Victor "Shorty" Soens Jr., 72, of Billings, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Parkview Convalescent Center.

CODY, Wyo. - Nancy L. Miller, 60, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at her home.

CODY, Wyo. - Georgia W. Laxson, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Wapiti Valley Church with interment at 4 p.m. in the Valley cemetery. Ballard Funeral Home is in charge.
Arnold Kjelgaard
WOLF POINT - Arnold Kjelgaard died Nov. 3, 1999, in Wolf Point.
Arnold was born in Wolf Point on May 12, 1931, the last child to John and Esther (Pederson) Kjelgaard. He was raised on the homestead in northern McCone County. Arnold worked on various farms and ranches until 1953, when he bought his first farm with the help of his father and brother, Harold.
On Oct. 9, 1954, he married
Hazel Flaten in Ray, N.D. Together they raised a daughter and a son.
Arnold was a member of the First Lutheran Church and served on the council for many years. He also served on the Farmers Union Lumber Board for 25 years, was the clerk of the Turner School district, and served as an election clerk.
Arnold considered himself privileged to live in, as he called it, "The Great Prairie Elk Valley." He truly lived his life on the farm and the events surrounding it. Each spring was looked at with renewed anticipation. The fall and winter months were filled with following his three grandchildren in their sporting events and he became a true Culbertson sports fan. He loved to socialize and looked forward to coffee time.
Survivors include his wife of the Prairie Elk Community south of Wolf Point; daughter, Kris and Bert Steppler and children, Verlin, Cody, and Lori of rural Culbertson; son, David and Sylvia of the family farm south of Wolf Point; two brothers, Orville of Federal Way, Wash., and Harold of Wolf Point; three sisters, Ellen Long of Fort Benton, Marie Louise Vaughan of Charlo, and Ruth Miller of Larimore, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margaret Tande.
Visitations will be held on Friday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Clayton Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the First Lutheran Church in Wolf Point with Rev. Timothy Whiteman of Wolf Point officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Elk cemetery.
Kenneth Watson
MILES CITY - Kenneth Watson, 66, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, in the family lot in the MacIntosh cemetery, McIntosh, S.D.
Karen Frances Miller
TIMBER LAKE, S.D. - Karen Frances Miller, of Timber Lake, died on Oct. 29, 1999, in Rapid City. Karen was born at Fort Yates, N.D., on Sept. 22, 1946, to William W. Miller Sr. and Martina Medicine Miller. Karen was enrolled with Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and was a treaty member of the Piegan (Blackfoot) Band of Brocket, Alberta, Canada.
Karen attended elementary school at Stephen Indian School in Chamberlain. She attended and graduated high school from the American Indian Arts School in Santa Fe, N.M. Karen completed business school at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She also completed law enforcement training at United Tribes Educational Technical Center, Bismarck, N.D. Karen graduated from Mary College in Bismarck with a bachelor of arts degree in social work. She was enrolled in the Lakota Management/Leadership Program, master of arts with Oglala Lakota College, Kyle, and master of arts program, University of South Dakota.
Karen worked as an addiction counselor in the field of alcohol/drug with tribal youth and adult treatment facilities within Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota. She served as an alcohol/drug consultant in Alaska and Canada. She was a co-founder of the Owayawa School in Chicago. She enjoyed skiing, bowling, beading, sewing and her grandchildren.
Karen is survived by her father, William W. Miller Sr. of Wakpala; her two sisters, Mary Ann Miller of Timber Lake and Claudia Miller Cournoyer of Colstrip, Mont.; and four brothers, William W. Miller Jr. of Rapid City, James Miller of Porcupine, Milo Miller of Timber Lake, and George Miller of Wakpala; her children, Travis C. Crowshoe of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, Anna-Sophia Crowshoe Winneshiek of Timber Lake, Jessica Marie Crowshoe Winneshiek of Bismarck, and Tyrone Crowshoe of Timber Lake; also her eight grandchildren, Cassandra, Khan, Devon, Dennis Ty, Nicholas, Delisa, Leilla-Sophia, and Noah. preceded in death by her mother, Martina Medicine Miller.
Wake services began Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Community Center in Timber Lake. On Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, services will begin at 10 a.m. (MST) and burial will be held at the St. Theresa Catholic cemetery in White Horse.
