Lincoln Wadman
ROUNDUP – Lincoln Wadman, 80, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the Central Montana Medical Center in Lewistown, Mont.
Linc was born Feb. 12, 1920, at the family ranch near Winnett in Petroleum County to Waford and Mary Johnson Wadman.
Linc was very proud to have been a member of the Winnett Boxing Club from 1937 to 1940. They were billed as the Greatest Amateur Boxing Team ever assembled in the Northwest.
He enlisted in the Navy Oct. 8, 1940, being honorably discharged Nov. 8, 1946. He served aboard USS Brooklyn and USS Pennsylvania. He was awarded Asiatic Pacific, 1 Star, American Area, European - African-Middle East, 4 Stars, America Defense, 1 Star, Good Conduct Medal, 1 Star, World War II Victory Medal. He also participated in the first and second atomic bomb test sites in the Pacific.
He married
Billie Jorgenson, to this union three children were born, Linda, John, and Monte. They later divorced. He married
Betty (Flo) Ramsey in Choteau on Sept. 15, 1961, to this union two boys were born, Gary and Greg.
Survivors are: Betty, his wife; Dan (Paulette) Ramsey, Julie (Jim) Dyson, John, Monte, Linda Wadman, Greg Wadman, Mike Elich, Torn (Kathy) Elich; sisters, Hulda Bohn, Mildred Shelton; sisters-in-law, Blanche Wadman of Cutbank and Blanche Wadman of Winnett; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. preceded in death by his son Gary; brothers, Ted and Vic; his parents and two sisters.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services with military honors will take place later this summer. Wier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Raymond J. Knoll
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Raymond J. Knoll, 77, died Saturday, April 29, 2000.
Graveside services will be held at Holy Cross cemetery in Billings, Mont., at a later date.
Eugene E. ‘Gene’ Burtch
FORT BENTON – Eugene E. “Gene” Burtch, 82, formerly of Livingston, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Benefis East Hospital in Great Falls.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home in Livingston. Graveside committal and interment will follow in Shorthill cemetery south of Livingston.
Harold Ralph Renz Sr.
POPLAR – Harold Ralph Renz Sr., 58, left to be with Our Heavenly Father on Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Billings Deaconess Hospital. He was born on May 22, 1941, in Poplar, Mont., to Lucille Gibbs Renz and Ralph Shepherd. Harold attended school in Poplar and Glasgow.
He attended the College of Great Falls pursuing a degree in Human Resources. He recently attended the Fort Peck Community College in various studies. He has a versatile employment background which included: social worker, Ft. Peck Tribes Juvenile Officer, Poplar Schools home school coordinator, and Ft. Peck Head Start bus driver.
Harold is survived by his mother, Lucille Gibbs Samuelson and long time companion and special friend, Iola Scott. He married
Barbara Shawl on January 23, 1960, in Los Angeles, Calif. They were married
for 24 years. From that union came four children: Robyn Baker (Pat), Harold Renz Jr. (Vicky), Daniel Renz Sr. (Justine), and Jeanine Renz-Black Dog (Bobby), all of Poplar. Other surviving children include three sons, Reggie Scott (Pauline), Poplar, Harold “Po” Lindsay, Minot, N.D., and Ralph Hamilton (Shannon), Poplar; daughter, Starla Longee, Poplar; and adopted sons, Robert Scheaffer Jr. (Jewel) of Ft. Belknap and Ray Eldon Eder and the rest of The Boys, Poplar; his sisters, Maxine Vantine (Wendell), Monterey, Calif., Roberta Garfield, Alma Jean Renz, and Nancy Samuelson Foote (Albert), all of Poplar. He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Shepherd, and brother, Richard V. Gibbs.
He has numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Harold greatly loved his family and loved spending time with them. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. He liked spending time at Keno and Bingo with his buddies. He will be greatly missed as he touched so many lives. Harold was outgoing and personable. He was liked by many people. We love you and miss you dad, grandpa, son, brother, and uncle.
Prayer services will be held at the Poplar Cultural Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, with funeral services at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, at the Poplar Cultural Center, burial at the Poplar City cemetery. The Reverend Enright Bighorn will be officiating.
