000, in Billings. She was born on Sept. 17, 1931, in Belt, Mont., the daughter of Michael and Lillian Mikeson.
Jerry grew up in the Geyser and Great Falls area. Jerry often joked that she graduated at the top of her class of three in Geyser in 1949. Afterwards, she moved to Great Falls where she met her husband, John J. Greytak.
John’s career and their travels took them around the world, but Montana’s Big Sky and simple honest lifestyle always called them home.
Jerry devoted her life to her family, her husband and to her home. Her family depended on her as the touchstone of the family.
Survivors include her sister, Charlene Newell of Great Falls; her brother, Lynn Taskila of Great Falls; her husband, John J. Greytak of Billings; her son, Michael and his wife, Sigrid of Billings; her son, John P. and his wife, Maggie and their children, Lindsey and John Jordan of Missoula; her daughter, Christine Greytak Schmechel and her husband, Mike and their sons, Matt, Joey and Tyler of Billings; her daughter, Patricia L. Greytak of Stevensville, Mont.
Funeral services are to be held Thursday, Aug. 24, at 11a.m., at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Billings Central Catholic High School Girls Basketball Program, 3 Broad-water, Billings, MT 59101.
Scott Charles Leedham
Scott C. Leedham, 70, of Billings passed away suddenly Friday, Aug. 18. 2000.
Scott was born to Tom William Leedham and Anna Scott Leedham on Nov. 2, 1929, in Glasgow, Mont. Scott was raised in Glasgow and graduated from high school there on May 28, 1947. Scott then attended the North Dakota School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D., and subsequently became a printer in New England, N.D.
Scott served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Combat. Following his military service Scott attended the University of Montana earning a Bachelor of Art Degree majoring in both Journalism and Sociology. Scott moved to Billings after graduation Dec. 16, 1955 and worked as a reporter for the Western Livestock Reporter
Scott then worked as a printer for the Billings Gazette.
On June 24, 1957, Scott married
the former Arleda Mae Guthrie. Scott was the proprietor of the Leedham Printing Company until he returned to the work at the Gazette in 1970. Scott retired from the Advertising Sales Department of the Gazette in 1985. In 1988, Scott became a licensed hearing aid dispenser, a occupation he practiced until his death.
Scott was President of the Chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity while at the University of Montana. He was a Master Mason and a lifelong member of the New England, N.D. Masonic Lodge. Scott was a longtime member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Billings where he and Arleda married
43 years ago. He is a member of the Disabled American Veterans and had been a member of Civitan Service Club, and Sertoma Service Club.
He is survived by his loving wife Arleda, his sons, Scott (Marilow) of Lompoc, Calf. and Kevin (Robyn) Myers of Billings; grandchildren, Vincent and Katherine, Kimberly, Brandee, Charity, Travis and two great grandchildren; his brother, Tom Leedham of Vancouver, B.C.; sisters, Betty Brownfield of Bozeman, and Ruth Addison of Oakhurst, Calf.; sister-in-law, Delores (Eugene) Jurovich of Billings, brother-in-law, Vinton (Linda) Guthrie, close nephews, Derek and Chase Guthrie, and nieces, Cerise Brown and Jean Ballantine, along with other well loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nina Hammock.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1935 Ave. B. Visitation will be at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West. Interment will be in Terrace Gardens cemetery. Memorials to the charity of your choice.
Josephine Muir Lenington
HARLOWTON – Josephine Muir Lenington, age 88, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 22, at Wheatland Memorial Hospital in Harlowton. Josephine was the daughter of Wheatland County pioneer ranchers, Joseph and Bertha Muir. She was born on the Muir Ranch west of Harlowton on Feb. 8, 1912. Her mother died when she was five years old; she and her brother and sisters were raised by their father, Joseph. She graduated from Harlowton High School and was valedictorian of her 1930 graduating class. She spent her entire life in the area. She married
Maxell Ross Lenington on Dec. 16, 1932. They homesteaded on the old Fitzpatrick place, where they built a poultry farm. Four children were born to them: Barbara Lenington Pearson, Maxell Ross Lenington, Jr., Sharon Lenington Maki and Linda Lenington Galahan.
