Albert J. Schell
TRACY, Calif. - Albert J. Schell, age 78, formerly of Hardin, Mont., passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at his home in Tracy, Calif.
He was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Denver, Colo., the son of Albert Jake and Agnes Schell and the third of six children. When he was very young they moved to Portland, Ore., temporarily, then to Montana, living in various areas throughout the state. He spent his younger years working on farms in the Fairview, Sidney, Forsyth and Hardin areas.
On May 19, 1941, Albert married
Frieda Seader in Sidney and continued working on various farms. In 1943 they moved to Hardin and he went to work for Holly Sugar Corporation. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 20, 1945 and was stationed in the Pacific Islands during WW II. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 27, 1946 and returned to Hardin and went back to work at Holly. In 1972, when Holly Sugar closed their factory in Hardin, he was transferred to Tracy, Calif., and continued working there until he retired in 1982.
Frieda died on April 25, 1981 in Tracy. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Elmer and Wally.
On August 22, 1984, he married
Betty Brandrup in Reno, Nev. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Tracy; three daughters, Alberta (Bertie) and husband, Gary Noyes of Billings, Mont., Judy and husband, Eugene Kirschenmann of Libby, Mont., and Debbie Renner Schell of Libby, Mont.. Four step-children, Vicki and husband, Gary Hatmaker of Alabama, Jackie Harris of San Francisco, Calif., Blair and wife, Chris of Texas, and Monty and wife, Carene of Tracy; six grandchildren: Rhonda Diefenderfer and her husband, Steve of Laurel, Mont., Shelly Boeckel of Billings, Mont., Jeff Kirschemann of Missoula, Mont., Scott Kirschenmann and wife, Hope of Libby, Mont., Shannon Schieler and husband, Rodney of Libby, Mont., Tammy Massengale and husband, Cory of Libby, Mont.; 11 great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Louise Gustafson of Portland, Ore., Marge Richardson of Salem, Ore. and one brother, Bill Schell and wife, Odessa of Salem, Ore. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our dad and grandfather was well known for his argumentative nature, especially concerning politics, and his quick witted sense of humor. He loved playing cards and dice games. He was loved very much and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, in Hardin at the Bullis Mortuary. Interment will be in the Fairview cemetery with Military Honors. A Memorial Service is being held on Tuesday, January 12, in Tracy. Memorials may be sent to Hospice, c/o Tracy Community Memorial Hospital, 1420 N. Tracy Boulevard, Tracy, California 95376.
Don L. Shadley
LIVINGSTON - Don L. Shadley, 72, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Livingston Health and Rehab Center.
Cremation took place on Saturday, Jan. 9. Services and interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Mountain View cemetery. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Livingston is in charge of arrangements. Family and friends are to gather at the funeral home at 118 N. Third St. before 1:15 p.m., to proceed to the cemetery.
Johannes George Siegfried
Johannes George Siegfried, 78, of Billings died at St. Vincent's Hospital, Jan. 8, 1999. Born March 17, 1920, in Weatherford, Okla., George was the son of Fredrick and Amelia (Mohr) Siegfried. He was in the United States Army from September 1940 until he was discharged February 1946.
George was a car salesman and a used car dealer. He owned and operated George's Auto Mart for 30 years, where he made many friends.
George's passion and hobby was cars. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to travel, and cared for his family. He was also a member of the Elks, and the American Legion.
George is survived by a son, Anthony (Tony) and wife Brenda Siegfried; a daughter, Linda Carol and husband Gary Bradley, of Fort Qu' Appelle, Sask., Canada; three sisters, Rachel Schaffer of Red Lodge, Dorothy Jones and husband Del of Billings, and Emma Haaland of Billings; eight grandchildren, Tamara Fiorante and husband Nick of Regina, Sask., Sean Bradley and wife Rebecca of Toronto, Canada, Wende Hernandez and husband Alex of Calgary, Alberta Canada, Jeremy Bradley and wife Connie of Regina, Sask., and Sherran Kallstrom and husband Chad of Fort Qu' Appelle, Sask., Canada, also Megan, Sally, and Wendy Siegfried; six great-grandchildren, Casey, Mia, Madison, Nicola, Josh, and Mercedes, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Dahl Funeral Chapel, Monday Jan. 11, at 1:30 p.m. with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Merritt R. Anderson
MILES CITY - Merritt R. Anderson, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in the Miles City Friendship Villa Care Center.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services and interment will be at a later date in North Dakota. Bullis-Graves Memorial Chapel is in charge.
Phil M. Blyton
FISHTAIL - Phil M. Blyton, 84, of Fishtail, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at the Stillwater Community Hospital, after a long illness of emphysema and lung cancer.
