Amy Patterson
Amy Lee Patterson, 27, a Whitefish resident, passed away Aug. 24, 2003, of natural causes in Whitefish.
She had a big heart and was one of the kindest people you could ever know. She always had time for everyone and if you needed help or love, she was there. She was a loyal friend, a loving daughter and sister and a wonderful mother to her beloved son, Alex.
She was born Aug. 9, 1976, in Kalispell. She attended Whitefish schools, and graduated in 1995. She attended the University of Montana for a year, and then graduated with an associate degree in graphic arts from the Al Collins School of Design in Tempe, Ariz., in 1998. She owned and operated rental property at the time of her passing.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Robert Patterson, and grandmother, Marlys Andre.
She is survived by her parents, Cindy and her husband, Ken Stein, and Lew and his wife, Lynn Patterson, all of Whitefish; her son, Alex Patterson of Whitefish; brothers, Chris Patterson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Rusty Patterson of Whitefish; grandparents, Betty and her husband, Richard Schultz of Rexford, William and Patricia Stein of San Diego, Calif., and Eugene Rosendahl of Minneapolis, Minn.; aunts and uncles, Lynn Rosendahl of St. Paul, Minn., Nancy Ehlenfeldt of Blaine, Minn., John Rosendahl of Duluth, Minn., Dan and Bev Rosendahl of Austin, Texas, Jim and Pattilynn Rosendahl of Stillwater, Minn., Ken and Patty August of Los Angeles, Bill and Karen Stein of Corona, Calif., Bill and Kathy Stern of Tucson, Ariz., Lee and Tracy Patterson of Whitefish, Len and Cindy Patterson of Columbia Falls, Lita Taylor of Whitefish, Lona Patterson of Boardman, Ore., Anne Shields of Missoula, and numerous loved cousins.
Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Aug. 28 (today) at the Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish with Rev. John Bent officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the Alex Patterson Education Fund at First Interstate Bank of Whitefish.
Services are under the direction of the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish.
VALORIE A. REHARD
LUTHER – Valorie Ann Rehard, 45, of Luther, passed away Friday evening, September 6, 2002 at St. Vincent Hospital & Health Center in Billings following a cerebral hemorrhage.
Valorie was born on July 29, 1957 in Santa Monica, Calif., a daughter of Malcolm and Maryann Knight. She attended Venice (CA) High School. In 1977 she moved to Red Lodge, and was married to Ralph Rehard, Jr. on Sept. 27, 1980 at Luther. Ralph and Val made their home at Luther since their marriage. For the past ten years she had been employed as a public safety officer with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.
After moving to Montana, her first job was as a rider cutting cattle at the Billings Livestock Commission. Val also trained cutting horses, and trained and showed various other breeds. She was particularly fond of Appaloosas.
“Val loved to show her dogs. She’s been trying for a champion for years—this year she got her champion. Her dogs and her show friends are going to miss her. God must have needed someone to make Him a champion. She will be missed by everyone.”
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Rehard, Jr. of Luther; her father, Malcolm Knight of Ojai, Calif.; her mother, Maryann Langford of Palmdale, Calif.; three brothers, Kenneth and Steven Knight, both of Culver City, Calif., and Loren Knight of Burbank, Calif.; and her in-laws, Patsy and Ralph Rehard, Sr. of Luther.
Memorial services were held Monday afternoon, September 9 in the Joliet Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Reed officiating. Cremation has taken place, with Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
Bill Schaeffer
Bill "Billy Ray" Schaeffer, 63, died Aug. 18, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Great Falls to Robert H. and Verona Buchan Schaeffer. An only child, he was adopted and raised by his paternal grandmother, Nelle Schaeffer, along with her own children. One of his fondest childhood memories is of coming home from school to eat her wonderful homemade pies. He grew up in Oilmont, Mont., where he also graduated from high school. He joined the Marine Corps in 1958 and served six years. In 1960, he married his childhood friend and classmate, Karen Bashor. They had two daughters, Kim and Lori. They divorced in 1977, and Karen is now deceased. He remarried in 1978 to Louella Strynadka. Together they had four children, Bobbi, Jason, Stuart and Brian. He was an iron worker for 30 years. In later years, he worked in construction management and administrative positions for various companies across the country. He earned a black belt in Karate and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, photography, and especially drawing. He volunteered as a soccer coach. He was baptized in the Methodist Church and was a lay preacher in the church in earlier years. He was a generous man, willing to give of his time and money for family and friends. His special compassion for the elderly and disabled has passed on through his children and truly is one of his greatest legacies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Bobbi.
