S. Keith Anderson
HELENA - S. Keith Anderson, chief executive of the Montana Taxpayers' Association in Helena for well over three decades, died at his home from cancer on Oct. 18, 1999. He was 75. Keith was a nationally recognized advocate of the concerns of taxpayers and main street business, being elected president of the National Taxpayers' Conference in Washington, D.C., and president of the Western States Taxpayers' Conference.
Long after his retirement in 1989 and well into the 1990s, Keith Anderson continued his support of these causes through the Montana Society of Association Executives, which he helped organize in the early 1980s. Acting on a pro bono basis from his home, he kept the association lively and viable, even as he took an active role in such organizations as the Pachyderm Club, Rotary Club, many aspects of Masonry including the Algeria Shrine, and Gates of the Mountains Boat Club, Green Meadow Country Club, and many others.
S. Keith Anderson's roots were deep in the ranch country of Central Montana. He was born in Lewistown on June 17, 1924, the only child of Oscar I. and Alma Savre Anderson. Oscar Anderson's family began ranching on Spring Creek near Lewistown in 1882.
As an only child and with no neighborhood children to play with, Keith was raised with adults, cow hands and occasional ranch visitors. His best friends were his dog, Jack, and a series of saddle ponies he rode around the ranch and to classes in a one-room log schoolhouse where 17-year-old Florence Duffy taught grades one through eight. Miss Duffy roomed at the Anderson ranch during her tenure and, in Keith Anderson's words, "taught me to read and write and think."
When Keith graduated from Lewistown High School in 1942, the country was at war. Keith enrolled at the University of Washington where he joined the ROTC student military training program. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in the summer of 1943, serving as an aerial gunner with B-17 and B-29 bomber groups.
After his discharge at March Field in 1946, Keith enrolled at the University of Montana at Missoula, where he earned a degree in business and political science with a minor in history and economics. With his graduation, Keith fulfilled one of two promises he had made to his father, Oscar: graduate from college and become a Shriner. The latter was to follow as Keith became a member of both the York and Scottish rites and a lifelong, enthusiastic member of the Algeria Shrine of Helena.
In his own words, the major event of Keith's college career was the day he met a co-ed named Carol Chaffin, a member of a pioneer Bitterroot Valley family. Carol, the pride of Keith's life, became Montana's first official Miss Montana in 1947, and Keith eagerly kept track of her activities at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, where she earned a scholarship allowing her to finish her college education.
The Andersons were married in a small church in Hamilton on Dec. 27, 1949. Keith and Carol taught classes at Alberton High School for a time before moving to the Anderson ranch on the Judith River.
When Keith's mother, Alma, died in 1953, his father agreed to sell the ranch and retire to Lewistown, where he lived until his death a decade later. Keith and Carol and their infant son, Craig, moved to Helena early in 1955 when a position as research assistant opened at the Montana Taxpayers' Association. Quickly acclimating himself to the work of the organization he was to serve for so long, Keith was soon named its Executive Secretary.
Keith's involvement with the work of MonTax, the shortened name he gave the Association, was total. His tireless work with the Legislature, at school budget meetings throughout the state and on the lecture circuit on behalf of the taxpayer and main street business is legendary and enduring.
Keith and Carol Anderson as a couple have made a lasting contribution to life in Helena, and their two sons, Craig and Eric, have continued the tradition in Billings, where they live with their families. Craig, a graduate of the University of Montana, is a CPA and CFP and is a Vice President of Merrill Lynch. He and his wife, Jane, have two sons, Chris and Chase. Eric, also a CPA, holds a law degree from the University of Montana and a master of law degree in taxation from New York University. He is a partner of the Crowley Law Firm. Eric and his wife, Dale, have a daughter, Alexis.
Services will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church in Helena at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999. Masonic graveside services will be held at the Lewistown cemetery at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, by Officers and Members, Friendship Lodge #37, A.F. & A.M. Hagler-Anderson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Algeria Shrine Temple, P.O. Box 1174, Helena, Mont. 59624-1174 or Plymouth Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 400 S. Oakes, Helena, Mont. 59601 or a charity of your choice.
