John Henry Gallop
John Henry Gallop, 89, of Billings, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at the Eagle Cliff Manor Care Center.
He was born to John James Gallop and Laura Frances Odel on Dec. 9, 1909. He attended two country schools, Kelso and Center in Missouri, and also attended Mound City School in Missouri.
John married
Louise Rudio Glantz, Dec. 4, 1948, in Billings.
He worked as a Boiler Maker in the Portland, Ore., shipyards from December of 1940 to January of 1945. He worked as a welder and followed construction, working in many states from 1945 until retirement in June of 1976.
John has lived in Billings since 1964. He belonged to the Plumbers and Pipefitters for 50 years.
His hobbies were ground preparation for gardens and landscaping, maintaining his own lawn, dancing and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Louise C. Gallop of Billings; one daughter, Tanya Vaught of Colstrip; one son, Curtis Gallop of Sonora, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Carol Morris of Boulder, Colo., and Sandra Williamson of Stockbridge, Ga.; three granddaughters, one great-grandson, two step-grandsons, one step-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and four sisters.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. W. Interment will be in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Helen Mary Meissel
MILES CITY - Helen Mary Meissel, 77, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Health Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, at the Trinity Lutheran Church with interment in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.
Ronald F. Janousek
GLENDIVE - Ronald F. Janousek, age 53, of Glendive, passed away on Thursday, July 1, 1999, at his home in Glendive after a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive with Don Schmitt officiating. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Ron was born on Feb. 10, 1946, in Grafton, N.D., the son of James J. and Emma (Vavravsky) Janousek. He was raised and educated in Grafton, graduating from Grafton High School in 1964. He entered the U.S. Army in February of 1966 and served during Vietnam. Following his discharge from the military in February of 1968, he lived in various locations in Montana and worked in the carpet installation business. On May 26, 1981, Ron married
Diane Ray in Missoula. They moved to Glendive in 1982 where Ron was the owner of his floor installation company called Ron's Floor Covering.
Ron was a member of the V.F.W. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Diane of Glendive; daughters, Kyra and Jamie Janousek of Washington and Ailisha Janousek of Glendive; stepson, Jason Kolding of Glendive; his parents, James and Emma Janousek of Grafton; one brother, Paul Janousek of Maple Lake, Minn.; three sisters, Patricia Dusek and Jean Clark, both of Grafton, and MaryEllen Sleeper of Grand Forks, N.D.
Theresa McIntosh McKamey
WORLAND, Wyo. - Theresa McIntosh McKamey, 88, of Worland and formerly of Billings, Mont., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in Tulsa, Okla.
Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 5, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church with interment in the Riverview cemetery. Veile Mortuary is in charge.
Monte Ray Rapstad
THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. - Monte Ray Rapstad, born Jan. 9, 1950, to Lewis and LaVerne Rapstad in Billings, Mont., died at his home following a short illness with cancer on May 19, 1999.
Monte graduated from Park County High School in 1968, entered the Army and was honorably discharged from the elite special forces, the Green Berets. His certified registered nurse anesthetist degree from Miles City, Mont., brought Monte to Thermopolis in 1976 and he retired from Hot Springs Memorial Hospital in February of this year. Monte was a member of the B.P.O.E. No. 1746, Eagles No. 1884, National Rifle Association, North American Hunting Club and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He was an avid and fair sportsman, he loved to fly fish, and hunt elk, deer and antelope. All sports captured his attention and he usually made better calls than the referees.
Monte was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Daniel. Survivors include: son and daughter, Ben and Jennifer, and grandson, Dalton Rapstad of Tempe, Ariz.; lifemate, Linda Binkley, her daughter, Trisha Pierce and grandson, Christopher Risk; his former wife, Sharon Rapstad of Las Vegas; his sister in Minneapolis, Jeannie Rapstad; half-brother, Larry Rapstad and half-sister, Debra Eisle, both of Montana; Lewis Rapstad of Montana, Monte's father; and mother, LaVerne Burkenstock.
Memorial Service will be in Thermopolis, July 23, 2 p.m. at the Community Church, 244 N. Sixth St. Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund at Pinnacle Bank, 125 S. Fifth.
Thank you Dr. Miller, thank you town of Thermopolis and thank you surrounding communities. Monte was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Carmel E. Romans
LIVINGSTON - Carmel E. Romans, 80, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Livingston Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 3, in the chapel of the Franzen-Davis Funeral Home with interment in Park View Memorial Gardens south of Livingston.

