NATCHEZ - Services for John R. Benard, 73, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at noon Sunday at St. James A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Anthony Colenburg officiating.
Burial will be in the Natchez National cemetery under the direction of Webb Funeral System.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Benard was born
Jan. 4, 1929, in Jefferson County, the son of Robert and Beatrice Benard.
He was educated in the Jefferson County School System, was retired from Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company and was a member of the National Radio Institute and St. James A.M.E. Church where he served on the steward board, was treasurer of the church and a member of the choir.
Survivors include his wife, Elise Benard; one daughter, Cassandra Benard-Smith and her husband, Leon, both of Pacoima, Calif.; one step-daughter, Maxine Jackson of Natchez; two-stepsons, Larry Easton of Las Vegas and Ronnie Jackson and his wife, Linda, both of Desoto, Texas; two granddaughters, Tiffany Smith of Pacoima and Ciji Easton of Natchez; and two grandsons, Justin and Jonathan Jackson, both of Desoto.
Pallbearers will be Robert Robb, Ethan Robb, Glenn Robb, Thomas Robb, Charles Moore and Jamal Parker.
Addie Howard
HERMANVILLE - Services for Addie Howard, 82, of Hermanville, who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mountro Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Horace McBride officiating.
Burial will follow in the church's cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon until service time Sunday at the church.
Mrs. Howard was a member and usher of Mountro Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hampton Howard and Susie Young-Howard; one son, Earl Howard; three brothers, Jasper Howard, Ervin Howard and Phillip Howard; and two sisters, Emma J. Johnson and Rosie Spencer.
Survivors include two sons, Sidney Howard and Percy Howard, both of Harvey, La.; seven daughters, Sadie Williams and Maxine Howard, both of Carlisle, Florene Robinson of Hermanville, Juanita Howard and Joyce Howard, both of Gretna, La., Henrietta Howard Stamps and Gloria Lee, both of Marrero, La.; 49 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Lee Howard of Port Gibson; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Mildred A. Carter

NATCHEZ - Services for Mildred A. Carter, 85, of Natchez, who died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in Natchez, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. James E. Herndon officiating.
Burial will be at Natchez City cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from noon until service time Monday at the funeral home.
Ms. Carter was born
March 1, 1917, in McLaurin, the daughter of Colin P. and Stella Estes Carter.
She was a member of Jefferson Street Methodist Church and was retired from Adams County Board of Supervisors Office.
Ms. Carter was preceded in death by her parents; one son, David Lewis Carter; and one brother, Byron Patton Carter.
Survivors include one nephew, Patton Estes Carter of Hattiesburg; extended family, Pat and Bobby Powell, Robby Powell and John Michael Powell, all Natchez.
Pallbearers will be Larry Lawrence, Kevin Byrne, Tony Byrne, Lucien C. Gwin Jr., Bryant Reed and Bob M. Dearing.
Honorary pallbearers will be James H. Carter, Don Terry and Dr. Jack Rodriguez.
The family requests memorials be made to a charity of choice.
Michael Anthony Clay

NATCHEZ - Services for Michael Anthony Clay, 41, who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Baton Rouge General Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Visitation is from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the church.
Mr. Clay was born
Nov. 16, 1961, in Natchez, the son of James A. Clay Sr. and Lydia M. Woods Clay.
He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, attended South Natchez High School and was a graduate of Cathedral High School's Class of 1979. He played football, basketball and ran track. His most recent employment was with the Federal Security and Exxon Mobil Company.
Mr. Clay was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James and Lydia M. Woods; paternal grandparents, Sylvester Clay and Emma Pollard; and his mother, Lydia M. Woods Clay.
Survivors include his father, James A. Clay Sr.; three brothers, James A. Clay Jr. and his wife, Linda, both of Moss Point, Riley L. Clay Sr. and his wife, Mary and Kenneth M. Clay, all of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Chriscella Clay of Natchez and Monica J. Clay Morris and her husband, Michael, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; three aunts, Josie L. Davis of Kenner, La., Emily Gibbs of San Fernando Valley, Calif. and Cora Pollard of Los Angeles; one uncle, Henry Woods and his wife, Hilda, both of New Orleans; one great-aunt, Jean Watson of Chicago; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

