Edward Hohn Holden
Edward John Holden, 78 years old, died May 11, 2000, in Billings after an extended illness. Born in Butte, Ed lived in Billings most of his life, graduating from Billings High in 1939 and attending the Butte School of Mines.
Ed married
Martha McLaughlin in San Francisco during World War II while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. They were married
57 years until Martha preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1999. Ed retired from the Billings City Water Department after more than 35 years of service. In his retirement, he joined the Elks Lodge.
Ed is survived by his four married
daughters, Kay (John) Allen of Blaine, Wash., Pat (Charles) Burhan of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Jo (Leonard) Harkless of Billings, and Janet (Mat) Cassel of Salt Lake City, Utah; his brother, Harold of Billings; and six grandchildren, Andrew and Lyndsey (Jo), and David, Alexandra, Madeliene, and Samuel (Janet).
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 15 at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. A Vigil Service will be held 7 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. The casket will be closed for the Vigil Service. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church with Rite of Committal in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Pius X Church, l8th St. West and Broadwater Ave., Billings, MT 59102.
Mary Ellen Issac
COEUR d’ALENE – Mary Ellen Issac, age 64 of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2000, in DeBorgia, Mont., of heart failure. She was born June 4, 1935, in Veblen, S.D., a daughter of Charles and Clara Green. Mary was raised in Seattle and married
Herb Jenks in 1952. In 1969, she married
Joe Isaac, and the couple lived in Absarokee, Mont., for a number of years. She then moved to DeBorgia, Mont., and after her friend and companion, Andy Anderson, passed away on May 14, 1999, she moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she lived until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters and is now survived by her children, Mike Jenks of Denver, Colo., Steve Jenks of Seoul, Korea, Cheryl Blankenship of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Jay and Jerry Jenks of Algona, Wash.; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews; one brother, LeRoy Green of Blaine, Wash., and one sister, Eldora Blaze of Mercer, Pa.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 13, at the DeBorgia School House at 2 p.m. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction and care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
Gary E. Kallem
LAUREL – Gary E. Kallem, 56, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on May 10, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer. Gary always said he had cancer but cancer did not have him.
Gary was born in Glasgow, raised in Broadview and settled with his family in the Laurel/Billings area. Gary was employed by the Cenex Pipeline for 28 years before retiring in 1998. Gary dedicated the last 16 years of his life to the Lord by sharing the gospel message to everyone with whom he came in contact. Gary will continue to touch the lives of others through his dedication to the Lord through Abba’s Haven, a church camp Gary and his wife Priscilla donated to New Life Church, that is currently under construction. Gary served as elder and board member for the past three years. It was Gary’s dream that the camp would be a place of rest and communion with the Lord.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife of almost 16 years, Priscilla; his children, Kevin and Nancy Kallem of Laurel, Kari and Eric Grider, Ken and Christine Kallem, all of Billings, Lori and Dennis Degele of Laurel, Lana Palmer of Park City, and Lynette and Kurt Rheaume of Billings; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Drew, Eric, Nicholas, Kayla, Zackary, Kyle, Brandon, Rebecca, Matthew, Shelby and Ryan; his brother, Bob Kallem and his wife, Denise of Joliet his sister, Janice and husband, Ron Popelka of Acton, and sister-in-law, Mabel Kallem of Billings; and several nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Helga Kallem, brother, Russell Kallem and sister, Marlene Degele.
Services will be held at New Life Church on Monday, May 15, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Laurel cemetery. Memorials can be sent to Abba’s Haven c/o New Life Church, 3950 Temple Place, Billings, MT 59102. Visitation will be Sunday, 5-9 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel.
Kathryn ‘Kat’ Kuhl
Kathryn “Kat” Kuhl celebrated 84 years of life and passed peacefully on to heaven due to natural causes on May 10 at St. Vincent Hospital.
She was born Nov 4, 1915, in the family home as the second child of 10 to James and Lucille Denton of Billings. Kat graduated from Roberts High School in 1935 and went on to complete a degree in education at Eastern Montana Normal School (MSU-B).
After teaching two years at the Country School, a one-room school house in Luther she met and married
Allen “Allie” Kuhl of Luther on June 7, 1940. Allie and Kat, as they were known to their friends, made their home and raised their family and a good number of extended family in Billings.
Kat, perhaps even better known as Mom or Gram, opened her heart and traditional family home to so many. From the displaced brother returning from WWII to a host of related children in need of a loving solace. Kat, the teacher and mother, was there for them, her love unconditional and infinite.