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Florence M. Weber, 92, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at Sheridan Manor.

John W. 'Jack' Jewell
LEWISTOWN - John W. "Jack" Jewell, 90, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Graveside Services and inurnment will be at a later date in Central Montana Memorial Gardens. Creel Funeral Home is in charge.

GARDINER - James A. "Jim" Gallaher, 63, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 2, at the Gardiner Baptist Church with interment in the Jardine cemetery. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home of Livingston is in charge.
Valentine John Haman Jr.
On Monday June 28, 1999, Valentine (Pinky) Haman joined his loving wife, Frances, in eternal glory. Even though the last several years presented Val with many physical challenges, his attitude and cheery disposition comforted and inspired all those around him. Val accepted those challenges with courage, determination and a smile or joke for everyone.
Val was born May 1, 1926, in Fromberg, to Valentine and Leah (Keiser) Haman. He was joined by his brothers and sisters, Leah (Albert) Wegner of Mesa, Wash., Robert (Hannah) Haman, Christina (Henry) Stieber of Hardin, Shirley (Leo) Reiter of Huntley, Roger (Deb) Haman, Peggy Haman, Jim (Kathy) Haman of Park City. His education was completed in the Fromberg-Bridger area at which time he moved to Billings where he met his bride, Frances Frank. They were married
Dec. 3, 1949, and were blessed with their devoted children, Gregory (Laura) Haman and Glenda Jo (Frank) Holbrook.
Val worked 35 years at Pierce Packing Co. and made many friends and always looked forward to the annual breakfast meetings with his co-workers. When his employment at Pierce ended, he began another career as a school bus driver. His hard work ethic always saw him working at least two jobs at any given time.
Family and friends were always rewarded with produce from his well-tended garden. In later years he enjoyed canning and preserving his harvest. His hobbies included camping, fishing, polka music, collecting and recycling!
Val was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Douglas; and his wife Frances. His memory is celebrated by his children, Gregg and Laura Haman, Glenda and Frank Holbrook; grandchildren, Nathan and Leza Haman, Sarah Haman, Andy Haman, Joseph and Bryant Ortiz, Preston Haman, Philip and Marlo Holbrook; and great-granddaughter, Abby Holbrook. Also surviving are several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, friends and neighbors. A new friend who will be missed is his Aspen Meadows roommate, Eugene Walker and his family.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, at Pilgrim Congregational Church (409 S. 36th St.) with interment in Mountview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Pilgrim Congregational Church, Easter Seals, or the charity of one's choice. His quick wit and ready smile will be missed by all! We'll see you soon, Dad. Claude Roy Hookham
LIVINGSTON - Claude Roy Hookham, 94, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Livingston Memorial Hospital.
Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge.
John Vincent Meyer
John passed away Sunday, June 27, 1999. He was 19 years old. On Oct. 18, 1979, John blessed the home of Joan and Vincent Meyer in Billings. A bright and happy child, he showed gifts in art and music, including piano, trumpet, guitar, and song-writing. John had a wonderful sense of humor and wrote clever short stories. He sang and acted in community productions of "The King and I, " "Jack and the Beanstalk, " and "Beauty and the Beast." He loved to perform magic tricks for others and became very adept. John's interest in jazz guitar led him to Interlochen Music Camp for the summer in 1998. John was a senior at the John Woolman School in California. He was preparing to attend the University of Portland this fall.
John is survived by his father, Vincent Meyer; his mother, Joan Meyer Nye; his stepfather, Jerrold Nye; grandmother, Julia Meyer; sisters, Jennifer Nye and Cynthia Jackson; his aunts and uncles, Sally Jacobsen, Lewis and Pat Heimbigner, Lura Cenzano, Fred and Ann Meyer; great-aunt, Preston Pethtel; and many cousins, including Paula and Art Niemi, Claire Jacobsen, Hans Jacobsen, Tamara Heimbigner, Brenda Cayton, Fred Cenzano, Thomas Meyer, Gordon Meyer and Stephanie Niemi.
His memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, where John sang in the children's choirs and rang in the youth bell choirs, at Third Avenue North and North 27th Street in downtown Billings. The time is 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 1999, with reception following in the church. Interment services will be at the Conrad Memorial cemetery in Kalispell at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, 1999, where John will join maternal great-grandparents.

