James Daniel ‘J.D.’ Romine
HYSHAM – James Daniel “J.D.” Romine, 92, Hysham, died Sunday May 14, 2000, at Rosebud Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Interment will follow at a later date.
Vivian E. Larson
SIDNEY – Vivian E. Larson, 79, passed away at her home, Sunday May 14, 2000.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, at the People’s Congregational Church, with Pastor Perry Blanchard officiating. Interment will be in the Sidney cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Frank Rucki
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Frank Rucki, 94, died on Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the VA Medical Center.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at Kane Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.
Ida T. Sherrodd
POMPEYS PILLAR – Ida T. Sherrodd, 86, of Pompeys Pillar, Mont., passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Eagle Cliff Manor.
She was born Dec. 17, 1913, in Nickerson, Kan., the daughter Aaron and Louie Phillips. At the age of 5 her family moved to the Castle Butte and Pineview area, north of Pompeys Pillar. She attended rural schools north of Pompeys and at the Anita School on the Highline.
On Sept. 23, 1931, she married
Cleo A. Sherrodd, and since 1932 they made their home on a farm at Pompeys Pillar.
Ida wrote music, poetry and was a composer. She was a well-known soprano and her family had a dance band in which she played six different instruments. The piano was her main instrument. She also was a talented painter, be it watercolor or acrylics and a member of the Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Leo (Charlotte) Sherrodd of Gillette, Wyo., Gary (Patty) Sherrodd of Pompeys Pillar, Larry (Judy) Sherrodd of Worden, and Gale (Joan) Sherrodd of La Mirada, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren; a sister, Lenora “Sammie” Schnell of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Elmer “Bud” (Edith) Phelps of Castle Rock, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 19, at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Interment will follow at Pleasantview cemetery in Ballantine. Memorials are suggested to the Valley Baptist Church, Huntley, MT 59037.
John A. Brooks
LEWISTOWN – John A. Brooks, 86, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge.
Helene Karson
LIVINGSTON – Helene Karson, 80, did at her home on Sunday, May 14, 2000, after an extended illness.
Cremation has taken place at Franzen-Davis Crematory in Livingston. Family graveside services and interment of the cremains will take place at a later date.
Herschel Damon Scott
GREYBULL, Wyo. – Herschel Damon Scott, 78, died on Sunday, May 14, 2000.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Greybull Elks Lodge No. 1431 on Wednesday, May 17. Atwood Family Funeral Directors, Inc. is in charge.
Velda Lee Birdsley
LOVELL, Wyo. – Velda Lee Birdsley was born June 7, 1932, in Lovell to Artie and Hyrum Johnson. On Saturday, May 13, 2000, our wife, mother, and grandmother went home to her father in heaven. She was married
to Dale Birdsley on March 20, 1947, in Red Lodge. They were blessed with eight children: Gale Wright of Lovell, Sharon Olson (Jeff) of Lovell, MaryAnn Grall (Bill) of New Mexico, Butch-Dale Birdsley Jr. (Janette) of Riverton, Richard Birdsley of Cowely, Connie Boyce (Mel) of Gillette, Roger Birdsley (Becky) of Cowley, Georgia Leichner (Doug) of Powell. She had 33 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She had lots of nieces and nephews. Her family was the greatest joy in her lift. She was truly a servant to others. Her service started at the age of the age of 10 when she lost her father. She rook care of some of her siblings and many of her nieces and nephews. She never stopped raising children right up until her life’s end. She also served many elderly people in the community. There was no one she would turn away. She also held many callings in the church. She had many great experiences in her service to others. She held a special place in her heart for all of us. She will be greatly missed by all who ever knew her. She was a beautiful person and they are rejoicing on the other side at her return. She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, in the LDS Church in Cowley, Wyo. Burial at Lovell cemetery following services.
Jane Parker Ainslie
Jane Parker Ainslie died May 15, 2000, in Billings. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edward A. Parker Jr., she was born March 23, 1926, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Jane graduated from Friends Central in 1943 and Edgewood Park College in 1946. As a teenager, she enjoyed and taught horseback riding at summer camp. On Aug. 28, 1948, she married
C. Donn Ainslie, and they enjoyed nearly 52 years of marriage.
Over the years, Jane was a Den Mother and proud mother of three Eagle Scouts. She enjoyed sailing, golf, and playing bridge with her husband Donn and never missed an opportunity to visit with friends and family. She enjoyed a restaurant meal with her sons and their families and was a wonderful mother and mother-in-law. Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Dr. Edward A. (Bill) Parker III.
