Dolores K. 'Bocky' Gluyas
MILES CITY - Dolores K. "Bocky" Gluyas, age 77, of Miles City, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at her home after a courageous fight with cancer.
Mrs. Gluyas, affectionately known as Bocky by her family and friends, was born on July 24, 1922, in Miles City, the daughter of Louie and Katherine F. Allen. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She was employed for many years as a receptionist and switchboard operator at the Holy Rosary Hospital.
Mrs. Gluyas and William R. Gluyas were married in August of 1972. Survivors include her husband of Miles City; three sons: Allen Minkoff of Miles City, Richard Minkoff and his wife, Connie of Billings, and Dan Minkoff and his good friend, Karen of Chariton, Iowa; two daughters: Mary Jean Shober and her husband, Dennis of Helena and Linda Maxwell and her husband, Tom of Lewistown; one stepson, David Gluyas and his wife, Denise of Lovell, Wyo.; 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a very special daughter-in-law, Linda Minkoff.
At her request, a private family graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at 3 p.m. in the Custer County cemetery. A private memorial dinner will be held at a later date. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Bocky enjoyed watching sports as a spectator and also participated in bowling and golf. She was also a great cook, specializing in pastry. She was an avid reader and loved all animals. But most of all she loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. Her little beagle "Knibs" will miss her.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Miles City Public Library Foundation, the Eastern Montana Cancer Center, the Holy Rosary Hospice, the East Main Animal Clinic, or a charity of their choice.

Ruth Jones
Ruth Jones, age 85, formerly of Glendive, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at the Valley Health Care Center in Billings.
A Memory service for family and friends will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at the United Methodist Church in Glendive with Pastors Carter and Myrna Havner officiating. Interment will be in the Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Ruth was born on May 2, 1914, in Chetek, Wis., the daughter of Albert and Nannie Harvey (Mason) Matchette. She moved to Beach, N.D., as a child and then moved to Montana to the Belle Prairie area near Glendive where her family farmed. She attended Dawson County Schools and Dawson County High School.
In August of 1931, Ruth married Clarence Jones in Glendive. They made their home in the Belle Prairie area on the Dion Ranch. They moved into Glendive in 1937 where they resided until 1947 when they moved to the Burns Creek area where they owned and operated a farm and ranch. They returned to Glendive in 1954 where she had made her home until three months ago when she moved to the Bee Hive Assisted Living in Laurel. Ruth had worked as a clerk at Anderson's Department Store in Glendive for more than 20 years until retiring in 1976.
Ruth's hobbies included sewing, crocheting, arts and crafts. She enjoyed family get-togethers and going out to eat with her family. Ruth was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Don Jones and his wife, Joyce of Glendive and Darrell Jones and his wife, Hazel of Grand Junction, Colo.; four daughters, Betty Colby of Billings, LaDonna Roesler and her husband, Emil of Glendive, Linda Robson of Belgrade and Lynn Balback and her husband, George of Billings; two sisters, Grace Downing of Rodger, Texas, and Fern Hodous of Billings; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence in 1959; two sisters, Pat Williams and Elizabeth Brown; one brother, Bert Matchette; seven half-brothers and half-sisters; two grandsons, Travis Robson and Dean Jones; and one great-grandson, Adam Jones.

John Knels
FAIRVIEW - John Knels, 38, of Fairview, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at the Sidney Health Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Zion Lutheran Church with interment in the Fairview cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge.

Loren Lee 'Bo' Laird
MILES CITY - Loren Lee "Bo" Laird, age 68, of Miles City passed away Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bo was born in Miles City on April 13, 1931, the son of Glen and Nina (Horr) Laird. He attended Lincoln Elementary, Washington Junior High, and Custer County High School. Following graduation, he attended the University of Montana, University of Perugia, State University of Madrid, and California State University. Bo entered the United States Army in 1953 and served two years. Bo married Sigrid Ragna Rivenes in Miles City on Dec. 27, 1961.
Bo was very active in the school system and coached swimming, tennis, track, basketball, baseball, football, and speech and debate.
Bo is survived by his wife, Sigrid of Miles City; three daughters: Stephanie Pratt and her husband, Greg and son, Zachariah of California; Bridget Laird and her husband, David Batchelder and their son, Angus of New Hampshire; and Cameron Laird of California; and a son, David Laird, and his wife, Amy and their children: Lauren, Jacob, and Kyra of Washington; two sisters: Florence Hicks of Oregon and Murial Malcolm of Washington; two brothers: Glen Laird of Miles City and Walton Laird of Billings; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joyce McGuire; and two brothers: Beverly Laird and Bill Laird.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. in the Custer County District High School Gymnasium with Rev. Sherwood McKay officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Miles City Library or to the Letke-Armstrong Scholarship Fund.

