Marie G. Hilyard
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Marie G. Hilyard will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000. Pastors David C. Curtright and Robert Walker will officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Plentywood cemetery. Marie, 91, died Friday afternoon at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.
Marie was born May 26, 1908, at Hannaford, N.D.; the daughter of Ludvig and Martina (Hetland) Hareland. She grew up on the family farm there, graduated from high school, and completed one year of college at Valley City, N.D. She came to Montana in June 1928, and settled in Plentywood; she married Charles Hilyard at Scobey, Aug. 31, 1929. Except for a year during World War II, Plentywood has been their home since. Marie often said that the most important thing she has learned in her life was to live by the Golden Rule: to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She loved sheep ranching, and caring for their sheep and poultry.
During harvest she loved to ride the combine; and even after retirement, she brought hot meals to lambing crews at all hours of day and night. After Charlie's death, April 11, 1988, Marie lived at home as long as she could, but even after a move to the Montana Pioneer Manor, she frequently went back to the ranch to oversee the crews running the operation, and give a helping hand in any way she could. She sewed, maintained a large garden, and was constantly canning produce ... even this Oct. after a severe stroke, she worried about some apples she hadn't yet processed! She was always very frugal, and was never still; she kept constantly busy with something, whether singing in church and community choirs, quilting with groups at Plentywood Lutheran Church and the Montana Pioneer Manor, any community events found Marie an active participant. She was always at the center of her large and extended family; everyone was in constant touch with her, and she knew everything about everyone's activities (sometimes whether they wanted her to know or not!) Christmas Eve was always a boisterous time at her home for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and Marie was always at the center of the commotion. Her memory was incredible, and even after the stroke in Oct., she would ask about someone, and was able to give names, birthdays and telephone numbers from memory.
Marie is survived by two sons, Harold ("Bud") and his wife Betty; and Marlo ("Peewee") and his wife S. Fay; both of Plentywood; and three daughters: Ann Charlene ("Tootie") Lindberg, of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; May Irene ("Butch") Budke and her husband Gerald, of Plentywood; and Doris K. ("Peggy") Aastrom and her husband Lee, of Wheatland, Wyo. She is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Marsh Bakke, of Plentywood; and Myrtle Ohman, of Rigby, Idaho; Irene Frasier, of Plentywood, Charlie's cousin, has been as close as a sister. Marie has 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Harry Dean ("Tubby',) whose wife, Faye, survives, residing in Las Cruces, N.M.; by three brothers, Sidney, Lloyd, and Herman ("Pete') and one sister, Irene Jordet.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.
