Eula Hays Brewster Ebeling
FORT BENTON - Eula Hays Brewster Ebeling, 73, died at her home early Saturday morning, Sept. 11, 1999, from complications to an extended illness.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at 3:30 p.m., at the Fort Benton Methodist Church. A graveside service wilt be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at the Birney cemetery in Birney. A reception will follow the burial in Birney at the Quarter Circle U Ranch. Memorials are suggested to the Peace Hospice of Chouteau County. Benton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Eula was born Aug. 18, 1926, to George Warren and Marian Hays Brewster in Sheridan, Wyo. She grew up on a family ranch in Birney. She graduated from high school at Oddfields Academy in Maryland. Furthering her education, she received an English Literature degree from the University of Montana and also was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Eula taught elementary school in Birney two years before joining the Air Force in 1951, where she served as a Second Lt. until she returned home to work on the ranch. She married
Robert B. Ebeling Oct. 10, 1955, in Birney. In 1975 they moved to the Big Sag Ranch in Geraldine.
She was a member of the Birney Church, Montana Cowbelles and May Flower Society. Her hobbies included flower gardening, sewing, writing, and reading, however her pride and joy was her family.
She is survived by her husband of Fort Benton; two daughters, Mary Lou Tweet of Fort Benton and Tara Ana Malek of Highwood; a son, Rob Ebeling of Geraldine; two brothers, George W. Brewster of Evans, Colo., and Donald H. Brewster of Hansel, Colo.; five grandsons and one granddaughter.
Bernice M. Koss
MALTA - Bernice M. Koss, 94, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Phillips County Good Samaritan Center of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the Adams Memorial Chapel with interment in the Malta cemetery.
Goldie Niemi
LUTHER - Goldie Niemi, 78, Luther, died at Beartooth Hospital and Health Care Center Sept. 10, 1999. She was born in Columbus June 24, 1921, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Lukes) Harrison. Goldie attended Draper School and Carbon County High School, She married
William "Bill" Niemi Dec. 17, 1938, in a double wedding ceremony with Archie and Elsie (Niemi) Harrison. After their marriage they lived on the West Bench of Red Lodge. The spring of 1943, they moved to Luther, where they ranched and raised their family.
Goldie was the Luther School clerk. She served as election judge for many years. Goldie was a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Beartooth Women's Club, an active club in the 1940's. Goldie was a charter member of the Red Lodge BPO Does, and served as their president in 1966. She was also a member of the Cowbell's. Goldie loved to sew, knit, and crochet, but most of all she loved to travel.
Survivors include her son, Artie Niemi (Berna Jean) of Roy; three daughters, Kay Bauer (Dick) of Luther; Rita Klessens (Gary) of Nanton, Alberta, Canada; and Gale Taffner (Rack) of Wright, Wyo.; eight grandchildren, one step grandchild, and twelve great-grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Chupp of Billings; a brother George Harrison (Helen) of Boyd; and many nieces and nephews. Goldie will be missed by all.
Goldie was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents, and three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at the Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Monday. Franklin Buck Perez
FORT BELKNAP - Franklin Buck Perez, 17 years, died Saturday, September 10, 1999, the day before his 18th birthday, at his home at Fort Belknap. The cause of death is under investigation by the tribal police. The wake will start at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Ft. Belknap with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Harlem High School Gymnasium with burial in the Hi-Way Church cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Frank was born on Sept. 11, 1981, at Havre, the son of Randy and Margarett (Campbell) Perez. His Indian name (Hoksina Incago), means Growing Boy. He was raised and educated at Fort Belknap, and was a senior at Harlem High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, basketball, cross country and video games.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvina Buck Perez, Julian Perez and Michael "Bud" Campbell.
Survivors include his mother, Margarett Campbell of Poplar; father, Randy Perez of Ft. Belknap; sisters, Vernelle Chase, Reyna Perez, Jennifer Perez, all of Ft. Belknap; grandmother, Betty Campbell of Hays.
William Stanley Roberts
LEWISTOWN - William Stanley Roberts, 83, died Friday evening, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. He was born on April 3, 1916, at Lewistown, to Byron and Catherine (Miller) Roberts. William received his schooling at Suffolk, Lewistown and Winifred. He worked at the Fort Peck Dam in the C.C. Camp in the 1930's. He then ranched in the Suffolk area until retiring 10 years ago.
In 1936 he married
Margaret Ilke, they later divorced. On Sept. 29, 1949, he was united in marriage to Agnes Walton, they would have been married
50 years this Sept. 29th.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. At one time, he was an avid gun collector.
