LOVELL, Wyo. - LeVerna Frances James, 54, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 7, at the Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, in the Byron L.D.S. Chapel with interment following in the Lovell cemetery.
William "Willie" Krueger
CULBERTSON - William "Willie" Krueger, 79, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at Roosevelt Memorial Hospital in Culbertson.

George Lackman
George Lackman passed away quietly at the age of 85 at Missoula's St. Patrick Hospital on Friday, June 4, 1999.
He was born March 18, 1914, in Laurel, Montana, the son of Elizabeth and Henry Lackman. He attended schools in the Billings area and completed the Dale Carnegie Course.
George and his wife Kathryn, natives of Laurel, met at a dance and were married
Nov. 24, 1934, in Billings. George farmed with his parents in Billings and in 1941, he and Kathryn acquired the farm that has remained in the family for the past 77 years. It was on this farm that George developed a love of the land and desire to see to its proper stewardship.
In a career distinguished with service to the agricultural industry, George was appointed by President Jack Kennedy in 1961 as the State Director of the Farmers Home Administration. He was re-appointed for a second term by President Lyndon Johnson. In this capacity, he chaired the Montana State Technical Action Panel, with membership consisting of all USDA Agency heads. He served farmers and other rural residents with credit and provided technical help with farm and money management tasks. George was appointed Commissioner of The Montana Dept. of Agriculture in 1969 by Gov. Forrest Anderson and re-appointed to a second term by Gov. Tom Judge in 1971.
George served in many community and agricultural positions, including: Board member of the Yellowstone Valley Rural Electric, The Montana Rural Electric, The National Rural Electric, The Billings Bench Water Assn., The Midland Empire Fair Board, The Agriculture Advisory Committee at Montana State University, The Midland Production Credit Assn., the Pioneer School Board, the Yellowstone Soil Conservation District, and the Missoula County Tavern Owner's Assn. He was further involved in the Governors Ad Hoc Committee of Farm Organizations and Commodity Groups, the Wheat Research and Marketing Commission, the Board of Hail Insurance, the Board of the Pacific International Trade Commission, the Predator and Rodent Control Advisory Council, and the Agriculture Development Council of the Federation of Rocky Mountain States.
George and Kathryn moved to Missoula in 1977 to retire closer to their family. They enjoyed traveling and spending time at their cabin on Flathead Lake where they could often be found cruising in their house boat or playing horseshoes with neighbors. George treasured the time spent there with his grandchildren, especially swimming in the lake and pulling them behind the ski boat.
He is preceded in death by an infant son Raymond, a son James, a granddaughter Cinde Lakey and a brother Alex. His family includes his wife of the family home; a daughter, Barbara Lambrecht of Missoula; a son, Jack and his wife Dorothy, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry and his wife, Annie, of Spokane; and a sister, Lee Thompson of Kalispell.
Viewing hours will be at The Malletta Family of Funeral Homes, Squire Chapel, 3035 S. Russell, on Tuesday, from noon until 8 p.m. and will continue Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. David Ophus officiating. A reception will follow services. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Parkinson's Support Group, APDA of Missoula, 2415 57th, Missoula, MT 59803, or to the Missoula Senior Center, 705 S. Higgins Ave., Missoula, MT 59801, or to the Missoula County Cancer Assn., 3005 Queen St., Missoula, MT 59801.
Ronald J. Maas
GLASGOW - Ronald J. Maas, 50, died Monday, May 31, 1999, of natural causes in Billings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, in the Bell Chapel in Glasgow with interment in the Highland cemetery in Glasgow. Bell Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Edward P. Rennie
Edward Parsons Rennie passed away Friday, June 4, 1999, at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Billings, of natural causes at the age of 95. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Nov. 21, 1903, to John and Daisy (Parsons) Rennie, both since deceased, his childhood was spent in Little Falls, Minn., and Columbus and Hobson, Montana. Two brothers, Walter and Andrew, and a sister, Hazel, preceded him in death.
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, he worked as a surveyor for the Southern Pacific railroad and as a civil engineer in South America and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He married
the former Harriet Hall of Alden, Minn., his surviving wife of 53 years, on Nov. 29, 1945, in Arlington, Va. They had a son, David, who lives in Billings. Edward worked as an electrician in Hardin from 1947 until 1950, when he and Harriet returned to Arlington, where Edward worked as a civil engineer for the U.S. Park Service until his retirement in 1968. Edward and Harriet spent their retirement years in Waseca, Minn., and Hot Springs Village, Ark., before moving to Billings in January, 1999.
Edward is survived by his wife, Harriet; son, David; daughter-in-law, Debra; granddaughter, Rebecca; and great-granddaughter, Ashley.
A graveside service with interment will be held at Oakland cemetery in Little Falls, Minn., on Friday, June 11. Memorials may be made to the "Shriners Hospitals for Children, " c/o the Office of Development, International Shrine Headquarters, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607-1460. Albert Antone Rising
BEACH, N.D. - Albert Antone Rising, 75, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson.
