MINNIE M. CARLSON
Minnie M. Carlson died Friday, March 16, 2001 of natural causes at Billings Deaconess Hospital at the age of 92. Minnie was born Dec. 5, 1908 in Custer, the daughter of Sam and Henrietta Musser.
On Dec. 19, 1925, Minnie was united in marriage to Martin Carlson in Billings. Minnie and Martin started their marriage farming close to the Clarks Fork River, north of Belfry. In 1951, the family moved to Bridger, where they built the Marshall Wells Store. Martin died in 1986 and their son, Earl, died in 1979.
Minnie loved flowers and grew many beautiful roses. Grandma showed her love by cooking wonderful meals, and was known for her homemade chicken and noodles and her pies. She spent numerous hours hand-making quilts and knitting afghans. She was a member of the Bridger Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star in Bridger for over 50 years. Minnie was active in NuArt Club and Women’s Club of Bridger for many years.
Survivors include her daughter, Doris Lindeberg (Floyd) of Boulder City, Nev.; a son, Carl B. Carlson (Vera) of Billings; six grandchildren, Linda Lee Vigus (Jody) of Billings, Randy Carlson of Las Vegas, Nev., Beverly Bradshaw (Joel) of Seattle, Wash., Lori Aberg (Robert) of South Grafton, Mass., Shari Bonnet (Kevin) of Costa Mesa, Calif., Kristi Lindberg of Seattle, Wash., and three great-grandchildren, Danielle and Blake Bonnet and Nichols Aberg.
Funeral services were held March 20, 2001 at the Bridger United Methodist Church, with interment in the Bridger Cemetery.
Dahl Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Billings was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Bridger United Methodist Church.

MAGDALENA E. PETERS
Magdalena E. “Lena” Peters, 76, of Billings, passed away March 18, 2001 at home.
Magdalena was born to Felix and Matilda Ott on April 28, 1924 at Fromberg. Magdalena married Ralph Peters on June 24, 1940 at Red Lodge. They spent their lives farming in Bridger.
Magdalena liked gardening, and enjoyed her flowers and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Deanna (Ralph) Betcher of Livingston, Texas; two sons Ron (May) of Bridger and Gerald (Thellis) of Helena; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; three sisters, Tillie Smidt of Butte, Julia Herbert of Laurel and Anna Rekdal of Billings; four brothers, John (Eva) of Reed Point, Val (Frances) and Tony, both of Billings, and Mike (Delphine) of Fremont, Calif.
Magdalena was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Memorials are suggested to Big Sky Hospice in Billings.
Services were held Wednesday, March 21 at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel. Interment was in the Bridger Cemetery.

DOROTHY M. JAKKOLA
Dorothy M. Jakkola, 81, of Missoula, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001 at Village Health Care Center of natural causes.
She was born Sept. 29, 1919 in Terry, the daughter of Shepherd and Mabel (Nichols) Pomeroy.
Dorothy married Ed Jakkola on March 10, 1940 in Red Lodge. They remained in the Red Lodge and Joliet areas for the majority of their lives, moving to Missoula in 1997 to be closer to their children.
Some of Dorothy’s fondest memories were of the times spent with the women’s club in Joliet and with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Robert Jakkola, her great-grandson, Jesse Huguet, four brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ed Jakkola of Missoula; three daughters, Betty Vinion and husband Marvin of Missoula, Jeanie Fox of Missoula and Sharon Rust and husband Stan of Seattle, Wash.; her brother, Melvin Pomeroy and wife Bernice of Sterling, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Jakkola of Elko, Nev. and Nannette Jakkola of Los Olivos, Calif.; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 7 at Garden City Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorials be made in Dorothy’s name to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements were under the care and direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.

PHYLLIS MATHES
Phyllis Mathes, 87, of Red Lodge, passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2001 at Cedar Wood Villa Nursing Home where she had resided since suffering a stroke in 1995.
The daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (Dickinson) Philipson, Phyllis was born Nov. 10, 1913 at McLeod. She married August Mathes, Jr. on June 1, 1937, and they ranched near Big Timber until 1953 when they moved to the Mathes family ranch near Roberts.
Phyllis is survived by her husband; children Wanda (Earl) Lukkes of Lovell, Wyo., George (Mary Ann) Mathes of Roberts; grandchildren, Rodney (Tami) Lukkes of Lovell, Shane Mathes of Roberts, Johna (Tim) Zumbrun of Absarokee, and great-grandchildren, Chase and Cheylee Lukkes. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Jessie Soiland and Ethel McLaughlin.
Phyllis’ husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the delight of her life. She loved gardening and canning. She especially loved flowers. Phyllis made the best dinner rolls around, and they were expected at every family dinner or neighborhood picnic. Her passion was playing pinochle, and she truly loved the monthly card parties. She was a hard-working farm wife, milking cows and raising chickens and eggs to help make ends meet. She also worked at many other jobs during her life. She cleaned houses, was assistant cook at the Roberts School, and cooked for the young workers at the Red Lodge Canning Co.
Phyllis was one of the first employees at Cedar Wood Villa. She claimed she was “vaccinated with a ‘Go’ needle that took her everywhere, from grocery shopping to card parties to cross-country trips, and for the last six years she went anywhere the Cedar Wood Villa residents went.
Phyllis was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Big Timber and the T-Bone Cattlewomen.
Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge, with graveside services at the Big Timber Cemetery. Dahl Funeral Chapel of Red Lodge was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Roberts Community Foundation, P.O. Box 284, Roberts, MT 59070, or to a charity of one’s choice.

