Willard Ray
NATCHEZ -- Funeral services for Willard Ray, 63, of Natchez, who died Friday, April 30, 2004, in Natchez, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. B.L. Calcote officiating.
Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Ray was born
November 28, 1940, in Neshoba County, the son of Melvin Ray and Bessie Franklin Ray.
He was retired from the NATCHEZ - Adams County Airport, a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Cranfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Ann Ray of Natchez; two sisters, Leona (Johnny) Johnson of Bossier City, La., and Mary (Will) Knight of Wakefield, La.; two step-sons, Roscoe Moore of Columbia and Bruce Ford (Arlene) of Palmer, Texas; five step-daughters, Edna (Ferrel) Robertson and Betty (Jimmy) Hatcher, both of Greenville, Kayle Campbell of Evening Shade, Ark., and Margie (Jerry) Rollins and Tinnie (B.J.) Latham, both of Natchez; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Chuck Walker
JACKSON -- Services for Chuck Walker, 70, a longtime self-employed businessman of Jackson, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at home with his family by his side.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wright & Ferguson High Street Chapel with burial following at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today and will resume at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Walker was born
in Natchez and moved to Jackson when he was 13. He was the son of the late James Sharpe Walker and Sallie Nettles Walker.
For more than 35 years Mr. Walker owned and operated several local businesses in the Jackson area including service stations, U-Haul Rental Centers and an auto salvage business.
Honesty and fairness were words always associated with Chuck in his business dealings, and he had a natural sense of humor that drew people toward him.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, Chuck devoted his life to his family.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Jimmye Sullivan Walker; a son, Lyle Walker, and his wife, Tina, of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Lesa Gibson, and her husband, Jim, of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Ensign Chuck Walker III of Charleston, S.C., Melissa Walker, Matthew Walker and Christian Walker, all of Baton Rouge, and Austin Gibson, Caleb Gibson and Hunter Gibson, all of Birmingham; three sisters, Elaine Laird of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Lanelle Lewis of Jackson and Ruth Moak of Bogue Chitto; a dear sister-in-law, Margaret Watkins of Natchez; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers include Paul Walker, David Walker, Pete Walker, Jim Walker, Johnny Walker, Tommy Laird, Randy Grice, Joel Moak and Jimmy Walker.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Jackson V.A. Hospital for their kindness and compassion during his illness. They also are very grateful to everyone for all their prayers and loving support offered throughout these last months.
Matthew Harry Lovat Sanders Jr.
April 17, 1915 - April 23, 2004
Matthew Harry Lovat Sanders Jr., of Palo Alto, Calif. and Chevy Cause, Md., and retired Director of Planning for Stanford University died on April 23, 2004, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Mr. Sanders, 89, died following a brief illness.
born on April 17, 1915, in Greenwood, Mr. Sanders was a 1937 graduate in architecture from Tulane University. His architecture and planning career was highlighted by his leadership of Stanford University's largest campus expansion from 1956 until 1976, including the construction of the Stanford University Hospital and over 500 other campus projects. He also worked for the San Francisco Planning Department and the Redevelopment Agency and as a private residential and commercial architect. During World War II he worked for the Pacific Overseas Office of War Information as head of the Cable Wireless Division.
Mr. Sanders was a member of the Stanford faculty, the Stanford Library Associates and Stanford Historical Society. He was co-founder of the Society of College and University Planning and a life member of the American Institute of Planners. Mr. Sanders also consulted for the Ford Foundation and the University of California, Berkeley.
A world traveller, Mr. Sanders was known for his love of antiques, family history and genealogy.
Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 49 years, Marjorie Marchal Sanders.
He is survived by a son, Matthew H. L. Sanders III and his wife, Angela of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Marchal Sanders Meenan and her husband, John of Chevy Chase, Md.; five grandchildren, Maryann Marchal Heim, John Michael Meenan Jr. and Matthew James Sanders Meenan of Chevy Chase, Md., Kelly Corbett Sanders and Evan Matthew Sanders of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; and area relatives, Mrs. Basil G. Ballard and Mrs. F. D. Flinn of Natchez and Ms. Elizabeth Calhoun of Vidalia, La.
Mr. Sanders was the son of Mary Wright Mounger of Natchez and Matthew Harry Lovat Sanders of New Orleans, La.
Alpheus J. Leigh Jr.
March 23, 1927 - May 4, 2004
NATCHEZ - Services for Alpheus J. Leigh Jr., 77, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Bart Walker officiating.
Burial will follow at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church cemetery in Frankin County under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Leigh was born
March 23, 1927, in Charleston, the son of Alpheus J. and Eva Juanita Ashmore Leigh Sr.
He was a member of the Baptist church and worked 39 years for International Paper Company.
Mr. Leigh was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Buddy Leigh.
Survivors include his wife, Joel E. Leigh of Natchez; one son, Eddie Leigh and wife, Sandra of Natchez; four grandchildren; one half sister, Christine Riley of Arkansas; three half brothers, Kenneth Leigh, Johnny Leigh and Danny Leigh, all of Arkansas.
Annie Mary Smith Calhoun
Feb. 8, 1929 - May 2, 2004
NATCHEZ - Services for Annie Mary Smith Calhoun, 75, of Natchez, who died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at noon Thursday at Rose Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Stanton officiating.
Burial will be in the Natchez National cemetery under the direction of R.D. Mackel and Sons.
Visitation is from noon to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Smith was born
Feb. 8, 1929, in Natchez, the daughter of William Liddell Smith and Marie L. Toles Smith.
She attended Brumfield High School, was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Doris Marie Harding.
Survivors include her husband, Julius Calhoun Sr. of Natchez; two sons, Bishop James (Angela) Calhoun and Julius Calhoun Jr., all of Natchez; four daughters, Berta (Theodore) Yancy of Maywood, Ill., Lyndel (Jackie) Robinson of St. Louis, Mo., Patricia (Charles) Taylor of Dallas, Texas and Brenda (Clarence) Hardin of Natchez; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; a cousin, Tom (Mary Lee) Toles of Natchez; a brother-in-law, James Smith of New Orleans, La.; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Theodore J. Yancy Jr., Daryl Yancy, Ephraim Calhoun, Jackie Robinson Jr., Julius Hardin and Cassius Wright.
Harrison Orae "Ray" Cowart Sr.

