FERN PARKER ROWLAND
JOLIET — Fern Parker Rowland, 79, of Joliet, died early Saturday morning, April 15, 2000 in Beartooth Hospital & Health Center in Red Lodge following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Hardin on April 30, 1920, she was a daughter of Chester and Vida Redman. She was raised and educated in Fromberg. In 1936 she married Ralph Parker and they farmed at Bridger. Mr. Parker died in 1968.

On Aug. 14, 1970, she married Gordon Rowland. They ranched at Joliet until retiring into town in 1992.

Fern was a charter member of the Joliet Baptist Church, and was active in the Joliet Senior Citizens. She greatly enjoyed rock hunting with her two sisters and fishing with her grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Allan, and a brother, Paul Redman.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon Rowland of Joliet, one daugher, Sue (Curtis) Schwend of Roberts; two sons, Bob (Sue Ellen) Parker of Chicago, Ill., and Tom Parker of Dallas, Texas.; two sisters, Toots Parker of Bridger and Marjorie (Sid) Taylor of Fromberg; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 18 in the Joliet Baptist Church. Interment was in the Bridger Cemetery, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Joliet Baptist Church, Box 291, Joliet, MT 59041, or to the charity of one’s choice.

ANN GRACE SHANDY LOSE
RED LODGE — Ann Lose, 49, of Boyd, passed away Tuesday morning, April 25, 2000 at Beartooth Hospital & Health Center, succumbing to a three-year battle with cancer.
Ann Grace Shandy was born in Red Lodge on June 18, 1950, a daughter of Virgil G. and Helen Shandy. Ann was raised on Cole Creek, north of Joliet. She attended Joliet schools, graduating from high school in 1968.

Ann met and married Paul A. Lose of Belfry, and to this union three children were born, Paul Mark and Matthew Clyde Lose of Billings, and Dana Michelle Castellani, her husband, Raymond, and their son Quentin, all of Red Lodge.

Ann, Paul and family made their home in Bearcreek for 16 years, and resided at Boyd the past six years. Ann served as postmaster in Bearcreek for 18 years, and was an LPN at Beartooth Hospital for many years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Bearcreek Women’s Club, Red Lodge Bible Study and Joliet Christian Church.

Ann’s family would like to thank everyone at Cancer Treatment Center of Tulsa, Okla., Beartooth Hospital and Beartooth Home Care and Hospice, all of Red Lodge.

In addition to her husband, children and grandchild, Ann is survived by three brothers, Dallas W. (Marlene) Parkins of Billings; Evan L. (Janet) Parkins of Columbus, and Thomas D. (Diane) Shandy of Billings; sister-in-law Sally Baldwin of Lander, Wyo.; mother-in-law, Helene Lose of Billings; sister-in-law, Cindy (Steve) Pfeifer of North Richland Hills, Texas, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, Bill Parkins, and her father-in-law, Paul S. Lose.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29 in the Joliet Christian Church. Interment followed in the Joliet Cemetery. Cremation has taken place, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel assisting with arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Joliet Christian Church, or to Beartooth Hospital Home Care or Hospice.

TIMOTHY LEROY NOTTINGHAM
COQUILLE, Ore. — Timothy LeRoy Nottingham, 17, of Coquille, formerly of Belfry, Mont., passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at Eugene, Ore., from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
He was born on July 28, 1982 in Powell, Wyo., a son of Timothy W. and OLinda Nottingham. He lived in Montana and Texas for several years before moving to Powers, Ore., in 1995 where he attended school for two years. Timothy then spent two years in Winnemucca, Nev., before moving to Coquille a year ago.

He was a junior at Coquille High School where he was an honor student and a member of the Drama Club. Tim worked as a DJ at a local radio station and at Figaro’s Pizza, and he also did landscaping and yard work.

Timothy enjoyed music, woodworking, gardening, working on cars and fishing, but his greatest love was his family. He was a member of the Coquille Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tim was full of life and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include his father, Timothy W. and Marie Nottingham of Coquille; his mother, Olinda and Gerald Gose of Fromberg; two brothers, Michael and Monica and nephew Tristian Nottingham of Abilene, Texas, and Matthew and Sonja Nottingham of Victoria Venetto, Italy; one sister, Tina Nottingham and nephew Raven of Fromberg; grandfather, Squire Jones of Belfry; grandmother, Laura Nottingham of Belfry and grandparents Kenneth and Betty Betts of Powers, Ore., and Dorothy Gose of Hutchinson, Kan.; one stepbrother, Johnathan Johns of Bakersfield, Calif., and four stepsisters, Cheryl Johns of Coquille, Melanie Johns of Milford, Calif., Layna Crabtree of Molino, Fla., and Julie Johns of Bandon, Ore.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 2 in the Belfry Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment followed in the Belfry Cemetery, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge in charge of arrangements. Services in Oregon were held April 29 in the Coquille High School Gymnasium.

PATRICK GLEN BENZ
RED LODGE — Patrick Glen Benz, 45, of Red Lodge, passed away May 5, 2000 of a brain aneurysm. He was born Nov. 11, 1954 in Butte to William P. and Josephine M. Benz. He grew up in Walkerville, where he attended Blaine and Sherman schools. After graduating from Butte High School in 1973, Pat worked at various jobs until 1976 when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. During his four years in the service, Pat spent much of his time in Iwakuni, Japan, where he was an equipment mechanic. He enjoyed learning about the customs and culture there.
While in the Marine Corps, he earned many honors including three meritorious promotions, Good Conduct Medal, Sea Duty Ribbon, Marine of the Month, 1st Marine Air Wing, Meritorious Mast, Commanding General’s Letter of Commendation, Honor Graduate NCO School, and Honor Graduate Journeyman Plumbing and Water Supply School. He was very proud of these accomplishments.

