Eva Marie Hagel
Eva Marie Hagel, 80, of Billings, died peacefully at home on June 23, 2000, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Richardton, N.D., April 14, 1920, to Nickolas and Roselia Goetz. On Oct. 25, 1938, she married
John Peter Hagel at St. Stephen’s Church, south of Richardton. They moved to Billings in 1943, with about one hundred dollars in cash, four suitcases and two children, four-year-old Marlene and baby Rodger.
Eva worked at Sweetheart Bakery and then worked 20 years at the Security Building
Eva was an active member of the Women of the Moose for 45 years. She served as chairman of Friendship for the Women of the Moose, also as escort and guide and kitchen chairman for many years.
Eva and John attended many Moose conventions around the state and enjoyed their friends immensely. She was always willing to help whenever asked and put her whole heart and soul into serving.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, John; daughter, Marlene (Phillip) Morgan and son, Rodger (Susan) Hagel; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anna, Adeline and June and one brother, Victor.
A vigil service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday at St. Bernard’s Parish, 226 Wicks Lane. The Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Rite of Committal at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Aaron Clyde Hall
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Aaron Clyde Hall died on Sunday, June 18, 2000, in Gillette.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, at Kane Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.
Mark R. Haynes
JUDITH GAP – Mark Robert Haynes, 87 died at Wheatland Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home in Harlowton on June 23, 2000.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, at Judith Gap Community Methodist Church.
Janice Price Hughes
AURORA, Colo. – Janice Price Hughes, 74, of Aurora, died June 21, 2000, of cancer. Janice was born Nov. 12, 1925, to George and Mary Price in Bridger, Mont. She graduated from Bridger High School and worked for Western Union in Reno, Nev., Continental Airlines in Denver and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Denver in 1996.
She is survived by her children, Bradley Hughes of Casper, Wyo., Russell Hughes of Aurora, Karen Downing of Fort Collins, Vivian Horton of Alabama, and Ardis Hughes of Denver; her sisters, Judy Steffan and Donna Redman of Bridger, Joan Wogoman of Cody, Wyo., and Virginia Groves of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Mary Anti Weisgerber and George Winston Price.
Graveside services will be held Monday, June 26, at the Bridger cemetery.
Susan M. Koch
Susan M. Koch, 57, of Missoula, passed away at her home on Thursday, June 22, 2000. She was born Sept. 12, 1942, in Wallace, Idaho, to Winnifred and the late Irwin Puphal.
Susan attended grade school and high school in Thompson Falls, Mont. In 1959, Susan underwent open-heart surgery at University Hospital in Minneapolis. In 1963, she graduated from the University of Montana with a bachelors degree in education, and in 1976, received a master’s degree in education.
On April 18, 1964, she married
Doug Koch in Thompson Falls. On June 24, 1976, Susan and Doug became the proud mother of Lance. For 34 years, she taught reading and library skills to many children while working in the Missoula County Public School System. The schools included Willard, Emma Dickinson, Hawthorne, and Franklin.
While attending the University of Montana, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. As a trustee for the Theta Rho Delta Delta Delta Trust, she started the annual distribution of income from the trust to the University of Montana Library. From 1982 through 1999, a total of $235, 000 was donated to the library.
Throughout her career, she was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Chapter Z of PEO, Delta Delta Delta, Theta Rho Home Association, National Education Association, and Montana Education Association. She has been a member of University Congregational Church since 1964.
Her son, Lance D. Koch and her husband, Douglas L. Koch, survive her at the family home in Missoula. She is also survived by her mother, Winnifred Puphal of Thompson Falls; a sister, Patricia Sularz; and husband, Frank of Thompson Falls; niece, Lisa Visintainer and husband, Steve of Seattle; nephew, Jeff Sularz of Colorado Springs and wife, Melanie. Susan was foster mother to grandnieces, Charity and Megan Babbitts.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place at the University Congregational Church at 4 p.m. Monday, June 26. A family gathering will take place at Whitepine cemetery.
The library at Franklin Elementary School is named the Susan Koch Library in her honor. Memorials may be made to the Susan Koch Library Endowment Fund at Franklin School. Memorials may also be made to Hospice of Missoula. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
Gregory Legerski
SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Gregory Paul Legerski, 40, died on Wednesday, June 21, 2000, in Gillette.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge.
Erma M. Lode
LEWISTOWN – Erma M. Lode, 91, of Lewistown died Thursday evening at the central Montana Medical Center of natural causes. She was born Aug. 14, 1908, in Mound City, Mo., the daughter of John W. and Charlotte E. (Wilson) Calon. The family moved to Montana in 1910 homesteading south of Lewistown in the Snowy Mountains.
She began her schooling at Bear Paw School. They moved into Lewistown in 1919, and she completed her schooling in Lewistown, graduating from Fergus High School in 1928. She then taught school for two years in Wheatland County.
On June 29, 1930, she was united in marriage to Herman Lode. They made their home around Lewistown. In 1950, she went to work at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lewistown, and in 1954 she became an LPN. In 1956, they began operating the Spring Creek Rest Home until it closed in 1965. She returned to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she worked until she retired in 1974.
On June 29, 1980, Herman and Erma celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Herman passed away in 1981. She continued to live in Lewistown until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Christian Women’s Council, Women of the Moose, Academy Friendship and Heath Homemakers.
She is survived by one daughter, Helen Carol Fowler of Billings; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Erma Lode will be Monday at 3 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may make memorials to The Central Montana Hospice or the charity of their choice, and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
Addie Mae Mumedy
EKALAKA – Addie Mae Mumedy, 90, died on Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Dahl Memorial Nursing Home.
A Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday in Stevenson Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Carter County High School. Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery.
