Peter Schneider
PHOENIX - Longtime former Great Falls resident and Sidney native Peter 'Pete" Schneider, 77, died Sunday in Phoenix.
A memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ in Fairfield. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Schneider was born June 21, 1921, in Sidney. He served in the Army during World War II and was wounded in 1942, then received a Purple Heart.
In 1945, he married
Betty Miller.
He worked at Diamond T Truck Co. in Billings, then was transferred to Great Falls, where he managed the Great Falls White Truck Co. He worked for Bison Ford and retired in Lincoln. The couple divorced in 1978.
In 1979, he married
Jean Vervick.
They wintered in Arizona and summered in Polson and Missoula. Two years ago, they moved to Arizona permanently.
Survivors include his wife of Apache Junction; two daughters, Kathy Durham of Fairfield and Marlene Banninger of New York; three stepsons, Ron Vervick of Riverside, Calif., and Larry Vervick and Doug Vervick of Missoula; a brother, Dan Schneider of Sidney; five sisters, Louise Bonneau of Worden, Margaret Sherman of Kennewick, Wash., and Annie Foos, Leona Stanhope and Marie Sherman of Billings; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Margaret Slavens
Margaret Louise Slavens, 91, of Billings died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at St. John's Lutheran Home. She was born Oct. 13, 1907, in St. Thomas, N.D., the daughter of Jacob and Susanna Piel Adolph. The family moved to Delphia in 1912 and to Billings in 1922.
Margaret graduated from Billings High School in 1927 and attended Regional Normal that summer. She attended Poly Tech (Rocky Mountain College) to qualify for her teaching certificate and taught three years in one-room schools at Acton and Molt.
Margaret married
Herschel B. Slavens, Sept. 6, 1931, in Molt where they lived for 52 years. She worked for several years with Herschel at Slavens Lumber and Mercantile. When he retired as postmaster in 1967, she served as acting postmaster until 1969 when they both retired from the business. Two years after Herschel's death in 1983, she moved to Billings.
Margaret was a member of the Molt Congregational Church for many years and active in the Molt Home Demonstration Club. She was a fine seamstress and cook who enjoyed her home and family. Margaret was known as a wise woman and a loyal friend who shared her experience and her love with everyone she knew.
Survivors include two sons, Harold B. (Laraine) of Billings and William E. (Collyn) of Winter Park, Fla.; one daughter, Susannne S. (Gerald) Carman of Random Lake, Wis., and special niece, Rhua S. (Roy) Kepferle of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nine nieces; seven nephews; and many grandnieces and nephews and their families who were very dear to her. Margaret's family and many friends will miss her presence among them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel, her parents, five sisters, five brothers, and one grandchild.
Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th St. W. and St. John's. Memorials may be made to the Molt Congregational Church or Al Bedoo Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 20673, Billings, MT 59104. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
James A. Namen
PARK CITY - James A. Namen, 62, died in his home of natural causes on Saturday, May 22, 1999.
Jim was born in Missoula to John and Fern Namen. After high school he served in the Navy for twelve years. On Jan. 15, 1961, Jim married
Betty Louise Johnson. Jim had several farms in his lifetime where he enjoyed instilling in his children the value and rewards of hard work. No one could put together a holiday meal like Jim! His daughters will always remember him standing along the fence at a horse show saying "Smile - the judge will place you higher!" Jim lived life in the fast lane but his children held a special place in his heart, as did his grandchildren, Wyatt and Nichole. Jim was self-employed since 1975 in the construction business, and later in 1986 he formed a partnership with Randy Nauman. Randy was a close and cherished friend. If Jim's children need proof of his building talents, they only need to look at the homes their father built for them.
Jim is survived by his three children: Troy James Namen and his daughter Nichole Rae, Yvette Frey and husband Steve, Valerie Snell and husband Woody and their son Wyatt; and sister, Nancy Trautman and her husband Norman.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Smith Chapel in Laurel.
Alyce Helen Olson
HELENA - Alyce Helen Olson, of 1917 Peosta, Helena, passed away Saturday, May 22, 1999, at St. Peter's Hospital after a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
Alyce was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Boulder, to Walter E. and Mary E. (Woods) Cuchine. She married
Francis Allen Olson in Hawthorne, Nev., on Nov. 8, 1944.
Alyce was preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by Francis, her most beloved husband of 54 years; daughters and sons-in-law: Diana and Chris Hahn of Reedpoint, and Lynne and Bill Salisbury of Helena; and son, Charles Olson of Omaha, Neb.
Chapel services will be held at Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home, Helena, on Wednesday, May 26, at 11 a.m., with interment of cremains following at Montana State Veterans' cemetery, Fort Harrison. Following interment, a reception for family and friends will be held at the home of Lynne and Bill Salisbury, 420 Wallace, Helena.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, P.O. Box 4455, Helena, MT 59604, the Mikal Kellner Foundation for Animals, P.O. Box 389, Helena, MT 59624 or a charity of donor's choice.
