Funeral services for Otto Hinze Ray, 71, were held Friday, May 30, 2003 at 11 a. m. at Hinze Baptist Church. Burial followed in Hinze Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Paul Blanchard and Rev. Mike Skipper officiated.

Ray died May 27, 2003 at his home.

Ray was born February 16, 1932 in Winston County. He was a member of Hinze Baptist Church. He was retired salesman for Silverline Plastics and Dixie Wholesale Waterwork. He was also an U. S. Army Korean War Veteran.

Ray is survived by his wife, Iona Lloyd Ray of McCool; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Kenneth Barrett Pace of Waynesville, N. C. ; four sons and three daughters-in-laws, Thomas Hinze and Michelle Grifka of Zachary, LA, Charles Lloyd Barrett of Brazoria, TX, Dwight Edward and Jeannie Barrett of Brazoria, TX, Willard Ray and Carmel Barrett of Alvin, TX; sister, Jewelene Shoemaker of McCool; three brothers, Wallace Ray of Ocean Springs, Garland Ray of McCool and Billy Joe Ray of McCool; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Hinze Baptist Church in McCool.

Howard McKinzie

June 3, 2003

Funeral services for Howard McKinzie, 85, were held Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 2 p. m. at Porter Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Betheden Cemetery. Dr. Don Boone officiated.

McKinzie died June 3, 2003 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

McKinzie was born March 25, 1918 in Winston County. He served as a deacon for First Baptist Church in Louisville. He was retired self-employed trucker.

McKinzie is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Frankie" McKinzie; three daughters, Gloria Johnson of Louisville, Shirley Whiteside of Germantown, TN, Ann Cobb of Batesville; one step-daughter, Grace Maria Miller of Somerville, TN; one stepson George D. Miller of Starkville; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church in McCool.

Roger Dempsey

Funeral services for Roger Dempsey, 59, were held Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 2 p. m. at Porter Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Welcome Chapel Church Cemetery. Rev. Eddie Agnew and Rev. Mike Mullins officiated.

Dempsey died June 1, 2003 at University Hospital in Jackson.

Dempsey was born November 18, 1943 in Winston County. He was a retired plywood superintendent for Georgia Pacific.

Dempsey is survived by his wife, Inez Dempsey; three daughters and one son-in-law, Lesa and Ricky Wright of Louisville, Linda Dempsey of Louisville, and Lori Dempsey of Louisville; one sister, Gladys Eubanks of Louisville; four brothers, Buford Dempsey, Silas Dempsey, Kenneth Dempsey and Connie Dempsey, all of Louisville; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Welcome Chapel Church of Louisville.

Funeral services for Leila Mae Eaves, 94, were held Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 1 p. m. at First Presbyterian Church of Louisville. Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Sam Smith and Rev. Bob Schwanebeck officiated.

Eaves died June 4, 2003 at Forrest General Hospital.

Eaves was born March 20, 1909 in Winston County. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Louisville. She was retired elementary school teacher.

Eaves is survived by one son Thomas Hudson Eaves; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Louisville.

Kimalisha Shanae Austin

May 30, 2003

Funeral services for Kimalisha Shanae Austin, 22, were held Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 1 p. m. at Mt. Sinai M. B. Church of Louisville. Burial followed in at Mt. Sinai M. B. Church Cemetery. Rev. L. B. Hathorn officiated.

Austin died May 30, 2003 at University Medical Center in Jackson after an automobile accident.

Austin was born November 10, 1980 in Winston County. She was a member of Mt. Sinai M. B. Church of Louisville. She was a laborer for Choctaw Maids.

Austin is survived by her mother, Julie Faye Baker of Louisville; her father, Oga Lee Austin of Kosciusko; two sisters, Kantassa Shenet Austin and LaShonna Shyreece Austin both of Louisville; brother, Kareem Kamaal Bragg of Louisville; grandparents, Dixie Davenport, Walter Shields, Annie G. Austin and Leogan Austin; and on god son.

Gerald Harlon Triplett

June 1, 2003

Graveside funeral services for Gerald Harlon Triplett, 70, were held Friday, June 6, 2003 at 2p. m. at Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Paul Williamson officiated with Mack Brown assisting.

Triplett died June 1, 2003 at the VA Hospital in Jackson.

Triplett was born December 7, 1932. He was a long time resident of Louisville, his hometown, where he lived after serving in the U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force. The last few years he was a resident of the Veterans Home in Kosciusko where he met and new friends and contacted old friends. He was always ready to participate in chapel or church services by playing his harmonica. He attended Louisville High School. While in high school, he joined the Army National Guard and in 1950 his unit was mobilized and he served his country in the U. S. Army. After his discharge from the Army and a short time as a civilian, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. He worked as a fireman in the Air Force and was stationed at bases in the United State and in Morocco.

Triplett is survived by his son, Gerald Harlon Triplett, Jr. of Tallahassee, FL; a sister-in-law, Katherine Sowell of Tallahassee, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry G. Lawrence

Memorial services for Larry G. Lawrence, 51, were held Friday, June 6, 2003 at 3:30 p. m. at Nowell-Tilgham Chapel.

Lawrence died May 30, 2003 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.

Lawrence is survived by one sister, Jeanette Luke of Louisville and one brother, Johnny Lawrence of Tuscaloosa, AL; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Nowell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John William Holdiness

July 21, 2003

Services for John William Holdiness, 77, of Preston, were held July 23, 2003 at Nowell -Tilghman Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Joe Butler, Bro. Gerald Butler, and Bro. Billy Sardis officiating. Interment followed in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Holdiness died July 21, 2003 at Winston Medical Center.

Holdiness was born January 18, 1926. He was a World War II veteran and retired from TVA after 38 years.