Mollie P. Sill
MADELIA, Minn. - Mollie P. Sill, 55, formerly of Billings and Bridger, Mont., died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at the Madelia Community Hospital.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at the Pilgrim Funeral Home and one hour before services at Salem Lutheran Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 2, at the church with interment in the Riverside cemetery.
Harry Abbott
GLENDIVE - Harry Abbott, 69, formerly of Lewistown, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at the Eastern Montana Veterans Nursing Home.

Joan A. Knudtson
SIDNEY - Funeral services for Joan A. Knudtson, 76, Sidney, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Cremation will follow services with interment at a later date at Big Lake cemetery, Homestead, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Joan was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Froid, the daughter of John and Esther (Strandlund) Wulf. She grew up and attended schools in Froid and nursing school in Billings. She was united in marriage to Roscoe Knudtson on Oct. 22, 1943, in Froid. They made their home in Tacoma, Wash., where Roscoe was stationed until 1946. Then they made their home in Homestead until 1971 when they moved to Sidney. Her husband, Roscoe, died in October of 1985, and Joan has remained in Sidney.
Joan was a member of the Pella Lutheran Church in Sidney and the American Legion Auxiliary in Homestead. She enjoyed reading, garden, doing crossword puzzles, and playing scrabble.
Joan died at her home, Wednesday, July 28, 1999.
Surviving her are: two daughters, Deborah and husband, Ray Miles of Montrose, Colo., and Mary Beth Quam of Rapid City, S.D.; three brothers, Homer Wulf of Columbia Falls, Farrell Wulf of St. Paul, Minn., and Gordon Wulf of Red Bluff, Calif.; four sisters, Winifred James of Miles City, Beverly Knick of Plentywood, Roma Porta of Froid, and Meredith Holgersen of Roanoke, Texas; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe; her parents; an infant sister, Priscilla; and a sister, Marlys White.

Beryl B. Samel
Beryl B. Samel, 65, passed away Thursday, July 29, 1999, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Beryl was born Oct. 7, 1933, in Bismarck, N.D., to George and Annabelle (Salting) Bartlett.
Beryl and W. Arthur Samel were united in marriage on May 29, 1958, in Billings and together they had three sons. Arthur preceded her in death in 1982.
She is survived by her mother, Florence Bartlett; three sons: Rod (Marcy) Samel of Aurora, Colo.; Greg and Brian Samel, both of Billings; two brothers: William (Kay) Bartlett of Billings and George (Mona) Bartlett of Newton, Ala.; numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by numerous loving friends.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999, at the Mayflower Congregational Church on the corner of Rehberg and Poly Drive. Memorials can be made to Big Sky Hospice. Affordable Alternative Cremation & Burial Services is in charge of arrangements.
Esther Steele
Esther Ella Johnson Steele died July 29, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital. She was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Killdeer, N.D., to Edna Lauser and Frank Johnson. She attended school in Oakdale, N.D., and lived in the country until she moved to Billings with her family in 1937.
During World War II Esther worked in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., and was married
to Arnold Winslow. They were divorced and Esther returned to Billings to work at Pierce Packing Co. where she met Warren James Steele. They were married
in 1946.
From 1968 to 1976, Esther and Warren owned and operated motels in North Bend and Aberdeen, Wash. They retired to Billings and were married
almost 53 years.
Esther is survived by her husband, Warren; her son, Leonard Winslow and his wife, Patti of Seattle; her daughter, Loretta Watson of Dallas; her sisters, Alma Albu, Elizabeth Scheafer, and Lorene Huvaere, all of Billings; her brother, Lawrence of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Marvin and Oscar Johnson.
Esther was an ardent reader and an excellent cook. Her family dinners are legend. She enjoyed a special rapport with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. To all her nieces and nephews she was "Aunt Essie."
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.