Orville J. Reather
Orville J. Reather, 67 of Billings, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital.
The son of Albert and Ann Reather, he was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Dickinson, N.D. The family moved to Billings and he graduated from Billings Central.
He worked as a driver for Eddy's Bread for many years and had been a route salesman for Meadow Gold Dairy until retiring in 1994.
He married
Betty Mollett in Billings on Oct. 30, 1950. She preceded him in death in 1972. Orville married
Trena Westhuis in Billings on Nov. 3, 1973.
Orville was a member of the teamsters, he enjoyed bowling and had belonged to several leagues. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed fishing, working out doors and watching westerns. He especially enjoyed his two dogs, Nicki and Nugget.
Survivors include his wife, Trena; his mother, Ann; children: Ken Reather and his wife Lauris, Kathy Kaufman and her husband Cal, Chuck Hanson and his wife Genny, Julie Martinson, and Randy Hanson; brothers: Al and his wife, Ruth, and Ron and his wife, Sharon. He is also survived by six children: Stuart Kaufman, Kurt Kaufman, Kendra Reather, Hunter Hanson, Alicia Kister, and Courtney Martinson; and a great-grandchild, Jocelynn Kister.
He was also preceded in death by his father Albert and a sister Shirley.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist Mortuary with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Elsie Samek
Elsie Samek passed away on Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Deaconess Hospital in Billings. Mrs. Samek had lived for 80 years.
Elsie was born on Dec. 3, 1918, the youngest of five children born to Joseph and Barbara Pavlicek in Dickinson, N.D. She lived with her family on a country farm until she left as a young woman to work in the city.
Elsie was always a hard working and independent person who relied solely on herself. She worked for Sweetheart Bakery in Billings for many years until her retirement. She was close to her nieces and nephews and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and had a special bond with her great-nephew, Michael. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and two brothers.
The family would like to give special thanks to the St. John's staff for her excellent care.
Cremation has taken place and burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus cemetery in Dickinson. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
Catherine J. Young
Catherine J. Young, of Billings, died May 23, 1999, at the age of 75 at Western Manor. She was born to William D. and Nettie B. Hamilton McKeen at Lavina, where she graduated from high school. During WWII, Catherine worked at the shipyards, later at SVS in Billings, and at Yellowstone City-County Health Dept. as a PCA. Cathy was a member of OAKS, Moose, Eagles and Big Sky Polka Club of Billings and Sheridan, Mont.
Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, one sister, and her husband, Edward E. Sullivan.
Cremation was held and no memorial is planned. Inurnment will be held later at the Lavina cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, P.O. Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107-5033. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery.
Linda Diane Leone-Parr
FLORIDA KEYS - Linda Diane Parr, 46, died late Saturday evening, May 22, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Jac Parr and stepdaughter, Lacey Parr, residing in the Florida Keys. She was employed at Cruz Animal Hospital where she demonstrated her love for animals. That love was evident in her home where she raised three exotic birds, two Rottweilers and various other animals that "stopped by."
Other passions include the love to live through travel, reading, meeting new acquaintances and keeping old friends close to her heart, who will miss her deeply.
Linda was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 27, 1952, the first child of Robert J. and Janice L. Leone. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Billings, Mont., where she attended Lockwood schools, Senior and West high schools then Montana State University in Bozeman.
Her brother and sisters include Michael K. Leone, Patricia J. Schutz and Laurie A. Ballew.
Linda's death is a deeply felt loss. Her smile and laughter will always be remembered by her parents, brother and sisters and their families.
The family is holding a Memorial Service Friday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at the Lockwood Evangelical Church, 1413 Rosebud Lane, Billings.
A Memorial Service will also be held Wednesday, May 26, in the Florida Keys by her friends at Cruz Animal Hospital.
Memorials may be sent to the Humane Society or a charity of one's choice.
Marjorie S. Cooke
KALISPELL - Marjorie S. Cooke, age 86, passed away at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center, Sunday, April 18, 1999. She was born July 4, 1912, in Fort Worth, Texas, to John E. and Bette Lannes Hicks Schmidt. She attended high school and business college in Dallas.
Her hobbies included playing the organ and piano, bridge and sewing. Her interests were activities at Buffalo Hill Terrace, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marjorie married
William A. Cooke Jr. on July 28, 1935, in Dallas, Texas.
She worked for Gulf Insurance Company from completion of business school until her first child was born. Throughout her life she lived in Dallas; Billings; Denver; Oklahoma City, Okla. Then her husband retired they moved back to Billings, then settled in Dallas. Her husband died in May of 1978. She moved to Kalispell in June of 1990 to be closer to her daughter, Betty, and lived at the Buffalo Hill Terrace until the time of her death.
She was a wonderful mother, wife, homemaker, grandmother and friend to everyone she met. She never forgot a name of someone or special occasion. Everyone always said she lived up to her birthday - July 4th. She was a firecracker!
