Arlene Grimsrud
PLENTYWOOD – Funeral services for Arlene Grimsrud will be held at 2p.m. Wednesday, July 5. Pastor Barbara Westhoff will officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; interment will be in Antelope Creek cemetery. Arlene, 76, died Sunday morning, July 2, 2000, at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood after a battle with cancer.
Arlene was born Aug. 25, 1923, at Westby, Mont., to Erick and Carrie Wold Eggen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, attended Pleasant Valley country grade school and graduated from Westby High School in 1941.
Arlene took a secretarial course at Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis and then worked in Minneapolis for 1 1/2 years. She returned to Montana and was employed with the A.S.C.S. office in Plentywood prior to her marriage to Gorden Grimsrud on June 17, 1945. They farmed in Archer community for 10 years prior to farming in Antelope, Mont.
Arlene’s main interest was in family and helping in their activities. She enjoyed reading, handwork, baking, playing card games, dancing and traveling. She spent 18 winters in Arizona. The highlight of her travel was a trip to Norway in 1968 to visit relatives.
Arlene was a member of the Plentywood Lutheran Church, WELCA and a life member of Antelope’s Fremgang Lodge of the Sons of Norway. They retired and moved to Plentywood in 1985.
Survivors include her husband, Gorden; her son, Ronald (twin) and his wife, Linda and grandson, Phillip of Colstrip, Mont.; her son, Vernon and his wife, Gayle and grandchildren, Justin, Monica, Mallory, and Garth of Townsend, Mont.; her brother-in-law, Orvin Grimsrud and his wife, Kay of Billings; and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin son, Donald; and by her brother, Maynard Eggen, who died June 20. Survivors also include Maynard’s wife, Clara of Westby and Sun City, Ariz.
Fulkerson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Diane McElvain Hester
JUDITH GAP – Diane McElvain Hester, 51, died in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Wednesday, June 28, 2000.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at Judith Gap Methodist Church. Interment will be in Judith Gap cemetery. Perkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Vernon ‘Vee’ Hunter
Vernon ‘Vee’ Hunter of Billings, Mont., passed away at home on July 2, 2000.
Vee Hunter was born on Dec. 17, l916, in Driggs, Idaho, as the eldest of nine children of Adam and Emma Hill Hunter. Vee spent his childhood at a logging camp in Idaho near the Teton Mountains and graduated from Firth High School in l937.
Vee was an outstanding athlete in basketball, football, and boxing, later becoming a Golden Gloves welter weight champion for Wyoming and Montana in the National Boxing Finals in Kansas City.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Maree Sorensen in Lovell, Wyo., on April 21, l940, and lived in Worland, Wyo., for several years, where he worked at Big Horn Chevrolet. During the time the Hunters lived in Worland, their family grew to include Michael, Brent, VeeAnn, Kim and Shelley. Vee especially enjoyed fishing and hunting in the Big Horn Mountains with his sons and friends.
After Worland, Vee became associated with the trucking industry and followed employment to Casper, Wyo; Bozeman, Mont.; and finally moving to Billings, where he completed his career with Billings White Trucking Co. Vee always enjoyed helping people with their car and trucks problems, especially his grandchildren later in his life. During retirement, Vee loved being outdoors with his grandchildren, ball games, fishing, hunting, or working in his well-tended garden. His entire neighborhood enjoyed the bounty of his gardens. He especially enjoyed fishing on the Pacific Ocean with his son, Mike, who operates a charter boat in California. Vee and Maree celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year and had been previously sealed in marriage in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. His family includes his wife, Maree; Michael (and Liz) of Sheltered Cove, Calif.; Brent (and Linda) of Edmonds, Wash., VeeAnn Woody of Sheridan, Wyo., Kim (and Patty) of Billings and Shelley (and Joe) Ulrickson of Billings. Vee's much loved grandkids and great-grandkids include Michelle Nauman (Tom/with Cole and Cambry) and Barry Hunter (Becky) of Austin Texas, Chad Hunter, Collin Hunter (Victoria/with Maya), and Whitney Hausske (Jason/with Celia) of Seattle, Wash., Colby Woody (with Cord) of Sheridan, and Brandy Davis (Joe) of Minneapolis, Minn., and Traver Hunter (Alina) and Korey Hunter of Billings, and Marisa Ulrickson, Delaney Ulrickson, and Kelsey Ulrickson of Billings.
Services will be held at the LDS Church on Monad Avenue on Thursday, July 6, at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Terrace Gardens cemetery in Billings. Vee's grandsons with Joe Ulrickson will serve as the pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Vee's brothers, Von of Portland, Ore., Rex of Worland, Wyo., and Forest of Blackfoot, Idaho, along with his friends, Dee Bradshaw of Worland, Wyo., Ed Wiest and John Rippy of Billings.

