Geraldine D. 'Jerry' Chapman
Jerry Chapman, 89, of Billings, passed away Sunday, May 23, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital.
She was born in Hardin on Feb. 25, 1910, to Francis E. Bateman and Cora Weeks Bateman. At a young age she lived with her sister, Florence, and husband, Floyd Rousseau, on a homestead outside of Columbus. Later she moved with her mother to Salt Lake City, then to Los Angeles, where she graduated from high school.
She met and married
her first husband, Archie West, in Texas and they had one son, Don West. In 1934 she married
Kenneth L. Chapman in Basin, Wyo. They moved to Cody, Wyo., where they lived for many happy years and where their two children, Darryl and Diane were born.
The family moved to Billings in 1952, where Kenneth worked for Northern Pacific Transport and Jerry worked for the J.C. Penney Co.. Kenneth passed away in June, 1965 and Jerry retired from J.C. Penney in 1970.
Jerry was a devoted wife and mother, and was always there for her family and friends. She was a hard-working, private and independent woman who loved music, dancing, Harley motorcycles and her pets.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Flola and Florence; and her husband, Kenneth. Survivors include her two sons, Don West and Darryl Chapman; her daughter, Diane and husband, Allan Hicks; and grandsons, Mike Chapman, Nathan and Jonathan Hicks.
Visitation will begin 2 p.m. Thursday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist. Friends may gather Friday morning, May 28, 1999, at the Funeral Home for graveside services at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The procession will leave at 11 a.m.
James David Mitchell
James David Mitchell was born June 4, 1915, in Butte, the son of Frank and Mary (McVeigh) Mitchell. He died at the age of 83 on Tuesday, May 25, 1999, in Billings.
Jim attended schools in Butte, Mount Angel, Ore., and Carroll College in Helena, graduating from Carroll in 1938. While teaching high school in Hobson, he continued his educational pursuit, receiving a Master's Degree from the University of Montana in 1942.
On Dec. 28, 1946, Jim was united in marriage to Lois Marquardt in Billings.
Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1942 receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. He served as the Chief of the V.A. Guidance Center at Eastern Montana College from 1945 until 1951. From 1951 to 1955, Jim served as the Personnel Officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Billings. In 1955 he transferred to the Indian Health Service and served as Area Personnel Officer until his retirement in 1974.
Jim was a very active member of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, St. Pius X and St. Thomas The Apostle Churches, Holy Name Society and Legion of Mary and will be remembered by many for his devotion to the Rosary. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veteran's Organization.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lois (Marquardt) Mitchell; five sons, Robert (Sue) of Boulder, Colo., James P. of Lewistown, Thomas of Swan Lake, Dennis (Peggy) of Billings, and Michael (Debbie) of Portland, Ore.; nine daughters, Barbara (Fred) Zavodny of Kalispell, Mary (Tom) Donohue of Austin, Texas, Cele McKaig of Billings, Margaret (George) Ahlin of Bonner, Patricia (Bo) Goodell of Butte, Joan (Wade) Parker of Westminster, Calif., Teresa (Matt) O'Neill of Portland, Dolores Mitchell (John Vogel) of Portland, and Rita (Douglas) Beck of Great Falls; 17 grandchildren, Sean, Tara, Sadie, Nathan, Katie, Patrick, and Johanna Mitchell, Jeremy, and Heather McKaig, Lynette Zavodny, Christine Ahlin, Shannon and Dylan Goodell, Rachel and Ryan Parker, and Jacob and Kyle Beck.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank and Patrick; sisters, Marie Duffy and Margaret Beirne; son-in-law, Bill McKaig.
On Thursday, May 27, 1999, there will be a Vigil Service at Dahl Funeral Chapel, 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Friday 3 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church. On Saturday, May 29, there will be a Funeral Mass in Butte at St. Anne's Church with interment in Holy Cross cemetery in Butte. Don Harrison Greenley
Don Harrison Greenley, 79, of Billings died May 25, 1999, in the family home after an extended illness.
