Shirley Anne ‘Rucker’ Bothman
BIG TIMBER – Shirley Bothman, 61, passed away at Billings Deaconess Hospital on June 29, 2000. Shirley was born on Dec. 14, 1938, in Fort Benton. Her parents were Alton and Anna M. Rucker, She grew up and graduated high school from Geraldine in 1956.
Shirley served in the U.S. Air Force right out of high school. She then went back to Montana, met and married
Eddie Vukasin in Great Falls in 1959 and had two children. They were divorced in 1966. She then met and married
Barton H. Bothman in Big Timber on Oct. 24. 1969. She had two children with him.
During her life in Big Timber she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary-Sweet Grass Unit No. 19 for 20 years. During that time she was the Auxiliary President for three years and also a state Auxiliary Junior Membership chairperson for one year. She was a very active league bowler and attended many state bowling tournaments with her buddies.
She worked at the Sweet Grass Hospital for most of her life in Big Timber until it closed. She met and got to know many of the people in the community. She always knew the latest gossip!
Shirley loved good country music, her pets, and watching sports. She could compete with anybody about sports trivia. She was a great cook. There were always happy full stomachs at her many big holiday dinners she would host.
Her family was her life. She attended many sporting events and concerts for all of her children and grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her husband, Barton Bothman of Big Timber; daughter, Anna Vukasin of New York; son, Terry (Ronda) Vukasin of Billings; daughter, Kathi (Tracy) of Bozeman; son, Donald Bothman of Bozeman; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Kasia, and Tanner. Many of her “adopted” kids she acquired through her children’s school days; three brothers, Joel Rucker of Libby, Robert Rucker of Tucson, Ariz., Beryl Rucker of Helena; and many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Helen Bothman of Big Timber; five sister-in-laws and two brother-in-laws.
Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her two sisters, Phyllis Ray and Velma Scribner.
Mom was a wonderful woman with a huge heart, sweet and caring, always available to help with anything. She will be greatly missed by all.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, at the Big Timber cemetery. A reception will follow at the City Club Bowling Alley.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to your local humane society. Flowers may be sent to the City Club, 202 Anderson, Big Timber, MT on the afternoon of July 5th.
Addie E. Carpenter
WOLF POINT – Addie E. Carpenter, 96, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at the McCone Nursing Home in Circle.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, at the Assembly of God Church in Wolf Point. Interment will be in the Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the church. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge.
Blanche Mae Emett
Blanche Mae Emett, 79, of Billings, formerly of Anaconda, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Mark R. Haynes
JUDITH GAP – Mark R. Haynes, 87, of Judith Gap, passed away at the Harlowton Memorial Hos-pital and Nur-sing Home on June 23, 2000. Mark was a man with great compassion for his family, friends and community.
Mark Haynes was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Judith Gap, a son of George S. and Nettie M. Haynes. Mark attended grade school and high school in Judith Gap. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Billings Polytechnic, Montana State College and Principia College.
After a short stint working for his Uncle Charles Stone in Oregon, Mark returned to Judith Gap to purchase the Keim Drug Store in 1936. The Keim Drug Store was combined with the Ewing Grocery Store in 1938 and the Stone Hardware Store in 1949 to create Haynes Store, Inc. In addition to operating the store, Mark was a vice-president of the First National Bank of Judith Gap from 1951 to 1953, and he was part owner of the CB Bar Ranch with C.R. Stone and Robert Stone for several years. Mark moved the general store from downtown Judith Gap to a site adjacent to the newly constructed U.S. Highway 191 in 1952, and he owned and operated the store until 1981.
Mark married
Lucille Lora Walser on July 23, 1946. He met Lucille in Billings where she taught at Broadwater Elementary School. They were married
in North St. Paul, Minn., and returned to Judith Gap to make their home.
Mark was keenly interested in the Judith Gap community. He was elected mayor of Judith Gap in 1951 and continued as mayor for 35 years until 1986, giving him the distinction as Montana’s longest serving mayor.
Mark started the Tri-County Development Corporation to encourage economic development in the Judith Gap community in 1975. In October 1982, Mark was honored by the Montana State Food Distributor Association/National Grocers Association Good Government Award for “outstanding service in furthering the cause of good government in this country and being Mayor of Judith Gap for over 30 years.” In May 1985, he was honored by the Judith Gap Parent Teachers Association for his service to the community and school. In January 1997, Mark received a community service award from the Lewistown Chamber of Commerce as volunteer of the year.
He was a 60-year member of the Wheatland/Judith Masonic Lodge and a 50-year member of the Mary Stranahan Chapter of Eastern Star; a member of the Christian Science Church, an active supporter of the Judith Gap Community Methodist Church, and the Judith Gap cemetery Board; and an ardent fan of the Judith Gap Tigers sports teams. Many of his friends claim that he was the one-man chamber of commerce for Judith Gap.
Survivors include Lucille, his wife of 54 years; a daughter, Lorraine Peterson of Buffalo and her family (Jim Peterson, husband; Robert Peterson, son; Jennifer Salisbury, daughter and Ryan Salisbury, son-in-1aw); son, George Haynes of Bozeman and his family (Deborah Haynes, wife; and Maren Haynes, daughter); and a sister, Mabel O. Haynes of Judith Gap. Survivors also include five nephews and one niece.
Memorial services will be held at the Judith Gap Community Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29. Memorials may be sent to the Judith Gap Community Methodist Church, Judith Gap, MT 59453.
John R. Pace
LEWISTOWN – John R. Pace, 38, died Friday, June 30, 2000, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 3, at the Cloyd Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation will follow services.
Virgil L Palmer
BUFFALO – Virgil L. Palmer, 56, died on Saturday, June 25, 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 14, at the Adams Funeral Chapel. A private family interment will be held at a later time.
Gale ‘Pete’ Peterson
WOLF POINT – Gale “Pete” Peterson died on June 28, 2000, at Trinity Hospital at the age of 65 from emphysema.
He was born on Oct. 20, 1934, in Wolf Point to Percy and Ellen Peterson.
He married
Beulah Roy on June 10, 1956, in Wolf Point and they had just celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary.
He worked for Wolf Point Ready Mix for many years and later Wolf Point Sand & Gravel as a heavy equipment operator. Pete was known for his exceptional dirt work and was especially proud of that. He retired in 1998 due to his illness.
He took pride in his grandchildren and was so proud when his first grandson, Austin, was born in 1993 to go along with his granddaughters.
Pete loved to hear a good story or joke and loved hearing the stories his son-in-law would stop by to tell him after a jackpot roping.
He was an avid sports fan while watching his grandchildren at their school sports activities and loved to voice his opinion while watching.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah; daughters, Jeannie (Jerry) Archdale of Wolf Point, Terry Peterson of Great Falls, Brenda (Paul) Schilling of Cut Bank; grandchildren, Melanie, Melissa, Angie, Carrie Sue, Austin, Alexandra “Alex”, Casey; great-grandchildren, Cole; mother, Ellen Peterson; mother-in-law, Lizetta Roy; sisters, Carol Stolen and Bernice Tollefson; brother, Les Wilhelm.
He is preceded in death by his father and a granddaughter, Tera.
Services will be held on Monday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at the Clayton Memorial Chapel with Pastor Michael Kauffold officiating. Burial will be at the family plot at his home. Family Services will be held on Sunday, July 2, at 5 p.m. at the chapel.
Jeremy A. Rau
SIDNEY – Jeremy A. Rau, 22, died Friday, June 30, 2000, in a two vehicle accident east of Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at the Sidney Lutheran Brethren Church. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home is in charge.
Esther Lydia (Morton) Schmidt
Esther Lydia (Morton) Schmidt, age 93, left us on June 30, 2000, after a long and full life.
She was born Sept. 23, 1906, to Delmer and Hattie Morton at Retreat, Wis. She moved to Broadview in 1911 with her family where they homesteaded east of town.
Esther remained at home caring for her parents until she married
Paul Schmidt on April 22, 1941. They farmed east of Broadview where two sons and one daughter were born.
Survivors include her sons, Delmer (Carolyn) Schmidt and Roy (Valerie) Schmidt of Billings; her daughter, Doris Schmidt of Lafayette, La.; grandsons, Paul Schmidt and Brian (Becky) Schmidt of Billings, and Eric Shaffer and Dane Shaffer of Lafayette; granddaughter, Kimberley (Dave) Sanderlin of Billings; five great-grandsons, Jordan and Zachery Schmidt and Korbin Sanderlin of Billings, and Jason Shaffer and Dane Shaffer, Jr. of Lafayette; a stepdaughter, Beverly Trask of Billings; and many, many friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Schmidt (1952); six brothers, Everett, Dwight, Homer, Mark, Alvaro and Carl; two sisters, Bessie Long and Elaine Morton; and a stepson, Freddie Schmidt.
Mom loved playing cards, bowling and knitting as long as she could, but she loved children more than life. Mom always said she would be happy to see her three children graduate from high school. She never believed she would see five grandchildren graduate high school – or the birth of five great-grandsons. Life has come full circle for a Morton generation that spans 104 years. You are all back together again mom and we thank you all for the memories.
Visitations may be made at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. between noon and 5 p.m. Monday; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Weds. and Thurs. prior to the service. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2000 at the Smith West Chapel. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Dennis D. Simard
BOZEMAN – Dennis Duane Simard, 55, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena after a very courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, at Resurrection Parish in Bozeman. Dokken Nelson Funeral Home is in charge.

