Neil Langston, 71, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Como, died April 11, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. He was a truck driver for the City of Chicago for 33-1/2 years. He was a member of New Greater True Light MB Church in Chicago, manager of Westside Torando Little League Team in Chicago, Ill. and a professional barber for 40 years.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 17 at Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Como. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.

He leave his wife, Mary Langston; four daughters, Cheryl M. Roberts, Verlinda Renee Douglas, Valencia Lanya Douglas, DeAnna L. Langston, all of Chicago, Ill.; three sons, Gregory L. Harris of Charlotte, N.C., Adrian B. Wolford Sr., Angelo M. Wolford, both of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Bessie Porter of Coldwater; a brother, Henry Langston of Chicago, Ill.; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John H. Lewellen
John H. Lewellen, 94, of Holly Springs, died April 14, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, and a school bus driver with H.W. Byers Schools.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 17 at Hopewell No. 2 M.B. Church in Hudsonville, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Danny Kimbrough officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a stepdaughter, Flossie Lee Woodson of Holly Springs; a stepson, Elmo Lyles of Holly Springs; a sister, Lorine Bell of Holly Springs; and a grandson.

Pallbearers were Melvin Luellen, Larry Luellen, Willie Campbell, Elmore Campbell, Royce Luellen, Robert Bell, William Bell, Robert Woodson. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Lyles, Jerry Harris, Johnny Lyles, Allen Gardner, Arthur Cowan, Harvey Strickland Sr., Travis Isom, Herman Houston.

John McAuley
John (Doug) McAuley, 43, of Red Banks, died April 16, 2005 at his home. He was a member of Newell Chapel CME Church and employed at the Internal Revenue Service in Memphis as a computer analyst.

Services were held at 5 p.m. on April 21 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Spencer Mathis officiated.

He leaves his parents, Guy and Lessie McAuley of Red Banks; a sister, Debra Gibson of Detroit, Mich.; three brothers, Curtis McAuley of Nashville, Tenn., Stanley McAuley of Holly Springs, Leslie McAuley of San Bernadino, Calif.; his grandparents, John Parker of Red Banks, Bessie McAuley of Byhalia; two nieces, and three nephews.

Napoleon Moore Sr.
Napoleon Moore Sr., 56, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Waterford, died April 12, 2005 at St. John Hospital in Detroit. He was a factory worker.

Services were held at 12 noon on April 17 at Greenfield Presbyterian Church in Waterford. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Coker George officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves three sons, Napoleon Moore Jr., Lamont Moore, Brandon Robinson, all of Detroit; two sisters, Magdalene Hughes of Batavia, Ill., Vannetter Moore of Aurora, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Alvin Curry, Ephram N. Curry, Levi Gladney, Bennard Moore, Robert C. Curry, Booker T. Curry, A.C. McGowan, James T. Moore. Honorary pallbearers were Waybon Adams, Elcue N. Curry, Eugene Huges, Charlie Marion, Clen D. Moore Jr., Adell Walker, Creed Walker.

Nancy Evans
Nancy Evans, 84, of Albany, Ga., formerly of Holly Springs, died April 12, 2005 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Alfred Cleveland Evans. She worked as a sales lady with Sears.

She will be buried in Lebanon Community cemetery. Matthews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Tryphenia McKinnon
Tryphenia McKinnon, 83, of Holly Springs, died April 18, 2005 at her home. She served on the church usher board. She was a member of the Holly Springs Federation Club and the American Legion Post 250. She retired from the Marshall County Health Department.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 23 at Anderson Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs, where she was a member. Rev. Denise Anders-Modest officiated. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Gardens. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sons, Anthony McKinnon of Holly Springs, Lincoln McKinnon of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Hazel Ivory of Palm Bay, Fla., Odella McKinnon of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Mahlon Mims of Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Youtie B. Miller
Youtie B. Miller, 67, of Champaign, Ill., formerly of Waterford, died in Champaign. He became a member of New Hope MB Church in Waterford at age nine. He moved to Champaign, Ill., in 1955. He joined Pilgram MB Church where he served as an usher. He later became a member of Church of the Living God in Champaign. He was employed by Twin City Fish and Poultry Company for 22 years.

