Henry A. Buller
SPOKANE, Wash. - Henry Anthony Buller, 79, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant and Billings native, died Sunday of complications from a stroke at St. Luke's Extended Care Facility in Spokane.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, 2203 N. Division, with recitation of the Rosary at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Assumption Catholic Church, 3624 W. Indian Trail Road with the Rev. Joe Bell officiating. Graveside services will follow at Greenwood cemetery. Memorials are suggested to: WWII Memorial, Court House Plaza II, Suite 501, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201.
Buller was born July 4, 1920, in Billings to Joseph and Meta Buller, the only one of the seven children born in a hospital. He grew up in Billings and graduated in 1938 from Billings Senior High School.
In 1939, be enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces at Chanute Field, Ill. In December 1941, he was stationed at Clark Field, the Philippines, with the 19th Bomb Group. He was one of the last Americans to be evacuated from the field when the Japanese invaded, and his unit was the first Air Force unit to receive the Presidential Unit Citation.
Buller went on to fly more than 35 B-17 missions as a machine gunner and a bombadier in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded two Silver Stars plus numerous other medals. On March 27, 1943, he was declared a "great Montanan" by then-Rep. Mike Mansfield, D-Mont., in the Congressional Record.
In 1948, while stationed in Germany, he participated in the Berlin Airlift. In 1953, he served with the U.S. Air Attache Office in Prague, Czechoslovakia. During the two-year assignment, he was the only enlisted man in the combined Air and Army Attache Office in that Iron Curtain country. In 1955, he was featured in the Air Force Times as "Outstanding Airman." In November 1963, while stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., Buller served as an usher at the funeral of President John F. Kennedy.
On Aug. 1, 1959, in Zurich, Switzerland, he married Kerstin E. Carlson of Helsinborg, Sweden.
In 1969, he retired after 30 years in the Air Force and moved his family to Spokane. He worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center as a supervisor in central supply for 14 years.
Survivors include his wife, at home; daughter, Christine and husband, Jeff Erickson of Sagle, Idaho; son, Michael Buller and wife, Micki Robbins of Seattle; and daughter, Patricia and husband, Eric Erickson of Spokane; sisters, Dorothy Buller and Magdalene Buller Winslow, both of Billings; two brothers and their spouses, John A. and Shirley Buller of Santa Rosa, Calif., Russell J. and Delores Buller of Clarkston, Mich.; sister-in-law, Jeanne Buller Bishop of Billings; five grandchildren, 16 nieces and nephews, 34 grandnieces and nephews, and six great-grandnieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph W. Buller of Billings in 1967, and Gerald F. Buller of Sitka, Alaska, in April of this year.

Grace Mae Coughlin
BOZEMAN - Grace Mae Coughlin, 65, passed away on Sept. 25, 1999, at her home in Bozeman. She was born May 1, 1934, in Livingston and grew up and attended school in Big Timber. She married Edward "Bud" Coughlin on May 1, 1954, and moved to Belgrade shortly thereafter, where she has remained a resident of the area.
Grace held various jobs through her life, but most of her time was spent being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed her family, friends, and adored her grandchildren. She also enjoyed camping, traveling, antique shopping, picture puzzles, yardwork, gardening, and a good game of cards. She will always be remembered for her unselfish caring and love for her family and friends.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; grandparents, Gunder and Inga Birkeland; parents, Martin and Alma Eik; a brother, Arnold Eik; and a sister, Mrs. Inga Olson.
Grace is survived by her sons, Corwin and wife, Celeste, Kim and wife, Kimberly; four grandchildren, Greg and Shannon Coughlin, James and Cory Armstrong; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Lutheran Church in Big Timber where Grace was baptized as a child. John L. Cross
GLENROCK, Wyo. - John L. Cross, 78, formerly of Custer, Mont., died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Poplar Living Center in Casper, Wyo.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Custer cemetery. Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory in Casper was in charge.