BIG TIMBER – Shirley A. Botham, 61, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.

Bertha Halstead
BEACH, N.D. – Bertha Halstead, 92, of Longmont, Colo., formerly of Beach, died in Longmont on June 27, 2000.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Beach. A Rosary/Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach.
Blanche P. House
CODY, Wyo. – Blanche P. House, 88, died Wednesday, June 29, 2000, at the West Park Long Term Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Mountview cemetery at Basin.

Eugene F. Werlinger
GREYBULL, Wyo. – Eugene Frank Werlinger, 66, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, in Billings.
Visitations have been set for Monday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Atwood Family Chapel in Greybull. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 3, in the Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1431. Cremation will follow the funeral services.
Edwin ‘Moose’ Zaidlicz
Edwin “Moose” Zaidlicz, 81, of Billings, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at his home. He was born in Jeannette, Pa., and was raised in Chicago.
During World War II, Mr. Zaidlicz served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier on B-29 Bombers in the China-India-Burma Theater as well as the Marianas. He flew 38 combat missions, attaining the rank of captain and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and five Battle Stars.
After the war, he attended Iowa State University, earning a degree in forestry. For the next 33 years, he worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, D.C., and Montana. He retired in 1979 in Billings as the Montana state director.
After his retirement, “Moose” remained active in community affairs, serving on the Montana Board of Health and Environmental Science from 1981 to 1987, and becoming involved with local issues as diverse as sulfur dioxide pollution, state parks, and the Youth Services Center.
Mr. Zaidlicz enjoyed fishing, hunting, and backpacking throughout Montana as well as spending time with his numerous friends in Billings. He was preceded in death by his wife, June, in 1994.
He is survived by his son, Mike of Anchorage, Alaska, and his daughter, Carol of Oakland, Calif.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Montana State Parks Association or the Deaconess Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.