Montana A. Arrington
TUCSON, Ariz. – Montana A. Arrington, 81 died on April 28, 2000. She is survived by her husband, George Arrington of Tucson; daughter, Yvonne Bethel of Tucson; son, Bill Arrington of Loveland, Colo.; grandchildren, Steve Cassell of Portland, Ore., Scott Cassell of Tucson, Linda Ruhser of Denver, Colo., Heidi Arrington of Ft. Collins, Colo., Billy Arrington of Loveland, Colo., Paul Arrington of Loveland. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 750 W. Chapala Drive, Monday, May 1, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Carla Williams officiating. Donations may be made in memory of Montana to the Arthritis Foundation, 616 N. Country Club Road, Tucson, 85716. Nettie Alice Nevin
BIG TIMBER – Nettie Alice Nevin, 87, passed away at the Pioneer Medical Center of natural causes on Sunday, April 30, 2000. Nettie was born on Aug. 22, 1912, in Cottonwood, Idaho, to John Clyde and Etta Mae (Gentry) Farthing. The family moved to Big Timber in the Gibson country on Nov. 4, 1915. She last her hearing at the age of two and therefore gained her education at the Deaf School in Boulder, Mont.
She married
Oswald Nicholas Nevin on Aug. 27, 1928, in Big Timber, Mont. Nettie was always cheerful and happy as she touched many lives. She worked as a dishwasher at the Fryer Cafe, as a nurses aide at the Pioneer Nursing Home for five years, but most of all she was devoted to her loving family, as the hugs she gave became her trademark. After the death of her husband, Oswald, in 1987, Jenny, her hearing dog, became her faithful companion for the rest of her life. Mom we love you and will always miss you.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Donald Farthing; sisters, Josephine Ray, Leah Weamer, and Georgia Jones.
Nettie is survived by her two sons, Oswald of Cardwell, Mont., Robert (Barbara) of Whitehall, Mont.; three daughters, Sharon (Carl) Mosness of Big Timber, Mont., Ellen Jenicek of Couer d’Alene, Idaho, Marilyn (Daryl) Blumhagen of Billings; one brother, John Farthing of Big Timber; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and also Jenny, her hearing dog and companion for 12 years.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 4, at the Big Timber Lutheran Church with interment following at the Mountain View cemetery. Viewing will be held Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Lowry Funeral Home.
Robert Stanley Raundal
HELENA – Robert Stanley Raundal died Saturday afternoon, April 29, 2000, working in his yard. He was born in Lewistown, the only child of Willa (Snartland) and Amund Knutson Raundal.
He graduated from high school in Hobson and went to CC Camp in Oregon. He married
Orene Archibald and they raised three daughters, JoAnn, Willa and Mary.
Bob delivered mail and worked on a sheep ranch to make extra money, and on March 1944, he and Orene made a down payment on a ranch at Winnett, which he operated until Governor Judge appointed him Chief Field Administrator for the State Land Department. Governor Judge appointed him to the State Tax Appeals Board in 1975, on which he later served as Chairman until his retirement in February 1987.
Bob had an extensive career in serving his community. He served on the Flatwillow Community Hall Board, Fergus Electric REA (serving as president 14 of the 23 years), Big Brothers Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Gates of the Mountains Foundation, and Lions Club.
He belonged to the Helena Elks, Lewistown Eagles, Jerusalem Masonic Lodge, and Sons of Norway.
Bob was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church and was very interested in the youth camp, Camp Marshall at Flathead Lake. He counted the cash on Monday mornings and would not let anything, with the exception of going south for the winter, interfere with his commitment. Bob was a card carrying Democrat and very active in several campaigns including his own. He served four terms in the House of Representatives from Petroleum County.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Orene; wife, Patricia; and son-in law, Chuck Rude.