He was born in Waverly, Iowa, on Oct. 31, 1919, to Hilda and Robert Harrison Greenley. He attended schools in Minneapolis, Minn., Sidney, and graduated from Billings High School in 1937. He attended Rocky Mountain College under a football scholarship until family needs required his attention.
On Jan. 23, 1942, Don enlisted as a private in the Army Air Corps and advanced to sergeant while with the Fourth Air Force in San Francisco, Calif. He volunteered for pilot training and won his wings at Luke Field, Ariz., Nov. 3, 1943. He was a P-38 fighter pilot in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his combat proficiency at Ploesti, Romania, on May 18, 1944. His fighter squadron was the 94th Fighter Squadron known as the "Hat in the Ring Gang, " made famous by World War I pilot, Eddie Rickenbacker. He also piloted P-51, P-47 and was a test pilot for the P-80 "Shooting Star, " the first combat jet.
Don married
Roberta "Jeanne" Loudermilk on June 27, 1947. They had two children, David and Robin.
Don worked for the office of the city engineer of Billings as a surveyor prior to his military service. After the military, he was superintendent of Billings Park Department and then became Distribution Superintendent for the Billings Water Department. He retired after 37 years. He then went to work with Northwest Pipe Company as a sales representative for 10 years.
He enjoyed camping and boating at Hebgen Lake and fly fishing and hunting in the Stillwater River area.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; his son, David and wife, Angel of Billings; his daughter, Robin and husband, Richard Lennemann of Bozeman; four grandchildren, Bob Blixt of Denver, Colo., Shelby Blixt and Ben Blixt of Bozeman and Don "Scooter" Greenley II of Tempe, Ariz.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice or a charity of choice.
The family would especially like to thank Big Sky Hospice, Professional Nursing Pool and Personnel, and Western Medical Service for their support and nursing care.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at Smith's West Funeral Chapel, 304 34th St. W. at 2 p.m. Friday, May 28, 1999.
Pius A. 'Pete' Huschka
GLENDIVE - Pius A. "Pete" Huschka, age 68, of Glendive, died on Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the Glendive Medical Center after a long courageous battle with leukemia.
Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 1999, at the chapel of Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 24, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Rite of Committal with military honors will be in the Dawson Memorial cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Pete was born on Sept. 13, 1930, in South Heart, N.D., the son of Anton and Elizabeth (Miller) Huschka. He was raised and educated in South Heart. He served overseas in the U.S. Army from October of 1951 until September of 1953 as a corporal on a special demolition team and in part as an equipment operator stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
Following his discharge, he returned to his parents' home in South Heart. On Feb. 16, 1954, he married
Lorraine Dolajak in Dickinson, N.D. They moved to Miles City that year and began work for L.P. Anderson shortly thereafter. They moved to Glendive to manage the branch of L.P. Anderson Contractors in August 1964 where they have resided since. In 1982, he assumed joint ownership of the Glendive and Belfield branches of L.P. Anderson Contractors Inc. Pete was part owner of S&H Rentals of Glendive.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1125 and had held the position of Post Commander for multiple terms. He was also a member of the American Legion for 17 years, the Elks Club for 25 years, the Moose Lodge and Sacred Heart Church.
Pete loved restoring John Deere tractors as well as teasing and playing with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of Glendive and their seven children: Keith and Julie Huschka of Dickinson, Geralyn and Don Hoffman of Helena, Karen and LaVaine Kraft of Phoenix, Ariz., Gerald and Janine Huschka of Glendive, Angela and Steve Caruso of Helena, Gina Huschka of Littleton, Colo., and Cory Huschka and Ronni Orth of Bozeman; four grandchildren, Padyn, Skylar and Baylee Huschka of Glendive and Brett Hoffman of Helena; four stepdaughters, Sarah and Raechel Peterson of Dickinson and Melissa and Katy Hoffman of Carson City, Nev.; one brother, Lawrence and Hilda Huschka of Dickinson; three sisters, Dorothy and Ralph Brinster of Dickinson, Martha Frank of New England, N.D., and Caroline and George J. Weiler of Bowman, N.D.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and a brother-in-law.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to one of the branches of Home on the Range.