William is survived by his wife, Agnes Radtke Roberts of Lewistown; a son and daughter-in-law, William "Woody" and Tracy Roberts of the Hilger/Winifred area; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Boyd Shupe of Dugway, Utah; and a step son, Leroy Walton of Wishram, Wash. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services for William S. Roberts will be at the American Lutheran Church in Winifred on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at 2 p.m. Interment will be at the Winifred cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Winifred Ambulance Fund. Creel Funeral Home of Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.
Orpha I. Sandvold
CODY, Wyo. - Orpha I. Sandvold, 90, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at West Park Long Term Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at Christ the King Lutheran Church with interment in Riverside cemetery.
Claude See
POWELL, Wyo. - Claude See, 95, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with interment at Crown Hill cemetery.
Helen C. Snyder
WORLAND, Wyo. - Helen C. Snyder, 93, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Washakie Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the United Methodist Church with interment at Riverview Memorial Gardens cemetery. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge.
William Clark Summers
William Clark Summers, resident of Billings for the past 26 years, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 11, 1999, at the Evergreen Care Center in Billings with his wife, Margaret, at his side. He was born Oct. 28, 1909, in Beatrice, Neb., the son of William C. and Cora (Leigh) Summers.
He received his elementary education in a one-room country school and his high school training in Beatrice, graduating in 1926. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1933. He was a member of Sigma Tau, an honorary engineering society. Bill married
Doreen M. Bailey on Sept. 2, 1934, in Lincoln, Neb. He was employed two years as an engineer of the Texas Highway Dept. in Austin, Llano, and Fredericksburg, then four years as a structural design engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. He also worked two years with the Panama Canal Zone as a structural engineer and five years with the Bureau of Yards and Docks, U.S. Navy, Washington, D.C., during WWII. After the war, he returned to the Bureau of Reclamation in Washington, D.C. for two years. In 1947, Bill moved to Billings and began working as a Civil Engineer for the regional office of the Bureau of Reclamation, where he continued in administrative positions until his retirement in 1974, having had 39 years of federal service and 41 years in his profession.
Bill was a registered professional engineer and a past president of the Midland Empire Chapter of the Montana Society of Engineers. He was a member of Ashlar Lodge #29 for nearly 50 years, a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite, Masonry Director Emeritus of the Directors Staff, Al-Bedoo Shrine Temple, an honorary member of the Grand Cross of Color, Rainbow for Girls, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Billings.
Following retirement, William enjoyed working on geneology of the Summers family. He gathered records of over 4000 descendants and allied families of Rev. Peter Nicholas Sommer, the first permanent Lutheran minister to New York Colony, spanning ten generations in America and four generations in North Germany. He published a 390 page book titled, The Sommer, Sommers, Somers and Summers That Missed The Boat. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doreen, in October of 1987.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Billings; his two sons, Roland S. Summers, M.D. of Savannah, Ga., and Howard R. Summers of Houston, Tex.; seven grandchildren and three great--grandchildren; three step children, fourteen step grandchildren, and six step great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins 4 p.m. Monday, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist, 1001 Alderson Ave. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at First United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, 911 W. Fifth St., Spokane, WA 99204. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.
William F. 'Bill' Wolff
LINDSAY - William F. "Bill" Wolff, 76, of Lindsay, passed away on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the family farm in Lindsay. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive, with Fr. Joseph Ponessa officiating. Rite of Committal will be in the Dawson County cemetery, Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Bill was born on Nov. 25, 1922, in Glendive, the son of Edwin and Anna (Schiller) Wolff. He was raised and educated in the Lindsay area, graduating from Dawson County High School in Glendive in 1940. Bill married
Shirley Lange on Oct. 10, 1964. They made their home on the original Wolff homestead, where they had farmed and ranched since. Bill was a lifetime member of the Glendive Elks Lodge #1324, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #949, Glendive, and throughout Bill's life he had served on the Grain Growers Elevator board, the Lindsay School Board, the Glendive Medical Center Board, the Dawson County Conservation District, and at the time of his death he was serving as a member of the advisory board of Stockman Bank, Glendive. Bill's passion in life was farming and ranching and in 1990 he was awarded the Outstanding Conservation Rancher of the Year award. Bill loved spending time with his granddaughter and was looking forward to the birth of another grandchild in October.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Lindsay; two sons, Mike Wolff, and his wife Carol, and Jason Wolff, all of Lindsay; one daughter, Mari Anne Smith, and her husband, Keith of Helena; one granddaughter, Kamryn Smith; three brothers, Clarence Wolff and his wife, Marjean, Addis Wolff and his wife, Ethel, all of Glendive; and Neil Wolff and his wife Mary, of Billings; numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gerald.