He leaves his wife, Willie Mae Miller; 12 children, Roger, Bruce, Rosita, Maryann, J.B., Jerome, Pam, Juanita, Trenin, Chataka, Latisha, and Veda; two sisters, Hattie Marion, Virginia Payne; 23 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Enoch Miller, Bernard Miller and Barnie Miller.

Alice Mullins Ayers

Alice Mullins Ayers, 72, of Memphis, Tenn., died Feb. 8, 2006 at her home.

Services were held at 12 noon on Feb. 14 at Shiloh MB Church in Ashland, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Dr. Roosevelt T. Joyner officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Anne Rockett-Phillips of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Lottie Mae Payne of Holly Springs; two brothers, Eugene Mullins of Holly Springs, James Lewis Mullins of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jeremy Martin, Taylor Phillips, Devin Rockett, Kevin Smith, Quentin Ayers and Clarence Ayers III.

Thomas Howard Buford

Thomas Howard Buford, 83, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 11, 2006 at his home. He was the retired postmaster of Holly Springs, having retired in December of 1988. He served in World War II and later. He served in the Normandy campaign in France and later in Belgium and Germany while in the 438th anti-aircraft artillery battalion. After the war, he served in the United States Army artillery reserves, retiring in 1961 with the rank of captain. He was a Boy Scout leader, organizing Troop 119 of Holly Springs and was honored with the Silver Beaver award.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Dr. Milton Winter officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Tommy Jean Martin Buford; a daughter, Pamela Jean Bray of Holly Springs; three sons, Thomas Howard Buford Jr. of Lexington, Ky., Robert Carlisle Buford of Potts Camp, Donald Eugene Buford of Holly Springs; a brother, Richard L. Buford of Madison; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jenny Dale Bell, Ernestine Smallwood; and three brothers, Charles, Julius and Dudley.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Albert Rodger Cunningham

Albert Rodger Cunningham, 71, of Olive Branch, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a mechanic.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb 10 at Carey Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. O.E. Langner and Bro. Doug Bell officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Esther Ruth Cunningham; three sons, Joseph Rodger Cunningham, Danny Patrick Cunningham, both of Red Banks, William Douglas Cunningham of Southaven; a daughter, Linda Kay Hornbeck of Olive Branch; two brothers, John Paul Cunningham of Olive Branch, Bobby Joe Cunningham of Mt. Home, Ark.; two sisters, Florence Petrowski of Red Banks, Nancy Puckett of Greenfield, Tenn.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, April Marie Cunningham.

Pallbearers were Joe Cunningham, Danny Cunningham, Randy McClatchy, Wayne Hornbeck, Fred West, Doug Cunningham, Mark Watkins, Little Joe Cunningham, Scott Templeton and Brent Carpenter.

Reddick Duncan

Reddick Duncan, 68, of Ashland, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Briarcrest Nursing Home in Ashland.

Services were held at 12 noon on Feb. 11 at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves three daughters, Deloris Jackson of Memphis, Tenn., Willie Eva Duncan, Lula B. Duncan, both of Holly Springs; three sons, Stanley Duncan, George Duncan, Charles Duncan, all of Holly Springs; three sisters, Lizz Fuzz, Mae Ree Jones, Catherine Jones, all of Memphis, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.