Bob is survived by daughters, JoAnn and Jack Clark, Willa and Bill Solf, and Mary Rude; stepson, Jack Maples; grandchildren, Lorrie (John) Moos, Jay (Kiddo) Clark, Chris (Donna) Clark, Marge (Gary) Flint, Ron (Lisa) Solf, Barb Solf, Jimmie (Michelle) Rude and Jason (Robin) Rude; great-grandchildren, Drew and Mick Moos, Kevin and Megan Flint, Debra, Zack, Roger and Kala Clark, Joey, Jace and Josh Solf, Elysha, Riley, Mikayla, and Shelby Rude.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 2, 1 p.m., in the Moccasin cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the charity of your choice.
Ralph Schanz
Ralph Schanz, 80, of Billings, formerly of Ryegate, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Aspen Meadows. He was born May 19, 1919, south of Ryegate, the son of Frank and Eva Schaff Schanz. He served in the Army during WWII.
On May 19, 1944, he married
Millie Helmerichs. They farmed in the Big Coulee until moving to Ryegate in 1976. In 1997, they moved to Billings. His greatest enjoyment were ranching, his grandchildren, playing pinochle and reading western books.
Survivors include his wife Millie; three children Judy (Don) Olson of Banks, Ore., Larry (Joy) Schanz of Ryegate and Sandy (Jim) McCombs of Billings; eight grandchildren, Dan, Janelle and Steve Olson; Kim and Jeff Schanz and Brian, Renee and Stacey McCombs; and a sister, Florence Ott of Sidney. Preceding him in death were his parents, six brothers and two sisters.
Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Cremation or Funeral Gallery. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Ryegate. Rite of Committal will follow in the Catholic cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, the Ryegate Funeral Luncheon Fund, or the charity of choice.
John Henry Schaeffer
SEDONA, Ariz. – Dr. John Henry Schaeffer, 76, of Sedona, Ariz., died in a car accident on the Natchez Trace Parkway near Florence, Ala., on April 20, 2000. He and his wife, Marjorie Schaeffer, were visiting their daughters in Nashville and Jackson, Miss.
Dr. Schaeffer was born on June 23, 1923, in Valparaiso, Ind., and was raised in Michigan City, Ind. He attended college and medical school at the University of Chicago, graduating with his M.D. in 1946. At that time, he also received his commission as first lieutenant in the medical corps. He married
Marjorie Ruth Daugherty in the Thorndike Hilton Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago on Aug. 31, 1946.
After his internship at Augustana Hospital in Chicago and a residency in Portland, Maine, Dr. Schaeffer worked at the Sunny Acres tuberculosis sanitorium in Cleveland, Ohio. He served with the Public Health Service in Shawnee, Okla. In 1955, he moved with his family to Billings, Mont., where he established his private practice in internal medicine. He was active in setting up tuberculosis clinics on reservations in Montana and Wyoming. He continued to consult for the Indian Health Service throughout his career. He also served as medical director of St. John’s Lutheran Home in Billings. He was an elder and deacon in the First Presbyterian Church.
In 1987, Dr. and Mrs. Schaeffer moved to Sedona, Ariz. He was past president of the Westerners hiking club and a member of the Red Rovers Four Wheel Drive Club. He enjoyed photography and was a member of the Camera Club. He volunteered as a nature guide at Red Rock State Park. He was a member of the Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona. Dr. Schaeffer also enjoyed traveling and spending summers at the family cabin near Red Lodge, Mont.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Ruth Schaeffer, daughters Nancy Lobb of Jackson, Miss., Patricia Jordan of Nashville, Tenn., and Kathryn Canan of Citrus Heights, Calif.; brother, Riley Schaeffer of Boulder, Colo.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Thomas Riley Jordan.
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service in Sedona will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be sent to a fund in Dr. Schaeffer’s name at the Church of the Red Rocks, 54 Bowstring, Sedona, AZ 86336.
Ralph Schanz

Ervin J Slavick
Ervin J Slavick, 68 of Billings passed away Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of congestive heart failure. He was born May 22, 1931 in Judson, N.D. the son of Joe and Bessie Slavick. Erv graduated from High School in Mandan, N.D. and served during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. He married
Delphia C. Fitterer on Feb. 1 1955 in Bismarck. They moved to Billings where he went to work for Western Airlines and later for Delta as a Customer Service Representative. He semi-retired in 1993 and loved to work as a builder doing remodeling projects. He enjoyed camping, going to the Hockey games, watching NBA and NFL games. Erv especially loved being with his boys and family.