Robert Grant Kercheval
BRIDGER – Robert Grant Kercheval, 65, of Bridger, formerly of Miles City and Broadus, passed away Friday, June 30, 2000, at his home.
Robert was born on Sept. 24, 1934, in Biddle, Mont., the son of Ulysses Grant and Alice (Sessions) Kercheval. He attended school in Biddle. Bob enlisted in the United States Army in 1954. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Montana where he ranched and worked as a heavy equipment operator. He also drove truck for many years. Bob and Mary met in 1982 and later made their home in Bridger.
Bob enjoyed visiting with his buddies. He loved fishing, hunting, riding horses, and traveling with his family. He was a member of the VFW and the National Rifle Association.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Kercheval of Bridger; his children, Chris Klamm of Ashland; Bobby and Tina Kercheval of Belfry; Lisa and Les Poland of Nashua; and Dave and Janice King of Fromberg; two sisters, Ruby Olson and Bessie Ritter both of Broadus; and Sam Eads of Reno, Nev., who he loved as a brother; seven grandchildren, Bill, John, Josh, Garrett, Cody, Katlin, and Justin; one great grandchild, Gina; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; a step-daughter, Roberta; and a grandson, Bo. Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, July 5, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus with military rites. Private family interment will follow. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Broadus is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the family of Robert Kercheval in care of Mary Kercheval, RT 1 Box 1123, Bridger, MT 59014.

Troy S. Pierce
SIDNEY – Funeral services for Troy S. Pierce, 29, of Sidney, will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the First Lutheran Church in Savage, Mont., with Pastor Alton Hillesland officiating. Casketbearers are: Darrin Eschenbacher, Donny Lunstad, Doug Lunstad, Troy Hafele, Paul Hagler, John Boy Berger, Tim Kohntopp and Jerry Andreasen. Honorary casketbearers are all of Troy’s friends and family. Ushers are Dan Rice and Daniel Jr. Rice. Interment will be in the Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park in Billings.
Troy Sean Pierce was born on Nov. 29, 1970, in Great Falls, Mont., the son of Norman Pierce and Beverly (Dallman) Alberg. The family moved to Red Lodge where Troy attended 1st grade. Later the family moved to Rawlins, Wyo., before moving to Sidney for three years. Then they moved to Savage where Troy graduated from the Savage High School in 1989. Troy played football and enjoyed the trumpet. After high school, Troy attended ND State School of Science in Wahpeton. He returned to Savage and worked with his stepfather, Steve Alberg, and his mother at the Valley Fuel. He then worked for Frank Reed Construction and later for Trans-systems for three years and also worked campaigns at Holly Sugar. Troy was united in marriage to LaRita Berger on Aug. 8, 1998, in Sidney, Mont. In March of 1998, Troy and John Berger started J&T Trucking where he was presently working.
Troy enjoyed fishing, camping, and working on his cars. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Troy died Friday, June 30, 2000, in an auto accident east of Sidney.
Surviving him are: his wife, LaRita Pierce of Sidney; son, Sean Pierce of Sidney; two step-sons, Mathew Berger and Cody Berger, both of Sidney; his mother and step father, Beverly and Steve Alberg of Billings, Mont; his father, Norman Pierce of Jasper, Texas; grandmothers, Shirley Alberg of Hibbing, Minn., and Ann Marie Pierce of Great Fall, Mont.; three sisters, Tracey (Allen) Higgins of Billings, Terry (Jerry) Andreasen of Sidney, and Tammy Pierce of Billings; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by infant brother, Richard, grandfather, Ted Alberg, grandfather Pierce and the Dallman grandparents.

