Bill Mackay
HELENA -- Services are planned Saturday in Red Lodge for rancher and former state lawmaker Bill Mackay, who died this week in an Absarokee nursing home at age 88.
His death was announced by the Montana Historical Society, where he had served as a trustee, president and trustee emeritus for 46 years.
Mackay was a rancher near Roscoe, and served in the state Legislature for 22 years, concluding in 1980.
He was a director of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, in addition to his service with the historical society.
Mackay's parents were friends and patrons of cowboy artist Charlie Russell. The Mackay collection, now in a gallery bearing the Mackay name at the Montana Historical Society, is regarded as one of the best Russell collections in the world.
Services are planned at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Red Lodge Community Church. He is survived by three children.

Charles McGowan, 85
Charles Joseph McGowan died Thursday evening in a local nursing home.
He was born in Butte on July 2, 1914, to Charles and Delia (Boyle) McGowan and attended local schools. He served his country during World War II with the Navy where he was a signalman first class aboard the USS Ludlow from 1942 to 1945.
Mr. McGowan worked as a carpenter for Taylor McDonald Construction Company.
On March 28, 1943, he married the former Mauree Ericson in Champaign, Ill. Mrs. McGowan preceded her husband in death in 1989. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Hugh McGown and John McGowan.
He is survived by brother-in-law, Gary ``Swede" Ericson of Butte and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country.
In accordance with his requests, his remains have been cremated in Butte. His ashes will be interred with his family in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Metully, 85
TWIN BRIDGES -- Rose Metully of Twin Bridges died Friday in Parkview Acres Care Center, Dillon.
She was born April 27, 1914, in Dillon to Mike and Mary (Stefonick) Rebich. She was reared and attended school in Dillon. She married Joseph Metully Sept. 24, 1939, at Dillon; he died in 1992. They ranched in the Dillon area, later buying a ranch south of Twin Bridges in 1950, that they owned and operated until 1987. She then lived on the ranch until moving to Dillon in 1995.
She belonged to Notre Dame Catholic Church in Twin Bridges.
Survivors include her son, Joe Metully of Twin Bridges; daughter, Patricia and Floyd Brasher of Porterville, Calif.; grandchildren, Tracy Metully of Billings, Tara Metully of Twin Bridges, Jack and Josette Loof of Porterville, Calif.; brother, Edward and Dorothy Rebich of Dillon; sister, Katie Hren of Dillon.
Memorials: Twin Bridges Fire Department.
Mass of the Resurrection is 11 a.m. Monday in Notre Dame Catholic Church at Twin Bridges with the Rev. Frank Wiegenstein officiating. Interment will be in the Twin Bridges Cemetery.
The parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in K&L Mortuary Chapel at Twin Bridges.

Kenneth Paynter, 81
Kenneth A. ``Ken" Paynter of 2050 Carolina died Sunday evening in his home.
He was born June 28, 1918, in Butte to Sidney and Theresa Paynter and attended local schools.
He worked for the Montana Power Company as superintendent of the Butte Gas Division before his retirement.
He had been a member of Butte Lodge No.22 AF&AM, the Butte Scottish Rite Bodies, Bagdad Temple of the Shrine, and Butte Court No.23 of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a life member of Butte Elks Lodge No.240 BPOE. He enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling.
Ken married the former Lois Jean Hoon in 1943 in Butte; she died in 1979. In 1981 he married Dorothy Sternhagen Vetter and she died March 29 of this year. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Marcia Jean Paynter in 1949.
Survivors include his son, Rick Paynter of Houston, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mike Leary of Butte; stepsons and daugh ters-in-law, Randy and Judi Vetter of Butte and Bernard and Aleta Vetter of Kaysville, Utah; grandchildren, Abby Leary, McKenna Leary, Ken Paynter, Tom Paynter, Stewart Paynter, David and Amber Vetter, Juliana and Brandon Allen, Amanda and Corey Cortez, Benjamin Vetter, Samuel Vetter, Daniel Vetter, Lisa Vetter and Wendileah Vetter; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd Paynter of Butte; Donald Paynter of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Mr. Paynter's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where there will be no wake or visitation. Friends are asked to join with his family for funeral ser vices at 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Entombment will be in Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Mountain View Cemetery with a reception to follow in Wayrynen-Richards Community Center.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers all memorials be made to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children or Easter Seals Highlands Hospice.