He is survived by his aunt Pat, and her extensive family; his wife, Louella; five children, Kim and husband, Rocky; Lori and husband, Art Jason, Stuart and Brian; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Krista, Jayce, Levi, Billy, Jennifer, Veronica and husband, Wylon; three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Jordon and Dylan, all who loved him deeply.
He moved to the Immanuel Lutheran from Idaho on March 30, 1998.

VIRGINIA POLICH
HILLSBORO, Ore. — Virginia L. Polich, 82, longtime Portland resident, died at the home of her daughter in Hillsboro Aug. 29, 2002. She was born June 21, 1920 in Red Lodge, Mont., the daughter of Axel and Sarah (Rice) Nordstrom.
Virginia was raised and schooled in Red Lodge, and she and her late husband, Vic Polich, were married there on Sept. 19, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1984. In 1941, the couple moved to Portland, where they remained for the rest of their married years, with the exception of a couple of years when they lived in Denver, Colo. and Richland, Wash.
Virginia had worked as a bridal consultant for Bidell's and at a neighborhood pharmacy, and finally retired as a dental assistant. She was a longtime member of St. Clare Catholic Church in Portland. In addition to sewing and painting, she was a loving wife, mother, homemaker and caring neighbor. She was very close to her grandchildren, and was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Polich.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Edward and Maureen Polich of Banks, Ore.; a daughter and her husband, Sarann and Jim Parent of Hillsboro, Ore.; a sister, Frankie Newell of Redding, Calif., and nine grandchildren: Tina Olson of Medford, Ore., Debbie Douglas of Spain, Annette Kenney of Littleton, Colo., Jim J. Parent of Dayton, Ohio, Theresa Mahoney of Hillsboro, Ore., Chris Polich of Henniker, N.H., Anita Hansen of North Plains, Ore., Troy Polich of Palo Alto, Calif., and Ryan Polich of Madison, Wis., and 28 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sept. 6, 2002 at Christian Life Center in Aloha, Ore. Private family committal services were at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Portland. Memorials may be made to Blanche House of Portland.
ROBERT H. “BOB” KERO
PARK CITY – Robert H. “Bob” Kero, 68, of Park City, formerly of Roberts, died Monday, September 9, 2002 in his new home.
Bob was born on December 20, 1933 in the kitchen of the family home at Fox. He was the son of Nick and Martha Kero. Bob grew up on the family farm and attended the Fox School. Raised speaking the Finnish language, Bob had to take a brief course in English before starting grade school. He remained proud of his Finnish heritage throughout his life. A graduate of Red Lodge High School, Bob played basketball then and later on the independent area team. He greatly enjoyed the rivalry of playing various teams throughout the area.
On September 13, 1958 he married LaVerne Luoma in Red Lodge. They ranched and farmed on the Kero family farm for the next 34 years, and they raised two sons. LaVerne died in July of 1993.
Bob was married to Anne Forsythe on May 20, 1995 at her family’s ranch at Bozeman. They lived on the Kero farm until two weeks prior to his death when they moved to their new home at Park City.
Bob served two terms as Exalted Ruler of the Beartooth Elks Lodge, and actively promoted the Youth Hoop Shoot and Elks scholarships. He was a member of the Knights of Kaleva and held various offices over the years. Active in the Festival of Nations since its inception, he served as emcee of the Finnish Program for many years. He served on the Consolidated Ditch Cooney Dam Board for over 20 years, had served on the Fox School Board and was active in the 4H program.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Kero of Park City; two sons, Gordon Kero of Astoria, Ore. and Alan Kero of Shelby; two step-daughters, Laurie and Allana of Bozeman; one step-son, Scott of Nashua; two granddaughters, Reanna Kero of Luther and Kassandra Kero of West Yellowstone; 5 step-grandchildren, Katie, Darby, Angela, Kyle and new baby, Caitlyn; 3 brothers-in-law, Raymond Luoma, Ronald (Darlene) Luoma, and Richard (Sandy) Luoma; and two loving mothers-in-law, Irma Luoma and Jane Forsythe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife LaVerne, and father-in-law, Arthur Luoma.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 13 in the Roberts United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Roberts Cemetery, with Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Kaleva LaVerne Kero Scholarship Fund, Elks National Foundation, or the Beartooth Elks Scholarship Fund.
MARJORIE RAE BOGGIO
RED LODGE – Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at the age of 81. Jannett Marjorie Northy was born in Red Lodge on March 5, 1921, the fourth child of Matt and Hilda Northy.
She married Hank Rae on July 30, 1939. Following brief stays in the Panama Canal Zone, California and Illinois they returned to Red Lodge to raise their family. Hank passed away on May 24, 1985.
