Pete and Beverly (Strouf) Metrovich
MONARCH - Pete and Beverly (Strouf) Metrovich passed away Sept. 3, 1999, at their cabin in Monarch.
Pete was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Arrowcreek, and graduated from high school at Stanford in 1944. He ranched and farmed in Judith Basin County, and married
Beverly Strouf on June 15, 1952. They worked and resided on their ranch and adopted three children in 1962: a daughter, Roxene, and then twin boys, Les and Larry. They retired and moved to the Monarch area where they spent their last remaining years, developing close relationships within the community.
Their love for each other and their granddaughter, Lani (Pu), was the focus of their lives. They were rarely apart in 47 years and their relationship with each other was uniquely close. They were people you could count on to be their if you needed them and will be remembered for their good qualities, especially their giving and loving natures.
Beverly was born on March 9, 1936, and was taken from us too soon. She had so many plans with her granddaughter, when Lani finished school, and was looking forward to everything. Beverly's wishes, as expressed to her granddaughter when her time came, was to be cremated, her ashes to be scattered in the wind at the cabin, because she couldn't think of a more wonderful place to be. Lani will comply with her wishes in a private time.
Pete was continually adamant throughout his life about not having funeral or memorial services held and his wishes will be respected.
Survivors include a daughter, Roxene Gillette and husband, Brian of Bozeman; two sons, Les and Larry Metrovich, both of Seattle, Wash.; Peggy Hess of Great Falls; Pat Lervold of Seattle; Truman and Pat Strouf of Billings; Mike Strouf of Miles City; Mary Reilly of Stanford; Louise Lemond of Lewistown; Irene Graden of McAllister; and Evelyn McVay of Kalispell; and three grandchildren.
It was requested by the family of Mr. and Mrs. (Strouf) Metrovich to include this story that was printed in the Great Falls Tribune on Sept. 6, 1999:
The daughter of a Monarch couple who died in a murder-suicide Friday said Sunday that she doesn't think her parents planned the tragic ending.
Peter Metrovich, 73, shot his 65-year-old wife, Beverly, twice at about 8 p.m., according to the Cascade County Sheriff's Department.
After delivering a note to a neighbor instructing him to call 9-1-1, Peter Metrovich went home and shot himself, authorities said.
The shootings occurred at the couple's log home south of Monarch. Authorities recovered a rifle and handgun at the scene.
Roxene Gillette, Bozeman, one of the Metrovich's three surviving children, said by telephone that her mother attempted to get away from Peter Metrovich.
Gillette said her father shot her mother in the back. He then retrieved another gun and shot her in the head.
"They had everything to live for in life, " said Gillette, who runs a small business in Bozeman. "I don't think there's an adequate explanation for the solution he chose. We all believe it was an act of momentary insanity."
Lt. Jim Bruckner of the Cascade County Sheriff's Department said Sunday that Metrovich left behind two letters.
One was to his granddaughter, Pualani Gillette, 16, who is Roxene Gillette's daughter. Neighbors and Gillette said the Metrovichs were deeply fond of Pualani Gillette, who had spent summers with the couple in past years.
A second letter Metrovich wrote, to his attorney, stated his reason for the shooting. Bruckner said he couldn't provide details. Roxene Gillette said she hadn't seen the letter.
Contrary to an earlier report, Bruckner said Metrovich did not write in the letter to his lawyer that the couple was having trouble with one of their three adult children which prompted the shootings.
Bruckner said Metrovich made references only to his wife.
"It was a problem between those two and a situation that had developed between those two, " Bruckner said.
Besides Roxene Gillette of Bozeman, the Metrovichs has two sons, Leslie and Lawrence Metrovich, both of Seattle.
Sheriff John Strandell said family members would be interviewed to see if they could help provide clues.
"We're just going to try and piece together the facts as best we can to determine why he did this, " Strandell said.
Autopsies were performed Saturday.
"It just seems unreal, " Harley Karlson, 74, a good friend and neighbor to the couple, said Sunday.
Karlson said he and his wife, Grace, met the couple about 10 years ago through their son, who did work for the Metrovichs. He put in their septic tank, planted trees and built their garage.
The Karlsons saw the Metrovichs almost daily. The Metrovichs delivered their morning newspaper. The two couples had dinners together and went on drives and trips.
Karlson said the Metrovichs always remembered birthdays and anniversaries.
Roxene Gillette said her parents has an unusually devoted relationship. Prior to moving to Monarch, they ranched in the Utica area.
On 6, 000 acres, the couple raised Hereford cattle and grew wheat and barley.
They adopted Gillette, who is 37 now, and her brother, Leslie and Lawrence, who are twins and also 37.
"I don't think we'll ever be able to say what happened, " Gillette said.