Phil was born June 4, 1914, at Wibaux, to Ray and Minnie Prill Blyton on their farm. He attended the Woodville grade school near his home and high school in Wibaux. On Jan. 5, 1942, Phil and Mamie Mae Mussetter were married
at Miles City. They went to live on the farm at Wibaux, and Glendive until 1948. Phil worked at Hilgers garage in Glendive as a mechanic where he received a mechanic certificate from the Chevrolet Corporation.
Phil was a person who seemed to adapt himself to any sort of a job he had to do - whether it be ranch work, a clerk in a store or being a mechanic. He suffered with asthma as a child, but he found he could live quite comfortably in higher altitudes than those of Eastern Montana. During the summers he worked on ranches near Columbus and Absarokee. He had worked on his brother Floyd's dairy farm in Washington State during WWII.
He wasn't accepted into the military service because of his health and thus Phil served his country by delivering milk to homes in the Tacoma area. He followed the trade of mechanic work most of his life working with Johnny Barr and the Rhyneer family at the Stillwater Garage. He also worked for Bud Chitwood at the Fishtail General Store for nine years, Ted Haugen drilling water wells throughout Stillwater County and Bob Patterson doing custom bailing.
After retiring he helped Mae with her mail route and did small mechanic jobs, like lawn mowers and small engines.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Floyd; and one nephew, Raymond.
Survivors include his wife Mae of Fishtail; a daughter, Linda Blyton of Fishtail; three nephews, Leonard, Bruce and Boyd Blyton; a sister-in-law, Mary Blyton; a niece, Ayner Browning all of Washington State, and seven grandnieces and nephews and several cousins.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Fishtail Community Center (Hanna Hall). Interment will be in the Nye cemetery.
Smith Funeral Chapel of Columbus was in charge of arrangments.
Carmen Hammond Kerrick Couture
It was with relief that Carmen Couture went to meet her Maker on Jan. 7, 1999, at age 66.
Carmen Lorraine Hammond was born on Feb. 28, 1932, in Circle, to Ted and Myrl Phillips Hammond. She grew up and attended school in both Circle and Glendive and, after traveling around some, settled in Billings in the mid-'50s where she worked as a waitress and barmaid at the Porterhouse and the Horseshoe Club among others. From 1964 to 1978 Carmen was married
to Phil Kerrick. In 1992 she had a debilitating cerebral hemorrhage and, as a result, moved into Western Manor where she was a good sport for the last six years. She loved the color red, and she loved to dance. She was treasured, and she will be sorely missed.
Survivors include her sister, Dee Jarland; brother, Carrol Hammond; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceasing her were her grandmother, Edith M. Phillips; mother, Myrl Larsen; father, Ted Hammond; and sister, Gayle Walker.
Visitation will be held 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel with cremation to follow. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Robert 'Bob' DeVries
ROBERTS - Robert "Bob" DeVries, 72, a longtime resident of Roberts, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings following a brief illness.
Born in Columbus on March 28, 1926, he was a son of William and Annie DeVries. Bob farmed most of his life in the Roberts area. He enjoyed his meat cutting and butchering, and roasting pigs for family barbecues and other community events. He also enjoyed fishing, especially his annual June trip to the Tongue River.
On Sept. 26, 1947, Bob was married
to Verna Long in the Billings Methodist Church parsonage. Bob and Verna spent 51 great years together. His family and friends were a vital part of his life. He was loved by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.
Bob was very active in the Roberts United Methodist Church. He was currently a director of the Carbon-Stillwater Farm Bureau and was a member of the Elks and Eagles Lodges of Red Lodge. He was a past director of the Montana Bank of Red Lodge, and during his nine-year tenure on the Roberts School Board he saw his three children graduate from Roberts High School.
Survivors include his wife, Verna DeVries of Roberts; one son, Roly and his wife, Chris of Roberts; two daughters and their husbands, Verdine and Rick White, and Marilyn and Bill Kennedy, all of Joliet; six grandchildren, Jenny, Brenda, Karla, Becky, Randy, and Destiny; two step-grandsons, Doug and David Isler; one step-great-grandson, Dustin Isler; one brother, Richard of Shepherd; three sisters, Lillian Zagurski of Billings, Angie Thom of Laurel, and Florence Sauther of Spokane, Wash.; and many special nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and many great friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the Roberts United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Roberts cemetery, with the Olcott Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd G. Eastlick
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Lloyd G. Eastlick, 80, formally of Park City, Mont., died Dec. 24, 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie; sister, Hazel Williams of Billings; and brothers, Earl (Shirley) of Columbus, Mont., and Melvin (Marguerite) of Yuma, Ariz.
Services and interment were held in St. Paul.
Theodore C. Ereaux
MALTA - Theodore C. "Ted" Ereaux, 87, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at the Philips County Hospital of natural causes.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, at Adams Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with interment in the Malta cemetery.
