Lois was born in Avondale, Mont., on May 26, 1923, to John and Laura Padgett. She was the second of four children. She would ride horse to grade school in Green Valley and graduated from Ophiem High School. Her father worked on the Fort Peck Dam and one day while sitting on her father's shoulders, she saw President Roosevelt speak. While in high school, she played trumpet in the jazz band and would travel the countryside playing at dances, sometimes until four in the morning.
Lois married
and moved to California where her first son, Duane, was born. She worked at a factory where she would have to have the steadiest hand to get the precise weight for diamond saw blades. She also attended and graduated from beauty school. With Doris Kieffer, she packed up Duane and her belongings into "Suzie" (a '36 Ford) and made the trip back to Montana, where she worked as a beautician in Plentywood. She turned many heads when she came to Plentywood, but her mind was set on Howard. She persuaded him to leave college and come back to Plentywood. They were married
Feb. 12, 1951, and honeymooned in Cuba. They made their home in an apartment in Plentywood; Howard sold welders and farmed and Lois worked as a beautician. They had two sons, Randy born in 1953 and Brian born in 1955.
Lois told many stories of her days in that apartment as a working woman raising three sons. She worked for the ASCS office for nine years but always kept up her hair dressing business, fixing hair for friends and neighbors. She worked many years at the nursing home and Pioneer Manor fixing hair for the ladies there,
Lois had so many talents, She loved golfing, music and loved to dance. She and Howard belonged to a square dance club for many years. She sewed clothing for herself and others and left behind beautiful quilts. She was a gifted artist and has many paintings hanging in her house and the homes of her children. She was a good cook and loved to entertain, serving huge meals on holidays or just everyday gatherings, always a gracious hostess making anyone feel comfortable. She was active in the Church helping out whenever she was called.
It's hard to know if Lois' beauty came from her good looks or if it came from the warm and bubbly personality that showed so clearly to everyone who met her. Her laughter and the way she made you feel about yourself will be what we will miss the most.
Lois, 76, died March 22, 2000, after spending the last four and a half years in Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood. She is preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Dean. She is survived by her husband, Howard; three sons, Duane, Randy and Brian, and nine grandchildren: Kurt, Kim, Wade, Corey, Jessica, Brandy, Aaron, Chase, and Whitney and one great-grandchild, Kedar.
