Lester Alweis
Lester Alweis, 86, died of natural causes at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999. He was born Dec. 2, 1912, to Joe and Jessie Alweis in Lewistown. He attended primary and high school in Lewistown and graduated at age 15. After graduating from Fergus County High in 1928, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning a degree from the Wharton School of Finance in 1932.
During the mid-1930s when the Fort Peck Dam was being built, Les returned to Montana. He and his brother Norman opened their first men's retail stores in Glasgow and Cut Bank. In 1936, Les returned to Lewistown to operate "The Hub" founded by his father.
On June 1, 1937, Les married Rosella Miller in Minneapolis. As newlyweds they settled in Lewistown. They shared 57 beautiful years until Rosella's death in 1994. After raising their children, Les and Rosella moved to Billings in 1965 to operate Jasons. From 1950 until 1980 Les, along with his brothers, Norm and Paul, participated in the management of seven stores - one in Dallas, two in Fort Worth, Texas, two in Louisville, Ky., and two stores in Montana.
Les, always an ardent supporter of his community, led a five-year community fund-raising campaign in the 1960s to build the Yogo Inn in Lewistown. The Yogo remains one of the major assets in the Lewistown area. He was president of the hotel board of directors until the late 1980s.
Simultaneously, he joined a group of Billings citizens who revitalized the Northern Hotel. As the president of the board, he helped guide the hotel management until its sale.
Les had a passion for dry fly fishing, growing roses, beautiful flowers, clean cars, cloth napkins, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach.
His family has always been the utmost importance to him. His devotion and love will always be remembered by family members: son, Don and wife, Ellen; daughter, Elaine Ziskind and husband, Joel; brother, Norman and wife, Shirley; brother-in-law, Alvin Miller and wife, Millie; grandson, Sheldon Alweis and wife, Tracy; granddaughters, Jody Alweis and Monica Ziskind; great-granddaughters, Hilary and Caitlin Alweis; two nieces, Peggy de la Morena and Janet Swadden. His brother, Paul, preceded him in death in 1965.
Personifying the word integrity, Les will be remembered by his family and friends as a true "gentle man" as well as a gentleman, one who has left a memorable impression with all who knew him. His life was centered around his family, his business and community, his religion, and generosity to others. He made an impact on those whose paths he crossed on his life's journey. His kindness, grace and dignity will last forever.
He was a member of the Al Bedoo Shrine, Scottish Rite, life member of the Elks, Petroleum Club, Yellowstone Country Club, and Congregation Beth Aaron.
