Lewis H. 'Lew' Miller

Lew was born in McFarland, Kan., and came to Montana as a small boy. He lived in the Bridger-Fromberg area and then settled with his family in the Snowy Mountains. He married
Emerald Owings in 1935, and they continued their life together in various areas of Wheatland and Golden Valley counties, including Wallum, Bercail, Franklin, Barber and Ryegate.
Lewis was one of the "old timers" of the area; all but Ryegate are now ghost towns. He ranched his entire life, staying active in the operations of the Miller Ranch until his death. For a short time he worked on the railroad and with Emerald, operated the grocery store and post office in Franklin,
In 1959, Lewis and Emerald moved to Park County near Livingston where they ranched for 15 years. In 1974 they moved back to Wheatland County and continuing ranching and farming. Emerald died in 1976. In 1978, he married
Hester Moore Sturdevant and they enjoyed a busy and full life in Harlowton. Lew was tremendously blessed to have the opportunity to collectively have more than 62 years with these beautiful women. He knew he was one lucky cowboy!
Besides his beloved wife Hester, he leaves three daughters, Donna (Ed) Downey of Independence, Mo., Becki (Dennis) Parisi of Harlowton, and Jodi (John) Peake of American Falls, Idaho; five Miller sons, Lewis Jr. "Festus," Bill (Charlotte), David (Renee), and Mark (Mary) of Harlowton, and Ken (Robin) of Saratoga Springs, Wyo. He also leaves Hester's children, Dan (Jo) Sturdevant of Clancy and Donna (Don) Haugen of Billings; and 30 grandchildren and 24 great- grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his brothers, Ervin Warneke of Christina, Mont., Elmer Warneke of Lewistown, and Norman Warneke of Worland, Wyo.; and sisters, Emma Lou Peterson of Lewistown and Marion Jarussi of Lewiston, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lew lived his life in the shadow of the cross and was unwavering in his personal faith in Jesus Christ. This faith was the springboard of all of his words and actions. He was honest, determined, practical, and loved people. His material possessions of importance were few: his Bible, saddle, gun, mandolin, boots, his Stetson, and some good books. The land that he accrued by his hard work had his name on the deed, but he viewed himself as a humble steward; his land and his possessions were the Lord's. His family and relationships were tremendously important to him. He has made a profound impact on his family and the hundreds of people who paths crossed his.
Lew was a cowboy, stockman, author of two books, and stayed 100per cent engaged in life until the end. He was a charter member of the Faith Chapel in Harlowton (Assembly of God), Gideons, Kiwanis, and Wheatland County Stockgrowers. Memorials may be sent to the Faith Chapel Building Fund, Box 203, Harlowton, MT 59036 or the Gideons International, Box 393, l.ewistown, MT 59457.
