Daryl M. Nobles

Daryl M. Nobles, 56, of McComb, died April 26, 2009, at his home. Visitation is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul M.B. Church, Summit, until services there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Milton Patterson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nobles was born July 14, 1952, in McComb. He was the son of Betty Joan Leonard Nobles of Summit and the late Marion Herman Nobles.

He was the eldest of six sons and was an emergency medical technician with Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. He was an active member of St. Paul M.B. Church, where he had been baptized, sang in the male choir and attended Bible study.

He attended grade school at Charles Taggart Elementary School and graduated from Higgins High School. He attended Alcorn A&M University, majoring in biology. He enlisted in the military in 1971, served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy and received an honorable discharge Aug. 15, 1976. He worked various jobs until July 1984, when he started at SMRMC as a floor technician. He received training in the medical center ambulance service for three years, received certification in 1987 and was a former ambulance emergency medical technician. Like his father, he loved to hunt and fish.

Mr. Nobles was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Marvis Miller.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Deborah Height “Boo” Nobles of McComb, whom he married Sept. 7, 2001, in Atlanta; his mother; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Rodney Nobles and Myrtis of Summit, Julian Nobles and Vicky of Clinton, Calvin McMorris and Pauline, and Fredrick Cotton, all of McComb; a stepdaughter, Tonya L. Robertson and husband Michael of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Courtney Height and Brittney Robertson, both of Atlanta; a goddaughter, Khole M. Nobles of Jackson; a brother-in-law, William I. Height and wife Devisha of Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Tammie R. Brown and Valerie D. Height, both of Atlanta; a special aunt, Bertha “Aunt Gooby” Ashley of Summit; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, the St. Paul Church family; and special friends, Vernon, Lionel, Johnny, David, Eric, Vince and Andre.

Pallbearers are John Harvey, Mike Boyd, Percy Pittman, Nathaniel Jones, Roosevelt Bell and Alton Branch.

J.B. ‘Red’ Dickey

J.B. “Red” Dickey, 82, of McComb, died April 25, 2009, at his home. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Cook’s Enterprise Funeral Home in McComb. Services are 1 p.m. Sunday at Spring Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Haynes, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Dickey was born Aug. 31, 1926, in Amite County, to Ananias and Maggie Gayden Dickey.

He was a retired construction worker, formerly employed with Sherman Construction and J.E. Carruth Engineering. He was a member of Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church. He attended Amite County public schools.

Mr. Dickey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Allie Mae Wells Dickey; a son, Buford Dickey; a son-in-law, EuGene Deer; and a sister, Frankie Dickey.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Dickey and wife Yolanda of Jackson; two daughters, JoAnn Deer and Dorothy Dickey, both of McComb; two uncles, Samuel and Joseph Gayden, both of New Orleans; four aunts, Bertha Bridges and Gladys White, both of New Orleans, and Mavis Taylor and Thelma Dickey, both of McComb; two sisters-in-law, Alyne White of Berlin, Wis., and Idelle Wells of New Orleans; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Patsy Cockerham

Patsy “Granny Pat” Cockerham, 71, of Centreville, died April 30, 2009, at her daughter’s residence in Hattiesburg.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 tonight at Newman Funeral Home in Centreville and 9 a.m. Saturday until services there at 11 a.m. Gerald E. Johnston Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Centreville.

Mrs. Cockerham was born July 16, 1937, in Centreville to Willie L. and Ida James Rushing.

She was a police dispatcher and a member of Centreville Baptist Church.

Mrs. Cockerham was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Sally Jo Cockerham.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Deanie Bagley and Bernie of Hattiesburg, and Ida Whetstone and Clifford of Woodville; one sister, Sammy Lou Johnston of Woodville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jason Whitaker, Dustin Whetstone, Zachary Whetstone, Charlie Landers, Lee Johnston and Chris Bagley. Honorary pallbearers are officers and employees of the Centreville Police Department.

William N. Terrell Jr.

William N. Terrell Jr., 77, of Baton Rouge and formerly of McComb, died April 30, 2009, at Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet after a brief illness.

Visitation is 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb until services there at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Jimmy Walley officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery.

Mr. Terrell was born Oct. 30, 1931, in Progress. He was the son of the late William N. Terrell Sr. and Thelma Day Terrell.

He was vice president of operations for Capital Transport in McComb from 1957 to 1986 and operations manager for Premium Tank Lines in Jackson from 1986-95.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Betty Moak Terrell of Baton Rouge; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Suzy Terrell of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Ruth Brumfield of McComb, Inez Barlow of Jackson and Edith Johnston of Laurel; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Mary Terrell of Orlando, Fla.; a grandson, Shane Terrell of Walker, La.; great-grandchildren, Savannah and Dakota Terrell of Walker; step-grandsons, Greg Sample and wife Alison of Atlanta, and David Lee Sample and wife Marti of Baton Rouge; step-great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Hayden Sample of Atlanta and Christian Sample of Baton Rouge; other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Joyce C. Taylor

Joyce Caston Taylor, 76, of the Mount Vernon community in Amite County, died April 30, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Carpenter House in Baton Rouge.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb. Visitation continues at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church until services there at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Clint Penabler and the Rev. Todd Sumrall officiating. Burial will be in Terry’s Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Taylor was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Amite County. She was the daughter of Glen and Lottie Frazier Caston.

She was retired from Louisiana State University, having worked in the poultry department. She was a longtime member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Amite County, where she was active until her health began to fail and where she served many years as church treasurer and in other various positions. She was a member of the MVPs, Liberty VIPs and Terry’s Creek Golden Ages.

Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Augustus Taylor; and an infant brother, Alton Hugh Caston.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Terry Campagna of Baton Rouge; two sons and daughters-in-law, David Alton and Deborah Taylor of Zachary, La., and Danny and LaMarylis “Lemy” Taylor of Baton Rouge; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Annie Belle and Phillip Harrell of Liverpool, La., and Mary Dee and J.B. “Bert” Rice of Clinton, La.; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Doktorchik and husband Andy of Fort Worth, Texas, Amanda Phillips and husband Brandon of Prairieville, La., Monica Campagna, Brad Taylor, Adam Taylor and Mark Taylor, all of Baton Rouge, Sandra Kirby and husband Joseph of Port Allen and Stephen Taylor of Zachary; and six great-grandchildren, Kylie Phillips, Kaylin Phillips and Kinsey Phillips, all of Prairieville, Alyssa Joyce Doktorchik of Fort Worth, and Ian Kirby and Amanda Kirby of Port Allen.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Taylor, Brad Taylor, Adam Taylor, Mark Taylor, Andy Doktorchik, Brandon Phillips and Joseph Kirby. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and nephews-in-law and deacons of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Memorials may be sent to Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 4923 Mount Vernon Road, Liberty, MS 39645.

David Jonathan Jr.

David “Dave” Jonathan Jr., 59, of Liberty, died April 27, 2009, at Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville.

Visitation is 6 to 8 tonight at Peoples Undertaking Co. in McComb. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Liberty, with the Rev. George Coney, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Jonathan was born Aug. 19, 1949, in Liberty. He was the fifth of 12 children and first son born to David Jonathan and Scottie Jean McKnight Brown.

He was baptized at Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in 1968 under the pastorate of the late Rev. W.H. Tobias.

Dave’s formal education was at Central High School in Liberty. After high school, Dave moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he united with Progressive Baptist Church of Tomorrow under the pastorate of the Rev. Edward McKnight, where he served as an usher. His profession was a welder at Abel Welding in Cleveland, until he was faced with health challenges.

On Sept. 23, 2000, Dave married Linda Joyce Hawkins, who died Aug. 8, 2004. Although Dave was the “no nonsense” sibling, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an excellent cook and a protector of his nieces.

During his medical crisis, his brother Raymond devoted many unselfish hours to care for him while in Cleveland and moved him home before his passing. Dave will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Mr. Jonathan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Louis “Coon” Brown and Raymond “Ray” Lamar Brown; father-in-law, Albert Hawkins; one brother-in-law, Dwight Hawkins; and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ophelia Ashley Brown, Mary Louise Brown, Betty Jean Beasley and Herman, and Lucille Marie Winding and Cleophas, all of Liberty; five brothers, Carl Chester of San Francisco, Larry Bertrand and Walter Bernard, both of Liberty, Lester Earl of Katy, Texas, and Patrick of Jackson; three aunts, Mildred Hampton of Liberty, Lillie Powell of McComb and Arie McKnight of Cleveland; one uncle, Lamar McKnight and his wife Altimease of Cleveland; mother-in-law, Jenee Hawkins of Cleveland; two sisters-in-law, Sandra Norvell and her husband Alfred, and Yvonne Mitchell, all of Cleveland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Earl ‘Butch’ Jackson

Earl Van “Butch” Jackson, 54, a lifelong resident of Crosby, died April 29, 2009, at his residence near Crosby.

Services were 11 a.m. today at Brown Funeral Home in Gloster. The Rev. Warren Whitaker officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery near Crosby.

Mr. Jackson was born May 4, 1954, in Gloster to Otis Fred Jackson and Annie Fayetta McCurley Jackson.

He was a retired chipping saw operator with Georgia-Pacific in Roxie for 17 years.

Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren and two brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Lacy West and her husband Stephen of Bogue Chitto and April Sullivan of Brookhaven; three grandchildren, Dalton West, Nicholas West and Novalee Sullivan; four sisters, Virgie Leblue of Crowley, La., Grace Robertson of Crosby, Fayetta Jones of Cleveland, Tenn., and Julliann Smith of Columbia.

Pallbearers were Lev Cavin Jr., Britt Cavin, Chris Cavin, Bo Robertson, B.J. Robertson and Homer Nettles. Honorary pallbearers were Brad Cavin, Gavin Robertson, Pat Robertson, Patrick Robertson, Jason Robertson, Keith Smith, John Dale LeBlue, Otis Jackson and friends from Paul’s Community Grocery.

Soule Erwin Cotten

Soule Erwin Cotten, 87, of Orange, Texas, and formerly of McComb, died April 29, 2009, at Orange Baptist Hospital.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 tonight at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Hollywood Cemetery in McComb. The Rev. Jimmy T. Smith Jr. will officiate. Catchings Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr.Cotten was born April 13, 1922, in McComb. He was the son of the late Amile and Leila Cotten.

He was employed for 29 years with DuPont and worked in areas of Wilmington, Dela., and Orange. He served in the European Theater during World War II and was recalled during the Korean War.

He was a Mason and 50-year member of McComb City Lodge 382 F&AM. He also was an amateur radio operator. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Cotten; his children, Charles Cotten and his wife Sharon, John Cotten, and Michael Cotten and his wife Jeane; and grandchildren, Jason, Katelynn and Samantha Cotten.

Pallbearers will be family members.
