Gracie Balfour Jackson

Gracie Balfour Jackson, 87, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 17, 2005 at Briarcrest Extended Care Home in Ashland. The widow of Eligah Jackson, she was a member of Providence MB Church in Holly Springs and a retired domestic worker in private homes.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 21 at Beverly Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs. Rev. S.A. Phillips officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Addie Jones of Holly Springs; Helen Hollingsworth of Oxford; a special grandson whom she raised, Rodell Jackson of Holly Springs; one sister, Louise Finley of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother Wesley Balfour of Holly Springs; 19 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two children, Lillie Mae Alexander and Silas Jackson.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were Dexter Shipp, Willie Collins, Obie Snow and Bobby Tilman.

Julie Ann Laprise

Julie Ann Laprise, 48, of Ashland, died Dec. 18, 2005 at her home.

She leaves a son, James Rhea White of Ashland.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 21 at Ashland cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Fonta Woodson O’Dell

Fonta Woodson O’Dell, 88, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 24, 2005. The widow of Charles Lee O’Dell, she was an educator with the Holly Springs School District, one of the original members of the Library Board and a member of the Humane Society.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 28 at First Presbyterian Church of Holly Springs, where she was a member. Dr. Milton Winter and Rev. Don Wilson officiated. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Charles Denton O’Dell of Perry, Ga.; a daughter, Margaret O’Dell of Holly Springs; a sister, Martha Stewart of Sunnyside, WA.; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Woodson O’Dell and a grandson, Robert Dee O’Dell.

Cinderella Sims Taylor

Cinderella Sims Taylor, 83, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 20, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The widow of Charlie E. Taylor Sr. , she was Missionary, Usher and Stewardess in her church.

Services were held at 12 noon, Dec. 23 at Yarbrough Chapel CME Church where she was a member. Rev. George Taylor officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Marjean Myatt of Holly Springs; Rubye Pool of San Diego, Calif.; five sons, Charlie Taylor Jr., John Taylor, Alvin Taylor, all of Holly Springs; Otha Taylor of Ann Arbor, Mich.; George Taylor of West Point; two sisters, Martha B. Jones and Josie S. Freeman, both of Holly Springs; two brothers, John D. Sims Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Robert Lee Sims of Holly Springs; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one god-granddaughter.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Carl Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Jermaine Taylor, Demetrius Taylor, Tony Taylor, Kevin Taylor, Keith Taylor and Alvin Taylor.

Dorothy Dickson Boren

Dorothy Dickson Boren (affectionately known as Hobby Dee), 86, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 12, 2005 at Baptist Memorial in Oxford. She was the widow of Sowell Boren. She was a member of Victoria Baptist Church and an employee with Gem, Inc for 25 years.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 14 at Temperence Hill Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She leaves two daughters, Sheryl Dickson German of Chattanooga, Tenn., Jane Dickson Brisco of Holly Springs; two sons, Kenith Dickson of Holly Springs, Brooks Dickson of Olive Branch; a sister, Etoil Harkness of Ecru; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Dickson Smith; and grandson, Caleb Bishop.

Mary Lynn Brown

Mary Lynn Brown, 79, died Dec. 7 at her home in Holly Springs. She was the daughter of Lynn Boyd Hopson and Lucie Emily Hopson, nee Roane and the sister of Ben L. Evans. A 1943 graduate of Holly High School, she worked at the Oak Ridge, Tenn. research facility of the Manhattan Project during World War II. She attended Mississippi State College for Women. Following her marriage in 1947, she lived in New Orleans, La.; Jackson, Memphis, Tenn.; Nashville, Tenn. and Atlanta, Ga., before returning to Holly Springs in 1971. She was a caregiver during her mother’s last years of life, a faithful member of Holly Springs First United Methodist Church and had been a member, among other organizations, of The Thursday Club and the Holly Springs Country Club. She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 10 at First United Methodist Church with Mrs. Charles King as organist and Bill Wage as soloist. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Rev. Milton Boyd officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband of 58 years, Eugene Dabney Brown; a son, Judge Eugene Dabney Brown Jr.; and three granddaughters, Lynn H. Brown, Margaret (Margie) R. Brown and F. Dabney Brown, all of Holly Springs.

Pallbearers were Bobby Bonds, B.B. House, Bobby House, Fred Carlisle, Mark Miller, Tom Stewart, Ben Evans and Tim Liddy.

The family requests that any memorials be sent to First United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ruth Louise McAlexander Crawley

Ruth Louise McAlexander Crawley, 90, of Vicksburg, died Dec. 7, 2005 in Vicksburg. She was the widow of Henry Fant (Pep) Crawley. She was a 1933 graduate of Holly Springs High School. She and her family were longtime members of First Baptist Church in Holly Springs.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Hill Crest cemetery.

She leaves her family: Kathy Crawley, Jackie Arnold, Melissa and Alvin Word; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Audubon Mississippi (“Mack Project), Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, 285 Plains Road, Holly Springs, MS 38635; or First Baptist Church, 1607 Cherry Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180.

Moss R. Gibson

Moss R. Gibson, 83, of Lamar, died Dec. 1, 2005 at Baptist Hospital in Oxford. He was a member of Masonic Lodge in Ripley.

Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 10 at Palestine MB Church in Ashland. Burial was in South Ashland Church of Christ cemetery. Superintendent Bernell Hoyle officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Annie Gibson; seven daughters, Bobbie Black of Columbus, Ohio, Annette Lockett of Collierville, Tenn., Lizzie Mae Gibson, Verlean Gibson, Starlean Harper, Sandra Gibson, all of Memphis, Tenn., Brenda Gibson of Lamar; three sons, Russell Gibson of Ashland, Joe Thomas Gibson of Lamar, Wallace Gibson of Lakeland, Tenn.; and 30 grandchildren.