Arrangements are with Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Edward Sund
Edward Sund died on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, after a short illness. He was born on Jan. 6, 1909, to Hans E. and Hilma Marie (Magnusson) Sund in Leeds, N.D. He served his country during WW II as a member of the 466th Quartermasters Regiment and the 3604 Quartermasters Truck Company. His company saw action during the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, he worked as a farmer and then as a truck driver for Gamble-Skogmo for many years. In 1967, he married
Lauretta Wilson Metz. She preceded him in death in 1994. Edward was a member of the Moose and the American Legion. He loved fishing, downhill skiing, camping, traveling, and playing cards and shuffleboard with his friends. He once traveled to Europe to ski.
Edward is survived by his sister, Edith Lamoureux of Torrance, Calif., five nieces, three nephews, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at 10 a.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel, Billings. Interment will follow at Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Helen K. Wolf
Helen K. Wolf, 92, of Billings, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999. She was born in Hoboken, N.J., on Feb. 11, 1907, the daughter of Otto and Olga Kaufmann.
Helen was an elementary grade teacher when she married
Henry H. Wolf on Dec. 31, 1930. Henry worked for the Dupont Company, and in 1938 the family moved to Newark, Del. In 1965, Henry retired and he and Helen moved to Venice, Fla.
Upon Henry's death in February of 1991, Helen moved to Billings to be with her family. She enjoyed her life with family and friends here in Billings. She loved her house and garden, bridge with her friends, and painting. Helen's generous and positive spirit blessed many, and she will be greatly missed. We love you Oma.
Helen is survived by her two sons, Fritz Wolf of Philadelphia and Carl Wolf and his wife, Carol of Billings; and her two granddaughters and their families, Paige Legare, her husband, Dave, and daughters, Katie, Morgan, and Riley of Billings, and Sara Johnson, her husband, Brad, and daughter, Grace of Lafayette, Colo.
A memorial service to celebrate Helen's life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Faith Chapel. Memorials may be sent to Faith Chapel, 517 Shiloh Rd., Billings, MT 59102. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
Gladys Boyce
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Gladys Boyce, 84, Sidney, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Church of Nazarene, Sidney, with Pastor James D. Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Richland Memorial Park, Sidney, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Gladys died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center-Extended Care Facility.
Gladys is survived by her sons: George Boyce and wife, Shirley, Sidney; Fred Boyce and wife, Mary, Sidney; Robert Boyce and wife, Kathy, Bozeman; Richard Boyce and wife, Pam, Angleton, Texas; and Donald Boyce and wife, Carrie, Rapid City, S.D.; sister, Phyllis Gray, Sidney; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Don Muggli
MILES CITY - Don Muggli, age 84, of Miles City, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at the Friendship Villa Care Center in Miles City.
Don was born on Sept. 18, 1915, in Richardton, N.D., the son of Joseph and Barbara (Schmidt) Muggli. He attended grade school at Rosebud and the Urseline Convent in Miles City. He graduated from Custer County District High School. Following graduation, he worked construction for two years for Max Van Buskerk and for Standard Oil Bulk Station as a delivery driver.
In 1941, he returned to the family farm. On Feb. 14, 1942, Don and Mavis Merz were united in marriage in Helena. In 1956, he and three brothers, Greg, Luke, and Tom, bought the farm from his father. He worked on the farm until he retired in 1992.
Don was an active member of the Sacred Heart Parish, secretary of the Tongue and Yellowstone Irrigation District, and served at the parish council.
Don is survived by two sons: Roger Muggli and his wife, Carla and Steve Muggli and his wife, Gayle, all of Miles City; four daughters: Patricia Hettinger and her husband, Dale of Merino, Calif.; Rene Sandretto of Red Lodge; Ruth Franks and her husband, Gerry of Spokane, Wash.; and Marian Killen and her husband, Jim of Ault, Colo.; four brothers: Hugo Muggli and his wife, Cecelia of Tongue River Stage; Francis Muggli and his wife, Carolin of Glasgow; Luke Muggli and his wife, Georgia of Miles City; and Tom Muggli of Miles City; three sisters: Anna Mae Miller and her husband, Bud of Manhattan; Lorraine Kaiser of Miles City; and Sister Agatha Muggli of Bismarck, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Lylene Morland of Miles City; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mavis in 1996; two brothers, Arthur and Gregory; and a son-in-law, Brent Sandretto.
