John Evans
HARDIN - John Edward Evans, 74, of Hardin, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, May 17, 1999, after a brief but heroic battle with cancer.
John was born July 11, 1924, in San Diego, Calif., to John Earle and Hilda Quint Evans. His early youth was spent in San Fernando Valley, Calif. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at an early age and after completing basic training was sent to the South Pacific to defend his country. He spent WWII on the island of Espiritu Santo in the Aviation Repair and Overhaul Unit, and later received his honorable discharge in 1945.
In 1944, before his military time ended, he married
Patricia Richter of Oakland, Calif. After returning from the South Pacific, the couple lived in Los Angeles where John worked for a trucking company. In 1948, John moved his family to Oakland where he began his career as an active duty firefighter with the Oakland Fire Department. Patricia died in 1979.
He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters in Oakland, No. 55. After 26 years of public service John retired as a lieutenant from the department. Once retired he moved his family to Grants Pass, Ore. Here he became a heavy equipment operator and joined Teamsters Union No. 962. John decided to retire and enjoy his "Golden Years" in 1986.
In 1981, he married
Gerry Ann Wallis Woodhead. The couple remained in Grants Pass until 1984 when they moved to Gold Beach, Ore. From there they shared many adventures traveling. After 11 years of life in Gold Beach they moved to Montana in 1995. John and Gerry knew they had found "their" place and planned for retirement in the "Big Sky Country."
John's love of life affected all of those around him. His keen sense of humor and his good nature made him a joy to know and love. John is best known in this area as a volunteer reader for the Reach Out and Read Program for the Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital. He reported weekly to read to the children in the waiting room and his entertainment for them would be to dress in different costumes suiting the themes of the stories. The children were always delighted by his presence and he could bring a story to life in a moment and hold the children captivated for hours. He took the time to listen to what each child had to say and made each one feel special with his genuine love and caring for children.
John was a gifted individual, a talented chef, gardener, fisherman and an avid motor home traveler, having been on a round trip of the Alaskan Highway and across the U.S. several times. He was a true fan of sports of all kinds. He coached baseball in Oakland and umpired in the semi-pro leagues games. Golf was a passion as was football, he was an Oakland Raider fan forever, but he enjoyed all the teams. His enthusiasm for sports is evidenced by the fact that all of his sons excelled in athletics as well as his grandchildren, both boys and girls.
He was a member of the VFW Post No. 4439 in Gold Beach, Elks Lodge No. 394 in Billings, and the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hardin.
John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank Evans. John is survived by his wife, Gerry of Hardin; four sons, John (Cathie) of Klamath Falls, Ore., Bill (Lynne) of Gresham, Ore., Steve (Sue) of Portland, Ore., and Barry (Sheila) of Corvallis, Ore.; one daughter, Janet Evans of Hillsboro, Ore.; one stepson, Jim (Lynn) Woodhead of Santee, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Heidi Woodhead of Coconut Grove, Fla.; one brother, Robert (Beverly) Evans of Gold Beach; two sisters, Patria (Dave) Nicholas of Pismo Beach, Calif., and Elaine (Chuck) Flynn of Canoga Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren; one step-grandson and one great-grandson. He is survived by a host of other relatives including a special cousin, Tom (Jan) Schankowitch of San Bruno, Calif. He leaves his special friends, Dr. Dick LaFrance of Hardin, Wayne Wesley of Gold Beach, and Don Kenney of Sacramento, Calif.
John had a genuine appreciation and love for nature. He always enjoyed looking for antelope while driving to Billings and was enthused by the landscape when returning to Hardin. In his final days, he marveled at the beauty of the Montana sky as he viewed the surroundings from his living room window. Never taking nature for granted, he believed that we all are part of nature and back to nature we will return when our mission on earth is complete. His strong faith in God has helped him through this difficult time and assured him of a place in Heaven. John has touched so many peoples' lives with love and joy in the short time he has lived in Hardin. "There is a bridge of memories from Earth to Heaven above. It keeps our dear ones near us - it is the bridge we call LOVE."
Cremation has taken place. Rosary Service will be held Friday, 7 p.m. at the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 22, 1999, at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hardin.
