Mary Ann McCaffrey Nugent
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Mary Ann McCaffrey Nugent, 93, died in Royal Oak, Mich., on January 12, 1999. Born in County Leitrim, Ireland, Jan. 6, 1906, she emigrated to New York City in 1925, where she married James Nugent and raised six children. They moved to Montana in 1971 where James died in 1972 and Mary lived until March 1998.
Mary is survived by six children: James of Tom's River, N.J.; Mary (Robert) Weinbaum of Birmingham, Mich.; Anne Wettler of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Henry (Mickey) of Billings, Mont.; Edward (Marianne) of Lyndhurst, N.J.; and Hubert (Barbara) of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by a sister, Kathleen Turner of Tarrytown, N.Y., twenty grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
There will be a Mass celebrating Mary's life at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral in Billings at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19. Mary's friends from Western Manor Nursing Home, Pleasantview apartments, and Joliet are invited to join with her family in celebrating her life.

Dr. Lorimer Dale Potratz
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Dr. Lorimer Dale Potratz, 76, formerly of Billings, died June 12, 1999.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at First Baptist Church of Shawnee, with interment following at Johnson County Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas.

Walter G. "Smitty" Smith
LIVINGSTON - Walter G. "Smitty" Smith, 75, died Nov. 17, 1998, at his home in the Paradise Valley.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at the Pine Creek United Methodist Church in Paradise Valley. Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Grant L. Viertel
LEWISTOWN - Grant L. Viertel, 82, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17, in the United Methodist Church with interment following in the Lewistown City cemetery. The Cloyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruben "Josh" Stewart
CROW AGENCY - Ruben, "Josh" Stewart, 21, of Crow Agency went on to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on June 10, 1999, as a result of injuries sustained in a pedestrian-train accident.
He was born March 20, 1978, a son of Ruby Jefferson and Samuel Bull Shows. He was raised in Crow Agency by his grandparents, Ruben and Elizabeth Stewart.
Josh was a member of the Pentecostal Church and a 1999 graduate of Lodge Grass High School. He enjoyed swimming, hunting, riding horses, playing basketball and spending time with his family and friends. He always had a comment or a joke that would never fail to make everyone laugh or smile.
Survivors include his mother, Ruby (Benny) Jefferson and his father, Samuel (Carla) Bull Shows; his grandparents, Ruben and Elizabeth Stewart; his adopted parents: Frank and Agnes Falls Down, and Ralph and Julia Howe; five brothers: Isaiah Stewart of Hardin, John Hugs of Ft. Smith, Rocky Stewart, Harry Bull Shows and Ruben Jefferson of Crow Agency; two sisters: Candy Stewart and Corma Jefferson of Crow Agency; two step brothers: Robin Jefferson of Crow Agency and Wyle Jefferson of Ill.; two step sisters: Alfreda Jefferson of Ft. Smith and Angel Jefferson of Wash.: his adopted brothers: Clinton (Clarissa) Stewart of Lodge Grass, Dennis (Vianna) Stewart of Sandcreek, Gene (Theo) Bullinsight of Wyo., David Blaine Sr. of Hardin, Moses Yellowrobe Jr. of Kan., John Bullinsight III of Crow Agency, Donavon (June) Bullinsight of Ft. Belknap and Roman Fisher of Lame Deer; his adopted sisters: Rachel (Barry) Howe of Crow Agency, Roberta (Alex) Bear Crane of Ft. Smith, Donna (Grant) Dillon of Hardin, Rena Yellow Robe of N.M., Rowena (Larry) Big Back of Wash., Janice Gets Down of Lodge Grass and Juliet Fisher of Crow Agency; his uncles: John (Carol) Bullinsight, David (Adelia) Stewart Sr., Donald Stewart Sr., Isaac (Mary Agnes) Shane and Thomas (Beverely) Pretty on Top of Crow Agency, Lawrence (Wilma) Stands of Pryor, Francis (Cerise) Stewart of Wyola; one aunt, Pricilla Gardner; and a special niece, Tillie Stewart, whom he loved and cherished.
Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Family cemetery near Crow Agency. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Robert Taylor
Robert Taylor, 75, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Deaconess Medical Center in Billings.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the Sidney cemetery. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge of arrangements.