Evelyn Berniece Selman
Evelyn B. Selman, 86, of Billings, formerly of Seminole, Texas, passed away Friday, June 23, 2000, at Valley Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. She was born near Musselshell May 3, 1914, daughter of Herman C. and Marie Olson Habener. She attended schools in several area towns, graduating from Park City High School in 1934.
After her marriage to George Selman, an Atlantic Richfield employee, they resided in several southern states, ultimately settling in Seminole after his retirement.
Evelyn is survived by her brother, Leslie W. Habener and sister, Gladys Marie (Gymmie) Rawlins; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers, Clarence and Morris Habener.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th St. W. & St. Johns. Interment will follow Thursday at Gaines County Memorial cemetery in Seminole. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to charities of choice. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Evelyn May Vester
LIVINGSTON – Evelyn May Vester, 79, of Livingston, was called home to be with God Thursday morning, June 22, 2000, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 26, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home, 118 North Third Street in Livingston. Graveside committal services and burial will take place at a later date in Redvers, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Evelyn was born May 11, 1921, in Redvers, the daughter of William D. and Essie M. (Heasman) McWhirter. She spent her early life and attended schools there. At the time of her marriage to Robert Vester, she moved to Regina where they farmed. In 1957 they moved to Savage, Mont., and continued to farm in that area until later retiring and moving to Billings. Evelyn moved to Livingston in 1980 to be near family and has made her home here since.
She greatly enjoyed playing Bingo with her many dear friends, was an accomplished quilter, having created many beautiful hand made quilts and was deeply devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very courageous and maintained her gracious demeanor throughout her battle with cancer.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Allan and Vivian Vester of Regina, Sask., Denis Vester of Edmonton, Alberta, Robert Vester of Kelowna, B.C., and Carol Deary of Libby, Mont., and Murray Vester and Ruby Woods of Glendive, Mont.; her daughters and sons-in-law, Verla Dynneson and Marvin Dynneson of Livingston, Janet Vester and Jon Redlin of Lambert, Mont., Dene and Gene Ewan of Clyde Park, Lorna and Bob Otte of East Sound, Wash., and Cheryl and James Keahey of Oregon House, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Vester of Regina; two brothers and their wives, Lloyd and Lorraine McWhirter and William and Madge McWhirter, all of Regina; a sister, Myrna Allberg of Saskatoon, Sask.; 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Robert Vester, a son, Garland Vester and a brother, David McWhirter.

Glenndale Warden
HESPERIA, Calif. – Glenndale Warden, formerly of Billings, passed away suddenly at his home in Hesperia, Calif.
Glen was born on April 15, 1939, in Grand Junction, Colo. He lived in Billings for many years selling roofing and siding in Montana and Wyoming and later was a longtime employee at Frontier Chevrolet. Glen truly enjoyed people and had many friends. He was currently employed at Victorville Motors.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Lola Warden; a son, Jeff; and one sister, Wanda Zwetzig of Portland. He is survived by his wife, Emy and son, Daniel of the family home, and grown daughter, Tracy; his brothers, Charley, Jim and Lytle of Billings; sisters, Ester Tucker of Hesperia and Ilene Renn of Weed, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
We will all miss you, Glen.
Viewing will be held from 2 - 6 p.m. on Monday, June 26, at Kern’s Funeral Home in Victorville, followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Payten Ashley Watts
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Payten Ashley Watts, infant daughter of Wayne and Becky (Dornfeld) Watts, was born on June 18, 2000, at the Balboa Navy Medical Center in San Diego.
Payten is survived by her parents of San Diego; two brothers, Trevor and Torrey of the family home; grandparents, Scott and Barb Dornfeld of Sidney, Mont., Jerry and Carolyn Kimball of Miles City, Mont., Ron and Connie Watts of Miles City; two uncles, Jeff Dornfeld of Sidney, and Ryan Watts of Miles City; an aunt, Skye Watts of Miles City; great grandparents, Margie and Don Dornfeld of Kalispell, Mont., Pat and Frank Kloberdanz of Miles City, and Shirley Watts of Miles City; and numerous step-aunts and uncles, Julia, Jill, and Phillip Kinzler all of Miles City, Danny and Jolene Kimball and Bradly of Longmont, Calif., Keli and Barry Anderson and Kaci of Belgrade, Mont., and Courtney Kimball of Miles City.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 25, from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 26, at 10 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Rice officiating. Interment will follow in Baby Land at Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Lorn H. Kaercher
Lorn H. Kaercher, 81, of Billings flew with the Angels on June 20, 2000. He was born Dec. 3, 1918, on a homestead in the Rudyard area. Lorn was the son of Norman W. and Nettie (Angus) Kaercher. He attended a country school and graduated from Rudyard High.
Lorn spent several years in the Army in the South Pacific during WWII, where he received the Purple Heart. After the war, he worked in Havre, where he met and married
Maxine Smotherman in 1947. They had three sons, Marvin, Dennis, and Tracy. He worked in oil exploration for many years and retired from J.R. Simplot Co. in 1981. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling with Maxine in their RV, wintering in Yuma, Ariz., and spending the summers camping in Montana. His hobbies included woodcarving, gardening, and playing cards.
Lorn was a devoted husband, father and brother, and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Maxine; son, Dennis and wife, Gail; son, Tracy and wife, Audrey; daughter-in-law, Mary Kaercher Hopstad; three grandchildren, Dan of Scottsdale, Ariz., Brooke and Riley; and brother, Lloyd Kaercher and family of Havre.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Marvin, and three brothers.
Memorial service will be held on Monday, 11 a.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel, Billings, with a luncheon following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The American Diabetes Association, 2526 Sixth Ave. N., Ste. 216, Billings, 59101. Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