Elizabeth Rider
Elizabeth Rider, age 98, of Billings, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at St. John’s Lutheran Nursing Home surrounded by her children and their spouses.
She was born April 22, 1902, in Dittle, Russia. Her parents were Mary Elizabeth Mill and John Henry Lackman. She came to America in 1906 at the age of four. She married Alexander Rider on Nov. 23, 1924, in Laurel, Mont. They had three daughters and five sons; Rose and Don Greenwalt of Walla Walls, Wash., Florence and Albert Hessler of Billings, Walter and Joane Rider of Billings, Lawrence and Pearl Rider of Hardin, Mont., Albert and Ella Rider of Billings, Don and Eula Rider of Missoula, Mont., and Shirley and Maynard Smith of Billings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex, in 1982, her son, Herman Rider and grandson, Steve Rider. She had 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
After their marriage, they settled on a farm west of Billings and farmed in surrounding areas of Billings and Custer before settling on a farm north of Hardin in 1934. On retiring in 1960., they moved to Billings. They traveled extensively and spent many winters in Yuma, Ariz. After her husband’s death, she stayed alone in their home until the age of 93.
Elizabeth had dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age. She enjoyed reading, especially her German song book and the bible. When no longer able to read, she loved listening to the Bible on cassettes. Many people have wonderful memories of her loving hospitality and the delicious food she prepared. She spent many hours crocheting and sharing her handiwork with her family. Her family was her life and they will always cherish the memories of a wonderful Mom and loving Grandmother.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 409 S. 36th St. Interment will follow at Mountview cemetery. Visitation will start 4 a.m. Tuesday at Smith’s Downtown Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Pilgrim Congregational Church.

William Manning ‘Bill’ Shirah
BOZEMAN – William Manning ‘Bill’ Shirah, 84, of Bozeman, died early Thursday afternoon, June 29, 2000, as the result of injuries he sustained in a two vehicle automobile accident in Bozeman. A family visitation was held Friday, June 30, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston. Cremation followed at Franzen-Davis Crematory. Memorial services for family and close friends will be held at the Wan-I-Gan south of Livingston on his birthday, Aug. 22, 2000.
Bill was born Aug. 22, 1915, in Macon. Ga., the son of Roy and Rowena (White) Shirah. He spent most of his childhood in Georgia after which he moved to Washington, D.C. While in Washington, he met and married Elina Kyhl. They were later divorced but have remained good friends. Bill lived for a time in Billings before moving to Bozeman in the mid-1970s.
Bill’s life was always active, even on his last day when he was running errands for his friend, Chet, at Mid-Town Auto in his beloved, newly painted Grand Am. One of Bill’s greatest accomplishments was starting the Billings Ambulance Service. During his lifetime, he had opened a roadhouse in Maryland during the prohibition, owned Fat Boy’s Drive Inn at the fairgrounds in Billings, and had worked as cross-country truck driver. He was also involved in the promotion of professional wrestling. In his later years, Bill developed his famous “Papa Bill’s Hot Sauce” which he sold at Farmer’s Market and enjoyed giving to family and friends. He loved big band music and had played the drums and bass viola in various bands.
Survivors include his son, Eugene Kyhl Shirah of Emigrant, Mont., his daughter, Annelle Castleberry of Baja, Calif., and will be greatly missed by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cards or memorials of the donor’s choice may be sent in care of Elina Shirah, 54 Big Sky Drive, Billings, MT 59102.

Margaret Birtic
BAKER – Margaret Birtic, 80, passed away on July 1, 2000, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. Family will greet friends on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at the Stevenson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Stevenson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Old Catholic Section of the Bonnievale cemetery in Baker. Stevenson Funeral Home of Baker is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Lee Davis
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Howard Lee Davis, 87, of Englewood, and formerly of Eden, Idaho, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at the Castle Rock Care Center in Castle Rock, Colo.
Howard was born June 25, 1912, in Eden, Idaho to James W. Davis and Ethel May Stokesberry Davis. He was raised in Jerome, Idaho and Eden, Idaho. In 1940, he moved to Montana and resided there until recently, when he moved to Colorado, to live with his oldest son and family for health reasons. Howard was united in marriage to the former Gladys P. Jordon on Sept. 13, 1936, in Mackay, Idaho, and they had two sons. Mr. Davis worked as a long haul truck driver after moving to Montana. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors until his health prevented him from getting around.
Howard is survived by two sons, Howard L. Davis of Englewood, Colo., and James W. Davis of Jerome, Idaho; seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gladys; his parents; one grandson; and siblings.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings, Mont. Interment of ashes will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Billings.

