BAPTISTE JOHN BERTOLINO, JR.
ROBERTS — Baptiste John “Batt” Bertolino, Jr. died peacefully in his home one mile south of Roberts on Feb. 25, 2000.
Batt was born May 27, 1909 in Red Lodge to Battista and Maria (Gatto) Bertolino. He grew up on the family ranch out by Cooney Reservoir. In 1933 he helped his father build Batt’s New Deal Bar in Roberts, where they worked together. He married Louise Bosso in 1934. Together they had two children.
In 1944, Batt joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Kwajolein, a baby flattop, as an anti-aircraft gunner. When he was discharged, he returned to Roberts to work with his father.
In 1953, Batt sold the bar and began ranching south of Roberts. He loved to irrigate. He will be remembered riding his Honda with boots and shovel to set the water for his hayfields and pasture.
Batt was a good citizen. He was an important part of the Roberts community. He attended school activities, the VFW, was a charter member of the Red Lodge Elks and president of the Italian Lodge in Red Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He will be remembered for his stories at family gatherings. “That’s the way it was and we liked it that way.”
He was a philospher whose wise words were a guide to all who listened. Family was most important to Granddad. He let that be known, not only by his words but by his actions. He was the head of his family. The lessons and ethics learned from him cannot be found in a classroom or book.
Batt is survived by his daughter, Barbara Crawford of Billings; his son, Richard Bertolino (Danna) of Roberts; his grandchildren, Theresa (Dan), Treena (Todd), Dena, Daneen (Rob), Joel, Garry, Craig (Susan), Brian (Kathleen) and Kristine (Lee), and his 12 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Joe, Pete and Keeno; his son-in-law, Chris Crawford, and his wife of 64 years, Louise.
Funeral services were held Feb. 29, 2000 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Interment was at the Roberts Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.
BETTYE STEINMASEL BURROWS
YUMA, Ariz. — Bettye Steinmasel Burrows died Jan. 23, 2000 in Yuma.
She was born April 4, 1922 in Red Lodge.
She is survived by one sister, Dorothye McGrath of Griffen, Ga.; four brothers, Ed of Rock Island, Wash., Robert (Marie) and Ken (Joyce) of Renton, Wash., and Jack (Pat) Steinmasel of Red Lodge, and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Interment will be in the John Henry Cemetery at Luther, Mont., at a later date.
PHYLLIS CHILDS MORFIT
RED LODGE — Phyllis Childs Morfit, 84, passed away peacefully Feb. 28, 2000, surrounded by her family.
Services will be held Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m. at her home, 911 So. Grant St. in Red Lodge, foallowed by interment in the Roscoe Cemetery and a reception at the Lazy EL Ranch in Roscoe.
TAIMI VIOLA JARVI
RED LODGE — Taimi Viola Jarvi, 80, died March 5, 2000. She was born in Red Lodge June 5, 1919, the daughter of Simmon and Margerett Jakkola.
Taimi attended Red Lodge and Draper schools, and resided in Red Lodge her entire life. She worked in the Carbon County Assessor’s Office, and retired after 25 years. She was an active member of the Granite Peak VFW Auxiliary since 1946. A true Finlander, she participated in the Festival of Nations since it began in 1950. Taimi was an excellent carpet weaver and enjoyed weaving carpets for family and friends. Many will remember her rug weaving demonstrations during the Festival. Taimi was an avid bowler, and was a member of the Red Lodge team that won the Montana State Women’s Bowling Championship in 1977. She continued to be an active member of the Thursday Afternoon Women’s League until her death. She also loved gardening, and having coffee with her many friends.
RED LODGE — Taimi Viola Jarvi, 80, died March 5, 2000. She was born in Red Lodge June 5, 1919, the daughter of Simmon and Margerett Jakkola.
Taimi is survived by her son, Edward Jarvi of Red Lodge; a brother, Ed Jakkola of Missoula; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Einar and Vern, and a sister, Ilene.
Funeral service was Friday, March 10, 2000 at the Dahl Funeral Chapel. Interment followed at the Red Lodge Cemetery.
A soft-spoken lady with a gentle smile and sparkling blue eyes, she will be missed and remembered by many.
EVELYN NOTT
BRIDGER — Evelyn Nott, 76, of Bridger, died of natural causes Tuesday afternoon, March 7, 2000 in her home.
Evelyn Kelsey Nott was born on July 22, 1923 at Belfry, a daughter of Leander and Bessie Cook Kelsey. She joined two other siblings, and later welcomed six additional brothers and one sister. The family lived on the Claude Youst property south of Belfry.
Evelyn attended high school in Belfry, and was married to Roy Nott on May 14, 1940 in Bearcreek. They were joined by five children. The Notts lived in the Laurel and Billings area where Roy was employed as a truck driver for E.L. Jones Trucking for 18 years. They moved to California in 1956 and returned to Bridger in 1975, where Evelyn spent the remainder of her life.
