Alice Marie Spence
CLARK, Wyo. - Alice Marie Spence passed away at her home near Clark on Aug. 7, 1999, after battling lung cancer for approximately one year.
Alice Marie Spence was born in Elk Basin on March 22, 1926, to Guy and Mabel Harris Spence. She attended area grade schools, entered the 9th grade in Billings, and graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1944 and subsequently attended Billings Business College.
During her high school years in Billings, she held various part-time jobs, one at Peterson's Typewriter, and was probably the only female in Billings who held a traditionally male job working at a neighborhood gas station fixing flats and performing all of the flunkie jobs that came with that kind of job in those days.
A movie buff all her life, when she finished business college, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., to follow her dream of working at a major movie studio. Alice began work with Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) in 1945, starting in the "bull pen" - otherwise known as a steno pool. She quickly advanced to the position of script girl, and ultimately worked her way up to a job as an assistant script writer.
Her next goal, seeing Europe, was fulfilled when she determined that it would be cheaper to live and work in Europe than simply travel there. She was quickly successful in securing an administrative Civil Service job with the post-World War II U.S. Army occupation forces in Heidelberg, West Germany. While employed there, she traveled all of Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa. When her Army job ended, she returned to Denver, Colo., where she worked for a major sugar company.
Alice eventually returned to Billings to work for the Yellowstone County Attorney. She was also employed at KOOK television, now known as KTVQ.
She returned to her roots in Wyoming in 1966 to help her father, and her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Forsman, operate their small ranch near Clark that had always been a part of her life.
During her active adult years, Alice was an avid tennis player and golfer. Being an excellent skier, she also skied most of the major slopes in the western U.S. and Europe. She was always an enthusiastic reader, keeping up with current events in the world, and particularly the entertainment business. She enjoyed the arts and theater, visited world renowned art museums and attended professional stage productions in Los Angeles and San Francisco every opportunity she had. Listening to good music with a glass of equally good wine was always a perfect way to spend an evening as far as Alice was concerned. Never married
, her animals were her children. She could always be counted on to provide a home for a dog or cat that needed one. Even the deer who visited her apple orchard almost daily seemed to know that Alice's place was a safe haven.
Alice is survived by a half-sister, Margaret Berry of Tacoma, Wash.; a half-brother, Bob Spence of California; nephews, Kevin (Cheryl) Davis of Billings, Ford (Connie) Davis of Sheridan, Mont., Chad (Patricia) Andreasen of Buckley, Wash., Rex (Marietta) Andreasen of Puyallup, Wash.; numerous cousins, grandnieces and nephews, her beloved animals, and a community of close and caring friends.
preceded in death by both parents; stepfather, Bert Ennis; grandnephew, Christopher Davis; niece, Allyson Davis; aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Forsman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Alice's name may be made to the Clark-Pioneer Community Center, c/o Elmer Bunn, 90 Bunn Lane, Powell, WY 82435.
Memorial Service will be held at the Bennett Creek Church, Clark, on Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at 1 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home of Powell is in charge of arrangements.