Charles D. Tharp
WORLAND, Wyo. - Charles D. Tharp, 51, died Saturday, June 12, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Worland with interment following at the Riverview Memorial Gardens cemetery. Veile Mortuary of Worland is in charge of arrangements.

Meta M. Stewart
WYOLA - Meta M. Stewart, 66, devoted mother, foster parent and rancher, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, in the St. Vincent Hospital.
Ishash'ke Bashash "Her horse come in first" was born Nov. 9, 1932, in St. Xavier, a daughter of Theodore and Martha Spotted Bear Cloud. She was a great-granddaughter of Pretty Eagle. She grew up in the St. Xavier area and attended area schools, graduating from Hardin High School in 1953. Following her graduation, she attended and graduated from Billings Business College. She was selected as the second Crow Indian Rodeo Queen during the Crow Fair Celebration. While a college student, she worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Billings.
Meta married Walter Stewart Sr. in 1954 in Crow Agency and the couple made their home in Wyola. Mr. Stewart died in 1990.
She was a member of the Catholic Church, Tobacco Society, Ties the Bundle Clan and a child of the Greasy Mouth Clan. Her strong belief in the Lord reinforced her children's lives. She was a devoted mother who served as a foster mother to many area children. She taught sewing as a Wyola 4-H leader for many years. Meta was a woman of many talents, which included sewing, quilting and beading with many of her items winning first place at the Crow Fair. Her "green thumb" was evident in the beauty of her flower garden and yard.
Meta was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Mitcheleen; and a grandson, Mitchell Stewart.
Survivors include six daughters, Magdalene (Harry) Rock Above of Pryor, Safara (James) Big Lake, Veronica (Byron) Bends and Mamie (Carson) Yellowtail of Lodge Grass, Theo (Gene) Bullinsight of Wyoming and Jacinta (Chris) Good Luck of Wyola; three sons, John (Drewann) Stewart of Wyola, Walter (Joyce) Stewart Jr. of Billings and Shawn (Chastity) Stewart of Lodge Grass; two children she raised as her own, Tronnes (Elizabeth) Birdinground and Frank (Joanna) Bastine; one adopted daughter, Denise Stops; three adopted brothers, Joseph (Lorraine) Bear Cloud of Crow Agency, Buster (Elsie) Leider of Lodge Grass and Kenneth (Barbara) Spotted of Wyola; two adopted sisters, Harriett (Ettings) Little Owl and Jessica Costa of Crow Agency; her foster children, George and Ginger Little Light, Aaron Fighter, Gale, Loretta and Colleen Well Known; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her Tobacco Society relatives, Byron Bad Bear, Samuel Not Afraid, Alma Real Bird, Luella Johnson, Linda Covers Up, Clarence Agnes, Agnes Hill Beaumont, Mary Hogan Wallace and May Lou Big Day; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Rosary will be recited 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday in the Lodge Grass Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Samuel Wickman
Samuel Wickman, 82, of Billings passed away Monday, June 14, 1999, at the Parkview Convalescent Care.
He was born Aug. 1, 1917, west of Billings, the son of Henry and Anna (Rohn) Wickman. He was raised west of Billings and worked on farms, on construction and at the Great Western Sugar Beet Factory.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Alice Wickman of Billings; three nephews: Wayne Wickman of Virginia Beach, Va., Galen Berst of Billings, and John Berst of Big Timber; and one niece, Loretta Diede of Missoula.
Sam was preceded in death by three brothers.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at the Sunset Memorial Gardens.. Visitation will be at Smith West Chapel 304 34th St. West starting Tuesday, 1 p.m.