Vigil services will be held on Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Gil Hemauer-Capuchin celebrant. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Calvary cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas William Spieler
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Mr. Thomas William Spieler, 79, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.
Born Oct. 25, 1920, in Thief River Falls, Minn., the son of the late Jacob Joseph and Anna Gruber Spieler, he spent his formative years in Billings, Mont. Thomas was a graduate of Billings High School and a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. Mr. Spieler retired from Armour and Co., where he was a plant engineer, after 39 years of service.
As well as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, Thomas was an avid reader and gardener.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Crosby Spieler; a son, Mark Spieler and wife, Karen of Charlotte; a daughter, Louise Spieler and husband, Keith King of Marshall; one sister, Kathryn Forsman of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Kathryn and Jake Spieler of Charlotte, and Daniel Spieler-King of Marshall.
The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 5, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the home, 2130 Stonewood Dr. A Memorial Service is private.

Irvin M. Steinberg
SIDNEY - Irvin M. Steinberg, 50, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel in Minot, N.D., with interment in the Minot Hebrew cemetery.
Peggy Lou 'Rosie' Polson
BAKER - Peggy Lou "Rosie" Polson, age 83 of Baker, formerly of Hardin, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.
She was born May 17, 1916, at Salina, Kan., the daughter of James and Bessie Harvill. She grew up in an orphanage in Kiowa, Kan., and Barttlesville, Kan., where she received her schooling. Peggy was adopted by Ira and Madeline Blazier. At the age of 16, she moved with her parents to the North Valley near Hardin. She later moved to St. Xavier where she worked for Mrs. Robins as a cook and housekeeper.
On Nov. 23, 1936, she was married
to Clarence Polson at Hardin. Together, they farmed, ranched and raised their family. They moved into St. Xavier where they purchased the Rice cafÈ and later named it Peg's CafÈ. In 1972, they sold the cafÈ and moved into Hardin. After retiring, Peg still worked as a hostess at the Stockman's Restaurant and later was an assistant manager of the Little Big Man Pizza. After the death of Clarence in 1984, she moved to Seattle where she made her home. She later moved to Baker, where she had made her home since.
She enjoyed crocheting and sewing and was known for being an outstanding cook and raising large gardens. She especially loved and enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: a son, Raymond "Jim" Polson of Auburn, Wash.; two daughters: Barbara Olind and her husband, George of Baker, and Carol Williams and her husband, John of Boise, Idaho; 11 grandchildren: Casey, Joene, Wendy, Lynette, Rich, Jennifer, Tammy, Shawn, Kim, Jeff and Shelly; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence in 1984; a daughter, Joan Wicks; three brothers: James, Charles and Bill; and two grandchildren: Jim and Terry.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Hardin. Burial will follow in the family lot of the Fairview cemetery in Hardin. Stevenson's Funeral Home of Baker is in charge of the arrangements.
Clara Elizabeth Morgan Sines
Clara Elizabeth Morgan Sines, of Billings, passed from this life peacefully Nov. 3, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital. She was 86.
Clara was born in Hiteman, Iowa, on Dec. 16, 1912, to Joseph and Alta Gathercole Morgan. She married
James Allen Sines on Jan. 26, 1933, and was later sealed in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. Making their home in Rock Springs, Wyo., Clara spent many years as a supervising cook at the Sweetwater Memorial Hospital in Rock Springs.
Clara is survived by her four children: Keith Sines and his wife, Ruth of Salt Lake City; Sherry Lakko of Billings; Dorothy Hacker and her husband, Patrick of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Robert Sines and his wife, Wendy of Oak Harbor, Wash. Survivors also include her sisters, Louise Thrall of La Mesa, Calif., and Jane Shelton of Rock Springs, as well as 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, including several nieces and nephews.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Roy Morgan; and her son-in-law, Robert Lakko.
Funeral services will be held at the Wicks Lane LDS Chapel, 1000 Wicks Lane, at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1999. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Rock Springs. Viewing will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Smith Downtown Chapel and prior to services at the church.
