RONALD F. LEATHERBERRY
BRIDGER — Ronald F. “Ronnie” Leatherberry, 77, went to be with Our Lord on Dec. 23, 1999 after a short illness.
Ronnie was born June 4, 1922 in Greenwood, Wis. He came to Montana in 1947, where he met the love his life, Dorothy Kowis. They were married June 22, 1949. Ronnie farmed and worked construction all of his adult life.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Bridger; his children, Donna and Mark Darkenwald of Park City, Jim and Jane Leatherberry of Edgar. Dan and Sally Leatherberry of Yakima, Wash., Tom and Vikkie Leatherberry of Billings, Guy and Debbie Leatherberry of Bridgewater, S.D., Chester Leatherberry of Billings and Ede and Kim Bauwens of Fromberg; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his two sisters, Norma (Dick) Roessler of Arden Hills, Minn., and Maxine (Buck) Dorman of Beloit, Wis.
Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel is in charge of arrangements.
ELEANOR J. OTTERO
DENVER — Eleanor J. Ottero was born Sept. 21, 1922, and died Dec. 22, 1999.
Eleanor enjoyed coming to Red Lodge every summer since she married Remo Ottero.
Survivors include her husband, Remo, of Commerce City, Colo.; sons Jack of Westminster, Colo., Richard of Denver and Michael (Alice) of Payson, Ariz., and a daughter, Jean (Andrew) Skeens of Fort Collins, Colo. She also is survived by 12 granddaughters, two great-granddaughters and one great-grandson.

RICHARD “DICK” SIPES
FROMBERG — A memorial for Richard “Dick” Sipes, 78, of Fromberg, is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30 at the United Methodist Church of Fromberg.
Cremation or Funeral Gallery of Billings is handling arrangements.
EDWARD "ED" KAUFMAN
FROMBERG — Edward Michael Kaufman died peacefully at his home in Fromberg on December 29, 1999 surrounded by his wife and many family members. Ed was born at Lefor, N. Dak. on September 23, 1926, the son of Peter and Elizabeth Kaufman. He was raised on a farm in the Lefor area. Ed met his sweetheart, Mary Kathrein, his wife of 52 years, while she was teaching school in North Dakota.
Ed served his country in the Army during World War II. Following his military service, Ed and Mary were married on September 23, 1947. They farmed in North Dakota until moving to Laurel, Mont. in 1956, where he held several different jobs over the years. The family moved to Fromberg in 1963, where he lived until the time of his death.
Ed was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents, Peter and Elizabeth Kaufman; and a brother, Carl Kaufman. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kathrein Kaufman, devoted and loving wife of 52 years; nine children; thirty grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His children and their families include Evelyn (Dan) Hall, Bob Kaufman, Carol (Harvey) Nott, Ken (Elizabeth) Kaufman, Donna (Dale) Oe, Curt (Tammy) Kaufman, Edward (Vicki) Kaufman, Jr., Doug (Shirley) Kaufman, and Arnie (Deanna) Kaufman. His surviving brothers and sister are Peter (Hilda) Kaufman, Mary (John) Wegh and Elven (Kathy) Kaufman. Ed's greatest joy in life was his wife and family.
Cremation has taken place. A vigil service will be held Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fromberg. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Rite of Committal in Rockvale Cemetery. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Clark's Fork Ambulance, Bridger, Mont. or to the charity of one's choice.
ART AMUNDSEN
JOLIET — Arthur “Art” Amundsen of Joliet, 82, passed away at his home Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 of natural causes.
He was born Oct. 30, 1917 to Mable and Martin Amundsen on the family farm along the banks of the Yellowstone near Joliet. In 1942 he joined the Army and served in the Philippines, receiving the bronze star for bravery. Upon returning home, he married Lillian McCready on Nov. 24, 1945. They recently celebrated their 54th anniversary.
Art was a master craftsman in the carpentry field, and was a longstanding member of the Carpenter’s Union. He was also a member of the Joliet V.F.W. and the Joliet Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; his son, Arthur, and his wife, Pat; a granddaughter, Jill; a grandson, Jeff; a brother, Cliff Amundsen of Joliet, and three sisters, Florence Mennie of Billings and Bea Giambastiani and Helen Kraychir, both of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Cindra Rei, and two sisters, Eleanor Weidinger and Martyn Mayberry.
Services will be held Jan. 6 at the Joliet Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Kayla Amundsen Cancer Fund, c/o the Laurel Federal Credit Union, or to a charity of choice.

CHARLES R. “CHUCK” JOHNSON
RED LODGE — Charles R. “Chuck” Johnson, 94, of Red Lodge, formerly of Billings, died early Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000 in Cedar Wood Villa.
Born in Glendive on Nov. 14, 1905, he was one of 11 children born to Charles and Sophie Johnson. When he was several days old, his mother wrapped him in a buffalo robe, laid him at her feet on warmed stones in the sleigh, and drove them back to the family homestead on Belle Creek.