Lloyd E. Frazer
Lloyd E. Frazer, 76, of Billings, passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 7, 1999, at Deaconess Medical Center. He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Crow Agency, the son of Charles A. and Mabel (Wyse) Frazer.
The family moved to Ohio when he was six, and Lloyd graduated from high school in Fayette, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. While serving in WWII, he was listed as missing in action. Lloyd was a gunner on a B-26 shot down over France and walked through the underground to Gibraltar. He was later awarded with the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
On March 29, 1948, he married
Margaret Romee and they had three children. Lloyd retired from the USAF in 1964 after 20 years of dedicated service. He and his wife owned and operated a Texaco station in Billings for several years. They later moved near Joliet, where they raised hogs and cattle for over 10 years until ill health caused Lloyd to retire. He suffered a severe stroke in May of 1997 and had since lived at the veterans nursing home in Miles City and Western Manor in Billings.
Lloyd enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and St. Pius X Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Linda and Diane.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Margaret; his daughter, Jacqueline Davidson and her husband, Walt; his grandson, Ross and his wife, Kari; his granddaughter, Kami; three brothers, Charles and his wife, Carmen, Howard and his wife, Helen, and Jim and his wife, Cara; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Church with Rite of Committal with military honors in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the St. Pius X Church Building Fund or the charity of one's choice.
Alvin Clarence Hochhalter
GREAT FALLS - Alvin Clarence Hochhalter, 81, formally of Hardin, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at his home of natural causes.
Alvin was born May 31, 1917, in Leith, N.D. He moved with his family to Hardin in 1938 and graduated from Coyne Electrical School in March 1939. He received his 40-year pin from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 122 before retiring.
He entered the Army on Oct. 8, 1941, and went to boot camp in California. He was discharged on Feb. 7, 1945, as a Tech. Sgt. 5. He was in the Battery D 54th Training Battalion at Camp Cullen, Calif.
On June 6, 1945, he was united in marriage to Esther Greenwald in Billings. In 1952, they moved to Great Falls where he was the owner of the Jensen Apartments and the Stukey Apartments.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of Great Falls; sons, Clarence Hochhalter of Great Falls, Denis Hochhalter of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Brian Hochhalter of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Lydia Fried and Alvina Myers, both of Hardin, and Eva Hillius of Elgin, N.D.; brothers, Henry Hochhalter of Hardin and Edward Hochhalter of Olympia, Wash.; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Dale, in 1952.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at the Custer Battlefield National cemetery. Croxford & Sons Funeral Home of Great Falls is in charge of arrangements.
Oscar J. Howard
LEWISTOWN - Oscar J. Howard, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at the Central Montana Hospital of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, in the Cloyd Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Central Montana Memorial Gardens.
Michele Lynn (Phillips) Moffet
Michele Lynn (Phillips) Moffet, 33, of Billings, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Saint Vincent Hospital. She was born in Billings on April 27, 1965, to her very proud and grateful parents, Wilbur and Linda Phillips, both of Billings.
Educated in Billings, Michele was most content as a wife and mother. She was united in marriage with Blake Moffet on July 21, 1984. Michele, you loved the children and me so very much. We all loved you as much as life itself. In your own ways you helped to make us strong. We will love and miss you for the rest of our lives and you will live in our hearts forever.
Michele was a free spirit who was not afraid to speak her mind. Her number one priority in life was raising her two young children, Preston, 12 years old, and Ariel, 7 years old. She was a very caring and loving mother. We will miss you so much, Mom. Michele was involved in several fund-raising activities to help her children and others to participate in various youth programs. Her children's enjoyment was her gratification. Her other interests included camping, boating, skiing, swimming, surfing the Internet, working in her vegetable and rose gardens, and caring for her pets.
In addition to her husband, Blake, and children, Preston and Ariel, she is survived by her parents, Wilbur and Linda Phillips; her two older brothers, Mike Phillips and Rick Phillips and his wife, Erin; her mother and father-in-law, Thomas and Sheri Moffet, all of Billings; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, with whom she kept in contact with because of her family oriented nature. Michele was preceded in death by her grandparents of Rawlins and Baggs, Wyo., and her cousins, Victor Ray and Ike Phillips.
We are so thankful that God shared Michele with our families during her short stay in this world. She was truly a shining light in her Mom and Dad's life. Our sadness, though very deep-seated, turns to comfort knowing she is now in Heavenly Peace with our Lord Jesus Christ. Michele, we will all miss you so very much.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Alderson Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Milous Repka officiating. Interment will follow in Mountview cemetery.

GLASGOW - Ernest Lee Page, 59, of Glasgow, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Bell Mortuary Chapel with interment in Rocky Ford, Colo.
