Alfred Clarence Burgener
(1932-1999)
Our loving husband, father, grandpa, and friend Alfred Clarence Burgener passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Monday, June 21, 1999, after fighting a brave battle with cancer. Alfred was born April 10, 1932, in Powell, Wyo., the son of Albert and Lottie Burgener. He graduated from Powell High School in 1950 and went on to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1951, serving during the Korean War. On Dec. 12, 1953, he married
Dorothy Jean Waldron in Portland, Ore. In January of 1955 they moved to Billings where they raised their seven children.
Al worked for Hoppers Floral, Pierce Packing Co. and the USDA. He retired from the Department of Agriculture in 1997 after 22 years as a meat inspector, the last 12 years were at Highline Packing in Malta.
Al will be remembered for the special times we spent with him fishing, camping, and bowling. He also enjoyed gardening and working crossword puzzles. Most of all he was a very talented mechanic and fix-it man, an attribute that his wife, all of his children, grandchildren, and friends are very grateful for because he was a very dedicated family man and was always there when we needed him. We all have at least one fond memory of being "rescued" by him.
Alfred leaves behind his devoted wife of 45 years, Dorothy of Billings, and six daughters and their families: Paula and Fred Batson, Lisa and Jessica of Lakewood, Colo.; Susan and Ronald Hiller, Dustin Hiller, and Tyler Hirschi of Billings; Sandra and Richard Simon, Matthew, Kellie, Amanda and William of Lynnwood, Wash.; Lori Burgener and her son, Austin Tuss of Joliet; Gail and Scott Turner, Michael and Maclean of Billings; and Mary and John Hunt, Jared, Hillary and Karis of Billings.
Also surviving is his mother, Lottie Burgener of Powell; four sisters: Louise Huntington of Red Lodge; Dorothy Lee (Vance) Larkin of Cody, Wyo.; Bonnie (Hank) Hartley of Virginia Beach, Va.; Willa Mae (James) Fleming of Powell; and also two brothers, Thomas (Carolyn) Burgener of Elizabeth, Colo., and Kenneth (Valle) Burgener of Anchorage, Alaska; special family friend, Gordon (Short) Hirschi; as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews, and friends.
Alfred was preceded in death by his cherished son, Kirk James Burgener; his father, Albert Burgener; a brother, Ronald Burgener; and a sister, Esther Mering.
God saw he was getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around him and whispered "come with me." With tear-filled eyes we watched him suffer and fade away. Although we loved him deeply, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
Dad, we love you and will miss you. We will treasure our memories of you in our hearts forever.
Vigil service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Bernard's Parish with Funeral Mass at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Bernard's Parish and interment with military honors in Mountview cemetery. Ruth Padilla
On June 1, 1999, Ruth Padilla left this earth for a heavenly family reunion, with her husband of over 50 years, Lee. Also present were her son, Michael, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968; her mother and father; sisters, Helen, Berniece and Shirley. Future guests include her son, Terry, daughter, Carolyn, and their families.
Ruth came into this world on March 26, 1923, born the third daughter of Axel and Anna Edwards. Ruth hit life at a full run. Ruth had such a zest for life, evident at age 6 when her only surviving sister, Esther, threatened to get the police on Ruth if she wouldn't slow down. Mother loved to always be doing something, going somewhere. She grew up in Gladstone, Mich., the daughter of a Swedish Baptist preacher. Always remembering what a good life it was, being poor as church mice, but never even knowing it at all.
When the United States went to war, Ruth enlisted in the Army. It was while she was at Fort Baxter, in a chow line, her life would change forever. Unknown to her, she caught the eye of a handsome Army sergeant, who told his friend he was going to have her. They got married
in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, April 28, 1945, vowing that only death could separate them.
Ruth loved her children, Terry, Michael and Carolyn, and was a good mother, always at home taking care of her family, involved in everything they were, and everything Lee was. When Lee died in 1995, a part of her died, what else could happen after 50 years together. Ruth became very close to Carolyn as her daughter devoted herself to help her mom. Ruth loved attending her son Terry's church and had a wonderful spiritual experience the Friday before she died. She said I want to go be with PaPa (Lee) I am ready to go home to heaven. God in all of His wonder and love granted her final prayer, what a wonderful God we serve.
Ruth is survived by her son, Terry, wife, Linda; grandson, Todd; granddaughter, Traci, husband, Dave and their family; granddaughter, Michelle, husband, Lon, and their family; daughter, Carolyn, and grandson, Jimmy; and other precious family and friends.
