MARY R. SPELMAN
Mary R. Spelman died Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at the Beartooth Hospital & Health Center in Red Lodge, MT. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and her son, Jimmy, her parents and one sister, Patty Clark.
Mary, born July 2, 1921 in Great Falls, MT to Edmund and Ruth Ryan, was the middle of their three daughters. The family moved to Billings when Mary was a young girl. She attended Billings schools and the University of Montana.
On July 19, 1941, Jim and Mary Spelman were married at St. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral in Billings. At the end of WWII, the couple returned to Montana, living the majority of the next 25 years in Billings. When Jim retired they moved to Red Lodge to enjoy a wonderful 20 years of “retirement.”
Mary volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital most of the years she lived in Billings and that work continued until 5 years ago. She was active in the Red Lodge Chapter of P.E.O. And as a member of St. Agnes Parish, she was a Eucharistic minister and member of the Altar Society. Mary was a charter member of the Carbon County Arts Guild and loved her weekly sessions with the “painted ladies” of Red Lodge. Mary’s watercolors were accepted into many juried art shows where she won several awards. She loved bridge and was a member of two local bridge clubs.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Lynne and son-in-law, Dan Dutton of Belfry, her son, Michael and daughter-in-law Vickie of Seattle, WA, her sister, Polly Hagen of Glasgow, her grandchildren, Lisa, Jim, Trevor and Megan, and her great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Connor, Thomas, Lauren, Sophie and Anna, several nieces and nephew, and numerous, very special, friends.
The Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Church of Red Lodge on Saturday, February 8, 2003. Memorials may be directed to the Mary Spelman Youth Art Endowment, Carbon County Art Guild and Depot Gallery, PO Box 585, Red Lodge, MT 59068. Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements.
KATHERINE F. MARCHELLO
Katherine “Kiki” F. Marchello, 93, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at Beartooth Hospital and Health Care Center in Red Lodge, Montana where she had resided since 1998.
Kiki was born Oct. 2, 1909 and lived her entire life in Red Lodge. On June 24, 1944 she married Mario Marchello. They owned and operated the Marchello Hardware Store. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and Italian Victory Girls.
Kiki was preceded in death by her husband, Mario, in 1974, her grandson, Steve Marchello, in 1999, and two sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mario and Franci Marchello of Centennial, Colo.
A Vigil Service was held Feb. 4, 2003 at the Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held Feb. 5, 2003 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with burial in the Red Lodge Cemetery.
Dahl Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of arrangements.

LILLIAN MCCREADY AMUNDSEN
Lillian McCready Amundsen, 82, of Joliet, passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 30, 2003, at Evergreen Laurel from natural causes.
She was born on the family farm near Joliet, on December 29, 1920, the second of four daughters to George (Barney ) and Blanche McCready. She attended school in Joliet, excelling in basketball. After graduation, during the war years, she worked for the AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Administration) Office in Joliet.
On November 24, 1945, Lillian was united in marriage to Art Amundsen. They spent their married life in Joliet. Their marriage was blessed with two children – Arthur Martin and Cindra Rei. Lillian had two grandchildren; Jill and Jeff, who were very special to her. Countless hours were spent making mud pies, riding bikes and playing cards. We often joked that if those grandkids set the curtains on fire, Lillian would grab the camera!
Lillian was a life long and very active member of the Joliet Christian Church. She loved to bowl and was involved in league play in Joliet, Bridger and Laurel. She spent many years as Clerk of the Joliet School Board and as City Clerk in Joliet.
On March 3, 1998, she moved to Evergreen Laurel, due to complications of Alzheimer’s. The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen for her excellent care.
Lillian is survived by her son, Arthur and his wife, Pat; granddaughter, Jill, grandson, Jeff, two sisters: Roberta Stene of Joliet, and Doris (Bill) Koski of Billings, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art, her daughter Cindra Rei, a sister Edna Mae Young and her parents.
We love you Mom, Grandma. We know you are at peace.
Services were held Tuesday, February 4 at Joliet Christian Church. Interment will be in the Joliet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Joliet Senior Citizens Building Fund, the Joliet Ambulance Service or the charity of your choice.
LOUISE HUNTINGTON
At age 73, Louise Huntington of Red Lodge died peacefully at Cedar Wood Villa early Wednesday morning, May 28, 2003. Louise was born May 25, 1930 in Powell, Wyo. the daughter of Albert and Lottie (Moore) Burgener. She attended schools in Powell, Wyo. and went on to earn her nursing and accounting degrees from Eastern Montana College.
On August 9, 1952, Louise was united in marriage to Burt Huntington in Lovell, Wyo. She worked in nursing positions in Laramie, Lovell and Billings; worked with Burt at the Lovell and Red Lodge newspapers; and worked as a bookkeeper for Rocky Mountain Industries for many years.
Louise was a devout Catholic and a devoted member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Her loss will be felt deeply in the church and community. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting but mostly relished her time serving in the church.
