Kathryn A. Rust
GLENDIVE –Kathryn A. Rust, age 86, of Glendive, died on Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive.
Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive. Rite of Committal will be in the Dawson County cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Kathryn was born on March 31, 1914, in Mandan, N.D., the 12th of 14 children born to Frederick and Anna Mary (Stockey) Froelich. She was raised and educated in the Mandan area. Kathryn moved to Montana in her mid 20s and had been a resident of Glendive since that time. She married
Harold Rust in 1943 and he preceded her in death in 1985.
Kathryn was an accomplished bridge player, loved to read and thoroughly enjoyed her family. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Jerry) Cook of Glendive and Shirley Farrell of Billings, Mont.; one son, Tom (Kim) Rust of Green River, Wyo.; one brother, Tony (Rose) Froelich of Mandan, N.D.; eight grandchildren, Suzi (Jon) Smith, Erin (Rob) Zimmerman, Anne Farrell, Fred Denning, Brenna Denning, Ty Denning, Stacie (Mark) Smith and Richard Rust; six great-grandchildren, Cameron Smith, Aaron Smith, Ian Smith, Alison Zimmerman, Jordan Denning and Casey Smith; and her special nieces, Rosaline Doll and Jeanette Stebbins.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and seven sisters. Memorials are suggested to the Glendive Senior Citizen’s Center, 323 E. Barry, Glendive, MT 59330.
Marilyn L. Quigley
SHAWMUT – Marilyn L. Quigley, 71, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Wheatland Memorial Hospital in Harlowton of natural causes.
At her request, no memorial is planned. Cremation will take place at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Edgar Allen Mogen
BURLINGTON, Wyo. – Edgar Allen Mogen, 54, died at his home on Monday, May 1, 2000.
Memorial funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, at the Burlington LDS Church. Burial of cremains will take place at Froid, Mont., at a later date. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. is in charge.
John Whitman
WEST YELLOWSTONE – John Holly Whitman, 88, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2000, of natural causes.
Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Community Protestant Church in West Yellowstone. Interment of ashes will follow in Fir Ridge cemetery.
Calvin O. Evans
ABSAROKEE – Calvin O. Evans, 91, of Absarokee, died peacefully May 7, 2000, at home. He was born Feb. 23, 1909 at the town of Oil Center, Kern County, Calif., the son of Charles and Netta Evans.
He married
Louise Bower and they had two children, Gerald and William.
Cal was employed at Patton State Hospital as a butcher and also a fireman. He served four years in the U. S. Navy during W.W.II. He was honorably discharged and then received a teaching degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He worked as a meat cutting instructor at Deuel Vocational Prison at Tracy, Calf., until he retired.
Cal was a charter member of C.S.E.A. For the past twenty-four years Cal and Louise resided in Absarokee, enjoying retirement. Cal was a board member at the Senior Citizen Center in Absarokee and also belonged to the Absarokee Lions Club. For nineteen years he hand delivered American. Flags to first grade classes within Stillwater County, which was a Lions Club project. He was so proud of this project and he looked forward to it each year. He gave five of his great grandchildren their flags
Cal was preceded in death by his wife Louise, they were married
69 years. Cal is survived by two sans, Jerry (Edie) of Henderson, Nev., and Bill (Barbara) of Absarokee; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and memorials are suggested to Absarokee Ambulance or Absarokee Swimming Pool.
Smith Funeral Chapel-Columbus was in charge of cremation. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Beverly Mary Bowman
Beverly Mary Bowman went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 6, 2000, after a brief but hard fought battle with cancer. Bev was born on Aug. 20, 1934 in East Providence, R.I. to Manuel and Mary Rezendes.
In May 1960, she married
Jerome Bowman and moved to his home state of Montana. Bev and Jerome later divorced. Their first son was born in March 1961, followed soon after by another son in May 1962, and a third son in Jan. 1964. Her children were very important to her and much of her time was devoted to baseball practice, Boy Scout meetings and swim meets. At the time of her death, Bev was employed at MSU-B as a campus operator, a position she had held for over 20 years. In addition to her full time job at the college, she worked 25 years in the emergency room at St. Vincent Hospital until her retirement in Dec. 1999.