M. Helen (Housel) Lewis
LEWISTOWN - M. Helen (Housel) Lewis, 92, of Lewistown, died Wednesday morning at her home of natural causes. She was born Jan. 17, 1907, in Lewistown, the daughter of Ferman P. and Nellie (Walsh) Hansel. She received her education in the Castle Butte School and Lewistown Schools, graduating from Fergus County High School in 1926.
She then practice taught at the Ryan School near the N Bar Ranch in Fergus County. She later taught at the Mountain View School, Ware School and Long School near Valentine. On Nov. 29, 1930, she was united in marriage to Ronald J. Lewis in Lewistown. In 1931 to 1936 they lived in Petroleum County on Dry Blood Creek. They then lived in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains near Castle Creek for one year. In 1937 they lived south of Lewistown on the Housel farm. In 1951 they purchased their farm at Ware. They retired in 1977 and moved into Lewistown. He preceded her in death in 1977. She continued to live in Lewistown until the time of her death.
Helen was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who endured many hardships without running water or electricity. She loved to cook and bake cookies and pies. Her grandchildren called her the Cookie Grandma. She enjoyed country music.
She was a charter member of the First Christian Church and the Women's Council of the church, a member of the G.A.R., having served as president, and the Farmers Union.
Helen is survived by one son: James E. and his wife, Marilyn of Ware; one daughter: Ruth Hoagland of Lolo; one sister: Bernice Thonpson of Lewistown; 10 grandchildren: Ronald J. Lewis and his wife, Leeanne in New Jersey, Roxanna Schuenke and her husband, Scott in Minnesota, Janey Eames and her husband, David of Billings, Michael Lewis of Great Falls, Dean Lewis and his wife, Dana in Washington, Kristie Haines in Oregon, Jill Knerr and husband, Jess of Roy, Hal Hoagland and wife, Messy of Butte, Shawn Hoagland and wife, Gina of Whitehall, and Lyndi Farra and husband, Jeff of Lolo; 19 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law: Jean Reiter of Billings; three sisters-in-law: Edith Housel in California, Doris Housel in Washington and Ethel Lewis of Lewistown; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; one son, Keith R. in 1969; granddaughter, Jenna Hoagland in 1969; son-in-law, Harley Hoagland in 1996; six brothers: Ferman, Oliver, Lloyd, Ernest, Herschel and Clifford; two sisters: Gertrude Newbury and Marjorie Rich; one brother-in-law, Bernard Lewis.
Funeral Services for Helen (Housel) Lewis will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Cloyd Chapel with interment to follow in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Shodair Children's Hospital or to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.

Esther P. Oblander
BALLANTINE - Esther P. Oblander, 88, of Ballantine, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at the Deaconess Medical Center. She was born on July 25, 1911, at Gaylord, Kan., to Peter and Hannah Iffland.
At 2 years old, she came to Montana on her dad's homestead. She went to school in Pompeys Pillar and Golden Divide School, which was located on the north side of the Yellowstone River.
On Nov. 23, 1934, she married William Oblander at Columbus. They were married for 58 years. She worked 20 years for Midland Empire Fair in Billings as a clerk in the Culinary Department and made wedding cakes for five years. She enjoyed sewing, raising a big garden, flowers, fishing, traveling and family.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris Ewen (Keith) and Jean Broadbent (Duane), both of Ballantine; one brother, Henry Iffland of Billings; one brother-in-law, Mike Oblander (Ann); four sisters-in-law, Edna Iffland, Alice Oblander, Elsie Wohlberg, and Esther VanLuchene; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Bill; parents; and one brother, Ernest Iffland, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at the Bethlehem Congregational Church in Worden. Interment will be in the Pleasantview cemetery of Ballantine. Memorials to the Bethlehem Congregational Church, Worden, 59088. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda L. Reed
HELENA - Hilda L. Reed passed away Aug. 25, 1999, at Rocky Mountain Retreat, near Helena. She was born Nov. 30, 1913, in Miles City, the only child of Alva and Myrtle Mitchell Hiers. Her mother died shortly after the birth and she was reared by her grandmother, Nettie Jane Hiers.
She graduated from Custer County High School in 1932. In her early years, she lived and worked in Miles City, Yellowstone National Park and Billings; in later years, she assisted her father in his Miles City real estate business. She enjoyed working with Girl Scouts and sewed gifts for hospitalized children. Hilda was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Miles City, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She moved in 1988 to Helena to live near her daughter.
Survivors include her daughter, Jane R. Benson of Helena, and grandchildren, Erik Benson and Anna Beson Tosh of Missoula.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, in the Miles City First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Custer County cemetery. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Clarice Arlene Rollins
CLATSKANIE, Ore. - Clarice Arlene Rollins, 68, of Clatskanie and formerly of Terry, Mont., died Aug. 17, 1999, at His House Care Center in Ranier.
Memorial services were held Aug. 23 in Clatskanie. Graveside Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Beach City cemetery, Beach, N.D. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach and Haakinson-Groulx Mortuaries of Clatskanie are in charge.