Louise leaves behind her son Ted and his wife Michelle; her grandchildren Renee and Seth all of Wasilla, Alaska; her sisters, Dorothy Lee (Vance) Larkin of Cody, Wyo., Bonnie (Hank) Hartley of Winter Haven, Fla., Willa Mae (Jim) Fleming of Powell, Wyo.; and her brothers, Tom (Carolyn) Burgener of Elizabeth, Colo., and Ken (Vallie) Burgener of Anchorage, Alaska.
Her husband Burt, preceded her in death in 1997.
A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, May 31, 2003 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Red Lodge. Cremation has taken place and Louise’s ashes will be scattered by the family at a later date. Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial may be made in Louise’s name to the Montana Alzheimer’s Association, 3010 11th Ave. No., Billings, MT 59101.
CANADA WILLIAM “TEX” PAYOVICH
ROBERTS - Canada “Tex” Payovich, 17, died Monday May 26, 2003. Canada was born on Apri1 28, 1986 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of John and Laura Payovich. He moved with his family in 2001 to the state that he loved — Montana. He attended Roberts High School where he warmed the hearts of every student with his Texas accent and great sense of humor, gaining friends too numerous to count. He loved all sports, especially football. His mom was his biggest fan, as she cheered the Rockets on to victory.
Canada was big hearted and lived life to the fullest. He went after life as if it were something that had to be roped before it got away. He loved to hunt and ride around in trucks with his buddies, to ride horses and help neighbors in need. Little children were drawn to his fun-filled, caring personality.
He is survived by his parents, John and Laura, and brother Cody of Roberts. Other siblings include Sarah and John Payovich of Nebraska, Melanie (Larry) Short, and Jenny Miller and families. Surviving grandparents are Bill and Dorothy Register of Lufkin, Texas, and Faye and Jim Allen of Roberts. He is also survived by aunts Theresa (Roy Lee) Lyles, Billie Jo Riley, Debbie (Chris) Holcomb, Bev (Edwin) Draper, Darlene Payovich, and Arlene (Bob) Lentz; and numerous cousins, great aunts and uncles. “We love you, Canada, & we are proud of you.”
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2003 at the Roberts School Gymnasium, with cremation following the service. Visitation was Saturday May 31, at Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Memorials may be made to the Roberts School for the Kenny DeVries Scholarship Fund.
D. HELEN SIGMUNDSTAD
BALLANTINE – D. Helen Sigmundstad, formerly of Joliet and Roberts, died at her home near Ballantine on Saturday, May 31, 2003. She was born in Delphia, Mont. to parents Agnes Havemann Hardy and William James Hardy on June 7, 1918. She moved to and lived in the Myers and Peasebottom area for the first 14 years moving to Huntley, Mont. as a sophomore in high school. She graduated from Huntley Project High School in 1935 as valedictorian and attended Eastern Montana Normal School receiving a teaching certificate. She taught in Townsend and in a small country school in Hailstone Basin near Rapelje.
Helen married Selmer “Sig” Sigmundstad in 1939. They lived in Billings until moving to Joliet in Dec. 1946 and then to the Boyd area in 1961. “Sig” preceded Helen in death in 1998 and she continued living in their home until November of 2002 when she moved to Ballantine to live near her daughter.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Doris (Buck) Baldry of Ballantine; grandchildren, John Lindsey, Leona (Jason) Svancara and great grandson Ty Svancara; her son, Dave (Lela) Sigmundstad of Circle; grandchildren, Rafe (Michelle) Sigmundstad, Jason Sigmundstad and Erin Sigmundstad; great grandchildren, Rachel and Blake Sigmundstad. She also leaves many in her daughter’s new family that she loved and was loved by in return; she was also “Grandma Sig” to many of them. Helen also leaves behind her best friend, “Sylver”.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, “Sig”, her infant son, Richard Alvin and brother, James Wilbur Hardy.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at Rockvale Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
SAMUEL ADAM GRASSMAN
Funeral services for Samuel Adam Grassman, 18, of Era, Texas, were held May 12 in Denton, Texas, with the Rev. Scott Sundbye officiating. Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, Texas under the direction of the DeBerry Funeral Directors.
Mr. Grassman died May 7, 2003 at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
He was born June 26, 1984 in Billings, Mont. to Jack Lee Grassman and Katherine Lynn Lehman Grassman. He was a graduate of Era High School, Class of 2002. Sam was employed at Lemons Texaco in Era and Firestone Tires in Denton.
Sam is survived by his parents, Jacky and Kathy Grassman of Era; a brother, Cory Grassman of Era, and grandparents, Leroy and Ellen Grassman of Spokane, Wash. and Dean and Pauline Lehman of Laurel.
Pallbearers were Steven Taylor, Colby Murrell, Chancie Graves, Shane Britton, Brad Shefler and Chad Simpson. Honorary pallbearers were Gilbert Romero and H.T. Crenshaw.