Samuel Wickman
Samuel Wickman, 82, of Billings passed away Monday, June 14, 1999, at the Parkview Convalescent Care.
He was born Aug. 1, 1917, west of Billings, the son of Henry and Anna (Rohn) Wickman. He was raised west of Billings and worked on farms, on construction and at the Great Western Sugar Beet Factory. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Alice Wickman of Billings; three nephews, Wayne Wickman of Virginia Beach, Va., Galen Berst of Billings and John Berst of Big Timber; and one niece, Loretta Diede of Missoula.
Sam was preceded in death by three brothers.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West, starting Tuesday, 1 p.m.

Waldya 'Edna' Wirth
HARLOWTON - Waldya "Edna" Wirth, 91, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Wheatland Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church with interment in the Harlowton cemetery. Perkins Funeral Home is in charge.

Ethel Wilma Stienbarger
POWELL, Wyo. - Ethel Wilma Stienbarger, 93, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at her home.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Powell. Interment will be at Crown Hill cemetery.

Fran Stringer
MEDICINE LAKE - A funeral for Fran Stringer will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 1999 at Medicine Lake Fireball in Medicine Lake. Pastor Grant Patterson will officiate and burial will be in Medicine Lake cemetery.
Fran was born May 27, 1919, on the family farm, six miles Northeast of Medicine Lake, the daughter of Frank and Caroline (Danielson) Snellman. She lived her entire life in the Medicine Lake area. She married Orland Stringer Aug. 16, 1937, in Sidney, and they farmed twelve miles Northeast of Medicine Lake. Fran worked on the farm all her life. In 1942, they moved to town and she worked at the Co-op Store for many years. She also drove a school bus and cooked at Medicine Lake School.
Fran was a trap shooter, hunter and avid bowler. She was a director and committee person for the Montana Women's Bowling Association, as well as her local association. At the time of her death, she held the high women's game (288) at the Lake Bowl. She enjoyed oil painting, sewing, woodworking, carving, cross stitch and anything else she put her mind to. She was a good cook and canned a lot of garden produce and wild game.
She was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be missed by everyone. She was a member of the Medicine Lake VFW Auxiliary 8869, Medicine Lake Lutheran Church and for many years was a member of Women of the Moose.
Survivors include three sons: Lloyd and wife Dolores of Butte and their children, Dean, Janet and Kyle; Ron and wife Dee of Belgrade and Ron's children, Frank and Margo; and Wayne and wife Kathy of Medicine Lake and their children, Missy, Travis and Tanya; one daughter Doreen Nyby and husband Ed of Belgrade. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Opal Lillian Stringer of Great Falls and Gladys Herzog of Medicine Lake; three sisters-in-law: Addie Grandlund of Medicine Lake, Naomi Snellman of Butte and Hazel Snellman of Townsend. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Orland, one son, Orvis, three brothers: Ernie, Herb, Gordon and Kenny and one sister, Grace Snellman.
Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.

Alice A. Wells
Alice A, Wells, 93, of Billings, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at Valley Health Care Center. Alice was born Jan. 10, 1906, to Calla Parker Martin and Sam Martin at a ranch near Great Falls, Mont. At the age of three she went to live with her Grandmother and husband on the Edd Fox ranch at the mouth of the Musselshell river. She married Bert Wells Jan. 22, 1924, and they lived at the Cat Creek oilfield until Bert was transferred to Wyoming in 1942. They moved from Lance Creek, Wyo., to Casper when Bert retired from the Continental Oil Company in 1959 and lived there for seven years before making their home in Billings. Bert died in 1974 and Alice remained at the family home with her daughter until she entered the Valley Health Care Center in July 1996 after suffering a second stroke.
Alice made many friends in her life and her greatest joy was exchanging letters and keeping in touch with them. She enjoyed playing cards and was involved in various clubs with her friends. She was very skilled at all kinds of needlework and has left many beautiful handmade things for her family to cherish. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Pioneers of Eastern Montana.
She is survived by her daughter, Fern Tolbert at the family home and two grandchildren, Rita Manko of Idaho and Flynn Tolbert of Los Angeles.
Visitation will begin 10 a.m. Monday. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Walter Oliver Benson
SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Walter Oliver Benson, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at his home.
A celebration of his life will be noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Last Chance Bar in Big Horn. Kane Funeral Home is in charge.