NATCHEZ - Services for Harrison Orae "Ray" Cowart Sr., 78, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with Dr. Edgar Wright officiating.
Burial will be in the Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Cowart was born
August 27, 1925, in Security, La., the son of Wallace and Bessie Spinks Cowart.
He was a veteran of the US Navy in World War II. Mr. Cowart was employed with Armstron Tire and Rubber for many years. He retired from Brown and Root in Houston, Texas. Mr. Cowart was a member of Morgantown Baptist Church.
Mr. Cowart was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Cowart; mother, Bessie S. Stampley; daughter, Peggy W. Jensen.
Survivors include his wife, Velma Rushing Cowart of Natchez; son, Ray Cowart Jr. and wife, Lisa of Houston, Texas; daughter, Sue Whitehead and husband, Raleigh of Mobile, Ala.; stepchildren, Philip L. Smith of Bozeman, Mont., Mike Smith of Dallas, Texas, Jan Hancock of Vidalia, La.; grandchildren, Brian Whitehead, Kelli Whitehead, Chase Cowart, Beau White, Amanda Villerreall, Brad Smith, Dade Smith, Jennifer Golden, Patrick Golden, Mary Katherine Golden; and four great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Paul Smith, Oliver Lee, Ted Gray, Herman Eldridge, Charles Rayford Tynes, Johnnie Ratcliff.
Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Bernice Campbell
April 12, 1922 - April 29, 2004 WASHINGTON - Services for Bernice Campbell, 82, of Natchez, who died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Trace Haven Nursing Center, will be at noon Friday at St. Paul Baptist Church in Washington with the Rev. James Beverly officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Williams and Williams.
The procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. Friday from 99 Oriole St.
Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was a housewife, a member of St. Paul Baptist Church and loved gardening and sewing.
Survivors include two daughters, Laura Hardin and Lula (Charles C.) Hunt of Natchez; one sister, Mamie Williams of Natchez; four grandchildren, Tamamaca (Sgt. James) Ellis of Wichita Falls, Texas, Latrell (Calvin) Scott of Dallas, Ga., Fred L. (Debbie) Hunt of Natchez and Calvin L. Hunt of Marietta, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Yentl Hunt and Yenterial Hunt of Natchez, Fred Hunt Jr. of Baton Rouge, La., Fred Hunt III of Natchez, Jalyssa V. Ellis and James V. Ellis II of Wichita Falls, Texas.

KENT, Wash. - Memorial services for Emanuel "Buddy" Walker Jr., 63, 1SG E-8, Retired Army, formerly of Vidalia, La., who died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at his residence in Tacoma, Wash., were held at 1:30 p.m. May 6, 2004 at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent with eulogy by the Rev. Arthur T. Mayberry.
Fir Lane Funeral Home of Spanaway, Wash., was in charge of services.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuel Walker Sr. and Hattie Walker Garrison and brother, Louis Walker.
Survivors include two daughters, Angeline (Jorge') Andrade of Auburn, Wash. and Corena Walker of Tacoma, Wash.; one son, Wyatt Walker of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Dorothy W. Baker of Vidalia, La., DeBorah Jackson of Woodbridge, Va. and Cathy (Lee) Johnson of Hattiesburg; one brother, William Jackson of Natchez; one grandson, Zachary Walker Stevenson of Auburn, Wash.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Burial will be in Wilderness cemetery under the direction of Webb Funeral System.
Ms. Hardin was born
Dec. 30, 1956, in Natchez, the daughter of Mary L. Hardin and Lehman W. Hardin II.
She was retired, a member of King Solomon Baptist Church and a graduate of the North Natchez High School Class of 1974.
Ms. Hardin was preceded in death by her father and grandmothers, Frances Walker and Leola Hardin.
Survivors include her mother, Mary L. Hardin; brother, Lehman W. Hardin III; sisters, Patricia H. Blackwell, Theresa Hardin Minor, Mary F. Hardin and Nellie Jackson; uncles, Albert Walker and Therodore Hardin; aunts, Isabel Webster, Frances Coffin, Helena Walker and Alva Coats; son, Charles Anderson Jr.

Mrs. Jennings was born
Jan. 6, 1936, in Tree City, La., the daughter of Melvin Lee and Bernice Ashbey Campbell.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and The Natchez Garden Club.
Mrs. Jennings was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William L. Campbell.
Survivors include her husband, Charles A. Jennings Sr., of Natchez; daughter, Crystal J. York and husband, David of Natchez; son, Charles A. Jennings Jr. and wife, Renee of Natchez; sister, Carmen Walker and husband, Lynn of Magnolia, Ark.; sister-in-law, Gere' S. Campbell of Natchez; grandchildren, Bridget Bumgardner, Nicole B. Smith and husband Matt, Ashley Jennings, Megan Jennings and Chase Jennings; great grandchild, Sarah Lynn Smith; and a number of nieces and nephews.
