LUCILLE M. KEENAN
MUNISING, Mich. — Lucille M. Keenan, 92, formerly of Roberts and Red Lodge, Mont., entered eternal life Monday morning, Jan. 1, 2001.
Lucille was born in Roberts, Montana on March 7, 1908, a daughter of Harry and Ella Brynes Matthews. She graduated from Roberts High School and completed nursing training in Great Falls, Mont. She resided in Red Lodge for 56 years before moving to Michigan in January, 1999 to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She loved tending her flowers, bowling, dining out and taking drives into the mountains.In 1937 she was married to William M. Keenan in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Alice Matthews.
Lucille’s career as a registered nurse spanned several decades. She was employed at St. Ann’s Hospital in Anaconda, and in early years at the Adams Hospital in Red Lodge. After the Carbon County Memorial Hospital was built in Red Lodge, she continued to work there until retiring when she was in her 70s.
She is survived by her beloved brother, Harry Matthews and wife, Catherine, of Roberts; her daughter, Ellen (Keith) Steinhoff of AuTrain, Mich.; five grandchildren, Fred (Nancy) Bennett, Beverly (John) Dominick, Annette (Tony) Zaleski, MaryEllen Bonevelle and Alice (Joe) Prunick; 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and her niece and nephew, Mykel and Daniel Matthews of Roberts.
The vigil service was held Jan. 5 in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 6 in the church. Rite of Committal was in the Red Lodge Cemetery, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Beartooth Hospital & Health Center Auxiliary or to the Red Lodge-Roberts Senior Citizens Center.
DAN EDWARD ABRAHAMS
Dan Abrahams, 88, of Red Lodge died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Billings Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. He was born Sept. 18, 1912 on a farm west of Red Lodge, the son of Trenholm and Ella (Doty) Abrahams.
Dan proudly served his country with the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and participated in the Invasion of New Guinea in 1942. He was a member of the Red Lodge BPOE #534, VFW, Disabled Veterans and the Red Lodge Community Church.
Dan loved Montana’s natural beauty and the time he spent camping and hunting with his family and friends.
Survivors include two brothers, George of Spire, Okla. and Tom of Billings.
A memorial service was held Feb. 5 at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service was entrusted with the arrangements.
ELMER NEFF
Elmer Neff of Yakima, Wash., formerly of Red Lodge, died Jan. 18, 2001. He was born Jan. 15, 1917 at Bend, Ore.
Inurnment took place Jan. 24, 2001 at Outlook Cemetery in Outlook, Wash.
VERLA E. THIEL
Verla E. Thiel, 81, of Billings, formerly of Red Lodge, passed away at her home in the comfort of her family after a long illness.
Verla was born July 29, 1920 in Vida, Mont. She was married to Clifford W. Thiel for 61 years. They had three children, LaVerna (Gene) Kohler of Billings, Jeani (Dick) Moore of Hardin and Buzz (Tracy) Thiel of Red Lodge.
Other survivors include eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Feb. 3, 2001 at Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Inurnment will be at a later date in the Red Lodge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.
GUIDO MARCHELLO
Guido A. Marchello, 89, of Red Lodge, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Marchello was born in Butte, and graduated from Red Lodge High School in 1929. In 1935, he married Mary Polk and they celebrated 65 years together.
Guido operated the Union Market in Bearcreek for 25 years and started the IGA in Red Lodge in 1957. In 1967, he founded Guido’s Meat Processing which he ran until retiring in 1989.
Guido was civic minded and won many commendations and awards. He was secretary of Rotary for 20 years. He also served as mayor of Bearcreek and served on the Red Lodge School Board.
His wife Mary and two sons, Dr. John (Elaine) and Randy (Nan), his brothers Dr. Bino (Ginger) and Ed, and brother-in law Joe Polk survive him. He has five grandchildren: Mick, Jerry, Marissa, Krista and Mackenzie, and six great-grandchildren.
Cremation has occurred and a memorial service was held at the Corpus Christi Church in Phoenix on Feb. 13, 2001.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions to a memorial scholarship fund be made to UAF/Guido Marchello Fund, University of Arizona, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Tucson, AZ 85721.
CHARLES JARVIE
Charles Jarvie passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2001 of heart failure after a short illness.
He was born in Kaustinen, Finland on Dec. 10, 1913, and migrated to Red Lodge two years later with his family in 1915. He graduated from Carbon County High School in Red Lodge with the class of 1932. He was the only surviving member of the family, as the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Pumella) Jarvie, and two sisters, Ingrid Brehm and Melba Herronen.
“Charlie” was a great sportsman, and loved fishing in the rivers and lakes around Red Lodge. He worked on the Cooke City (Beartooth) Highway during the early 1930s, and sent regular parcels of fresh trout down the mountain to his friends and family.
He retired from Ryan Aeronautical Company after 38 years with the firm in California, and is survived by his wife, Joy, currently residing in San Diego, and a son, Jan Jarvie, who lives in England. He has one granddaughter, Jessica, who spends her time in Arizona, working for a travel agency.
MICHAEL HOWARD MILLER
Michael Howard Miller, 53, of Kansas City, Mo. was born Nov. 18, 1947 in Waynesville, Mo. He spent many wonderful childhood years near there, where his grandparents farmed. His life on this earth ended Feb. 11, 2001 after a short illness in Kansas City at Truman Medical Center. He attended schools in Missouri and Montana, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1965. He was stationed in San Diego and served aboard the USS Hollister.
He is survived by his parents, Joyce and Phillip Al Miller of Red Lodge; sisters, Cheryl (Randy) Bodley of Billings and Cynthia (Leonard) Harris; niece, Sandee and nephew Phillip of Portland, Ore., and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Michael had a quick smile and a gleam in his eye. He was a grateful and kind person who appreciated all those who touched his life. In all he endured, he made the best of life’s difficulties.
“Michael, our beloved son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, we will miss you every day. You are in our hearts. We love you dearly. May you finally rest in the peace of our Lord’s loving presence.”
A private funeral was held Feb. 20, with interment in Mountview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Montana Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 3232, Billings, MT 59103, or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
LUCILLE WRIGHT BURNS
Lucille Wright Burns was born April 22, 1911 in Red Lodge. She was the daughter of Eastern Montana pioneers Charles Edward Wright and Ida Lamport Wright. She was the granddaughter of George and Lodina Lamport, early Colson residents, and was raised in Red Lodge and Billings. She was a member of PEO Chapter S.
Lucille was preceded in death by her brother, George M. Wright; a sister, Maude Tolman; a son, Charles Nathan Cooper, and her husband, Richard Burns.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Cooper, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is pending.
LOUISE V. LEACH
Louise V. Leach, 78, of Eugene, Ore., formerly of Culp Creek, Ore., died Feb. 20, 2001 of heart failure.
Louise was born Jan. 23, 1923 in Bearcreek, Mont., a daughter of August and Emily Dervelle. She graduated from Bearcreek High School and attended two years of beauty college. She married John A. Leach, Jr. in Red Lodge, Mont., on June 27, 1944, and was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning, reading, latch-hook crafts, gardening and, especially, spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, and a son, Charles “Chuck” Leach in 1987.
She is survived by a son, Vernon Leach, and his wife, Betty, of Dorena, Ore., and a daughter, Charollette and her husband, Ed Wilson, of Eugene; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Feb. 23, 2001 at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel in Cottage Grove, Ore., with burial in Sears Cemetery.