NATCHEZ - Services for Roy Chisholm Nettles, 73, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Magnolia House, will be at 2 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. David Dow officiating.
Burial will follow in Nettles cemetery in Seven Pines Plantation in Woodville under the direction of the funeral home.
Visitation is from 1 p.m. until funeral time today at the funeral home.
Mr. Nettles was born
July 15, 1929, in Natchez, the son of Millard DeLeon and Hattie Mae Roy Nettles.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II in Germany as a medical technician, was employed at International Paper for 18 years, was a retired electronics maintenance worker at Natchez Regional Medical Center and a member of Westside Baptist Church. His hobby was radio/electronics.
Mr. Nettles was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Elsie Lorraine Nettles Van Vlymen.
Survivors include three brothers, Millard D. Nettles, Cecil D. Nettles and Percy W. Nettles; two sisters, Louise N. Wisner and Sandra G. Nettles; a niece, Kathryn Ann Spann; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Van Vlyman, Douglas Dean Nettles, Timothy D. Nettles, John Eric Brown, Jason Wisner and Eugene Barnes.

Ethel Gibson
PATTISON - Services for Ethel Gibson, 80, of Ridgeland, who died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at her residence, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Christian Church with the Rev. T.E. Harris officiating.
Burial will follow in the church's cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Port Gibson.
Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a family hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Visitation will also be held from 1 p.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Mrs. Gibson was a member and mother of St. Luke Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy Thompson and Lizzie Dee-Thompson; two brothers, Leroy Thompson and Louis Thompson; and four sisters, Annie Reed, Arcola Moore-Trunnel, Emma Savage and Lillie Davis.
Survivors include two sons, Roosevelt Smith of Fayette and Roan Gibson of Port Gibson; four daughters, Estella Gales of Detroit, Betty Hardges of Ridgeland, Joan Lynch of Dallas and Luejean Wagner of Redding, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Leota Bell Owens
June 24, 1911 - Dec. 25, 2002
CENTREVILLE - Services for Leota Bell Owens, 91, of Centreville, who died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville, will be at 2 p.m. today at Newman Funeral Home with the Rev. Willis Cochran officiating.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn cemetery in Centreville under the direction of the funeral home.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Owens was born
June 24, 1911, the daughter of Eugene Carroll and Sarah Minnie Tousinau Hughes.
She was a member of Centreville United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Owens Sr.; one sister, Louise Hopkins; and four brothers, Eugene "Tip" Hughes, John Carroll Hughes, William D. Hughes and Geoffrey Hughes.
Survivors include three daughters, Leota "Mitzi" Forman and Gloria Owens Baggett, both of Baker, La., and Janice Owens Stewart of Albany, La.; two sons, David Dewitt Owens Jr. of Centreville and Stanley E. Owens of Vidalia, La.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Stan Owens Jr., David D. Owens III, Darron Cunningham, Dale Owens, Mike Forman and Andy Moon.
Frank Barland

NATCHEZ - Services for Frank Barland, 81, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at George F. West Funeral Home with the Rev. Oscar Davis officiating.
Burial was in Pine Hill Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of the funeral home.
Mr. Barland was born
Oct. 15, 1921, the son of Lucille Hicks.
Survivors include his foster mother, Katie Hawkins of Natchez; one son, Fredrick Bernard Adams of New Orleans; and a number of cousins.
Pallbearers were friends of the family.

Mr. Byrd was born
Nov. 8, 1938, in Natchez, the son of Ben and Mary Etta Arnold Byrd.
He was a member of the Christlife fellowship, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and coached youth athletics.
Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Geneva Byrd Floyd and Sybil Byrd Smith; and one niece, Carmen Byrd.
Survivors include his wife, Gayle Hammett Byrd; one son, Allan Byrd and his wife, Susie, both of Natchez; two daughters, Janet Good and her husband, Lavell, and Connie Taylor and her husband, Rusty, all of Meadville; six grandchildren, Casey Good, Brandon Good, Brandi Taylor and Amanda Taylor, all of Meadville, and Malori Byrd and Benjamin Byrd, both of Natchez; three brothers, Don Byrd of Sanger, Texas, Bennie Byrd of Natchez and Tom Allen "Jack" Byrd of Meadville; two sisters, Guynell Hall of Natchez and JoAnn Hollingsworth of Baker, La.; and 23 nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Cox, Vernon "Doonie" White, Roger Arnold, Lavell Good, Rusty Taylor and Charlie Fletcher.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Cox, Bill Riley, L.C. Murray and Dr. Ben Yarbrough.