She is survived by her husband C. Donn Ainslie of Billings; and her sons and their families, Bruce C. Ainslie (Sally, Aubrey, and Greg) of Charlotte, N.C., Scott S. Ainslie (Jesse and Gabe) of Durham, N.C., and George F. Ainslie (Charlotte, Heather, Miranda, and Kit) of Lavina, Mont.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at Grace United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Greater Billings Chapter, Box 35200, Billings, MT 59107. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
Gilbert Carpenter
CROW AGENCY – Gilbert Carpenter, 65, of Crow Agency, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in the Awe Kualawaache Care Center in Crow Agency, following an extended illness.
He was born June 16, 1934, in Crow Agency, a son of Joseph Carpenter and Belinda Eagle LaForge. He received his education in Busby. During his younger years, he trained horses and participated in rodeos and Pow-wows. He worked for the Campbell Farming Corporation and the Holly Sugar Corporation.
Gilbert was a member of the Piegan Clan and a child of the Greasy Mouth Clan. He was well-known for his sense of humor.
During the last few years, he resided in the Crow Nursing Home. He took great pride in assuming the responsibility of raising and lowering the flag each day at the nursing home.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Louise LaForge of Crow Agency and Josephine (Harold) Brien of Lodge Grass; six adopted sisters, Alice Tobacco of Hardin, Laura He Does It of Ft. Smith, Darlene (Mervin) Eastman, Elvira (Art) Alden, Alma Cashen, Nellie Bad Bear, Janice Bad Bear and Carol (Vernon) Whiteclay of Crow Agency; three adopted brothers, Thomas (Shirley) Bad Bear, Byron Bad Bear and Clayton (Daisy) Bad Bear of Crow Agency; three special nephews, Clinton LaForge, Carl (Shannon) Alden and Carl Eastman; his paternal relatives, Calvin (Melvine) Jefferson and Judith (Delbert) Big Lake of Lodge Grass; and member of the Hunts the Arrow, Sees the Ground, Jefferson, Alden, Eastman, LaForge, Grant and Carpenter families.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Crow Agency cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Charlotte Giesick Dean
Charlotte was born Nov. 20, 1903, and died on May 14, 2000. She was one of nine daughters and one son born to Elizabeth and John Giesick. Charlotte married
Ralph Garlock with whom she had one child, Ronald. Ronald died at age three. She was married
to Paul Dean on 1950. He preceded her in death.
Charlotte is survived by one sister, Marie Gardner, Los Angeles; and her sister-in-law, Wilma Giesick of Billings. Surviving nieces and nephews include Elaine Siefert, Bennet, Neb.; Elsie Urban, Esther Tayler, Lucille Bateman and Jean Dare, Lincoln, Neb.; Stan Marsh, Hemet, Calif.; Rodney Richardson, Denver, Colo.; Gary Giesick, Knoxville, Tenn.; Marion Tinnes, Baker, Mont.; Glenna Giesick, Oregon City, Ore.; and Linda Price of Billings, who was the light of her life. Linda’s tender, loving care made every day more pleasant for her for many years.
She is well-remembered by her grand-nieces and -nephews: Tom Price, Bill Price, Michelle Price, Harvey Tinnes Jr., Paul Tinnes, Nancy Tinnes, Rawlin Richardson, Brenna Richardson, and the neighborhood kids, Wade Lundin, Matt Lundin, and Thea Lundin. She taught them all “to color in the lines, ” and to tie their shoes. Her home was also the place for all the kids to dye Easter eggs. And she made them wear their coats!
Charlotte worked at Penney’s and Gregory’s Dress Shop. She was a member of Billings Friendship Chapter No. 124, Order of the Eastern Star.
We’re sure she and Elmer are sitting together on the steps, with their elbows on their knees, smoking cigarettes and talking about farming.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist with interment in Mountview cemetery.
May Tihista
May Tihista, 95, died Friday, May 5, 2000, of natural causes in Valley View Home in Glasgow.
