Alice Theresa Fox was born on July 16, 1917, in Miles City, Mont., to Ernest F. and Alice C. Fox. The first nine years of her life were spent in Wibaux, Mont. As a young girl she developed a love for riding horseback in the hills of Eastern Montana, and at a very early age developed her unique gift of making friends and brightening the lives of the people she touched. In 1928, the Fox family moved to Bismarck, where Mr. Fox was employed by the Bank of North Dakota.
She moved to Grand Forks on July 4, 1933, and has been a resident of Grand Forks since that date. Alice attended Central High School, and the University of North Dakota, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1940. She had the distinction of being one of two women who graduated from UND law school that year.
Alice married
Lawrence A. Rudh on April 28, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church in East Grand Forks, Minn. Alice and Lawrence lived in Grand Forks for all of their 58 years of marriage, but spent each summer on Lake Melissa since 1963.
In 1980, they purchased a condominium at Wailea, Maui, where they wintered each year until 1996. The years spent at "The Eagle's Nest" condominium on Maui were clearly the happiest years of Alice's life. Each morning she awoke to the sounds of the birds she loved and she would look down at a large expanse of gardens that spread down to the majestic beach of Wailea. Alice and Lawrence were truly the essence of "Aloha" with their unique and special blend of hospitality and laughter. Alice was known for her wonderful cooking, and no one ever left any of her homes without being well-fed and cared for. She had a unique sense of humor and made friends everywhere she traveled throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence A. Rudh; her son, Lawrence W. (Becky) Rudh, Grand Forks; her daughter, Sue (Dan) Riley, Detroit Lakes; her brother, Fran (Lou) Fox of Billings, Mont.; her incorrigible dog, "Mr. Woods"; and an army of friends who she loved as family. She had three grandchildren.
Alice was a very bright, compassionate woman, who was known for her kindness as well as her intelligence, wit and insight.
She was a marvelous combination of her father's determination and wit, and her mother's abundant compassion. She died surrounded by an "honor guard" of family that had been with her in her last week of life, while listening to the Hawaiian music she so loved. She will be greatly missed, but her magnificent spirit will live on in our memories and her many acts of kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley, or the Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes, Minn.