Gene Vannatta
CULBERTSON - Mass of Christian Burial for Gene Vannatta, 51, Culbertson, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Culbertson, with Father Michael Schneider, celebrant and Father Greg Staudinger and Father Ned Shinnick as co-celebrants. Music will be provided by Mary Waagen, Tara Postovit, Allison, Andrea and Mara Vannatta. Casketbearers will be: Michael, Lee, Lane, Marlyn, Dwight Vannatta, Paul, Joe and Ernie Picard. Honorary Casketbearers will be: All of Gene's many friends including: Bart Bertino, Ed Gannon, Rick Knick, John Mann, Ron Olsen, Bob Potter, Fred Spartz and Mike Weeks. Ushers will be the Knights of Columbus. Christian Wake Services were Friday, May 21, 1999, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Culbertson. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery, Culbertson, under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.
Gene David Vannatta was born on Jan. 20, 1948, in Williston, N.D., to parents, Edward M. and Hilda (Kirkvold) Vannatta. Gene grew up and attended school and graduated frown Bainville High School. He attended UND in Williston for one year and Eastern Montana College in Billings for two years. Gene was united in marriage to Bev Picard at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Sept. 6, 1969, in Bainville.
He worked for the Montana Department of Highways and moved back to Culbertson in 1971. In 1972, he worked for Earl Weeks, Culbertson Implement, later named Prairie Ag Sales & Service Inc. In 1978, Gene became owner/manager.
Gene was very involved in the Catholic church including working many cursillos in the area and recently became a fourth degree Knight Monsignor Thomas Hennessy, Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in his community and was especially dedicated to the Roosevelt Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home, having served as chairman of the Hospital Board for many years.
Through his John Deere dealership, he formed lasting relationships with all those he came in contact with. Gene will be remembered for his sense of humor, his perseverance, honesty and sincerity. He was a very charismatic person.
Gene was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 1993. He had a bone marrow transplant at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, in February of 1994. Through his battle with cancer and further complications, some of Gene's greatest qualities were brought out - his faith, courage and hope.
Gene died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Roosevelt Memorial Hospital, Culbertson.
Gene is survived by his wife and caregiver, Bev in Culbertson; his four children: Allison, Billings; Andrea, Missoula; Michael and Mara of the family home; one grandchild, Jacob; his brothers and sisters: Laura Jean (Larry) Rosencrans of Tioga, N.D., Marlyn (Karen) Vannatta of Bainville, Shirley (Leo) Haberlack of Flagstaff, Ariz., Verian (Dick) Wilke of Everett, Wash., Dwight (Sheila) Vannatta of Bainville, LaVonne (Henry) Franken of Des Moines, Iowa, Lee (Lorna) Vannatta of Froid, and Lane (Kimber) Vannatta of Hoonah, Alaska; and numerous nieces, nephews and Godchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jarold and Wesley.
He was respected and loved by all - because he respected and loved others first.
Gloria Jourdan
On the 20th day of May, 1999, at Billings Deaconess Hospital, Gloria Jourdan went to be with the Lord in Heaven after a long illness. Gloria Robin Nelson was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Chicago. Her family then moved to Wisconsin for a short time before settling in Denver. While attending college at Colorado State University in Fort Collins she met Russel Jourdan. They were married
June 14, 1946. They lived in Omaha until 1949 and then moved back to Fort Collins until 1952. They lived as an Air Force family from 1952 until 1955. They moved to Billings in 1955 and made it their home.
Gloria was first and foremost a loving wife and a caring mother. She found the most pleasure in spending time with her family. She also loved her many dogs, cats, and birds. She was a green thumb and had many houseplants. Her friends were also very important to her. She enjoyed traveling and doing crossword puzzles. She brought love to this earth throughout her whole life. Gloria will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She made this world a better place and has now moved on to an even better place. She passed away in comfort and in peace, knowing that she had raised a loving, kind, and close family. Gloria and Russel had a long, happy marriage. She had a full, prosperous life and we find peace in knowing that her suffering is over.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Russel, and her children: Michael and his wife, Anne of Billings; Merilu and her husband, Tim of Laurel; David and his wife, Gayle of Hillsboro, Ore.; Jason of Clyde Park; and Robert of Rapid City, S.D. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gloria will be with us all forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 537 Grand Ave., in Billings, at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Animal Welfare League, or the St. Labre Mission.