He was a member and deacon of Ebenezer Pentecostal Church, a member of the American Legion Post 62, a member of the Masonic lodge, Scottish Rite, and the Shrine Hamasa Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Gaddie B. Holdiness of Louisville; two daughters, Shirley Hawkins and Barbara Walton, both of Louisville; two sons, Johnny Holdiness of Louisville and Jackie Holdiness of Preston; three sisters, Doris Reed of Preston, Mamie Cook of Heidelburg, and Faye Gregory of Louisville; four brothers, Max Holdiness of Vicksburg; Junior Holdiness of Louisville; Kellis Holdiness of Preston and J. W. Holdiness of Vicksburg.

Nowell-Tilghman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shirley Dawkins Finch

July 13, 2003

Mrs. Shirley Dawkins Finch was born on April 3, 1937 in Louisville to the proud and blessed parents, Talmadge Dawkins and Versie Carter Dawkins. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend W. L. Brown, Sr.

She attended Louisville Colored School in Louisville where she received her early academic education. She united in holy matrimony with Jessie Finch on December 27, 1952. To this union 6 children were born.

In 1955, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her husband. After moving to Milwaukee, she united with the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Hugh Davis, Jr. She was faithful and a dedicated member of the Nurses Guild, until her illness occurred.

She was employed with various companies in Milwaukee. She dedicated her life to helping other people. She spent many years working for the Department of Aging as a caregiver provider.

Mrs. Shirley Finch silently entered into eternal peace on Sunday, July 13, 2003 at Saint Joseph's Hospital. She was preceded in death by her son, Jessico Michael Finch, Sr.

Survivors include, her parents, Talmadge and Versie Dawkins; her beloved husband, Jessie Finch; one son, Deacon Robert (Nannie) Finch of Louisville; four daughters, Michele Finch, Meacher Finch, Melissa (Jesse) Hudson, and Melinda Finch, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one daughter-in-law, Angela Finch of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one sister-in-law, Claudia (Nate) Woods of Milwaukee; sixteen grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; three aunts; and two uncles.

Mr. Travis Drury

July 28, 2003

Funeral services for Travis Drury were held Thursday. July 31, at 3:00 p. m. from Mars Hill Pentecostal Church in Winston County. Rev. Franklin Smith and Sister Kitty Hale officiated. Burial was in Mars Hill Cemetery under the direction of McClain - Hays Funeral Home.

Mr. Drury, 63, of Carriere, died Monday, July 28, 2003 in Crosby Memorial Hospital in Picayune. He was a native of Louisville and was a retired saw filer from Rutland Lumber Company in Collins. Mr. Drury was a member of Picayune Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Drury of Carriere ; two daughter, Renee Riley of Columbia and Lynn Drury of New Orleans; two sons, Russell Drury and Shane Drury, both of Carriere; two grandchildren; mother, Nona Drury of Noxapater; five sisters, Bernice Sisson, Clytee Manning, and Mavis Eakes, all of Philadelphia, Linda Fortune of Kosciusko, and Sherry Clay of Noxapater; two brothers, Douglas Drury of Noxapater and Jerry Drury of Philadelphia.

Pallbearers were Greg Sisson, Rayford Manning, Jeff Fortune, Youn Drury, Brian Gautier, Derrick Jenkins, and Matthew Jenkins.

Mr. Ray Pilgrim

July 25, 2003

Funeral services for Mr. Ray Pilgrim were held Sunday July 27 at 4 p. m. from the chapel of McClain - Hays Funeral Home. Rev. Bobby Lowrey and Rev. Fred Frazier, Jr. officiated. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery in Noxapater. \

Mr. Pilgrim, 55, of Southhaven died Friday, July 25, 2003 in Baptist Memorial Hospital, Desoto in Southhaven.

He was born in Neshoba County where he lived most of his life except for the past two years he was a resident of Southhaven. Mr. Pilgrim was an independent insurance agent and had served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. Survivors include his wife, Joan Pilgrim of Southhaven; one daughter, Kristin Raye Pilgrim of Philadelphia; one son, Justin Wafe Pilgrim of Philadelphia; one grandchild; two step-sons, Jason Jones and Kevin Jones both of Philadelphia; mother, Allene Pilgrim of Noxapater; two sisters, Ann Holdiness and Barbara Young both of Louisville and two brothers, Daniel Pilgrim of Brooksville and Jimmy Pilgrim of Noxapater. Pallbearers were David Weatherford, Chris Burt, Kerry Salter, Tony Wright, Wesley Warren, Ricky Stewart, Randy Allege, Bobby Butler and Mont Mars.

Mr. Ver'dene McQueen

July 18, 2003

Ver'dene McQueen was born on March 29, 1932 in Louisville to Selma and Martha Gage McQueen. He departed this life on July 18, 2003. Services were held Saturday, July 26, 2003 at 11 a. m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Louisville. Rev. Tom Doss Officiated with Hampton Funeral Home in charge.

Ver'dene attended church at Bethel Baptist. He received his primary education in Louisville, and later attended Rust College from 1950-54, where he earned his degree in Social Science and English.

In 1957 and 1958, Ver'dene played baseball with the Memphis Red Sox Negro American League. He played on the team with Charlie Pride and against the team with Hank Aaron. In 1970, he moved to Rock Island, IL where he worked for John Deere until he became disabled.

Ver'dene leaves his wife, Daisy P. McQueen; daughter Marsha Johnson; two granddaughters; two sisters, Lillie Fisher (Charles) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Bobbie McQueen (Willie) of Louisville; one brother Selma McQueen (Yolanda) of Kennesaw, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ver'dene is preceded in death by four sisters and seven brothers.