PATRICK ROBERT WEST
Patrick Robert West died July 7, 2001 in Mesa, Ariz.
He was born in Outlook, Mont. on Feb. 28, 1924.

WILLIAM S. LOSE
William S. “Bill” Lose, 73, of Billings, formerly of Bridger and Belfry, died Thursday morning, Dec. 13, 2001 at Aspen Meadows.
Bill was born in Belfry on April 8, 1928, a son of Paul G. and Nellie Lose. He was raised and educated in Belfry, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the Belfry area where he ranched for a number of years. He later worked for 15 years for Carbon County and the Montana State Highway Department before retiring.
On Oct. 22, 1955, Bill married Angeline Carrera in Red Lodge. Mrs. Lose died on June 17, 1997. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul “Bud” Lose, and one sister, Laura Grace Cadwell.
Mr. Lose was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include one daughter, JoAnne (Nick) Williams of Springfield, Va.; two sons, Sherman (Joan) Lose of Billings and Steve (Sheilah) Lose of Annandale, Va.; three grandchildren, Steven, Hayley and Hannah Lose; siblings Lorna Frandsen of Billings, Claris (Herman) Ungefug of Belfry, Helen (Leo) Eckhardt of Billings; Alden (Maxine) Lose of Billings, and Greta Leonard of Boulder City, Nev., and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece and her husband, Pat and Gary Hill of Bridger.
A memorial service was held Dec. 17 in Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. A luncheon followed at the Belfry Senior Citizen Center.
Memorials may be given to the Bridger Library or the Belfry Volunteer Fire Department.

ETTORE MARTIN MARCHELLO
Ettore Martin Marchello, of Red Lodge, died of natural causes Dec. 16, 2001 at the Bitterroot Valley Living Center in Stevensville.
Ed was born March 6, 1913 in Meaderville to John and Pierina Marchello. Ettore, known as Red by his friends, was the third of six children (Mario, Guido, Ed, Aldo, Bino and Minnie). He graduated from Carbon County High School in 1934, went into the Civilian Conservation Corps, and then worked at the Billings Bakery. He served on the Navy destroyer escort U.S.S. Aaron Ward III, damaged by five kamikazes within one hour during the naval battle for Okinawa. Ed was cook aboard ship until he was discharged. His cooking skills were well known, especially his bagna cauda.
Ed was married to Agnes Louise Petelin for 33 years; she died in 1974. Ed and Agnes raised four children with integrity and responsibility, all four achieving advanced degrees. The eldest, Dr. Martin J. Marchello, is a professor at North Dakota State University. Marilee Shockley, CPA, lives in Victor. Marcy Cameron, a teacher, lives in Powell Butte, Ore. Edith (Edee) Feild, vice president and controller of Phillips Ultrasound, lives in Snohomish, Wash.
Ed and his brothers ran a meat market and grocery store in Red Lodge for 45 years (Marchello’s IGA) where all of his children learned their work ethics.
Ed had an innate gift of massage that alleviated suffering in many people who knew about his skills. Although he might not remember a name, he never forgot a face, and would always give a hug. Ed was a volunteer fireman for the Red Lodge Fire Department for 25 years. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles, and a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Ed is survived by his brother, Bino, his four children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 18 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with burial in the Red Lodge Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

WILLIAM “BILL” SIMON LADVALA
William “Bill” Simon Ladvala, 86, of Roberts, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 of congestive heart failure.
Bill was born March 23, 1915 to Joel Ladvala and Senia Hunnakko in Gile, Wis. In 1918 the family moved to Red Lodge and later to Biwak, Minn. where Bill attended school until his sophomore year. He later graduated from Red Lodge High School. In 1941, Bill joined the Air Force and spent most of his military career in California and Alaska working as a radio operator on a troop carrier.
On Dec. 21, 1946, Bill married Salma Kahila in Red Lodge. The couple moved to California where Bill worked as a craftsman on a naval base. In 1948, they moved to Roberts and began a career in ranching.
Bill loved the mountains and being outdoors. His hobbies included Ham radio operation, fishing, hunting, fly-tying and hand-sewing of leather, and was well known for his smoked fish. Bill was also a leader for many years for 4-H, helping out in the horse, woodworking and dairy projects. Bill was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Knights of Kaleva.
Bill is survived by his wife, Salma, of Roberts, daughter Linda Ladvala of Roberts, sister May Nagel of Roberts, brother George (Barbara) Ladvala of Roberts, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Zeke, Abe and Tom; three sisters who died in infancy and a daughter, Barbara.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 5 at 1 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Cremation has taken place. A reception will follow services. Memorials may be made to the Roberts Community Fund, the Knights of Kaleva or a charity of one’s choice.
Dahl Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