Alice Louise Steele
Alice Louise Steele, 90, of Memphis, Tenn., died April 19, 2005 in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Lloyd N. Steele.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on April 28 at Cogbill cemetery in Wynne, Ark. Rev. Beth Perdue and Rev. Dennis Neenan officiated. Kernodle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sons, Richard Ragon Steele of Cordova, Tenn., Terry Joe Steele of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Betty Jean Steele Wimberly of Waterford; two brothers, Forrest Mitchell, C.W. (Bill) Mitchell of Wynne; a sister, Mary Mitchell Combs of Cordova; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Clyde Campbell Teel
Clyde Campbell Teel, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, died April 25, 2005 at his home. A member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, he was a retired farmer and employee of the Marshall County School System. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. One of the first soldiers to embark at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion on July 6, 1944, he was awarded the European Campaign Medal with the Silver Star and Arrowhead, the Good Conduct Medal, the Honorable Service Award and the Presidential Unit Emblem.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on April 28 at Carey Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Bro. Troy Styers, Bro. Arnold Goode, Bro. Carl Teel, Bro. O.E. Langner, Bro. Jimmy Sparks and Bro. Ken Guffey will officiate. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Allene Gardner Teel; a son, Ivy Wayne Teel of Mt. Pleasant; three daughters, Martha Fant of Holly Springs, Kathy Goode of Mt. Pleasant, Madge Winburn of Hickory Flat; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Teel, Knox Teel, Curtis Teel; and four sisters, Ethel Joyner, Etoile Langston, Orene Tollison and Ava Belle Johnson.

Pallbearers were Gary Teel, Danny Goode, Paul Goode, David Goode, Randy Mayer, Chris Winburn. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Langston, Daniel Teel, Tony Kelly, Claude Pannell, Bill Harris, Blake Palmer, Michael Green, Monroe Bolden, Billy McClure, Don Bumpas and Preston Dunn.

Gloria DeHaven Brown

Gloria DeHaven Brown, 49, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 19, 2006 at her home. She was a member of New Dimension Salt and Light Ministries in Holly Springs, a 1975 graduate of Holly Springs High School and a cook with Rust College cafeteria.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 25 at Rust College Doxey Auditorium. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Elder Actavatis Allen officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Deitrick Brown of Holly Springs; her mother, Elizabeth Crumb Brown of Holly Springs; three sisters, Loretta Brown of Holly Springs, Janie Ayres of Memphis, Tenn., Viola Hughes of Aurora, Ill.; and two brothers, Marcello Brown of Aurora, Ill., Wendell Brown of Ashland.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Brown and Walter Jones.

Pallbearers were Tyrone Crumb, Cecil Adkins, Darren Jones, Javon Adkins, John Lee Spight, Lonnie Beard, Anthony Crumb, Johnny Beard, Arthur Beard and Agrippa Bryson. Honorary pallbearers were Wendell Brown Sr., Darryl Ayers, Joseph Shelby, Wendell Brown II, Milton Baines and Barry Jones.

Maxine Scott Fant

Maxine Scott Fant, 93, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 21, 2006 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Leo Fant. She was a church usher, a member of the choir and mother’s board, a former Sunday school teacher, Homemaker Extension and a member of Heroines of Jericho Court 14.

Services were held at 12 noon on Nov. 26 at Finley Grove MB Church in Holly Springs, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. James Green officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, James W. Ford Sr. of Holly Springs; a sister, Creasie Benford of Cayce; a brother, Moses Scott of Cayce; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Powell Chapel Masonic Lodge #339. Honorary pallbearers were her grandsons.

David Prince Howery

David Prince Howery, 55, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Lamar, died Nov. 16, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of Eternal Mercy Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Memphis and a mechanic with Power House Motor.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 22 at Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Memphis. Burial was in Foundation of Life Church cemetery in Lamar. Rev. Bush officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two daughters, Marcia Dotson, Tiffany Willis, both of Memphis; three sons, David Payne, Floyd Arnold, Jackie Arnold, all of Memphis; his mother, Marion Slate Howery of Lamar; eight sisters, Shirley Raimey, Barbara Howery, both of Lamar, Mary Sue Daugherty of Collierville, Tenn., Jackie Howery of Houston, Texas, Denise Howery, Delois Hampton, both of Memphis, Virlene Dowdy of Aurora, Ill., Annie Jackson of Williston, Tenn.; three brothers, Lenton Howery of Joplin, Missouri, Mark Howery of Holly Springs, Morris Smith of Memphis; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Prince Howery.

Pallbearers were Kevin Howery, Dewayn Howery, Antonio Willis, Carlos Howery, Desmond Willis and Floyd Arnold. Honorary pallbearers were Eddie Mathis, Walter Daugherty and Daryl Murray.