Vigil/Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 7, at the Chapel of Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva with interment following at St. Mary's cemetery.
Oramel Ainsworth "Cottie" Seager
Oramel Ainsworth "Cottie" Seager, noted international Petroleum Geologist, passed away at his home in Billings on Saturday, June 5, 1999, at the age of 94. He was born in St. James, Minn., on March 21, 1905, the son of George Wesley and Villa (Ainsworth) Seager.
O.A. was the oldest of three children. His brother John (Jack) born in 1908, died in 1989 and his sister Elizabeth, born in 1910, died soon after birth. O.A. graduated from the St. James Public High School in June of 1922 and received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1927 from Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill. During the summer of 1927, "Cottie" Seager was a member of the Eddy Expedition down the cliff bound Colorado River from Green River, Utah, to Needles, Calif. This is believed to have been the first expedition to have successfully accomplished this feat. A book entitled "Down The World's Most Dangerous River" by Clyde Eddy was released in 1929. The expedition down the Colorado River earned Cottie Seager a membership in the Explorer's Club. Since the expedition, Cottie received a Master of Science in Geology in 1929 from Northwestern University.
Following his college days at Northwestern University, Cottie met and married
the lovely Esther Louise Totten on Aug. 23, 1930 in Chicago. Esther preceded him in death in 1987. She was also a graduated geologist in her own right and taught geology at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. During their Egyptian stay O.A. Seager's professional experience included: Carter Oil Co., 1930-1944, Division Geologist and Manager, Rocky Mountain Area (Oklahoma, Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming), Standard Oil Co. of Egypt, 1944-1947, Assistant managing Director (Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia), Arabian American Oil Co. (ARAMCO), 1948-1964, and Exploration Manager and Assistant General Manager (Saudi Arabia).
Since retirement from ARAMCO in January of 1964, O.A. Seager continued to keep his hands in exploration and development of oil reserves in the Middle East and North Africa until 1974. Toward the end of his foreign assignment in Saudi Arabia, O.A. was the anchor man in a unique project - the geological mapping of the entire Arabian Peninsula. Such a map had never been made before and the undertaking made scientific history as the first time governments, individuals, and companies, worked together on such a project. His technical and professional societies include: the American Ass'n of Petroleum Geologists (Emeritus); the Montana Geological Society (Honorary); the Certified Professional Geologists #1885; the Certified Petroleum Geologist #86; the Society of Exploration Geophysicists; and Society of Petroleum Engineers of the American Institute of Mining; Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers; and Gamma Beta Chapter Sigma Nu Fraternity, Northwestern University.
The Seagers, (Esther and Cottie) will be remembered for the scholarships funded and for the financial help given over the past and future years to Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., Rocky Mountain College in Billings, and for the financial help given to the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, also in Billings.
Survivors include: Marcia S. Bundi of Great Falls, Barbara Sales of Libertyville, Ill., Joyce Apitz of Rockford, Ill., Inge M. Hofmeister of Severna Park, M.D., Dr. Raymond Sanford of Mankato, Minn., and Fred Devens of Mercer Island, Wash..
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 8th, at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist. Memorials may be directed to the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation, Box 80807, Billings, MT 59108.
Grace H. Simpson
SACO - Grace H. Simpson, 90, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at the Valley View Home in Glasgow of natural causes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Saco United Methodist Church in Saco, with interment to follow in the Grandview cemetery at Saco. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Molly A. Sparhawk
Molly Ann Sparhawk passed away at her home in Billings on June 4, 1999 at the age of 55 of cancer.
She was born April 12, 1944 in Hardin the daughter of Ernest and Lupe Lucero. She attended school in Saint Xavier, Hardin, and graduated from high school at Billings Senior in 1962. She attended college at University of Montana graduating in 1973 with honors, earning her degree in Social Work.
She married
Steve Sparhawk on June 5, 1975 in Great Falls. They made their home in Missoula before moving to Billings in 1977.
Molly enjoyed her family and was a homemaker for many years. She worked with Billings School District 2. She was employed with Yellowstone City-County Health Dept. Private Duty Program. Molly enjoyed working with plants and collecting many treasures. She operated several businesses in Billings selling her plants and collectibles.
Molly was predeceased by her parents.
Her husband, Steve; four children; and five grandchildren survive her: Wayne Siebert and his wife, Song of Billings; Jodi Cooley and her husband, Marty of Affton, Mo.; Ryan Sparhawk and Seth Sparhawk of the family home in Billings; her stepmother and caregiver, Elia Lucero of West Minster, Colo.; sisters and one brother, Diane and Darrell Imhoff of Billings, Pricilla Tremmel of Norwalk, Ohio, Paul and Isadora Lucero of North Glen, Colo. Betty and Floyd Robertson of Arvada, Colo., Judy and Ed Wise of Arvada, Colo., Lillian and Dan Isley of Denver, Colo., Donna and Mark Kulbeck of Snohomish, Wash., and Bonita and Fred Becker of Evergreen, Colo.
Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be Wednesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Cremation or Funeral Gallery, 8th St. W and St. Johns. Inurnment will be at a later date at the family lot in the cemetery at Clark, Wyo. Arrangements were made by Cremation or Funeral Gallery, Billings, MT.
Arbutis Maggie Stepper
Arbutis Maggie Stepper, age 94, of Billings died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at her daughter's home in Billings.
She was born July 31, 1904 at Chauncy, Athens County, Ohio the daughter of William and Nona (Pauley) Clifton. At the age of ten she came to Montana with her family and settled at Ingomar. She taught school for a brief time after her schooling.
She married
Carl E. Stepper Nov. 14, 1923, in Harlowton. She was postmaster at Ingomar from 1947 to 1955. They moved to Stevensville where they operated the Three Mile Store for over eight years later moving to Spokane, Wash. They moved to Billings in 1967.
Mrs. Stepper enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Marjorie and Krist Mellgren of Billings; son and his wife, Max and Mary Gayle Stepper of Spokane; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1985, a daughter Maxine, four brothers, and three sisters.
A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. Visitation will be at Smith's Downtown Funeral Chapel 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 p.m. to 12 noon Tuesday.
Joan Lenore McAllister
LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Joan Lenore McAllister, 65 of Lakewood, died June 1 in Denver. Services were held on Saturday, June 5, in Lakewood.
Mrs. McAllister was born in Ivanhoe, Calif., on Feb. 5, 1934. She was a real estate broker in the Denver area. Previously, Mrs. McAllister lived in Billings where she raised her five children.
Survivors include daughters, Jeanmarie (Robert) Dantic of Laurel, Peggy Thill of Lakewood; sons, Michael (Charlotte) of Laurel, Keith (Gayle) of Billings and Richard (Patti) Thill of Lakewood; twin sister, Jean England (Richard) of Lakewood.
Lilla Jane Bell Marinos Friend Miller
REED POINT - Lilla passed away June 8, 1999, after a long fight with emphysema.
Lilla lived her last years in Reed Point. She was born April 2, 1926, on the family ranch near Ridge.
She loved to play cards, play the piano, rock hunt, hunt, fish, float the river and socialize with all of her many friends.
She was a telegraph operator on the Milwaukee Railroad, she had worked in a dental supply house, operated her own bar in Greycliff, and was a dinner cook at a local restaurant.
Above all else, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. No matter what the occasion, you could count on Lilla being there if one of her own was involved in the event. From hauling the Boy Scout troop to campouts to going to high school or college graduations, Lilla was always there.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Earl (Nick) Friend; her father, William Bell and her mother, Mary, and stepmother, June; three sisters, Bunnie, Jo and Margie; two brothers, Frank (Sonny) and Earl; one son, Robert Gene Friend; and one grandson, Jimmy Haverlandt.
Survivors include two sons, William C. (Chuck) Marinos and his wife, Karen of Butte and Jerry L. Friend of Reed Point; one daughter, Kerry Haverlandt and her husband, Gary of Polebridge; two grandchildren, Mark Haverlandt of Polebridge and Angela Marinos of Butte; and several nieces and nephews.
Though Mom is gone now, she will long be remembered and missed by her family and all of her friends.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be 9 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Evangelical Church in Reed Point.
Memorials are suggested to the Reed Point Volunteer Fire Department or the charity of choice.
Smith Funeral Chapel-Columbus was in charge of cremation and services.
Frieda Ullrich
FORSYTH - Frieda Ullrich, age 76, of Forsyth, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City after a brief illness.
Frieda was born on Jan. 17, 1923, in Watson Flats, the daughter of Herman K. and Frieda A. (Krueger) Ullrich. Frieda was the sixth of seven children. The family moved to Broadus in 1927 where Frieda spent her childhood. Frieda became a beautician, receiving her license from Billings. She moved to Forsyth and owned and operated "The Beauty Nook" until she retired.
Frieda loved spending time with her friends, playing cards, going for long walks, gardening, and was an accomplished crocheter. She was a member of the Golden Girls. Frieda loved her church and bible studies.
Frieda is survived by her brothers: Richard of Puyallup, Wash., Karl of Broadus, Albert and his wife, Ilene of Chinook; her sisters: Esther Gali and her husband, Tony of Broadus, Ruth Walters of Helena, Gertrude Schillreff of Lompoc, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vigil services will be held on Thursday, June 10, 1999, at 7 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth with Father Jerry Connolly celebrant. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 11, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the St. David's Church in Broadus with Father Gil Hemauer-Capuchin celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in the Valley View cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth is in charge of arrangements.