Before completing his “hitch” in the Marines, Pat joined the Job Corps, where he learned to operate various heavy equipment. He used his new talents by helping bring power to people working in the coal mines for Western Energy in Colstrip. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers since 1975.

Pat enjoyed operating heavy equipment so much that, after meeting the love of his life, Theresa Coss Hawman of Red Lodge, he took her as his wife and opened his own business, carving out a living since 1993.

He enjoyed sharing his life with his wife and step-children, Gabriel and Christina, by going hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing and working together to build a life of which they all could be proud.

Pat is survived by his wife, Theresa; step-children Gabe and Christina; brothers and sisters-in law, Harold and Ruby Anderson of Lewistown, Robin and Debbie Anderson of Butte and Ed and Mary Ann Benz of Bozeman; a sister, Lorraine Anderson; mother-in-law, Elaine Coss Hanson of Pierre, S.D.; three brothers-in-law, Steven Coss of Pierre, Zac (Agnes) Coss of Ketchikan, Alaska and Jordan (Tonia) Coss of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Debra (Ron) Coss-Frike of Vancouver, Wash., and Rebecca (Bob) Coss-Stack of Loveland, Colo.; and a brother-in-law, Frank Ropp. He also had many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Nancy, and a sister-in-law, Mary Ropp. Services were held May 9 at the Olcott Funeral Home in Red Lodge. Cremation followed the service. Consistent with his willingness to help others, Pat’s organs were donated for transplant and research.

Memorials may be made to an organization of one’s choice.

Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of arrangements.

ELSIE K. KINDSFATER
BILLINGS — Elsie K. Kahler Kindsfater, formerly of Red Lodge, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 7, 2000. She was born on Sept. 9, 1928 to Henry and Katie Lenhardt in Billings. She attended Eldergrove and Senior High School.
She was united in marriage with Harold L. Kahler on Feb. 9, 1947. Harold passed away on June 17, 1984. On Dec. 22, 1989, she married Richard Kindsfater.

Elsie worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. most of her adult life. She then retired to Red Lodge, where she built the home she had always dreamed of. A lot of fishing, camping and family get-togethers took place during the years of raising three children. Elsie loved to dance to her native German music, especially the polka. After Elsie and Richard were married, she convinced him to take dancing lessons. She and Richard did a lot of traveling, joining the “snowbird” population during the winter. Elsie was an active member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church and the Eagles and Elks lodges. “Dance in Heaven, Mom; we will love and miss you always.”

Elsie is survived by her husband, Richard; her daughter, Melvina (John) Sheard; her son, Jerry (Patsy) Kahler; her daughter-in-law, Raylene Kahler, her step-son, Pat (Penny) Kindsfater; her grandchildren, Nadine (Tim) Scoville, Todd (Heidi) Peterson, Amy, Christy, Brad, Derek, David and Leslie Kahler; her brothers, Richard (Dorris) Lenhardt, Fred (Helen) Lenhardt and Clarence Lenhardt; her step-grandchildren, Megan Kindsfater, Mike (Traci) Sheard and Susan Sheard, and four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Megan, Skyler and Samantha. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Larry Kahler, her brother, Adolph, and his wife, Lucille Lenhardt, and brother Leo Lenhardt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Mount Olive Lutheran Church, the American Diabetes Association, or the charity of one’s choice.

FRANK CARPENTER
KALISPELL — Frank Carpenter, 80, passed away Nov. 10, 2000 at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell.
He was born Oct. 18, 1920, in Red Lodge, to Vincent and Anna Walsh Flaherty. He grew up in Red Lodge. At the age of one his father passed away. At the age of six, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Sam and Helen Carpenter.
He remained in Red Lodge until his marriage to Rosetta Everett on Nov. 19, 1939, when they moved to McMinnville, Ore. While in Oregon, he began working for the local paper called Telephone Register, now know as the News Register.

In 1942, due to illness, he had to leave the Telephone Register and they moved to Kalispell. He worked at a service station for a short time before he began playing the bass fiddle and singing in 1944. He was in a group called the City Dudes for several years, and played in Hungry Horse during the construction of the dam. He was also the house musician at Orley’s.

From 1952 to 1960, he worked as a television repairman at McIntosh Music House in Kalispell. In 1960, he purchased McIntosh and renamed it Carpenter’s Electronics. He owned and operated Carpenter’s until 1965 when he was forced to retire from music and electronics repair due to illness. From 1970 to 1980, he was employed with C. Powell Electric.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife. In 1987, they joined the Coast to Coast Campground Club in Bullhead City, Ariz. In 1995, they made a loop across the United States with their fifth-wheel trailer, seeing many sites and just spending time together. He most recently went to Anchorage, Alaska.

When he was home, he enjoyed spending time in his wood shop, making numerous things.

He was a member of the Musicians Union until he retired from music, and was a member of the Eagle’s Lodge in Kalispell for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his adopted parents, and one brother, Vincent Carpenter.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Rosetta of Kalispell; five children, Larry Carpenter and his wife, Roberta, of Anchorage; Frances Bruch and her husband, Marlowe, of Kalispell; Geraldine Neas and her husband, Larry, of Anchorage; Helen Netzel and her husband, Larry, of Whitefish; and Cindy Eklund and her husband, Matt, of Lakeside; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one half-sister, Juanita Houghton of Billings.

Funeral services were held at Johnson Mortuary Chapel with Rev. John Ulrich of Lakeside Chapel officiating. Burial followed at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Lakeside Chapel in Lakeside, or to the American Cancer Society at P.O. Box 1002, Kalispell, MT 59903.