Lynden Lyle Haynes
On Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the age of 53, Lyn Haynes died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Lyn was born in Glasgow, Mont., the son of E. Lyle and Oris (Strommen) Haynes on Nov. 6, 1946. He grew up in Saco where he attended high school and graduated in 1964. He lived in Saco, where his family ranched for many years. He truly enjoyed the ranching way of life. He also resided in Missoula and Billings.
Lyn proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968, completing 11/2 tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars.
On Dec. 22, 1968, Lyn was united in marriage to Linda D. Crocker in Columbus, Ga. While living in Saco, Lyn was an active member of the Saco School Board and was also a member of the Northwest Mining Association while employed with Dateline Drilling. He was the General Manager for Dateline Drilling & Mineral Exploration. Lyn enjoyed team roping, and loved golfing, playing Bingo Bango with his friends, and all outdoor activities. Everyone who met and got to know Lyn was treated with kindness and respect. He was a hard worker and loyal employee and friend. Lyn’s greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Linda; his sons, Lynden ‘Lindy’ Haynes, Jr. and wife Rachael, Steven Haynes and wife Camilla, and Scott Haynes and Anne Oie; granddaughter, Haley Lyn; father, E. Lyle Haynes, mother, Oris Dahlen, step-father, Roger Dahlen; brother, Ron Haynes and wife Lexie as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings, Monday, July 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be in Saco at 3 p.m. Wednesday July 5, at the Saco Methodist Church with a private family interment of ashes north of Saco. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, 1041 N. 29th, Billings, 59101.

Troy S. Pierce
SIDNEY – Troy S. Pierce, 29, passed away Friday, June 30, 2000, in an auto accident East of Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the First Lutheran Church in Savage, Mont. with burial in Billings. Friends may call at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Sidney, Monday, July 3 in the afternoon, and Tuesday, July 4 in the afternoon.

Malik Michael Poulton Walters
Our little angel, Malik Michael Poulton Walters, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, July 1, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. He will be forever remembered by his parents, Amy Poulton and Michael Walters of Billings; his brother, Eric Walters of Anaconda; his maternal grandparents, Lary and Sue Poulton of Malta; his paternal grandparents, Dave and Corleen Walters of Billings; his maternal great-grandparents, Dick and Sally McEldery of Dillon and Lois and the late, Charles Poulton of Winnett; his paternal great-grandmothers, Gertie Harper and Mary Walters of Billings; numerous aunts, uncles and close friends.
Cremation is planned and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials in Malik’s name may be directed to the Ronald McDonald House, 1144 N. 30th, Billings, MT 59101. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist had charge of arrangements.

Albert L. Aamold
STANFORD – Albert L. Aamold, 81, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center in Lewistown.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at the Creel Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Stanford cemetery.

Frances Alexander
LAUREL – Frances Alexander, age 75, of Laurel passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Billings. She was born on July 1, 1924, in Geddes, S.D., to Earl and Elsie Gordon.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; four husbands; her companion Leo Mortz; three brothers; and two children.
She leaves behind three sisters, Dora May Abbey of Billings, Alice Serr of Okla., June Rose of S.D.; one brother, Earl Gordon of Laurel; nine children, Peggy (Tom) Brennan of Roberts, Roberta Bartels of Sout Dakota, Janice Verland and Gloria Walther, both of New Mexico, Robert (Marge) Moran of South Dakota, Albert (Rhona) Moran of California, Roy (Peggy) Moran of South Dakota, and Dale Songer, Jr. and Danny Ray Songer, both of Texas. Frances made friends wherever she went.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel. Interment will take place at the Laurel cemetery. Memorials may be made to Aspen Meadows in Billings or memorial of choice. Mother and sister, rest in peace and may God bless you, for you deserve it.