Bev was an avid angler, and on many spring and summer days could be found dropping a line in the lakes around Red Lodge. She also enjoyed the horse races, sorking in her yard and garden and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her brother, Daniel (Abby) Rezendes of Orlando, Fla.; sons: Dave (Rose) of Billings; Mike (Cyndi) of Laurel and Thomas of Lester, Pa; much loved grandchildren: David, Lindsay, Kendra, Jessica, Tawna, Micki, and Cade. Also surviving, a friend Lacee Perry and many extended family members in New England and beyond. She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Smith Downtown Chapel with a funeral mass held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 501 Custer Ave. Rite of committal will be held at the Red Lodge cemetery. Viewing will be Thursday from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. at Smith Downtown chapel.
Memorials may be sent to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Arnold Theodore ‘Slug’ Obermueller
VERNAL, Utah – Arnold Theodore Obermueller, “Slug” age 79, passed away May 6, 2000, at Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt, Utah. He was born July 8, 1920, in Lincoln, Kan. A son of August and Bertha Hoyer Obermueller. He worked in the oil fields and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is a lifetime member of VFW and Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Slug enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.
He is survived by a daughter and two sons: Caroll L. Mahoney of Kodiak, Alaska, Rick (Deborah) Obermueller of Harrisville, Utah, and Craig (Dianna) Obermueller of Jensen, Utah; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother, Nobert (Alice) Obermueller of San Jose, Calif., Elmer (Marilyn) Obermueller of Wichita, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Hal and Keith; two brothers, Gerheart and Paul Obermueller.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour Lutheran Church with Pastor Roger Sterle conducting. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary before going to the Church for services. Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park with military honors from the American Legion. Under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
Charlotte Bennett Smith
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Charlotte Bennett Smith was born in Centralia, Ill., Feb. 5, 1916, to Anna and John Bennett. Charlotte attended school in Centralia where she had many friends and excelled in music, playing piano for the church choir. She married
Fred Read Smith on Dec. 16, 1939, and moved with him to Montana in 1946 living in Great Falls and Billings.
Charlotte’s life in Billings was very active. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church as well as many years of volunteering at St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Alberta Bair Theatre She worked for the Billings School District, Roxanne’s Gift Shop and Gainan’s Floral. Charlotte enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing bridge with both her husband and many friends. Her passion was gardening, decorating her home, and being with her family and friends.
Charlotte Smith died Friday May 6, 2000 in Phoenix, Ariz., after a long and wonderful life. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, W. Ken and Susan Smith of Tulsa Okla., son and daughter-in-law, Ron R. and Gail Smith; grandchildren, Casee Smith Chavez, Dan Smith, Megan Charles of Phoenix, Ariz., Jennifer Smith of Tulsa, Okla.; niece, Mrs. Marietta Johnson of Red Lodge, Mont.; and nephew Dick Smith of Billings, Mont.
Memorial service will be Wednesday, May 10, at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church in Phoenix. Family suggests memorials be made to St. Vincent’s Hospital Volunteers and Big Sky Hospice.

Harold R. Ruff
Harold R. Ruff, of 820 Arlington Drive, Billings, passed away March 3, 2000, at Ft. Harrison of cancer. Cremation has taken place. No services requested.
Harold was in the Marines during WWII and participated in the defense of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and capture of Pelelue Island.
Survivors are his wife, Alice of Billings; brother, Jake Ruff Jr. of Billings; two sisters, Agnes O’Connor of Olympia, Wash., and Dorothy Payne of Spokane, Wash.
Burial service is pending.
Neil A. McJunkin
At the age of 73, Neil A. McJunkin passed away at his home May 5, 2000. Neil was born in Miles City on May 14, 1926, the son of Donovan and Gladys McJunkin. He was the fourth of 11 children. In December of 1944 he was called to active duty where he served in the Navy on the USS Nevada. On June 10, 1950, Neil was united in marriage to Mary (Sunny) Henderson. They have two daughters and one son: Jeri (Pete) Peterson of Vancouver, Wash.; Doug (Rhonda) McJunkin of Concrete, Wash.; and Jackie (Rick) Jacobson of Billings. Also surviving are four grandsons: Chad (Kirsti) Peterson, Kris Peterson, Eric McJunkin and Chase Stroud. Four granddaughters: Dani (Shila) Magee, Mandy (Eric) Warner, Jami McJunkin and Coley Jo Stroud, and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers: Keith (Shirley) McJunkin and Dennis McJunkin; and four sisters: Audrey Sweeny, Colleen (Bob) Harmann, Donna (Jim) Van-Veckhoven, and Karen (Jim) Fulford. Neil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arlyn and Kaye McJunkin; and sisters, Nada Watts and Velda Brummitt.