She was born Dec. 13, 1904, in Banca, France, the youngest of the six children of John and Gracianne Sallaberry.
She was educated by nuns at the local Catholic school, but she had to leave school in the fifth grade at the beginning of “the Great War.”
She married
Peter Tihista April 29, 1926. They came to Ellis Island on a ship in 1926 and traveled by train to Glasgow.
Peter had homesteaded on Fifth Point at the mouth of Gilbert Creek. In 1936 they had to abandon their farm to make way for the Fort Peck Dam. They lived in Nashua for two years, then bought a farm west of Glasgow on the Tampico Road. They moved into Glasgow in 1943.
Peter died in 1950. Afterward she worked for Shepherd’s Glasgow Flower Shop and Baker’s jewelry store.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing.
She is survived by two sons, Mitchell of Sidney and Ronald of Great Falls; one daughter, Helen Marks of Glasgow and Los Angeles; a nephew, John Sallaberry of Malta; 12 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Tuesday, May 9, in St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Glasgow, with Rev. Thad Kozikowski officiating. Burial was in Highland cemetery in Glasgow.
Bell Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Ardys M. ‘Ardy’ Parr
On Sunday, May 14, 2000, my dear mother’s suffering and pain finally released her soul into the arms of God. “Pain free at last.”
Ardys M. “Ardy” Parr, 65, died peacefully in her sleep after a four year battle with cancer. She was born in Nashua, Mont., July 27, 1934, to Lester E. and Lucille Hartford.
Ardy loved crafts but was best know for her gift of crocheting. She created and shared so many beautiful treasures over the years for us all to enjoy. With this gift, she lovingly designed and crocheted her daughter’s wedding dress, a cherished heirloom of her legacy to be carried on. “Thank you Mom, it will always be our symbol of unconditional love and devotion.”
Ardy leaves behind her loving daughter, Mary Lynn Young and her husband, Ray, her adoring grandchildren that loved her so much, Raelynn, Lacy, and Corey, many special friends that remained close to her until the end, and her faithful dog, Pita.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
“Not flesh of my flesh, nor bone of my bone, but still
miraculously my own.
Never forget for a single minute, I didn’t grow under your heart,
but in it.”
Graveside inurnment will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mountview cemetery, Section 16. Arrangements were by Cremation Society of Montana, Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Irene Glasgow
On Saturday, May 13, 2000, Irene lost her long and courageous battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and close friends.
Irene was born in Laurel, on March 20, 1923, the youngest daughter of Bill and Bertha Hilderbrand. While the family lived in Ballantine, Irene attended Anita School on the Ballantine Highline. After the family moved to Billings, she attended Garfield School and graduated from Billings High School in 1941.
She met Robert Glasgow in high school in 1939 and they were married
on July 5, 1941. Irene was a member of Moss Agate Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and Bath Zabbia Temple, Daughters of the Nile.
Irene had many hobbies, sewing, quilting, making porcelain dolls and many craft projects. She loved to travel. For several years after Bob retired, they traveled in their fifth wheel to visit friends and family, attend rodeos and work at the Central Washington State Fair. Her greatest joy, though, was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known as “Granny” to all of them and their friends.
Irene is survived by her husband, Bob; daughters, Sheri Weisser (Al) of Fremont, Calif.; Cheryl Glasgow of Billings; granddaughters Kim Hegg (Doug) of Pleasanton, Calif.; Marcie Delacruz (Dave) of Bothell, Wash.; Patti Perreira of Fremont, Calif.; Robin Maxcy (Bill) of Ft. Lee, Va. and grandson John Sterling of Los Angeles, Calif.; great granddaughters Keli Ribeira of Pleasanton, Calif.; Samantha and Kaitlyn Perreira and Emily Hall of Fremont, Calif.; and great grandsons Joshua Kober and John Maxcy of Ft. Lee, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Genevieve Smith, and infant son Robert William. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service celebrating Irene’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th Street West and St. John’s Avenue. Private inurnment will take place at the Pleasantview cemetery in Ballantine. A reception will be held at the Shrine Auditorium following the Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Irene’s memory to Big Sky Hospice, P. O. Box 35033, Billings 59107 or the Al Bedoo Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund, 1125 Broadwater Avenue, Billings 59102.
