Renee Angelo Smith

Renée Angelo Smith, 55, of Bozeman, was born Aug. 16, 1946, in the Portuguese colony of Macao, (located some 60 miles from Hong Kong) on the coast of China, the eldest daughter of Irmalinda and Reinaldo Angelo.

She was raised in Macao by her parents, where she graduated from the Canossion College of Macao, a Catholic high school for girls teaching most classes in English (students were expected to be already fluent in Portuguese and Chinese). She developed into a skilled player of field hockey, and from that, evolved her interest in the Ice Dogs.

At the age of 21 she moved to Lisbon, Portugal, where she furthered her studies at the Berlitz School of Languages in Lisbon. Renée maintained her interest in languages, and was fluent in English, Portuguese, French and Chinese, and fairly proficient in German and Dutch.

During her stay in Portugal she accepted a summer job as nanny to a vacationing American family living in Belgium. At the end of the summer, the whole family was so delighted with her that they asked her to move to Belgium with them. In 1974 this American family was transferred back to the U.S.A., and Renee was supposed to move with them. Her visa was delayed and delayed.

Meanwhile, she was stranded in Belgium, with most of her clothes, books and records in California. She returned to Macao to stay for a year before returning to Belgium to find work. She was offered a job by the Smithsand has remained as a part of the Smith family ever since.

Renée's love of cooking (her uncle was one of Macao's foremost chefs), and her vast collection of cookbooks and cooking utensils from around the world, made her kitchen an attraction for many of her friends.

In 1988, Renée and Peter traveled to the United States and toured the Rocky Mountains, falling in love with Bozeman, its surroundings, and, most of all, its people. They bought a home here in 1990, moving permanently to Bozeman in 1993. Renée especially loved children of all ages. Other loves were cats and plants. She was an outstanding companion who loved travel, and she had close friends and family in many countries. Between visits, she kept in touch with them frequently by telephone.

She is survived by her husband Peter Smith of Bozeman; stepchildren David Hitchcock Smith and his wife Marianne of Brussels, Belgium, Laura Smith Shermer and her husband Scott of Chicago, Ill., Daniel S. Smith and his wife Melody of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Suzanne Batten Smith of Boulder, Colo., plus four grandchildren who graced her life.

In addition, she is survived by: her parents, and one sister who now live in Portugal. Her other sister lives in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

A celebration to honor Renée was held Monday, Nov. 12, 2001. Final services will be held Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, for the benefit of a few key relatives who were unable to attend the celebration of Nov. 12, after which cremation will take place.
