Edward L. Hargis, M.D.
We celebrate the life of Edward L. Hargis, M.D., 65, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side Jan. 5, 2000, at his home. He was born March 25, 1934, in Ashton, Idaho, to Thomas and Muriel Hargis. On June 15, 1957, he married
his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Frances Ann Herre. Ed was the proud and loving father to Mike, Leslie and Linda. Most of all he was the devoted "Papa" to Jennifer, Jeremy, Kallie and Calvin.
Dr. Hargis graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School. He did his residency at University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology. After living in Wisconsin and Maine, Edward and Frances moved their family to Billings in 1967, where he quickly fell in love with everything Montana. To describe Edward as a passionate fisherman is not saying enough. The joy he felt while fishing was something he instilled in each of his children and many who came in contact with him. Edward was never happier than when he had his "youngsters" with him and Frances at the cabin for a weekend or for an extended stay.
Dr. Hargis' other passion was his ophthalmology practice. His patients were always more than just patients. They were people entrusting their eyesight to him and he treated each individually. Many times the relationships went beyond doctor-patient and Dr. Hargis was always delighted by a new joke told by one of his patients. As a surgeon, Dr. Hargis touched the lives of many and will continue to touch them for many years to come.
Edward is survived by his wife, Frances; his son Michael (Maridee) Hargis; his daughters Leslie (Mark) Greenshields and Linda (Eric) Bjorgum. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret (Leo) Hammond and Muriel (Ken) McLean and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas B. and Muriel Hargis, his brother Thomas, his sister Marie Graham and his brother Jim Hargis.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 180 24th St. W. in Billings,. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Big Sky Hospice or another charity of choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
Papa, we are, always have been, and always will be, proud of you. You may never know the influence you had on us, but it was most profound. We know you are happy now. We will carry you with us forever.