Leona Jacobsen
PLENTYWOOD - Funeral services for Leona Jacobsen will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30. Johnette Grefe will officiate at the service at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Plentywood; interment will be in Nathanael cemetery at Dagmar. Leona, 88, died Sunday morning at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.
Leona Christine Hutton was born May 20, 1911, at Gladys, N.D., the eldest of eight children of Alva and Olive (Richardson) Hutton. Leona attended schools in Grenora, N.D., and Medicine Lake. She married Paul Jacobsen Sept. 21, 1930, in Medicine Lake, and lived most of her adult life in Sheridan County while her parents, brothers and sisters settled in Oregon and California.
Paul and Leona started their married life on a farm southwest of Reserve, where their two oldest children were born. Leona suffered a stroke in 1940, while carrying their youngest child, resulting in a permanent paralysis of her right side. Leona dealt well with her affliction, relearning to write and speak, and to walk with the aid of a cane. She was an excellent cook, and could bake bread, do laundry, and run the household quite well despite her handicap.
Leona and Paul moved to Montana Pioneer Manor in 1970, where Leona continued to live after Paul's death in 1974. She moved to Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in 1990, where she resided until her death. Above all, Leona lived her family and will be greatly missed by all of them.
Leona is survived by three children and their families: daughters, Eunice (and her husband, Sylvan) Lodahl of Homestead; Marlene (and her husband, Dale) Wivholm of Oakdale, Minn.; son, Don and his wife, Sylvia) Jacobsen of White Bear Lake, Minn.; stepdaughter, Sylvia DeKaye of Cut Bank, and her family, and stepdaughter-in-law, Bernice Jacobsen of Plentywood, and her family; as well as eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, and numerous step-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Guisinger, and Connie Sorensen, and a brother, Ray Hutton. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters: Paul and Ward Hutton, Vivian Farmer and Lois Hutton; and by two stepsons, Glenn and Arne Jacobsen.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.

Jamison 'J.T.' Johnson
THERMOPOLIS - Jamison Theodore "J.T." Johnson, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Hot Springs County Hospital after a short illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Mortimore Funeral Home with interment at Monument Hill cemetery.

Carl Monroe
POWAY, Calif. - Carl Monroe, 31, formerly of Miles City, Mont., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999.
Vigil services will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with interment at 2 p.m. in the family lot in the Knowlton cemetery.

Robert R. 'Bob' Newhouse
HELENA - Robert R. "Bob" Newhouse died from cancer Sept. 26 at the age of 64.
Born July 6, 1935, to Robert P. and Kathryn M. Newhouse, he grew up in Wyola and Bridger.
Bob served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He received his civil engineering degree from MSU and a master's degree in engineering and a law degree from University of Southern California.
Bob was the first county engineer for Madera County, Calif., in 1962. He continued his career as the Helena city engineer, overseeing urban renewal in the downtown area. He later managed the Water Treatment Plant and then worked as an engineer for the Department of Highways in the area of hydraulics, consulting and design.
Since his retirement, Bob has been involved in city-wide transportation issues. He was elected to the Helena Citizens Council in 1997 and served on the Budget Committee.
He is survived by his son, James Newhouse of Nevada City, Calif.; his daughter, Sandra Wong; and grandchildren, Kristine and Nikolai of Billings.
Bob tremendously enjoyed the "Alive at Five" outdoor programs in Performance Square in downtown Helena. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Performance Square, c/o Business Improvement District, 225 Cruise Ave., Helena, MT 59601.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Hagler--Anderson Funeral Home. Graveside services with Military Honors will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Bridger cemetery.

Clara D. Overfelt
GREAT FALLS - Clara D. Overfelt, 95, formerly of Big Timber, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at First Congregational Church in Big Timber with interment in the Big Timber cemetery.

Robert A. Peterson
Robert A. "Bob" Peterson, a 13-year resident of Billings, died on Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital at the age of 81. He was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Culbertson, the son of Ida and John E. Peterson.
He grew up in Culbertson and Froid, graduating from Culbertson High School in 1935. Bob went on to college in Bozeman, transferring to earn his B.S. in economics at the University of Montana in 1941. There he met his wife of nearly 56 years, Bernice Hollensteiner. After working a year in Minot, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as a naval officer, mostly aboard ship in the Pacific, during WWII.
Bob and Bernice married on Dec. 12, 1943, in Oakland, Calif. After his discharge, they made their home in Culbertson, where he joined his father, Ed, in the Culbertson State Bank. He worked there, later becoming president of the bank, until his retirement and moved to Billings in 1986. They raised their three children in Culbertson, where Bob took time to give many hours toward making his hometown a better place to live. Bob and Bernice also traveled extensively in and outside of the U.S. during those years.
Most important to Bob was his family, friends, and community. He was a kind and generous man, who has left behind many friends. Bob was committed to helping people, and worked tirelessly all his life for many causes. During his time in Billings, Bob was an active and involved member of many organizations. Among them are the Golden K Kiwanis (Past Pres.), Plentywood Masonic Lodge, Al Bedoo Shrine (Honorary Chanter and Past Pres. of Greeters), American Legion, Elks, S.C.O.R.E., Eastern Star Moss Agate Chapter 126 (past patron), Petroleum Club, Host Program, American Legion, and a member of Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served as usher for many years.
Bob was a quiet and thoughtful man, who was committed to what he believed in and supported his causes in every way he could, always working actively on some project. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen.
Survivors include his loving wife, Bernice of Billings; his daughter, Darcy and her husband, Don Kjome and children, Jake and wife, Kirsten and Sam, all of Victoria, N.M.; his daughter, Gay and her husband, Mark Berg and children, Ariel and Peterson, all of Auburn, Calif.; and his son, Dana and his wife, Donna of Chicago.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Al-Bedoo Shrine Transportation Trust Fund, P.O. Box 20673, Billings, MT 59104, IDD c/o Billings Village Golden Kiwanis, P.O. Box 20203, Billings, MT 59104-0203, or the charity of one's choice. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist has charge of arrangements.