Kat, too, was an avid sports fan. She loyally followed the Billings Mustangs since their inception, rooted for the Billings Senior Broncs in football and basketball, supported the San Francisco 49ers in professional football, and Utah Jazz in professional basketball. She recalled often and fondly her own athletic past as a scoring forward on the girls high school basketball team at Roberts. She wore number 2.
When Kat, Gram, Mom, wasn’t doting on her house guests or watching a ballgame, she enjoyed gardening, growing pansies and roses, playing a lively game of cards, making quilts, and concocting tasty homemade candies. Especially the almond roca!
Allie, her partner of 35 years, preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1975.
Kat’s survivors include her children, daughter, Karen Durfey (Curt), of Billings, her son, James Kuhl of Billings; grandson, Dennis FitzGerald of Tarzana, Calif.; granddaughter, Kathy Terry (Rob) of Billings and spoiled cat, Baxter of the family home.
Surviving siblings include sisters, Mary Reynolds of Napa, Calif., and Helen Denton of Casa Grande, Ariz.; brothers, Joe Denton of Billings, Bill Denton of Thayne, Wyo., Patrick Denton of Portland, Ore., and Albert Denton of Studio City, Calif. Kat’s sisters, Evelyn and Patsy and brother, Chuck preceded her in death.
Visitation will begin 9:30 a.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. Services will be held at the First Congregational Church, UCC, in Billings on Tuesday, May 16, at 2 p.m. with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be sent to the local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation or the First Congregational Church, UCC.

Alex Manweiler
Alex Manweiler, 83, of Joliet, passed away Thursday evening, May 11, 2000, in Bearthooth Hospital & Health Center in Red Lodge.
Born on March 29, 1917, in Laurel, he was one of 10 children born to Andrew and Catherine Manweiler.
He married
his loving wife, Rosie Heimbichner on Dec. 13, 1936, in Billings, and they began their married
life on a farm at Shepherd. They lived in Billings and Silesia, and in 1944 settled in the Cow Creek area near Boyd where he farmed with the John Deere tractors he dearly loved.
Alex was a member of the Joliet Lutheran Church and had served for many years on the Boyd and Victory school boards.
Survivors include his wife, Rosie Manweiler; two sons, Bob Manweiler of Mont Aqua, and Mike (Judy) Manweiler of Boyd; one daughter, Judy (Cruz) Almonza of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; four sisters, Molly Bechtold, Pauline Sekora, and Lillian Schaeffer, all of Billings, and Freida Gilmore of Powell, Wyo.; three brothers, Carl of Laurel, Henry of Powell, and Bill of Rockvale; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was dearly loved and will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13 (today) in Joliet Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Joliet cemetery with the Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Beartooth Hospital & Health Center in Red Lodge, or to the Joliet Lutheran Church.
Minnie C. Stobaugh
HARDIN – Minnie C. Stobaugh, 90, loving mother, went to be with Jesus our Lord, Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct.17, 1909, in St. Anthony, N.D., a daughter of Stephen and Bertha Schaff Yockim. She received her early education in Fairview and graduated from Fairview High School in 1920. She continued her education at the Billings Normal School, receiving her lifetime teaching certificate. She taught school at several Montana Hi-line schools, Community, Decker and Hardin schools. In 1950, she received her bachelor of science degree and at the age of 62 she received her master’s in education from Eastern Montana College.
Minnie taught school until retiring in 1972. After her retirement, she assisted the county library with its reading program for adults. She received the Literacy Reading Award in 1992 from the Big Horn County Reading Council.
Minnie married
Charles Stobaugh on June 1, 1940, in Hardin, and the couple made their home in Hardin. Mr. Stobaugh died in 1961.
She was a member of ADK, a teacher honorary society, a past worthy matron of the Hardin Chapter No. 65 Order of Eastern Star and was a life member of the Montana Education Association as well as the National Education Association
Minnie enjoyed bowling, gardening, reading and sewing.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Johnson of Forsyth and Nadine Stobaugh of California; two sons, William of Hardin and Reuben of Missoula; one sister, Angeline (John) Mrachek of North Dakota; two brothers, Thomas (Marie) Yockim and Joe (Adaline) Yackim of North Dakota; six grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and three great- great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment with Eastern Star Graveside rites will follow in the Fairview cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the BHCo. Library or the Shriner’s Transportation Fund.
Walter John Sund
BUTTE – Walter John Sund, 83, died May 4, 2000, at St. James Community Hospital.
Survivors include a niece, Diane Foley of Billings; a great niece, Astrid Foley Northrup of Powell, Wyo., and three great-great nephews, Patrick, Michael and Benjamin Northrup, all of Powell.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held May 8 at Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home.
Darrel Jay Vialpando
Darrel Jay Vialpando, 43, of Billings, was a murder victim in Washington state on May 9, 2000.