Survivors include sons Kenneth (Cheryl) Nott of Watsonville, Calif., James (Malvena) Nott of Bridger, and Wayne (Theresa) Nott of Bridger; daughter Linda (Don) Skorupa of Bridger; brothers and sisters Everett (Iva) Kelsey of Cody, Leona Starbird of Watsonville, Calif., Marvin (Bessie) Kelsey of Las Cruces, N. Mex., Leo (Frances) Kelsey of Bridger, Betty (Hank) Bratsky of Bridger, Harold (Betsy) Kelsey of Gilroy, Calif., and Vernon (Marilyn) Kelsey of Castroville, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Marj Kelsey of Amalga, Utah; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Roy Nott; an infant daughter, Betty Lou; her parents; and two brothers, Bob and Lawrence Kelsey.
Evelyn loved to crochet, and she enjoyed baking, sewing, and taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was everyone's grandma — she will be missed by loved ones and friends alike. ONE SPECIAL ANGEL - ONE SPECIAL LITTLE GRANDMA, We love you and will miss you; we will really miss your wonderful lemon meringue pie! 'Til we meet again in heaven... Love, your family.
Visitation was Thursday, March 9 in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Cremation followed, and a family memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Belfry Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Bridger Ambulance Fund.
MARY DAWN ROPP
ROBERTS — Mary Dawn Ropp, age 37, of Roberts, died Saturday, March 11, 2000 at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. She had suffered an aneurysm while attending a school-sponsored ski day with her children at Red Lodge Mountain.
She was born March 14, 1962 at Miller, S.D., the daughter of John and Elaine Coss. She was raised in Miller and graduated from high school at Rochester, Minn. She attended Powell Community College studying in the equestrian program.
Mary married Frank LeRoy Ropp on June 2, 1984 in Red Lodge. She worked closely with her husband, Frank, on their ranch near Cooney Dam located in the Roberts area. She also worked outside the home as a waitress and host, and most recently as assistant banquet manager at Rock Creek Resort.
The love and joy of her life was her family, her church and her many close friends. She had the ability to give joy to the many people who crossed her path. She spent much of her time helping with the Sunday School program of her church, the Roberts United Methodist Church.
Another passion of Mary’s was her horsemanship, and her love of her faithful horse, Abe, which has been at her side for the past 18 years.
Survivors include her husband, Frank; four children, Frank “Tyson” Ropp, 14, MeLia Dawn Ropp, 11, Macy Shay Ropp, 8, and McKenzie Lynn Ropp, age six. Also surviving is her mother, Elaine Coss Hanson of Pierre, S.D., three brothers, Steven Coss of Pierre, Zac (Agnes) Coss of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Jordan (Tonia) Coss of Rochester, Minn.; three sisters, Debra (Ron) Coss-Fricke of Vancouver, Wash.; Rebecca (Bob) Coss-Stack of Loveland, Colo., and Theresa (Pat) Benz of Red Lodge, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her father, John, sister Victoria, step-father Robert Hanson, mother-in-law Mildred Ropp and sister-in-law, Brenda Jo Ropp.
Funeral services were held March 14 at the Roberts High School gym. Cremation followed the service.

Mary’s strong belief in the organ donation program is being demonstrated through the donation of her organs, benefiting the lives of at least ten recipients and aiding in medical research
DARCY E. THOMAS
RED LODGE — Darcy E. Thomas, 92, of Red Lodge, died Saturday afternoon, March 11, 2000 in Cedar Wood Villa.
Born on July 7, 1907 in Wanette, Okla., he was a son of Gabriel and Tennessee Thomas. The family settled in Billings, and Darcy attended high school there.
On Sept. 1, 1926, he married Jessie Burton in Columbus. They resided in Billings before settling in Red Lodge. Darcy operated a bulk propane business, had the Snap-On Tool dealership, and performed gas appliance installation before retiring.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was a member of the American Legion Carbon Post #17, and was a devoted member of the Beartooth Elks Lodge for many years. He had served on the Red Lodge City Council, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Jessie Thomas of Red Lodge; four nieces, Bonnie Sutton of Missoula, Jean Marilyn Jones of Bozeman, Gloria Kealy of Spokane, Wash., and DeAnn Thomas of Billings; one nephew, Larry Burton of Missoula, and one brother, Thermon (Ann) Thomas of Billings.
He was preceded in death by sisters Addie, Beatrice and Julia, and a brother, Arnold.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 17 in the Olcott Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Red Lodge Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Beartooth Elks Scholarship Fund, Cedar Wood Villa or to the charity of one’s choice.