She belonged to the Episcopal Church. She also served as a Greylady at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings for many years. She is preceded in death by: husband, William A. Cooke; mother, Lannes Smith; and father, John E. Schmidt.
She is survived by: son, William M. (Mike) Cooke and wife, Joan of Austin, Texas; daughter, Betty C. Denham and husband, Thomas M. of Bigfork; grandchildren: Scott A. Cooke, San Francisco; Courtney H. Cooke, San Francisco; Melissa L. Hann and husband, Tim, Parker, Colo.; Christine D. Hood and husband, Nicholas of Kalispell; great-grandchildren: Rebecca Hann and Alyson Miller, children of Melissa and Tim Hann, Parker.
Memorials may be sent to a charity of your choice. Cremation will take place and there will be a Memorial service 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Johnson Mortuary. Pastor Gary Morton of the Swan Chapel will be officiating. Cremation and arrangements are by the Johnson Mortuary & Crematory.
John L. Radosevich
May 6, 1928-April 14, 1999
SPRING, Texas - John L. Radosevich, a retired geophysical data-buyer for Shell Oil Co., died suddenly on April 14, 1999, in Grand Junction, Colo. He was 70.
Born May 6, 1928, in Red Lodge, Mont., and educated in Carbon County schools and Carroll College, he began working for Shell in 1951 in Billings. He transferred to Shell's Denver operation in 1965 and lived in Arvada, Colo., until 1973, when he transferred to Shell's headquarters in Houston, where he retired in 1988.
Mr. Radosevich devoted himself to his family, tended his yard, pitched horseshoes and followed Notre Dame football. He never lost his love of the mountains and had traveled to Grand Junction, where two of his sons live, shortly before his death.
He met Marcellyn Roden of St. Paul, Minn., in Yellowstone National Park and they married
on Feb. 28, 1950. She survives and lives in Spring, Texas.
Mr. Radosevich is survived by a daughter and granddaughter, Jan Marie and Katy of Breckenridge, Colo., and four sons, Mike and his wife, Suzi of Grand Junction, John P. of Grand Junction, Mark and his wife, Geradette of Durango, Colo., and Matt and his wife, Pamela of Waikoloa, Hawaii.
Other survivors include his aunt and godmother, Katherine P. Egenes of Red Lodge, and her son, Tom, and his family; and cousins, Dick Psenda of Houston, George Psenda of Palisade, Colo., Toni R. Keele of Deer Lodge, Mont., and Kay Loueen Psenda of Las Vegas, Nev.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on April 23, 1999, at Sts. Simon & Jude Catholic Church in The Woodlands. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Grand Junction Chapter, 743 Horizon Court, Grand Junction, Colo. 81506, or to a charity of your choice.
Mae Lillian (Grande) Sanderson
Our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother, Mae Lillian Sanderson, joined her husband Ben on Saturday, April 17, 1999, after a sudden illness.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1921, to Anton and Anne Grande. She was raised and educated in Big Timber. Mae graduated from Billings Business College and worked as a bookkeeper and legal secretary before she dedicated her life to raising her five girls and three boys. Her parents came to America from Norway and settled in Big Timber. She was very proud of her Norwegian ancestry and passed down the tradition of making Fattigmond and Lefse to her children. Mother was a member of the Big Timber Lutheran Church.
Mae married
Ben Sanderson on Sept. 19, 1944, in Ogden, Utah. They were blessed with eight children. Ben passed away on Jan. 10, 1993, leaving Mae to be cared for by her children.
Survivors include her children: Gary Sanderson, Ben (Mi) Sanderson, Terry Sanderson, Sandi (Don) Morse, Carole Love, Gayle (Jim) Barbour, Karen (Mike) Monroe, and Deanne (Allan) Nielsen. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Grandchildren: Wayne, Teressa, Crystal, Davina and Ben Morse; Desirae (Frickel), J.R. and Jody Connard; Brian Sanderson; Tina (Cardwell), George Morse; Vanessa, Sean Monroe; Emily and Elliott Nielsen; Kristina and Krisropher Sanderson. Great-grandchildren: Stephanie and Hannah Morse, Brandon, Andrew and Garrett Frickel; Justin Sanderson; Ryan and Brooklyn Cardwell, Christian Deines, Rachel, Cole, Jessie, and Chantel Connard, Hunter Connard and Brady Morse.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Joe, Phil, Raymond and Dutch; her sisters, Thelma, Leona, Alice and Mabel; a grandson, Daniel Linwood Morse; and her husband, Ben Sanderson.
Mom enjoyed reading, camping, fishing and listening to her music. Her biggest joy was being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her family very much and we all loved her. "A mother's wealth is measured by the love of her children." In this sense, she was a very wealthy woman!
Visitations may be made from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, at the Smith Downtown Chapel. Cremation will follow. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the Atonement Lutheran Church, 407 Wicks Lane, with interment of cremains to follow at Mountview cemetery. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