Ann Heikens Willis
NASHUA - Ann Heikens Willis, 37, of Nashua, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow of cancer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church with interment in the Nashua City cemetery. Bell Mortuary of Glasgow is in charge.

Ferne R. Brunn
Ferne R. Brunn, 76, passed away quietly Aug. 24, 1999, at Western Manor Health Care Center where she had resided since April of 1998. Residents and staff fondly remember her as the pretty lady with a twinkle in her eyes.
In Foley, Minn., on Nov. 9, 1923, Ferne was born the daughter of LaVerne and Irma (Orton) Kreager. At the age of six months, Ferne's mother passed away and her grandparents, William and Rachel Orton, raised Ferne on their homestead in Ollie.

On Sept. 7, 1948, Ferne was united in marriage to Lawrence J. Brunn in Foley. They lived in Foley until moving to Shelby in 1953, where they farmed for a couple of years, returning to Minnesota. In 1963 they moved to Miles City and to Billings in 1978. Lawrence passed away July 24, 1986, at which time Ferne moved in with her son where she received care from several kind and supportive personal aides before entering Western Manor. Ferne's joy in life was being with her family, especially her grandchildren, Scott and Kristin, and playing cards. "Fernie" will be remembered by her family and friends for her wit, kindness and inner strength. Her courage in facing life's challenges was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Shirley) Mackney; son, Lawrence (Larry) J. Brunn Jr.; grandchildren, Scott and Kristin Mackney; special friends, Kathy Grooms and Bruce and Patty Wilson, all of Billings.

Her parents, husband, Lawrence, and infant son, Joseph A., preceded her in death.

There will be a funeral service at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Dahl Funeral Chapel with cremation to follow. Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A special thank you to the staff at Western Manor who made Mom's days a little brighter and not only helped her, but her family through some difficult days. Also, thank you to Dr. Steve Kramer and Dr. Donald Twito for their years of support and care.

You are at peace now Mom and Grandma. We love you and you will be in our hearts forever.

Howard B. Hanson
BIG TIMBER - Howard B. Hanson, 78, of Big Timber, passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, in Billings. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Lowry Funeral Home in Big Timber, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before the service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helmer and Mabel Hanson; one brother, Lloyd Hanson; and one sister, Bonnie Jackson.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Thompson of Big Timber; five brothers: Roy of Glendale, Ariz., Vernon of Columbia Heights, Minn., Russell of Fridley, Minn., Ronald of Stone Lake, Wis., and Larry of Watertown, S.D.; and one sister, Gladys Rottach of St. Anthony Village, Minn. Lowry Funeral Home made the arrangements.

Charlynn Renae Carpentier
White Flower Woman
POPLAR - Charlynn Renae Carpentier, White Flower Woman, was born in Williston, N.D., on May 6, 1994, to Harlan Walking Eagle Jr. of St. Francis, S.D., and Ronalee Carpentier of Poplar. She was 5 years old when she died as the result of a pedestrian accident on Aug. 20, 1999, in Poplar. The Lord took her in a terrible way but did not let her suffer.
Charlynn was very friendly and loved by everyone who knew her. She was so proud to be the Badlands' Junior Princess for next year. She was the one who always gave a big smile and a wave to the crowd. Charlynn loved to go to Pow-Wows and dance. Her grandparents, Julia Young and Cody Eagleman, loved her with all their hearts and took her on the Pow-Wow Trails.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Harlan Walking Eagle Sr.

She is survived by her parents, Harlan of St. Francis and Ronalee of Poplar; one sister, Alisa Walking Eagle and one brother, Shawn Walking Eagle both of St. Francis; great-grandmother, Raquel Menz of Poplar; grandmother, Madelyn Walking Eagle of South Dakota; grandmas, Yvette White Hawk, Margaret Hapa, Julia Young and Jonelle Menz, all of Poplar. Her uncles are: Gerald Young and Robert Carpentier of Poplar; aunt, Sandra Carpentier of Poplar; grandpas, Kenny Olson, Keith Olson, Lester Olson, Robert Olson, Levi Olson Sr., Irvin Olson and Allen Menz, all of Poplar. She took Brad and Maureen Gray Hawk, of Poplar, as her uncle and aunt; Diane LaRoque, of Poplar, as an aunt; and Shelley Booth, of Poplar, as a grandmother. She has many nieces and nephews and relatives. Her family from South Dakota are Charlotte Walking Eagle, Joel Marshall, Wade, Allen and Eric Walking Eagle.

