Ms. Mattie Pearl Foster, 59, of Gautier, Miss., was born icon June 22, 1944, in Meridian, Miss., to the late Willie Batts Jr. and Mother Sarah D. Cuffee. She departed Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Miss.
Ms. Foster was preceded in death by her father, Willie Batts Jr.
To cherish her memories and kind ways, she leaves her loving mother, Sarah Cuffee of Moss Point, Miss.; one devoted daughter, Jacqueline Thomas, Gautier; four sons, Samuel (Barbara) Jackson, Carthage, Miss., Mark (Easper) Jackson, Gautier, Timothy (Yolanda) Foster, Pascagoula, Davis (Venus) Foster, Pascagoula; one sister, Bonnie (Peter) Glaude, Moss Point; two stepdaughters, Amanda Nash and Mary Nash, Carthage, Miss.; four aunts, Dorothy Young, Moss Point, Francis Stennis, Philadelphia, Miss., Ruth Long, San Diego, Calif., Pear Robinson, Memphis, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; one great- grandchild; two nieces, Daphne Glaude, San Diego, Calif., and Linda (Chris) Little, Pascagoula; one nephew, Peter (Denise) Glaude Jr., Gautier; a devoted friend of the family, Carlos Stallworth, Gautier; two loving, devoted friends, Regina Hubbard and Marcella Williams, Pascagoula; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Viewing will be from noon to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. Johns Baptist Church, 4100 Monarch St., Moss Point.
The funeral will begin promptly at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Alphonso Petway officiating.
Interment will be in Gabriel cemetery in Pascagoula, Miss.
All arrangements entrusted to Millender's Funeral Home in Moss Point, Miss.

YOW
Mr. James "Jake" C. Yow, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile born icon Jan. 29, 1933, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003.
Mr. Yow served with the U.S. Navy on the USS W.R. Rush and USS Sarsfield during the Korean War and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, China Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of VFW Post 49 and was retired from Civil Service, State of Alabama, Mobile County and Mobile Greyhound Park.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter, Robin Yow (Brian) Knight; and two grandchildren, Jacob Thomas Knight and Katelyn Taylor Knight of Gautier, Miss.; wife, Kathleen "Kitty" Yow of Mobile; stepdaughter, Kathy (Bo) Adams; three stepsons, Harold (Janet) Parker, Roger (Joy) Parker and Michael (Marie) Parker, all of Mobile; two sisters, Ester L. Johnson of Pensacola, Fla. and Ruby (Royce) Lynch of Evergreen, Ala.; four step-grandsons; three step-granddaughters; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He was loved by family and many friends and will be missed by all. Funeral services were held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home at noon Monday, Aug. 11, 2003. The Rev. Randy Johnson and the Rev. Richard Harvey officiated. Soloists were Royce Lynch and Donna Kline.
Pallbearers were Jacob Knight, Steve Johnson, Harold Knight, Jimmy Murray, Chris Johnson and Ben Few. Military honors were rendered at the graveside by the Honor Guard VFW Post #49. Interment was in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements were made by Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 6040 Three Notch Road, Mobile, Ala.

BUSBY
John Lovick Busby, 65, of Moss Point, Miss., died Aug. 9, 2003, in Singing River Hospital. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his wife, Retha Mae Cross Busby; one brother, Ottis Busby; and two sisters, Cloteel Payne and Mary Busby.
Survivors include his daughters, Wanda Carmack and husband, Tom of Vancleave, Miss., Gloria Johnson and husband, Ronnie of Helena, Miss.; brother, Rod Busby of Nashville, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Ellisville, Miss.
Interment will be in Jordan cemetery.

COOPER
Julian David Cooper, 83, of Pascagoula, Miss., born icon July 7, 1920, in Georgia, died Aug. 10, 2003, in Pascagoula.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Hasseltine Cooper; two daughters, Judy (Jimmy) McSween of Florida and Vicki (Gene) Winstead Jr. of Pascagoula; four grandsons, David (Kim) Winstead of Texas, Steven Winstead of Tennessee, Rhett (Cheryl) McSween of Florida and Brandon McSween of Florida; one granddaughter, Gina (Gere) Ward of Moss Point; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Eastlawn Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Hospice of Light in Pascagoula.

PROUSE
Lewis Owen Prouse, age 84, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, in Vancleave, Miss. Mr. Prouse was born icon Aug. 3, 1919, in Vancleave. He had remained a lifelong resident of Vancleave and was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Mr. Prouse was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Coast Guard for six years as a Gunners Mate on the Cutter Tampa. After his military service he joined the Merchant Marines and served with them for the next 36 years and retired as a chief engineer on deep sea tankers. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Charles and Eliza Jane Prouse; his wife, Wesley Marie Prouse; brother, Fred Prouse; and a sister, Ethel Kitchens.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and George Bishop Vancas of El Paso, Texas, Lois and Will Lanier of Denver, Colo. and Kathy and Tim Gemmill of Alvin, Texas; one sister, Faye Dudeck of Vancleave; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 12, at Holder Wells Funeral Home in Moss Point. Gravesite services will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Machpelah cemetery in Pascagoula with Elder John E. Rogers officiating.