Chuck graduated from Dawson County High School in Glendive when he was 16. He graduated from Montana Normal School in Dillon, and taught in Shelby when he was nineteen.
He returned to college at Montana State University in Bozeman where he completed an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in botany. His experiments in plant soil deficiencies led to the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers by the Anaconda Company.
On June 11, 1931 he married Bonita Worthington in Billings.
Mr. Johnson taught at Livingston before beginning a 34-year career with the Great Western Sugar Company. He served in field and managerial positions with Great Western in Billings, Scottsbluff, Neb., Denver and Lovell, Wyo. Chuck and his wife settled in Red Lodge two years ago.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bonita W. Johnson of Red Lodge; two daughters, Mary Ellen Mangus (Doyle) of Red Lodge and Nancy J. Northcutt (Ray) of Leadville, Colo.; one sister, Mildred “Sis” Dalsasso (Fred) of Glendive; two brothers, Earl Johnson of Glendive and Ray Johnson (Velma) of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Charles R. Mangus (Lisa) of Douglas, Wyo., Christine Hamann (Jerry) of Laramie, Wyo., Marci Dye (Mike) of Red Lodge, Robin Shelton (Gregg) of Strasburg, Colo., and Eric Northcutt (Jenny) of Estes Park, Colo.; ten great-grandchildren, Jessica and Ben Mangus, Margo and Max Hamann, Eric Dye, Shelby and Brian Shelton, and Daniel, Michael and Nicholas Northcutt, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family memorial services will be held at a later date. The Olcott Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.
RICHARD DORAN
FORSYTH — At the age of 85, Richard Doran, formerly of Red Lodge, died at the Rosebud Community Health Care Center in Forsyth. Mr. Doran died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000. He was born on October 4, 1914 in Red Lodge, the son of George and Mary (Barrett) Doran. Richard graduated from Red Lodge High School.
On Oct. 5, 1949, Richard was united in marriage to Madge Woodruff in Red Lodge. Together they raised seven children. Madge died in 1981.
He joined the U.S. Army, which was his career, working as an X-Ray Technician. Retiring to Roberts, MT, on March 31, 1971. They lived in Roberts until he moved to Forsyth in 1985 to be cared for by his loving daughter, Madge.
Richard’s life revolved around his family.
Survivors include his daughters, Madge and her husband Robert Payovich and their children, Darci, Paula & Jarrad of Forsyth, Marilyn Packard and her children Frank & Eric of Billings, Mary Doran of Corpus Christi, Tex.; three stepsons, Allen Caraveau of Powell, Wyo., Andy Caraveau and his wife Rose of Bakersfield, Calif., Archie Caraveau and his wife Barbara of Forsyth; grandson, Richard Jakkola of Elko, Nev. and granddaughter, Andrea Jakkola of Spokane, Wash. Other survivors include one sister, Jenny and her husband John Russell of Roseburg, Ore.; 10 step-grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Madge and his daughter, Margaret (Patty) Jakkola.
Funeral services will be at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge, Thursday, 1 p.m., Jan.13, 2000. Interment will be in Red Lodge Cemetery with a reception to follow interment at Dahl Funeral Chapel Hospitality Room.
DUANE EDWIN ROWE
HELENA — Duane Edwin Rowe, 28, of Helena, passed away Dec. 13, 1999 at his home.
Duane was born June 3, 1971 in Butte along with his twin brother, Darryl, to Loyd and Bonnie Rowe. He graduated from Capital High School in 1989. In March of 1991 he moved to Tulsa, Okla. and later graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics. He worked for Lowrance Electronics as an assembler.
Duane was preceded in death by his grandfather, Edwin Joki, his uncle, Harvey Joki and his grandfather Harold Millar.
He is survived by his wife, Tanara Rowe and his sons, Kyle and Kolten Rowe; his mother, Bonnie McFarland of Helena; his dad, Loyd Rowe of Helena; his twin brother, Darryl Rowe of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Dustin Rowe of Bozeman; sister and brother-in-law, April and Bobby Garrett of Tulsa, Okla.; nieces Allyson Rowe of Broken Arrow and Andrea Garrett of Tulsa; grandmother Suoma Joki of Helena; grandmother and grandfather Loyd and Bess Rowe of Butte; grandmother Roberta Harrison of Tulsa; aunt and uncle Debbie and Marvin Horne of Missoula, aunt Norma Joki of Roberts, his parents-in-law, Robert and Saundra Harrison of Tulsa, and numerous cousins.
Duane was a real respected man by his family and friends. He loved his sons and thought they were the apples of his eyes. Duane will be missed and loved by everyone with whom he came into contact.
Services were held Friday, Dec. 17 at the First Assembly of God Church in Helena, under the direction of Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.