Survivors include his wife, Delphia, two sons, Jeff (Anne) Slavick, Joel (Pat) Slavick, two granddaughters, Alisha and Joy; grandpuppies Stephanie, Hayley, Biarttz, and Buddy all of Billings; one brother, Kenny of Dickinson; and two sisters, Val (Ervin) Hoesel of Billings, and Eileen (Jim) Gerl of Mandan. Erv preceded in death by his parents.
Everyone’s lives were touched by Erv’s kindness, knowledge and sense of humor.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the American Lutheran Church, Lewis & Division St. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of choice. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Ray Smith
Ray Smith was born Sept. 28, 1917 in Windsor, Colo. His family moved to Montana in 1929 and farmed west of Billings. He enlisted in the Marines, serving in the South Pacific. Ray married
Ollie Young in Bremerton, Wash. After she passed away, he married
Alvena Klundt. They farmed until they moved to Billings in 1992. They traveled extensively all over the world. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and gardening
Ray is survived by his wife, Alvena; three children, Carla (Richard) Noyes and Sheri (Ray) Caporalle of Calf. and Randy (Judy) Smith of Billings; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; three step children, Kevin (Roxy) Klundt of Billings, Fred Klundt of Nev., and Theresa (Mike) Van Brunt of Ariz.; nine step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; and two sisters, Frieda Bott and Donna Anderson.
Greatly loved, Ray will be greatly missed. Your trial is over–the battle done. You said, “I’ll walk just beyond the moon; then I’ll stop and wait for you.”

Velma Jean McCurry
HELENA – Velma Jean McCurry, 74, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2000. Cremation has taken place at the Bozeman-Belgrade Crematory located in the Dokken-Nelson building. There are no services planned at this time.
Perry N. "Red" Svingen
MISSOULA – Perry N. "Red" Svingen, 80, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Utah State Veterans' Home in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“Red, ” as family and friends knew him, was born Nov. 18, 1919, to Edward and Inger Svingen in Frazer, Mont.
After graduating from high school in Glasgow in 1938, Perry joined the Army and proudly served his country during WWII in the South Pacific where he was a Lieutenant in the 163rd infantry regiment of the 41st Division stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.
In 1940 Perry married
Nita Wood, also of Glasgow. When WWII ended, they made their home in Great Falls where they lived for over 20 years. Perry and Nita were later divorced. In the late 1940s, after attending the College of Great Falls, Perry joined the Air National Guard and was a career officer stationed at Gore Field in Great Falls until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 1967.
Perry married
Edith Quick in 1967. They lived in Lincoln, Billings and Helena until moving to Sequim and Bellingham, Wash., where they enjoyed retirement until Edith's death in 1991. In 1991 Perry returned to Montana, settling in Missoula where he lived very happily at the Missoula Manor Retirement Home where he had many friends. For the past two years he had resided in Salt Lake City.
In addition to his second wife, Edie, Perry was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Judy and two brothers, Al and Lorenzo.
Perry is survived by his former wife Nita and their three daughters, Janet Adair and husband, Paul, of Northport, N.Y., Joyce Lewis and husband, Bill, of Missoula, and Judy Cosgrove and husband, Butch, of Salt Lake City. Survivors also include five grandchildren, Peri Roeme, Paul Adair, Danielle Lewis and Matt and Amber Cosgrove; three great-grandchildren, Cassie, Patrick and Victoria; his brother, Bob and family of Glasgow; sister-in-law, Phyllis, of Helena, and several nieces and nephews and their families. Four stepchildren, Priscilla Robinson and son, Douglas of Helena, Terry Quick and his family of Lynnwood, Wash., and Bob and Gordon Quick, also survive Perry.
A celebration of Perry's life will be held this summer at the Missoula Manor in Missoula. Memorials may be sent to the Missoula Manor Endowment Fund, 909 W. Central, Missoula, MT or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Our Dad was a wonderful, caring Dad. He showered his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren with his unconditional love. We will all miss him very much.