Marjorie worked for many years at the Red Lodge Clinic assisting patients with their insurance claims, and continued to help people until the last few years.
She was active in the Eagles Auxiliary, Venus Chapter #32 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Democratic Women’s Club. She was honored at the state level in 1993 as Democratic Woman of the Year. She was a member of the Red Lodge Community Church, U.C.C., and volunteered as a Cub Scout mother and Rainbow Girls and DeMolay mother. She was always supportive of her children’s activities.
On January 20, 1988 she was married to Richard Boggio. Richard passed away on October 6, 2000. With her marriage to Richard her family increased tremendously, and she loved each and every one of them. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Survivors include two sisters, Joy Ann Brandt of Billings and Regina Haggerty of California; one son Henry (Buddy) Rae and his wife Cheryl of Rawlins, Wyo.; two daughters, Jannett Gernaat of Great Falls, and Regina and husband Stan Wegner of Park City; sisters-in-law Melanie (Rae) Baretta of South Carolina and Angie Herbert of Laurel; brother-in-law and wife, Raymond and Goldie Rae of Billings; sister-in-law Alice (Lovelace) Rae of Butte; 6 grandchildren, Henry (Tyler) Rae and wife Patty of Red Lodge, Heather (Rae) and husband Brad Kimball of Billings, Jaylene (Gernaat) and husband Brendan Carlson of Billings, Dean Gernaat of Boise, Idaho, and Adrienne and Allison Wegner of Park City; 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are six step-children, Dick (Grace) Boggio of Anacortes, Wash., David (Marlene) Boggio of Red Lodge, Kaye (Marvin) Lyytinen of Laurel, Karen (Jim) Hotchkiss of Shepherd, Danny (Charlene) Boggio of Arlington, Texas, and Kris (Scott) Marshall of Bainbridge, Wash.; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 13 in the Red Lodge Community Church, U.C.C. Cremation followed services, and interment was in the Red Lodge Cemetery. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
MILDRED A. KENEVAN
RED LODGE – Mildred A. “Millie” Kenevan passed away Saturday, September 14, 2002 in Red Lodge at the age of 95. She will be mourned and missed by her nieces and nephews and their families in Canada, as well as her many friends in the Red Lodge area.
Millie was born on April 11, 1907 in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Edward and Katherine O’Leary Kenevan, and was educated there. Following graduation from business school she worked for Western Union, and in 1929 moved to Los Angeles, California where she was employed by NBC as a film production traffic controller and trainer.
Following her mother’s death in 1965, Millie took early retirement and moved to Red Lodge to live closer to her brother Leon “Red” (Mary) Kenevan, and her sister Genevieve (Leon) O’Donnell.
She is survived by the children of her sister Florence (Joseph) Redmond; namely, Kathleen (Ted) Arling of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada; Jack (Hazel) Redmond of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; Leary (Donna) Redmond of Beechy, Saskatchewan, Canada; and Audrey Redmond of Redcliff, Alberta, Canada. She is also survived by the family of her brother Chester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Chester and Leon; four sisters, Florence Redmond, Genevieve O’Donnell, Gertrude Kenevan and Kathleen Kenevan; and her special friend Thelma “Tommy” Lemkau.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 in St. Agnes Catholic Church. Rite of committal will follow in the Red Lodge Cemetery, with Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
FAYE (LAIRD) KLOSTER
Faye (Laird) Kloster, 80, died Sept. 8, 2002 in Tacoma, Wash. She was born in Clinton, Ind. May 22, 1922, and was a former resident of Bearcreek and Washoe, Mont.
Her husband, Jack Kloster, preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, John Kloster, and his wife, Marie, of Tacoma, Wash.; three grandchildren, Adam, Adrienne and Corey; one sister, Jane Laird Biestek of Dearborn, Mich., and four nieces, Pat Saj of Ohio, and Pam Konczak, Connie Pomeroy and Karen Biestek, all of Dearborn, Mich.
A memorial service was held at Gaffney Funeral Home in Tacoma, with interment at Mountain View Cemetery, also in Tacoma.
GERTRUDE DRYDALE
Gertrude Drydale, 93, of Torrance, Calif., died Sept. 23, 2002. She was born Feb. 3, 1909 in Joplin, Mo., and lived the last 52 years in California.
She taught third grade in the Gardena school system for 25 years. She was active in her church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glee Drydale; and her son, Cecil Drydale, formerly of Red Lodge. She is survived by her daughter, three grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct. 3, 2002 in Red Lodge, with interment in the Red Lodge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