Neil farmed and later retired from the Great Western Sugar factory. He enjoyed family dinners and loved playing horseshoes with family and friends. He loved working with his hands repairing anything that was broken and building things out of wood for his family.
Grandpa’s happiest moments were with family and friends. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. No words can express how much he will be missed.
A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Terrace Gardens cemetery. Viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday at Smith West Chapel; 304 34th St. West. The casket will be closed at the church.
James Layne Duncan
A proud native of the Big Sky country, born and raised in Two Dot, Mont. Our beloved husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all he met left this world on May 7, 2000, to enter the great kingdom in the sky. His courageous 20-year battle with emphysema is finally over. It is a sad time for his family and friends but a peaceful time for him to finally be at home in heaven with his dad, his dog, Gringo, and his eternal father.
Dad was born at Two Dot and attended school in Harlowton. He was a great athlete excelling in football. After graduation, he joined the Navy and was stationed in the Philippines during the Korean War. He was very proud to serve his country and be a veteran of foreign wars.
He met the love of his life while stationed in Texas through his Navy buddy and future brother-in-law. Mom and Dad were married
in Corpus Christi, Texas, on July 1, 1955. They returned to Montana and made their home on the family ranch five miles west of Harlowton. Three sons were conceived in the next four years. Dad was not only a rancher, but a brakeman on the Milwaukee Railroad for 30 years. He loved to ride the tracks and later to collect railroad memorabilia. In 1970, he moved the family to Three Forks where they lived for 23 years, continuing to work on the Milwaukee. As his health began to fail, he and Mom moved to Billings to be closer to family. He spent countless hours building toys from wood and rocks to give the grandchildren and friends.
James is survived by Norma, his wife of 44 years, 10 months. Her dedication, devotion, and love for Dad was as true as the sky is blue. James is also survived by his mother, Myrtle of Billings; three sons, Bob (Rhonda) Duncan of Rathdrum, Idaho, Bill (Kaye) Duncan of Sheridan, Wyo., and Don Duncan of Red Lodge; two sister, Barb (Jim) Corcoran of Billings and Delores Willems of Billings; one brother, Bud Duncan of Billings; six grandchildren whom he adored, Aaron Duncan stationed in the Navy at Pensacola, Fla., Adam Duncan of Sheridan, Wyo., Cory and Kara Duncan of Three Forks and Cassie and Marissa Duncan of Rathdrum, Idaho; mother-in-law, Mozell Hacker of Shingle Springs, Calif.; brother-in-laws, Duane (Coryene) Gwaltney of Redding, Calif., and Don (Carol) Gwaltney of Okatie, S.C.; sister-in-law, Barbara Noble of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews and lifetime friends.
You were our provider, you were our protector, you were our hope, you were our life. Most of all, you were our friend. The final chapter on Earth is complete. Another book from heaven is about to be written.
At Dad’s request, he has been cremated. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Fort Harrison VA cemetery in Helena where he will be laid to rest. Cremation by Cremation or Funeral Gallery. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice of Billings or the Beartooth Nature Center in Red Lodge.

Elsie K. Kahler Kindsfater
Elsie K. Kahler Kindsfater went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 7, 2000. She was born on Sept. 9, 1928, to Henry and Katie Lenhardt in Billings. She attended Eldergrove and Senior High School.