Douglas S. Phillips
WATERTOWN, Wis. - Douglas S. Phillips died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at his home.
He was born Aug. 20, 1951, in Lewistown, Mont., to Stan and Catherine (Christensen) Phillips.
He graduated from Billings Senior High School and from MSU and married Connie Townsend in 1972 in Billings. Doug served in the military with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He married Lisa Boykin in Reno, Nev., in 1992 and moved to Watertown in 1997 where he served in the National Guard and worked for Farmers Insurance.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa and two step-children, Richard and Elizabeth of the family home; his mother and his sister, Gail Frezzette, both of Reno; his children, Allison, Charles and Lee Phillips, all of Leavenworth, Kan.
Services were held in Watertown.

Sidney L. Ramer
MILES CITY - Sidney Leroy Ramer, 92, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with interment in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery.

Ann D. Sherman
Ann D. Sherman, 93, of Billings, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Western Manor Nursing Home.
The daughter of John and Sophia Frankovic, Ann was born Nov. 16, 1905, at Belt. She attended school at Washoe and was raised in the Red Lodge and Bear Creek area.
She married A. Jalmer Saari, June 20, 1922. She married Dewey H. Sherman in Lewistown, June 11, 1936. Following their marriage they moved to Billings. Ann had worked for Hart Albin's for 17 years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing. She was a member of St. Patrick's Co--Cathedral and had belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Becker and her husband, Michael of Billings; three brothers, Charles Frankovic of Spokane, Andrew Frankovic of Harrisburg, Pa., and Rudolph Frankovic of Buffalo, Wyo.; six grandchildren, Andrea Workman of Shepherd, Michael S. Becker of Helena, Melissa Dye of Billings, Mark Becker of Billings, Kevin Becker of Albuquerque, N.M., and Karen Lloyd of Billings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey in 1990, her parents, three sisters, and five brothers.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Martin W. Smith Jr.
ROUNDUP - Martin W. Smith Jr., 81, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the Wier Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Roundup City cemetery.

Bertha Sundheim
WILLISTON, N.D. - Services for Bertha Sundheim, 83, formerly of Froid, Mont., most recently of Williston, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Bethel Home Chapel. Chaplain Betty Czubay will officiate. Burial will be at South Froid cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Williston, and one hour prior to services at Bethel Home Chapel.
Bertha Sundheim was born Sept. 27, 1916, on the family homestead near Antelope. She was the daughter of Eilert and Betsy (Birkeland) Brekke. Bertha grew up on the farm and attended Eden Valley School. From the age of 12, she worked for many families cooking, cleaning and caring for their children.
On Aug. 16, 1936, she was united in marriage to Noel Sundheim in Plentywood. After her marriage she continued her life as a farm wife near Froid. Bertha and Noel later moved to live in the Kensington in Williston in August of 1997. Noel moved to the Bethel Home in June of 1999, and later Bertha moved to join her husband in Bethel Home on July 12, 1999.
Bertha died at Bethel Lutheran Home on Sept. 27, 1999, from complication of hip surgery that was performed on Aug. 6, 1999.
Bertha loved the country life, her flower garden and her cats. She was renowned for her angel food cakes, pumpkin pies and Norwegian Donuts.
She is survived by her husband, Noel of Bethel Home; five children: Joyce (Ozzie) Brensdal of Westby, Diane (Vince) Davis of Reno, Nev., Larry (Joan) Sundheim of Elsmere, Ky., Linda (Tom) Waller of Froid, Sherry (Chuck) Neff of Williston, N.D.; one sister, Astrid Grayson of Plentywood; two brothers, Herman Brekke of Big Timber, Ray Brekke of Anaconda; 13 grandchildren and four step grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Alma Thingelstad, Dolly Spaabeck, Jenny Summers; and two brothers, Ben Brekke and infant brother, Robert Brekke.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Williston is in charge of arrangements.