Darrel was born June 21, 1956, to Don and Miriam in Thermopolis, Wyo.
Darrel worked in construction in and around the Billings area for Local 98 in his early years, later joining Painters Local 1922 working in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and various other states. Darrel enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and spending time with his sons.
Darrel is survived by his mother, Miriam Vialpando; twin sister, Carol (Ken) Thornton; sister, Donna French; four sons, Clay Forni, 23, of Sheridan, Wyo., Daniel, 17, Travis, 12, Taustin, 8, and former wife Kari, all of Whitefish; three nephews, Vance, Barry, Quentin; two great-nieces, Brooklyn and Alysia; one great-nephew, Aaron, all of Billings; and very special friends, Gene and Carla Coon of Idaho.
We all love you, Darrel, and will miss you and your stories about your travels and things you saw. May God bless you and keep you in your travel home to heaven.
Memorial service will be at a later date.
Shawn Bauwens
At the young age of 27, Shawn Bauwens died peacefully at his home in Fromberg, surrounded by his family and friends. Shawn died early Thursday morning, May 11, 2000. Shawn was born the son of Albert C. and Evelyn L. (Frank) Bauwens in Billings, on June 1, 1972. He graduated from Fromberg High School in 1990 and attended Montana State University in Bozeman and graduated at MSU-Billings with a degree in management and marketing.
Shawn worked for UPS and most recently for FedEx Ground. He took great pride in his hard work. Just recently, in recognition of his dedication, Shawn received the Best Sort Manager Award. It is an accomplishment that made him very proud. Golfing, motor cross and working out at the gym were some of his favorite hobbies, but he loved working on the family farm. Recently, Shawn moved back to Fromberg from Vancouver, Wash., to spend time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his mother, Evelyn; sister, Julie (Mike) Jones, their children, Walt, Kandee, Carl and Lindsey; brothers, Scott (Deb) Bauwens, their children, Marcie, Janice and Kristen; Kim (Ede) Bauwens, son, Trent; Randy (Megan) Bauwens, son, Tyson and his dear friend, Anita Larson and son, Chris.
Shawn has joined in heaven his father, Albert and brother, Alan. Your family and friends will miss you "Hopper.
A Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Friday, May 12, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fromberg. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Fromberg Gymnasium with interment in the Rockvale cemetery. Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings is in charge of arrangements. Gracie Jo Shannon Regan
MILES CITY – Gracie Jo Shannon Regan, infant daughter of Timothy E. and Karie Jo Regan was born still on May 9, 2000. Gracie Jo is survived by her parents, her brothers, Timmy and Matthew, and her sisters, Collette and Emily Jo. Survivors also include her grandparents, Bob and Barboura Jo Shannon of Bend, Ore., Ed and Margaret Regan of Miles City, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Although we held Gracie for just a short time, she is deeply loved and will forever be in our hearts. Please watch over us, our Baby Angel.
Private family services were held Wednesday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment followed Thursday in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City was in charge of the arrangements.
Gordon Morrison
LAUREL – Funeral services for Gordon Morrison, of Laurel, formerly of Sidney, will be Saturday, May 13, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Sidney, with Pastor Kent Stenzel officiating. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery with military honors under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Gordon H. Morrison was horn Jan. 10, 1919, to Hugh and Anna (Jorgensen) Morrison. Gordon attended Andes and Sidney schools and continued his education by attending Diesel Mechanics and Body and Fender School in Fargo, N.D. In 1940, he joined the Air Force and was in active duty in Africa. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
On June 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Susie Marie Libby in Sidney. They had two children, Gordon and Inez.
Gordon worked for Thogersen Motors and Gem City, until he started his own body shop in 1975, which he owned and operated until he retired in 1983.
Gordon loved the outdoors, fishing and enjoyed taking drives out in the country enjoying God’s beautiful creations. His other big love was his car and pickup. He always kept them looking like they belonged in a show room, polishing them almost every day.
In 1991, Gordon married
Frankie (Smelser) Evanson and moved to Laurel in 1997. Gordon and Frankie spent the last few years traveling, visiting friends and family.
Gordon died Wednesday morning, May 10, 2000, at the Deaconess Medical Center in Billings.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Frankie, Laurel; son, Gordon Lee (Rita) Morrison of Prattville, Ala.; daughter, Inez Van Essen of Denver; a stepson, Tim Evanson of Helena; stepdaughters, Linda Pearson and Ann Marie Baker, both of Missoula; brother, Ivan (Beverly) Peterson, of Sidney; sister, Alice Lowman of Boise, Idaho; six grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sue; three sisters; and two brothers.
Memorials maybe sent to the Mon-Dak Heritage Center, Sidney.