Lori Renee Metcalf
SARPY CREEK - Lori Renee Metcalf, 37 of the Sarpy Creek area, died Wednesday May 19, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Lori was born April 29, 1962, in Forsyth, the daughter of Larry and Sharon Seader Williams. She spent her youth and attended schools in Hysham, graduating from Hysham High School.
On March 29, 1980, Lori married
Mark Metcalf in Hysham. They lived on the Williams Ranch on Sarpy Creek with Lori later working at Jack's IGA in Forsyth for a number of years. She worked various jobs in Hysham before working for the Treasure County Attorney's Office. In 1994, Lori worked for the Rosebud County Attorney's Office as a legal secretary. Lori was currently employed there at the time of her death.
Lori enjoyed bowling, dancing, golf, collecting antiques, doing ceramics and playing volleyball. She loved to spend time with her family, friends and especially with her "Little Princess."
She is survived by her husband, Mark of Sarpy Creek; her children, Angela Jane Metcalf, Damion Michael Metcalf, Sara Renee Metcalf, all of the family home; her granddaughter, Shayna Jo; her parents, Larry and Sharon Williams of Hysham; her grandmother, Ethel Williams of Hysham; two sisters, Vicky Rau and her husband, Don of Glendive, Melissa Welch and husband, Richard of Hysham; two brothers, Michael Williams and his wife, Nicole of Billings, Derek Williams of Hysham; father and mother-in-law, Willis and Rosemary Metcalf of Durand, Wis.; five sisters-in-law, Nancy Endle, Mary Rasmussen, Kathy Woods, Patricia Bignell and Jane Fedie; four brothers-in-law, Steve, Dave, Bill and Daniel Metcalf, all of the Durand area; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hysham. Interment will follow in the Hysham cemetery. Beals Mortuary of Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.
Olliene McFarren
Olliene McFarren 82, of Billings, died May 20, 1999, at Valley Health Care Center. She was born in Taylor, Neb., daughter of Charles E. and Beryl A. (Young) Starke on June 5, 1916. Olliene was united in marriage to George W. McFarren on Sept. 30, 1933, in Laurel.
Olliene was employed as a bookkeeper at K-Mart automotive department. Her hobbies included needlework and golf.
She is survived by a son, Jack McFarren; a daughter, Carmen Redmond and husband, Patrick of Billings; grandchildren, Shawn Redmond of Lacey, Wash., Erik, Trevor, Brett and Tasha McFarren, all of Billings. Olliene was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1997.
Memorial services will be held Monday, May 24, 1:30 p.m., at Dahl Funeral Chapel with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 2100 Sixth Ave. N., Billings, Mont. 59101, or St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 100 24th W., Billings, Mont. 59102. The family wants to especially thank Valley Health Care Center staff for all their care and kindness to Olliene.
Richard 'Drew' Binks
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Richard Andrew "Drew" Thomas Binks passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at his home, at the age of 5.
Drew was born on March 20, 1994, to Susie Binks of Sheridan. He loved baseball, both at the "Big Hospital" and at "Dr. Mary's office"; he brought smiles and joy to everyone who met him. He ambushed everyone with his water gun, power rangers and his delight in making a new friend laugh. The people who knew and cared for Drew during his year of intense chemotherapy found him to be a wonderful and remarkable boy. He was always eager to play; brave and affectionate; smiling and hopeful. He was a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include his mother, Susie Binks; his grandparents, Dick and Phyllis Binks of San Antonio, Texas; his uncle and aunt, Rick and Judy Binks of Casper; and his uncle and aunt, Frank and Nancy Lyman of Cheyenne.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