A wake will be held Wednesday, Aug. 25, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. with Rev. Fr. Michael Schneider officiating at the Poplar Cultural Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 26 at the Poplar Cultural Center with Rev. Fr. Schneider officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar City cemetery with a feed to follow at the Cultural center. Clayton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James M. 'Jim' Clark
LAUREL - James "Jim" Michael Clark Jr., 26, of Laurel, formerly of Havre, passed away Monday at a Great Falls hospital as a result of head injuries from a fall. Funeral Services will be Aug. 26, 1999, 2 p.m., at the Havre Central Gymnasium with Father Robert D. Grosch officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland cemetery. Memorials in Jim's honor may be made to the Jim Clark Memorial Fund c/o Wendy Clark, 1510 E. Railroad St., Laurel, MT 59044. Arrangements are under the direction of Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
Jim was born Dec. 13, 1972, in Havre to James M. and Betty (Schmidt) Clark Sr. He attended grade school at St. Jude and Havre Central School, graduating from Havre High School in 1991. Jim obtained his bachelor's degree in diesel mechanics at MSU-Northern in 1995, graduating with departmental honors. Jim then attended horseshoeing school at MSU-Bozeman.

He married Wendy Badgett July 11, 1998, in Broadus, and the couple made their home in Laurel.

Jim worked for various ranchers including Cowans, John Sheehy, and Hanson's during his high school and college years. After completing farrier school, Jim began his own horseshoeing business in the Havre area while also working full-time at Rainbow Irrigation. In July 1998, Jim moved with his wife to Laurel and was pursuing his dream of being a full-time horseshoer.

He enjoyed working in the forge, roping, riding colts, relaxing in front of the TV and going out of his way to help others. He had a way of making a lasting impression on everyone he met. But his biggest love in life was being with his wife.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James I. and Sophie Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy of Laurel; his parents, Jim and Betty Clark of Havre; two sisters, Jennifer Clark and fiancÈ, Justin of Spokane, Wash., and Jamee Clark of Havre; grandparents, Herb and Esther Schmidt of Fairfield; nieces, Sam, Elle and Jaymee of Custer, S.D.; and several aunts and uncles.

Michael James Malyurek
MESA, Ariz. - Michael James Malyurek, 85, formerly of Sheridan, Wyo., died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in Mesa.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at Kane Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Ida Evelyn (Evie) Allen
Ida E. Allen (Evie) died peacefully at her home on Aug. 21, 1999. She was born on July 17, 1918, the fourth child of Andrew and Mary Esp Olson, in Big Timber. She attended schools in Big Timber and later attended Normal School in Billings and taught elementary school in Big Timber area country schools.
In 1942 she married Clark W. Allen in Bremerton, Wash. Following WWII, they returned to Billings where they owned and operated Yellowstone Glass Co. until Clark's retirement in 1971. Evie was a loving mother and grandmother, with an intense interest in the lives and activities of her offspring.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark W. Allen in 1992, and brothers, Arnold and Sam Olson. She is survived by a son, Clark W. Allen Jr. (Patty) of Portland Ore.; daughters, Sheryl Kellum (Jerry), Margene Bernhart; former son-in-law, Gordon Bernhart; two sisters, Ruby Olson and Agnes Jacobson; brother, Oscar Olson; sister-in-law, Jane Allen; and good friend and neighbor, Adelaide Gibbs.
Grandchildren include: Aaron Kellum (Courtney), Allyson Kellum, Jay Bernhart, Bradley Bernhart, Warner Allen, Dale Ann Hall, and Anita Allen; several great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist Mortuary on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at 2 p.m. Private interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens is planned. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Alice Lorraine Butcher
MISSOULA - Alice Lorraine Butcher passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, 1999, at St. Patrick Hospital of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Hudson, Wis., the daughter of Charles and Ida Bourne. As a young girl, she grew up in Gillette, Wyo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George Butcher.
Lorraine is survived by one sister, Madge Dahl of Edina, Minn.; one son, Stanley R. Butcher and his wife, Joan of Cedar Grove, N.J.; one daughter, Sandra Card and her husband, Bill of Loveland, Colo. Also surviving are two grandsons, Scott Card of Cheyenne, Wyo., Brian Card of Loveland, and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Card of Loveland.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Malletta Family of Funeral Homes, Squire Chapel. As was Lorraine's request, no services are planned.