She was united in marriage with Harold L. Kahler on Feb. 9, 1947. Harold passed away on June 17, 1984. On Dec. 22, 1989, she married
Richard Kindsfater. Elsie worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. most of her adult life. She then retired to Red Lodge, where she built the home she had always dreamed of. There was a lot of fishing, camping, and family get-togethers during the years of raising three children. Elsie loved to dance to her native German music, especially “The Polka”. After Elsie and Richard were married
, she convinced him to take dancing lessons. She and Richard did a lot of traveling, joining the “snow bird” population during the winter. Elsie was an active member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Eagles, and Elks Lodges. Dance in Heaven, Mom, we will love and miss you always.
Elsie is survived by her husband, Richard; her daughter, Melvina (John) Sheard; her son, Jerry (Patsy) Kahler; her daughter-in-law, Raylene Kahler; her stepson, Pat (Penny) Kindsfater; her grandchildren, Nadine (Tim) Scoville, Todd (Heidi) Peterson, Amy, Christy, Brad, Derek, David, and Leslie Kahler; her brothers, Richard (Dorris) Lenhardt, Fred (Helen) Lenhardt, and Clarence Lenhardt; her step-grandchildren, Megan Kindsfater, Mike (Traci) Sheard and Susan Sheard; and four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Megan, Skyler, and Samantha. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Larry Kahler, her brother, Adolph and his wife, Lucille Lenhardt, and brother, Leo Lenhardt.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Mount Olive Lutheran Church, the American Diabetes Association, or the charity of one’s choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
Umi (Sato) Hayashi
Umi (Sato) Hayashi, age 86, died peacefully on May 7, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital. She was born on Aug. 16, 1913, in Seattle, Wash., to Kijiro Sakahashi and Matsu Sato. She was the third child of seven children. She worked as a maid and retired from the Northern Hotel after 35 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to cook for her family and spend time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sisters, Tomiko Amemiya and Hisako Tashiro, both from Chicago. She has four children, Mitch (Sue Sanchez) Hayashi, Terry (Butch) Salazar, George (Jackie) Hayashi and Mary (Jerry) Turner. She has ten grandchildren, Judy (Bill) Bales, Michael (Lela) Hayashi, Mark Hayashi, Harold (Wendy) Turner, Kathy (Randy) Sipe, Charles Turner, Karrie Madill, Jerry (Juanita) Hayashi, Nicholas Hayashi and Christopher Hayashi. She has six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, her grandson, Paul Salazar and granddaughters, Michelle and Daphne Hayashi.
Her viewing will be on Tuesday, May 9, from 2-5 p.m. at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 29 8th St. W., and her funeral will be on May 10, at 1 p.m. at Cremation or Funeral Gallery. Her burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Ann (Stanton) Leader
Ann (Stanton) Leader, age 82, died Friday, May 5, 2000, at Saint Vincent’s Hospital. Ann was born May 20, 1917, in Ballantine, Mont., the youngest of eight children born to Joseph and Francis Dvorak.
She was raised in Corinth, Mont., where she attended a one-room school. Ann graduated from Huntley Project High School in 1935. On April 17, 1941, she married
Clarence A. Stanton in Worden, Mont., and to this union three children were born. Clarence died in March of 1961. Ann married
Orville Leader in June of 1965. Orv passed away in 1993.
In Ann’s younger years, she worked at Bateman & Bollinger General Merchandise in Worden. Later, she and Clarence owned and operated the Stanton Lumber Company in Huntley. Graduation from LPN school in 1973 was one of Ann’s proudest achievements. Accomplishments benefiting her neighborhood included organizing a Neighborhood Watch program, getting the roads paved, and establishing mailbox delivery. She was also instrumental in the organization of the Huntley Senior Citizens.
Ann and Clarence enjoyed many special times square dancing. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, and fishing. The wonderful kolaches she baked will be missed. Ann was past president of the Rebekah Ameca Lodge No. 126 and was a member of the Huntley Senior Citizens, United Methodist Women, and the Monday card group. She was preceded in death by Clarence and Orville, her parents, four brothers, three sisters, one grandson, and her special cat, Smokey.
Survivors include her son, Gary (Darlene) of Salt Lake City; daughters, Linda (Doug) Buckingham and Susan (George) Radovich of Billings; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with another expected in August.
Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Tuesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Huntley United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Mountview cemetery in Billings. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Huntley United Methodist Church, the Mental Health Foundation, P.O. Box 219, Billings, MT 59103, or a charity of one’s choice.
