He then spent 30 months during World War II in campaigns in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany with the U.S. Anti-Aircraft Artillery.
Upon leaving the army as a Lieutenant Colonel, Gober returned to Charleston. In 1948, he accepted a position as a professional engineer with the Air War College in Montgomery. It was there that he was instrumental in documenting the design of the REDSTONE, JUPITER and PERSHING missile systems. He was a part of the launching of the first free world satellite on Jan. 30, 1958. Following his tenure there, he was assigned as the Director, Systems Design and Development Laboratory, Research and Development Directorate, where he armed the first helicopter. Later, he was appointed Deputy Project Manager for the Mauler Missile System, the research for which evolved into the modern day Patriot Missile.
As the Chief Engineer of the U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Command, St. Louis, Mo., he helped develop the mobile bridges troops used to cross bodies of water. Gober moved on to a second career in the private sector working with Taylor Machine Works and Sheller Globe in Mississippi and Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville where he did reverse engineering on Russian missiles for Egypt. In 1984, he retired with his wife, Esther, where they were very active in their church and community.
