Captain Paul W, Smith, USNR (Ret.), 75, passed away on 30 Nov. 2005 in Alexandria, Va. A graduate of Albany Academy, Albany, N.Y. and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, L.I., NY, he had made his home in Ocean Springs, Miss. from 1986 until Hurricane Katrina devastated that area. Following his 1953 graduation from Kings Point, he served a two year tour aboard a minesweeper followed by two years as a mate aboard commercial vessels. He then came ashore and began a career in stevedoring and marine terminal/port operations. Starting in Honolulu, he subsequently served as Marine Operations Manager in San Diego; General Manager, Port of Hueneme; Calif.; Director of Transportation Services; Port of Tacoma, Wash. and eight years as Port Director of the Jackson County Port Authority/Port of Pascagoula, Miss.

Charles Marvin Burton, age 79, of Pascagoula, Miss., died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, in Pascagoula. He was born
Aug. 8, 1926, in Tucson, Ariz., and has been a resident of Pascagoula for 47 years. Mr. Burton was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Burton retired from Fletcher Construction and received an Associates Degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at the age of 78.

Mr. Paul Bruce Dempsey, 70, of Hurley, Miss., died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in Mobile, Ala. He was born
Sept. 18, 1935, in Winston County, Miss. Mr. Dempsey retired after 33 years as manager of Hurley Hardware in Hurley and later retired as a truck driver. He loved gardening, spending time watching his garden grow and helping his neighbors.

William Larry Johnson, 56, of Chicago, Ill., was born
May 7, 1949, in Peoria, Ill. to Marvis Johnson and the late Sarah Johnson. Mr. Johnson passed on to eternal life on Jan. 18, 2006, in Chicago, Ill. He received his education at Pascagoula High School. He continued his educational endeavors at Tougaloo College, where he obtained his Bachelors Degree. Mr. Johnson was employed at the V.A. Hospital in Chicago, Ill.

on April 27, 1975, in Pascagoula, Miss. Omeco passed on to her eternal life on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, in Live Oak, Fla. She was a loving person with a warm smile, a gentle spirit, and a great sense of humor. She was employed with Lee Bail Bonding Company for six years.