Sylvester Jones Jr.

Sylvester Jones Jr., 62, of Lamar, died Dec. 2, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. He was a factory worker with General Electric in Chicago, Ill.

Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 11 at Hudsonville CME Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Gladys Jones; five daughters, Hazel Jones, Tangyle Williams, both of Chicago, Ill., Keisha Humphrey, Patricia Luellen, both of Slayden, Carol Jones of Memphis, Tenn.; four stepdaughters, Rose Jones, Pam Jones, both of Slayden, Michelle Jones of Chicago, Ill., Joyce Jones of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Keith Jones of Holly Springs, Michael Duncan of Memphis, Tenn.; a stepson, Lee Jones of Holly Springs; seven sisters, Fannie Stephen, Evelyn Shields, Rosie Stephen, Charetta Harris, all of Slayden, Mozell Strong of Holly Springs, Ardelia Briggs, Mae Ellen Stephen, both of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Eloritt Coleman of Chicago, Ill., Robert L. Jones of Slayden; and 22 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Coy Lee Jones.

Pallbearers were Courtney Harris, Sylvester Murphy, Melvin Jones, Antonio Nunnally, Neil Shields, Terry Humphrey, Orlando Stephens and Kevin Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Brian Shields, Willie Leon Nunnally, Michael Stephens, Michael Murphy, Kelvin Stephens and Lee Jones.

Willie Carter Jones

Willie Carter Jones, 79, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 2, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. He was a church trustee, church steward, church treasurer and class leader.

Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 8 at Yarbrough Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe T. Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Martha B. Sims Jones; seven daughters, Gloria Gipson, Vadis Lee, Shirley Powell, Bonita Porter, all of Holly Springs, Sylvia Jones, Bridget Gill, both of Killeen, Tx., Cinder Jones of Memphis, Tenn.; four sons, Ira Jones of Nashville, Tenn., Lawrence Jones, John Jones, both of Detroit, Mich., Willie C. Jones Jr. of Holly Springs; a sister, Irene Butler of Memphis, Tenn.; 38 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Bernard Jones, Eric Jones, Duwon Jones, Wesley Brown, Tashun Jones, Montaque Lee, Willie Edward Jones, Jamal Porter, Maurice Lee Jr., Leonard Jones, Patrick Jones, Anthony Jones, Kenyatta Jeffries and Tyrone Jones. Honorary pallbearers were his nephews, Leslie King Sr., Ernest Jones Jr., James Jones and M.H. Jones.

Francis Inez Kirk

Francis Inez Kirk, 84, of Hickory Flat, died Dec. 9, 2005 at Quince Nurse and Rehab. She was the widow of Hogan Kirk and a Baptist. She was retired from Wurlitzer Co.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 13 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cornersville cemetery.

She leaves two daughters, Maxine Starnes of Olive Branch, Bobbie Blackburn of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother; six sisters; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Billie Miller

Billie Miller, 59, of Michigan City, died Dec. 7, 2005 at Wellstar Kenistone Hospital in Villa Rica, Ga. He was a Baptist, an engineer and an Army veteran of Vietnam.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 10 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Early Grove cemetery in Michigan City.

He leaves his fiance’, Sue Beasley of Villa Rica, Ga.; three daughters, Billie Michelle Miller-Peck of Wichita, Kan., Billie Bridgette Bush of Sugargrove, Ga., Brittany Beasley of Villa Rica, Ga.; four brothers, Charles Miller of Ft. Scott, Kan., Jerry Miller of El Dorado, Kan., Johnny Miller of Holly Springs, Arthur (Ras) Carpenter of Michigan City; three sisters, Shirley Clarkson of Holly Springs, Barbara Ann Pickens of Tupelo, Laverne Miller of Lamar; and five grandchildren, Rebeckha Davenport, William Miller, Brandon Miller, Madison Miller, Little Billy.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, his twin Bobby Miller and Ben Miller; and a sister, Carolyn Clements.

Daniel Morris Phillips

Daniel Morris Phillips, 47, of Oxford, died Dec. 12, 2005 at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital. He was assistant publisher at The Oxford Eagle and an award-winning writer and photographer. He served in several leadership positions with the National Newspaper Association, including a term as president in 1999-2000. As president of the Mississippi Press Association in 1997-98, he was instrumental in forming the Mississippi Center for Freedom of Information, headquartered at the University of Mississippi. He was named among the “Top 40 Under 40” by the Mississippi Business Journal in 1998. He was also recognized that year by the University of Mississippi department of journalism as one of the top 50 alumni as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebration. He was a current member of the board of trustees for the National Kidney Foundation of Mississippi. He was a member of the Oxford Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, and was an active member of Oxford University United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Oxford University United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Black and Rev. Bob Whiteside officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home.

He leaves his wife Susan Schove Phillips; two daughters, Margaret Goodwyn Phillips and Mary August Phillips; his parents, Jesse P. and Jeanette Phillips; two brothers, Tim Phillips and Andy Phillips; and his mother-in-law Margaret (Peggy) Schove, all of Oxford.

Memorials may be made to Oxford University United Methodist Church, 424 S. 10th Street, Oxford, MS 38655; to the National Kidney Foundation of Mississippi, P.O. Box 55802, Jackson, MS 39296; or to the Daniel M. Phillips Scholarship, University of Mississippi Department of Journalism, University, MS 38677.