Josephine was a homemaker, who loved her family and put them first in everything she did. She will be remembered for her vitality and determination. She loved to be involved in the lives of her children and was always there to lend a helping hand. Her life was guided by a strong faith in God, and a deep rooted sense of right and wrong.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Max; her parents; a brother, Nicolas Muir, and her sisters, Marjorie Muir Martin, Helen Muir Riggs, and Dorothy Muir Myers. She is survived by her children, 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Federated Church. Burial will be on the family farm. Arrangements were made by Perkins Funeral Home.
Clara Mattson
Clara Mattson, 92, passed away Aug. 20, 2000, at the Eagle Cliff Nursing Home in Billings, Mont.
Clara was born on Nov. 28, 1907, in Minnesota to Mary and John Iverson. While still a child, Clara moved with her family to Alamo, N.D. In 1930, she married
Kermit Opperud. They had three children: Donald, Jack and LaMae. Kermit died in 1950. In 1954, she married
Bernard Bentson. Clara is most noted for restoring an old school house that Bernard attended in Divide County, N.D. It is now a museum in Crosby, N.D. Ben passed away in 1967. In 1971, she married
Vern Mattson, and they made their home in Mesa, Ariz., where Clara enjoyed her retirement years. The Church was an important part of Clara’s life. She enjoyed singing, and well into her 80s she remained a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church choir in Mesa, Ariz. Vern passed away in 1996. In 1997, Clara moved to Billings, Mont.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents, her three husbands, her two sons, Jack in 1973 and Donald in 1990. Also preceding her in death her four sisters, Inga, Emma, Ida and Magnhild; five brothers, Palmer, Melvin, Olaf, Oscar and Tilford Iverson. Clara is survived by her youngest sister, Ellen Tucker of California. She is also survived by her only daughter, Joy LaMae Mitchell of Shepherd, Mont., her three granddaughters, Kathy Jo Opperud, Billings, Mont., Claire Ann Herland of Thompson, N.D., Laurie Bersanti of Butte, Mont.; four grandsons, Wayne Opperud of Billings, Rodney Opperud of Williston, N.D., Pat Mitchell and John Mitchell, both of Shepherd. Two daughters-in-law, Eileen Opperud of Billings and Betty Opperud of Alamo, N.D., along with 11 great-grandchildren also survive her.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Alamo, N.D. Interment will follow in the Alamo cemetery. Everson Funeral Home of Williston, N.D., is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Alamo cemetery Fund, PO Box 27, Alamo, ND 58830, or charity of choice.
Gayle L. McKinnon Hilton
Gayle L. McKinnon Hilton, 82, of Billings and formerly of Red Lodge, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Western Manor in Billings.
Survivors include her son, Craig Hilton and girl friend, Alicia, of 1536 Yellowstone Ave., No. C; best friend, David; two granddaughters, Charlotte and Lacy Hilton; and grandson, John Hilton.
Cremation has taken place. Upon her request, no services will be held. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Donna G. Olson
WILSALL – Donna G. Olson, 62, of Wilsall died Sunday evening, August 20, 2000 at her home east of Wilsall. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24 at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 No. 3rd St. in Livingston with the Rev. David Barnhart of Belgrade officiating. Graveside committal and burial will follow in Clyde Park cemetery.
Donna was born Oct. 12, 1937 in Watford City, N.D., the seventh of fourteen children of Gladys and A. W. Calkins. She spent her early life and attended schools in Watford City. On Oct. 16, 1953 she married
Robert D. “Bob” Walker in Sidney, Mont. They started their life together on the family ranch at Grassy Butte, N.D. and in the early 1960’s moved to Montana, eventually settling in the Shields Valley. Donna was more at home milking cows, stacking bales and driving tractor and she also enjoyed a good two-step every now and then, Bob died in 1987. On June 3, 1999, Donna married
Cliff Olson in Elko, Nev. Together they spent countless hours enjoying each other’s company while fishing at the Olson Pond and while traveling, Donna also enjoyed playing darts and following her grandchildren’s sporting events.
