Carolyn C. Johnson
The Heavens smiled and perhaps even laughed in joy as Carolyn C. Johnson was welcomed home. After a courageous year-and-a-half battle, cancer robbed us of Carolyn but not of her indomitable spirit. She of the wonderful stories, love of mankind, undying faith, contagious sense of humor, unquenchable probing for answers, marvelous wonder and joy in the smallest mountain wildflower to the soaring eagle, will live in our hearts forever. She blessed us with her grace and dignity in life and even more as she moved to her heavenly home. Her presence will be so terribly missed but what joy she gave us all.
Carolyn was born Jan. 12, 1942, in Michigan to Theresa and George Varga and passed away Aug. 27, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Each moment, each person to cross her path, was a gift from God. The love of her life, David, was her rock and best buddy.
Carolyn and David moved to Montana in March of 1973. Carolyn is survived by David, her mother and husband, two sisters, a brother, a large extended family, and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father. Her friends are endless because she was a friend to everyone she met. If you weren't a friend of Carolyn's it was only because she hadn't met you.
Dear Carolyn, may your flight be as exhilarating as an eagle, may you find that special arrowhead, may you continue to walk with God as you wait for those who love you so much. Peace and wholeness, dear friend, are now yours.
Please join us in a celebration of Carolyn's life on Monday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel West, 304 34th St. W., Billings, with interment at Mountview cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Billings Animal Shelter, 302 Edward, Billings, MT 59101, would be appreciated.

Richard A. Blom
MISSOULA - This is a story of romance, adventure, comedy, tragedy, and hope. Most importantly, this is a story of a man who loved many different people in many different ways.
The story begins on July 17, 1930, in Sioux Falls, S.D., when Olaf and Lillian (Husby) Blom welcomed their firstborn son, Richard Arthur, into this world.
Throughout his life Richard knew the meaning of work. As a young boy, he worked at the theater scraping gum off the seats and at a local bowling alley setting up pins. His true calling was the newspaper business. Richard's first venture into the newspaper industry was as a paper boy for the Argus Leader. The Argus was his home for many years as he moved up the ranks from carrying papers to setting cold metal type.
It was during his apprenticeship at the Argus Leader that he married his high school sweetheart, Adelyn Sue Freeman, on Aug. 27, 1950. Their union produced three children, all of whom they were very proud. Richard, or Dick as he was known by his friends and family, continued his employment with the Argus Leader until moving to Des Moines, Iowa, to join Meredith Publishing Company.
Richard was visionary when it came to computers and the printing industry. Seizing upon that vision, Richard joined Lee Enterprises in 1968 which provided him many opportunities to travel extensively from coast to coast installing computer systems for Lee Enterprises' newspapers. He worked for Lee Enterprises until his retirement in 1993.
Richard and Sue spent many happy years together, especially enjoying canoe trips in Lake of the Woods, Minn. They both contributed their love and labor to developing Raccoon Valley, a baseball park in Des Moines. It was in Des Moines that Richard pursued his love of ham radio, which he was actively involved in for many years.
When Richard joined Lee Enterprises, he, Sue, and the kids moved to Billings. It was in Big Sky Country that they and their children spent many a weekend exploring the new land which greeted them.
Their time in Montana brought many transitions, the first being Richard and Sue's divorce. He then married Billie Lewis. Their partnership lasted over two decades after which he married Juanita Huffman in 1998. Richard and Juanita resided in Missoula, and they spent many happy times with her daughters and their families.
Career, romance, and adventure, combined with Richard's fantastic sense of humor, created a person who was fun to be with, especially after achieving his biggest accomplishment in his life - successfully completing an alcohol rehabilitation program in 1988. Richard maintained his sobriety which offered him a new lease on life, one that he embraced and was thankful for every day thereafter.
While Richard was involved in a number of organizations and groups throughout his life, he was most recently a member of the Roosevelt Memorial Masonic Lodge 129, Elected Chapter 7 OES, and Sons of Norway Hilsen Lodge 521.
After Richard's retirement, he enjoyed spending more time with his son and two daughters. Tragedy struck, however, in 1995 with the death of his son, Dennis. Richard never quite recovered from the pain of losing his only son.
However, being the stubborn Norwegian that he was, Richard faced life's daily challenges the best way he knew how. He declined in health in recent years until his death on Aug. 24, 1999, of a massive stroke with family at his side.
While Richard joins Dennis and Sue in the glorious realm of Heaven, he leaves behind his wife, Juanita of Missoula; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Leroy Leingang of Vero Beach, Fla., Nancy and Guy Rittel of Bismarck, N.D.; his daughter-in-law, Vicki Blom of Fargo, N.D.; his grandchildren, Shawn and Tim Russell of Kettering, Ohio, Denny LaVe of France, and Jeremiah Rittel of Bismarck; and a brother, Robert Blom of Sioux Falls.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Ophus officiating. There will be a reception following in the church reception hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Dennis D. Blom Memorial Scholarship, c/o Roosevelt Memorial Lodge 129, Belfield, N.D. 58622.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