Darwin Harry Wycherly
Darwin Harry Wycherly passed away peacefully on the evening of Sept. 11, 1999, after a valiantly fought battle with cancer. He died at home, quietly, comforted by honored friends and loving family.
Darwin was born in the coal mining town of Hiawatha, Utah, on Sept. 20, 1921. His father, Daniel Oscar Wycherly, labored as a mine foreman while his mother, Annie Lloyd Wycherly, worked tirelessly to raise seven children
Darwin was educated at Brigham Young University, The University of Utah and Henager Business College.
He served honorably in the United States Navy as a radioman during WWII and the Korean War.
Darwin was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He married
Ruth Marie Rickenbach Sept. 11, 1948. They were recently sealed in the Idaho Falls temple.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; brother, Gaylen; daughter, Pamela Lee Wycherly; son, Darwin Scott Wycherly, and Scott's children, Derick Darwin and Amber Lee Wycherly.
Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Funeral Gallery, located on the corner of Eighth Street West and St. Johns Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, at the LDS church located on the corner of Sixth Street West and Avenue D. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Van B. Bell
ABSAROKEE - Van B. Bell, age 83, of Absarokee, passed away at his home on Sept. 8, 1999.
Van was born on the Homestead at Fishtail on June 10, 1916, to William and Alice Bell.
Van enjoyed all animals and spent most of his life as a ranch hand in the Stillwater Valley beside Livingston. Van also worked for a time for Inverness Land & Cattle in Paradise Valley.
He is survived by one sister, Betty Mussetter of Livingston; two brothers, Kenneth Bell from Whitehall and Ervin Bell of Yuba City, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Frances Ruff.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Alexandria Mary Casillas
Our Mother and Grandma, Alexandria Mary Casillas, born on Feb. 9, 1924, to Demecia Lopez and Adrian Casillas. Mom was born and raised here in Billings and also resided in Kansas with her daughter, Pauline for seven years. In 1953 she married
Frank Hernandez in Hamilton.
Ms. Casillas was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, Pauline Bergerano; two brothers, Joe and John Casillas; and three sisters, Alfonsa and Fidela Martinez and Ophelia Garcia.
Alexandria is survived by six children; Julia (Avil) Quintanar of Arizona City, Ariz.; Elisa Bustos, (Bill) Kirkpatrick, Pascual (Jenny) Hernandez, Tomacita Sanchez, and Mack (Lucy) Hernandez, all of Billings; one brother, Mack Casillas of Billings; one sister; Eloisa Martinez of Ogden, Utah; 25 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with memorial services Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will take place at the Holy Cross cemetery. Janice Kay Downing
CODY, Wyo. - Janice Kay Downing, 56, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at her home of cancer.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at Ballard Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the First Presbyterian Church with interment in Riverside cemetery.
Eric Travis Ellingson
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Eric was born Dec. 17, 1975, in Fullerton, Calif. He moved to Billings, Mont., at age 11. Eric enjoyed sports and hanging out with his friends. He attended Castle Rock Junior High and went on to graduate from Skyview High School in 1994.
Eric enlisted in the Army his senior year and left for basic training in August of 1994. Eric was platoon leader in basic training and graduated from basic Oct. 6, 1994. He went on to AIT at Fort Gordon, Ga. Eric graduated jump school in March of 1995.
Eric lived in Fayetteville, where he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne. There, he met Stephanie Abel, and they were married
Oct. 11, 1997.
Eric went on to graduate the Special Forces qualifications course in August 1998. He was then a Green Beret.
Eric passed away Sept. 7, 1999, during a training operation in Georgia.
Eric truly loved his job and loved being part of the Army. He was a good man and loved his wife more than anything. He also had a very close relationship with his sister. Eric is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ellingson; his parents, Dale and Benita Nagel; his sister, Jodi and her husband, Bryan Emborg; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chris and Lisa Abel, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ben and Corissa Abel; his grandparents, Ron and Lois Ellingson and Richard and Ann Nagel. He is also survived by Jeff and Kimberly Ellingson and many aunts, uncles and cousins. We will always love and miss him.
Public visitations will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12, at Smith West Chapel and conclude at noon on Monday, Sept. 13. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at Smith West Chapel with military honors and interment rites to follow at Terrace Gardens cemetery.