Survivors include her husband, Cliff Olson of Wilsall; two sons, Duane Walker of Gallatin Gateway and Lloyd Walker and his wife, Andrea of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; three daughters, Jennette Larson and her husband, Ed of Frenchtown, Mont., Ramona Fierro of Kalispell, Mont. and Beverly McLeland and her husband, Boe of Clyde Park; five brothers, Darwin Calkins and his wife, Lillian of Tucson, Ariz., Lloyd Calkins and his wife, Virginia of Velva, N.D., Eugene Calkins of Anchorage, Alaska, Everette Calkins and his wife, Lonnie of Chugiak, Alaska and Arnold Calkins of Killdeer, N.D.; seven sisters, Jessie Mikkelson and her husband, Sherman of Minot, N.D., Madeline Miller, Frankie Paslay and Connie Reimann all of Watford City, N.D., Oma Hebert and her husband, Paul of Larimore, N.D., Etheleen Knight and her husband, Neil of Renton, Wash., and Mary Ann Jay and her husband, Dan of Phoenix. Ariz.; ten grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog Sunny. In addition to her parents, and husband, Bob Walker, Donna was preceded in death by a brother Wallace Calkins.

Marguerite Patthey Barnard
TIGARD, ORE. – Marguerite Patthey Barnard was born in Bay Shore. Long Jsland, N.Y., Nov. 4, 1897, a daughter of Henry L. Patthey and Margaret Corcoran Patthey. She died Aug. 16, 2000, at Tigard. Her father, a Swiss emigrant and her Irish mother founded Patthey Floral which flourished for many years in Bay Shore. Marguerite was the last survivor of eight children.
Marguerite married
Neal Gedney Barnard who was stationed at the Naval Air Base in Bay Shore in 1920. They settled in Minneapolis when Neal joined the family contracting business. Neal passed away Dec. 11, 1968. They raised three children, Melvin (Mildred) of Tigard, Pastor Earl (Sharon) of Eagle, Idaho, and Lois (Jack) Nichol of Billings. Her grandchildren are Pamela Ells, Diane Beal, Douglas Barnard, Linda VanHeuvelen, Jacqueline Myers, Cherie Huiner, Kelley Barnard, Gail Jorgensen and Christine Engesser. She had fifteen great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Granny enjoyed her family, a series of German shepherds, baking cookies, reading, crocheting, all of nature and particularly being at the cabin on Rock Creek near Red Lodge.
We are thankful to have had this strong, energetic, generous, and loving lady with her amusing wit with us through the years. A private service will be held in Tigard and at a later date at the cabin.
Clement Batalden
BUFFALO, Wyo. – Clement Batalden, 94, died Aug. 17, 2000 in Buffalo.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Best Haven Memorial cemetery in Windom, Minn.
Thomas H. Beggin
Thomas Henry Beggin passed away Aug. 18, 2000. He was born March 11, 1927, the son of Thomas and Marguerite Beggin in Rockford, Ill. Tom grew up in Rockford, where he attended school. Tom served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was united in marriage to Donna Heller on Sept. 20, 1947. He worked at a machine shop in Rockford. Tom become a salesman in Denver for Conwed Company, moving to Billings Montana in 1966. Tom started his own business as a broker for building supplies in 1968, retiring in 1975. Tom loved to go camping, and hunting with friends and family. In his free time he enjoyed working in his garden. Tom was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, daughter, Kathy (Don) Olsen, and son, Fr. Tom Beggin all. of Billings; sister, Rosemary (Earl) Weiner of Marietta, Ga.; sister-in-law, Nancy Beggin of Honolulu, Hawaii, a grandson Chris Olsen. Tom was preceded in death by his sister, Marilynn Porte and brother, David Beggin.
Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Holy Rosary Church with luncheon. Interment in Sunset Memorial. Suzette Tanya Eagle
ASHLAND – Suzette Tanya Eagle, 26, died on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings.
Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the St. Labre Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, also at the church. Burial will be held in the St. Labre cemetery. Raush Funeral Home of Lame Deer is in charge of arrangements.
Jack Dale ‘JD’ Heidema
PRYOR – Jack Dale “JD” Heidema, 21, passed away at his home in Pryor, on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000.
JD was born in Billings on May 29, 1979, to Jack and Polly Heidema. JD attended schools in Billings, Bridger, Belfry and graduated from Fromberg High School in 1997.
At the time of his death, JD was employed as part of a pipe lining crew but his first and foremost passion was his relationship to the land which he loved with all his heart and soul. JD was just beginning to fulfill his lifelong dream of farming. He spent much of his free time fishing and hunting, most often accompanied by his best buddy “Dude.” He loved the outdoors and it wasn’t often that you would find him cooped up indoors. He was a natural athlete and enjoyed sports and excelled in football.
JD is survived by his father, Jack (Sydney) Heidema, his mother, Polly (Scott) Dickinson; his best friend and sister, Baylee Heidema; Uncle John and Aunt Connie, who had a very special hand in raising JD; Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Hank; cousin Pete; and the love of his life, Codi; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins to numerous to mention but not to be forgotten.
JD, Part of me will always remain with you, as part of you will always remain with me. Love, Pete.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial in celebration of JD’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Bridger Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. A private family gathering to scatter JD’s ashes will take place at Canyon Ranch in Pryor at a later date.
Rex Knight, Sr.
– Rex Knight, Sr., 80, died Aug. 18, 2000, at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Wibaux, with Father Boguslaw Kosmider officiating. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Wibaux, who are also in charge of arrangements. Interment will be in the Wibaux cemetery.
Harold Daniel ‘Boone’ Konen
In his Cadillac, Boone carried a fishing pole, his beer cooler, golf clubs, accordion, St. Christopher’s Medal and prayer book.
After a long battle with cancer, Dan passed away on Sunday. He was loved by his family and many, many good friends.
Dan was born in Butte, Mont. on Jan. 30, 1937 to Harold “Bus” and Angela Konen. He graduated from St. Ann’s school of Butte, Boys Central High School of Butte, and Western Montana College of Dillon.
He is survived by his sons, Dan of Billings and Steve of Phoenix; his daughters, Julie (Bruce) Wadsworth of Spokane and Holly of Billings; his grandchildren, Jake, Matthew, Maggie, Ellie, Joel and Payton; his mother, Angie of Butte, brothers, Jim (Betty) of Butte, and Tom of Georgetown Lake; and his sister, Rose Lee (Chester) Bullock of Basin, Mont.
He loved life and entertained us all with his music.
Dad we love you and are going to miss you.
Cremation has taken place. Due to construction at St. Patrick’s the memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. A memorial mass will also be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23 at St. Ann’s in Butte. Memorials may be made to the Northern Rockies Cancer Center.
Agnes Refsland Ronneberg
BIG TIMBER – Agnes Refsland Ronneberg, 87, lifelong resident of Big Timber, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Pioneer Nursing Home in Big Timber.
Agnes was born July 7, 1913 in Big Timber. She was the daughter of Marit Braa, an immigrant from Norway and Charles Freeberg, an immigrant from Sweden. She married
William Refsland, also a Norwegian immigrant, on Oct. 27, 1933 and had four children, David, Ruth, Gary and Diana. Agnes and William were married
until his death in 1962. In 1978, Agnes was married
to Lars Ronneberg, who had returned to Big Timber from Norway. Lars died in 1980. Her oldest son, David, died in 1993.
Agnes was a lifelong member of the Big Timber Lutheran Church and Friendship Club. She was also a member of Royal Neighbors of American, Phythian Sisters, Sons of Norway, American Legion Auxiliary, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include her sister, Annie Solberg of Big Timber and her brother Charles Roman Freeberg of Payson, Ariz. She is also survived by her children, Ruth, Gary and Diana; three step-children, Jan, Karen and Leif, her daughter-in-law, Marlene, her eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Big Timber Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Holmlund officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery. Lowry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