BORDEN
Marlene Borden passed away on Monday, August 4, 2003. She was born icon February 14, 1945, in Newport, Tenn., to the late Lamus and Octavia Elliott. She is the third oldest of seven children.
She married icon Leviticus Thomas, Sr. and to this union three children were born, Michell, Angela, and Leviticus, Jr. He preceded her in death. She later married icon Mitchell Borden, who also preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her memory three children, Michell Thomas of Moss Point, Miss., Angela Thomas and Leviticus Thomas, Jr. of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters, Leola White of Detroit, Mich., Josephine (Edward) White of St. Charles, Ill., Rev. Helen E. Criglar of Ypsilanti, Mich., Marvis (Ronnie) Price of Lucedale, Miss.; five step-children; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; two aunts, Betsy Green of Chicago, Ill., and Lillie Mae Ramsey of Newport, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Two brothers, Lamus, Jr. and Jerry preceded her in death.
Viewing will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at Miracle Temple Church in Three Rivers Community.
The funeral will begin promptly at 3 p.m. from the church.
Interment will be in Davis Chapel cemetery, Three Rivers Community.

COOK
Fannie Ruth Watkins Cook, 82, of Philadelphia, Miss., died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at Neshoba County General Hospital in Philadelphia. Mrs. Cook was a native of Neshoba County and was a longtime resident of the Bloomo and Forestdale Communities. She was a member of Mt. Nelson Baptist Church in Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by a son, Billy Charles Cook in 2001.
Survivors include her husband, James Cook of Philadelphia; sons, Glyn Cook of Philadelphia and Pete Cook of Gautier, Miss.; one brother, Arlie Watkins of Camden, Ala.; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at McClain-Hays Chapel in Philadelphia, with burial in Cooks Chapel cemetery in Philadelphia. The Rev. Jackie Barker will officiate.

FLURRY
Clifton Cooper "Cliff" Flurry Sr., 83, of Vancleave, Miss., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003. He was born icon on May 16, 1920, in Wiggins, Miss. Mr. Flurry as a retiree of Mavar Seafood in Biloxi and worked most of his adult years on the Gulf Coast as a trucking supervisor. He was a Mason of the Masonic Ezell Lodge #426 for more than 60 years, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and a Shriner. Mr. Flurry was a pioneer of producing rodeos in Jackson County where he was a Tri-State Calf Roping Champion for many years. He was of the Methodist faith and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. John Stewart Flurry and mother, Mrs. Ethel Alexander Flurry; along with two sisters, Mrs. Clara Etta Cunningham and Mrs. Bernice Joseph.
Mr. Flurry is survived by his daughter, Ms. Trudi Dixon of Pascagoula, Miss.; sons, Mr. Clifton C. "Tippy" Flurry Jr., of Vancleave, Miss., and Mr. Clark Christensen of Houlka, Miss. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Chandra Nicholson and her husband, Casey, of Ocean Springs, Miss.; and five grandsons, Clifton "CC" Flurry III and his wife, Mandy, of Brandon, Miss., Ladd Flurry of Vancleave, Miss., Cooper Christensen of Houlka, Miss., Shannon Moncrief and Brannon Janca of Destin, Fla.; his sister, Eva Dalryample of Wiggins, Miss.; a special friend, Lise Hotard; devoted neighbors, James and Sherry Fleming; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug., 3, 2003, at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs, Miss., where friends visited from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial was in Ramsay cemetery #2, in Vancleave, Miss.

JOHNSON
Harlan Dale Johnson, 69, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, in Ocean Springs, Miss. Mr. Johnson was born icon in McVille, North Dakota, and growing up in the state of Washington, he enlisted in the Navy and then went on to work in the ship building industry in Washington and California until moving to Pascagoula in 1968. He retired in March 1994 from Ingalls Shipbuilding where he was Section Manager Marine Engineering. Mr. Johnson was responsible for the Design of various Navy Surface Combatants, including DD963 Spruance Class Destroyers, CG47 Ticonderoga Class Cruisers, LHA & LHD Amphibious Assault Ships and various Commercial contracts. Mr. Johnson was a leader in his field and was well known throughout the industry. He championed many firsts at Ingalls in the Engineering Department, including 2-D and 3-D Computer-Aided Design and Drafting, which plays a primary role in each of the new and ongoing contracts today at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (formerly Ingalls Shipbuilding).
Mr. Johnson was an avid fisherman as evidenced by his love of his home on the lake and many trips to Bull Shoals, Ark. He belonged to the Gulf Pines Good Sam Club and was an active member of BPOE#1120 in Pascagoula. Mr. Johnson was a devoted and loving son, father, and husband.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Harlan; and his brother, Wendell Johnson.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Vivian Johnson of Vancleave; four daughters, Vera Berry of Montgomery, Ala., Anita Decker of Portland, Ore., Shelli Johnson of Hurley, Yvonne Campbell of San Diego; three sons, Donald Wallis of Vancleave, Wayne Johnson of San Diego, James Johnson of Gautier; mother, Eveline Johnson of Snohomish, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be a 10:30 a.m. graveside service at Biloxi National cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Elks Foundation, BPOE#1120, Box 662, Pascagoula, Miss. 39567.

SMITH
Stella Scott Smith, 82, died Aug. 4, 2003, in Singing River Hospital, Pascagoula, Miss. She was a resident of Grand Bay, Ala. for the past 30 years, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Grand Bay. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther W. Smith.
Survivors include four sons, Phillip Smith (Faye), of Moss Point, Paul Smith (Jill) of Pascagoula, Gregory Smith (Peggy), Grand Bay, Gary Smith (Ginger), Grand Bay; two daughters, Ellen Roberts (John), Pensacola, Fla., Janet Murray (Paul), Pensacola, Fla.; one brother, E. L. Scott, Tenn.; three sisters, Dora Mae Ros, Pascagoula, Sally Ferrer, Pascagoula and Amelda Freeman, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Edith Krebs, Pascagoula and Betty Hamilton (Andy), Grand Bay, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the First Baptist Church of Grand Bay, Ala., with the Rev. Benny Still officiating.
The family requests that memorials be made to a charity of choice.