Margaret Hagenbarth, 83
DILLON -- Lifetime Beaverhead County resident Margaret Hagenbarth died at home Sunday of natural causes.
Margaret was born June 25, 1916, in Dillon to William and Lillie Sweeney. She grew up on the family ranch on Nicholia Creek in Sheep Creek Basin west of Dell. She attended the one-room Nicholia School and graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1933. In 1935 she graduated from Montana State Normal College in Dillon and immediately took a teaching job in the Big Hole Basin. In 1939 she was elect ed superintendent of schools and served in that capacity until marrying Dave Hagenbarth in 1945. While raising their two sons, Margaret maintained house holds in Montana and Idaho in support of her husband's interstate livestock operation. After her husband's death in 1970, Margaret and her sons managed Hagenbarth Livestock.
Margaret's participation in community activities and business was often sought due to her ability to con tribute common sense, fair ness, honesty and loyalty. She did altar work for St. Rose Catholic Church and was in the Ladies Guild. She was a board member and office holder in many organizations, including the Dillon Community Concert Association, Beaverhead Foundation, Norwest Bank, Western Montana College Foundation, Beaverhead County High School Board, Southwest Montana Arts Council and PEO.
Preceding Margaret in death were her husband, David V. Habenbarth, and brothers, John and Roger Sweeney.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, David J. Hagenbarth and Patricia Carrick, James F. and Laurie Hagenbarth of Dillon; brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Chris Sweeney of Salem, Mo; sister, Mary Ford of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Marc Hagenbarth, John Hagenbarth, Jessica Carrick Hagenbarth, Kate Hagenbarth; several nieces and nephews.
Memorials: St. Rose Catholic Church, Barrett Memorial Hospital Home Health or Western Montana College.
A wake service is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Brundage Funeral Home in Dillon. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in Dillon's St. Rose Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15, and interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Stanley Younce, 52
Stanley R. Younce died Friday in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Portland, Ore., after a courageous battle with liver dis ease.
He was born Oct. 13, 1947, in Butte to Stanley L. Younce and Betty (Younce) Brown. He attended school in Butte and graduated from Butte High.
He enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. Following this he worked for the Anaconda Co. and then was an over-the-road truck driver for Union Carbide and Evergone Trucking. He retired for medical reasons in 1978.
Stan married the former Judy Sumpter on April 25, 1975, in Butte where they made their home.
He enjoyed hunting and bowling and was vice presi dent of the East Side Athletic Club.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jack; brother, Craig and mother-in-law, Ruth Sumpter.
Stan is survived by his loving wife, Judy Younce; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Todd Boucher; daughter, Kim Younce; granddaughters, Amber, April and Taylor Boucher and Kaitlyn McKinney; father, Stanley L. Younce of California; mother, Betty Brown of Butte; sisters and brother-in-law, Hazel Duddy, Robin and Terry Clark; brothers and sisters-in-law; Pat and Cherie Waddell and Lang and Dana Waddell; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Roberta and Lewis Perino and Debbie and Steve Merzlak; brother-in-law, Robert Sumpter; father-in-law, Fred Sumpter; numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Stan will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Younce's remains have been cremated in Portland. Memorial services will be con ducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Veron, 81
Mary Elizabeth Jeffers Veron died Monday afternoon in a local nursing home.
She was born in Garden City, Kan., on May 18, 1919, to Charles F. and Mary E. (Ammons) Jeffers. She attended school in Kansas.
Mary was a pur chasing agent for National Wire and Cable for many years, and retired at age 78.
She married Harry A. Veron in Denver. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Harry A. and Diane Veron, Glendora, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Paul Peek, Butte; grandchildren, Sean Peek, Robert Peek, Brian Veron and Richard Veron; sister, Helen Jones, Fallbrook, Calif.; brother, Charles Jeffers, Denver.
There will be no services in Butte. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Covina Hills, Calif. Memorials: Highlands Hospice.

Oswald Bergen, 80
ANACONDA -- Graveside services for Oswald Alexander `` Ozzie" Bergen are at 1 p.m. Thursday in New Hill Cemetery with Chaplain Gene Erickson officiating.
American Legion Post No. 21 color guard will present military honors. Wake/visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of KT Riddle Funeral Homes.
Oswald died Sunday after noon in St. James Community Hospital, Butte.
He was born May 30, 1920, on the family ranch in Meagher County. He attended school in Martinsdale. He worked construction through out the state. On July 18, 1941, in Billings, he married Norma Marinek of Forsyth. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and was discharged as a sergeant in 1945. He returned to Montana and he and Norma lived in Harlowton, where Ozzie worked for the Milwaukee Road.
They came in 1953 to Anaconda, where Ozzie worked for the Anaconda Co. as a bricklayer helper at the smelter. He retired in 1980, when the smelter closed.
He enjoyed gardening and woodwork.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Anaconda; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Geraldine, Stan and Mary Bergen all of Lewiston, Idaho, Alvie Bergen of Anaconda; several nieces and nephews.
His sister, Jean Dammell, died in April 1999.
Memorials: donor's choice.
